Welcome to the Spring issue of ‘Eventidings’

It’s been an exciting time here at Eventide since our last edition and yay, winter is over. Bring on

the spring weather, it is a wonderful time of year.

This edition of your Eventidings Newsletter will bring you all up to speed on the celebrations held

over the past season and share snapshots from Christmas in July and Pub Luncheons to bus trips

for our retirement village residents. I wish to thank the new volunteers who have come on board

to make these outings possible, your support is making a tangible impact for our residents every

day.

Another big event in recent weeks was the celebration of “Aged Care Employee Day”. It was

wonderful to have the opportunity to thank, honour, recognise and celebrate the over one

hundred staff who work here at Eventide Homes who make a positive difference in the lives of our

residents – 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year in year out.

We also update you on our upcoming projects, the Hostel upgrade and Stage 2 of The

Plantation. We are very lucky that our Board of Directors are proactive and try and keep on the

front foot.

After a cold and miserable winter, Eventide

will come to life in spring with some great

upcoming events and activities.

I hope you enjoy this edition of Eventidings.

around the traps’ Residents have been avoiding the cold weather and

enjoying all of the indoor activities on offer. Pub

Luncheons continue to to be a much anticipated

monthly event, with residents reserving tables well in

advance. We celebrated Christmas in July with a won-

had a ball and talked about it for the following weeks.

Recent rain & sunshine sure has Cliff Mayberry smiling.

The vegetable garden he attends to daily is flourishing

and providing the kitchen with yummy homegrown

produce. Thank You Cliff!

Big plans ahead at Eventide Homes.

Eventide plan to spend approximately $3.6 mil-

lion on upgrading our hostel, once the board

approves the final Masterplan.

The upgrade is important to meet the needs of current

and future residents. Most aged care facilities are

updated every 12 to 15 years.”

Eventide have a 100-bed licence for the hostel, and we

would like to increase it to 120. We currently have a

large number of people on the waiting list and

we want to be able to provide local people with the

accommodation needs that they require, whilst living

in their hometown area.

We held the first of our Masterplan Workshops in

August . The aim of this first workshop was designed

to give all stakeholders a chance to listen, learn, talk

and explore views about the redevelopment of

Eventide Homes. Architect Mr Darragh O’Brien

conducted the Workshop, offered ideas and was

eager to learn what current residents and the public

are wanting for the future of Eventide Homes. We

were delighted to see so many people from within the

community attend the workshop.

Eventide Homes will also spend $400,000 on

infrastructure development at The Plantation in

preparation for commencement of Stage 2 at

the popular Plantation Drive residential

retirement area.

Architect Darragh O’Brien aims to have the

plans completed by the end of September

and building will commence once the board

has approved the completed Master Plan.

We have prioritised our wish list and

whatever we can afford to do we will.

Each newsletter edition we will be

introducing you to one of the many

brilliant staff members we have working at

Eventide Homes. There are a broad range

of roles across the organisation and every

staff member does an amazing job.

This edition we meet Sheryl Friend.

Sheryl has been working with us here at

Eventide Homes for over 14 years.

Growing up in Stawell, Sheryl completed

her schooling at Stawell 502 Primary School

and the Stawell High School before com-

mencing work at Roses Gap Recreational

Centre.

“Making the residents

lifestyle easier”

Sheryl finds the most rewarding aspect of

working at Eventide Homes is being able to

make the residents lifestyle happier.

When Sheryl is not working she loves

spending quality time with her grand

children, looking after animals and a night

at Bingo every now and then.

Eventide Homes celebrated Christmas in July with a wonderful Christmas Luncheon. Residents

enjoyed the feast with Christmas carols playing in the background.

All were keen to crack their bon-bon and pop on the crown

and enjoy the festivities with melodic sounds from volunteer

musicians Carmel Phelan, Robert Fry and Geoff Harmer,

whom entertained all in attendance.

Staff and volunteers worked brilliantly, whilst secretly

organising and preparing the surprise luncheon.

Administration Assistant Rebecca Farrell exclaimed “Seeing the

joy in the residents eyes was the most rewarding feeling ever.. “

Appreciating the mood of the day, both residents and staff

kicked up their heels and enjoyed a dance or two!

Resident Cliff Mayberry addressed the crowd to thank

everybody who contributed to making the event possible.

“It’s been simply marvellous” he exclaimed. It was great to see

so many residents and family attend this bit of fun in the middle

of winter. A big thank you to all the staff and volunteers for their

fantastic efforts”.

‘Meet Cheeky’

Residents recently hosted a naming competition for

Eventide Homes new feathered friend. After a lot of

debating and chatting about a new name, residents

decided Cheeky would be an appropriate name for

the playful cockatoo.

Many staff & residents call in daily and visit Cheeky,

who is delighted with the company and happy to

entertain with chatter and dancing!

Stawell Secondary College students recently visited Eventide Homes to interview residents about their

lives, historical events and major changes throughout their lifetimes. Residents enjoyed chatting and

sharing stories with the students

As a part of the Year 12 VCAL studies at Stawell Secondary College, students were asked to interview resi-

dents at Eventide Homes about their lives. The purpose of this was to demonstrate an awareness of social

diversity and apply strategies to improve their communication skills. In order to do this, students devised

a number of questions and conversation starters to learn more about the residents and the historical

events they lived through.

Students then used their answers to write a short biography about the resident they interviewed.

“For some students this proved challenging, as they were put outside their comfort zone, and for others,

an exciting opportunity to connect with an older generation” said Stawell Secondary College teacher Zoe

Jones. “I would like to thank the residents of Eventides Homes for their time and their openness in sharing

their history with our students”.

‘Retirement Village News’

Over the past few months Retirement Village residents have

enjoyed venturing out and about on planned Bus Trips.

The Eventide mini bus has travelled to Rupanyup to view

the Silo Art, Halls Gap for an ice cream and a visit to the

Horsham Plaza. These excursions have proven to be very

popular with residents. The next bus trip is on Friday 21st

September and will be travelling to Wendouree Village.

Remember - First in - Best Dressed. Names to placed on the

notice board in the Kingston Community Centre.

A new Walking group will commence this month, the first

will be a walk to Plantation Drive to view Gordon’s vast

array of painted gnomes.

‘Walking with Rocky’ will be a nice, leisurely walk around

the block with Cavalier King Charles Spaniel “Rocky”.

Keep up to date with current activities & events by regularly

checking the noticeboard in the Kingston Community

Centre. Please write down any ideas or requests for bus

trips or activities on the whiteboard provided in the

Community Centre. We would love to hear your ideas.

Have you some time to spare? Would you like to learn new skills?

Make new friends? Gain rewarding experiences?

Consider Volunteering at Eventide Homes.

Volunteering can be a regular commitment or a flexible

arrangement when you have an hour or so to spare. You

may be interested in assisting with activities such as

reading, craft, bus outings, shopping, or going for a walk

with residents. We need volunteers to assist with outdoor

activities such as propagating plants, tinkering with tools or

just having a yarn with Hostel residents.

If you would like to find out more about becoming a

volunteer at Eventide Homes, please contact our

Volunteer Co-ordinator Rebecca Farrell on (03) 53582027.

New outdoor park benches have been installed at

Plantation Drive for residents use. It was great to

see the seating being put to use recently with

residents utilising one of the new park bench seats

to enjoy coffee with neighbours in the sunshine.

‘Walking Group’

A new walking group for Retirement Village

residents is commencing soon. Our first walk will be

to Plantation Drive (approx. 15 minute stroll) to view

a large collection of hand painted garden gnomes.

Gordon, a local resident has a newfound hobby for

painting these adorable garden ornaments, and is

happy for walkers to inspect the colourful collection.

Please see Retirement Village Diary Dates for
