Development News Pizza, Parking & Pop Fundraiser

Matching Gift Sponsor, Jay and Beulah Raymond Gift Fund

A tradition since our very first Fernside meeting, many kids tell us that a favorite part of Fernside is the pizza dinner served

before support group meetings. “Pizza Time” is an opportunity for Fernside families to socialize and enjoy hospitality with each other before focusing on their grief. As our program has grown so has our pizza order! LaRosa’s generously donates over 350 pizzas annually but our costs for pizza and soft drinks exceed $16,000 each year! Additionally, our downtown satellite lost last year’s in-kind parking donor

and because the cost is a barrier for some families, we reimburse the expense. We anticipate exceeding $2,000 in parking costs this year as our downtown location grows. Thanks to the Jay and Beulah Raymond Gift Fund for matching donations up to $2,500 so we can continue to offer a Fernside favorite to grieving families.

Ready or Not: Making Time for a CrisisWhat Your School Can Do Before, During, and After a Death

Fernside’s Crisis Response Program supports schools after they have experienced the death of one of their own – a student, teacher or other school community member. We provide consultation, resources and on-site support and education

for faculty, parents and students. One of the most impactful ways we can help schools is by educating them prior to a crisis. On January 31st, over 60 professionals attended Fernside’s seminar to learn ways to proactively prepare for the possibility of a crisis at their school. Our continuing education offering featured staff who presented on school crisis situations and a panel of school professionals from Southwest Local School District, St. Margaret of York School, Ursuline Academy and Warren County Educational Service Center, who discussed their experience with death and grief in their school.

Volunteer News

Last year, 280 volunteers donated 6,630 hours of time valued at $156,202.80

but we know their gift is truly priceless! How do you create the best possible team of volunteers? It’s as easy as A-B-C. Help us celebrate the individuals listed below!

April 15-21, 2018 is National Volunteer Week.

As grandparents take on a larger role with their grandchildren, often becoming guardians or acting as primary caretakers,

we are seeing an increase in the number of children coming to Fernside following

the death of a grandparent from 19% five years ago to 25% last year.

We are also serving more children whose family member died from a drug overdose, increasing from 3% served five years ago to 13% served last year.

Program TrendsIt was another busy year at Fernside. Here are some of the trends we saw in our program.

Program News

NFL Player & Fernside Alum Wears His Heart on His Feet!

Greg Mancz, offensive lineman for the Houston Texans, came to Fernside when he was 11 years old with his younger sister, Emma, and mom, Mary

Beth, after the death of his father, Brian in 2003. Greg also attended our Teen Retreat the following year. On Sunday, December 2, Greg took the field wearing his custom-designed Nike cleats as part of the 2017 My Cleats, My Cause NFL initiative. We are so proud of all of our Fernside kids, including Greg, who take advantage of all our program has to offer and we are especially grateful that so many of them give back to Fernside so the next generation of grieving kids can benefit from our services. Greg has generously decided to donate his cleats to Fernside which will be auctioned off at our annual fundraiser, the Fernside Classic, in May!

“Losing my father at the age of 11 was the worst event of my life. For #mycausemycleats, I want to thank Fernside, a Center for grieving children, for being the organization to get me to feel like a kid who could do life again. They taught me that everyone will grieve differently, but that a support group for children and their families can help you get through the traumatic experience and make you not feel so alone.”

Margaret of York School, Ursuline Academy and Warren County Educational Service Center, who discussed their experience with death and grief in their school.

for faculty, parents and students.

We experienced our largest number of students served on-site at their

school through our School, Crisis and Special Collaboration Programs. Last

year 45% of the youth we served participated in a group held at their

school versus 36% five years ago.
