From The Home Front

Thank you for attending The Old House New House Home Show. Since 1984, this event has been bringing together top-notch exhibitors with a terrific audience of homeowners in a positive, inspiring and engaging environment. Reese and Joanne Kennedy began hosting home improve-ment events in the 1970’s as an extension of their interest in renovating. They purchased an English Tudor and bravely ventured into projects, seeing past the surface of the old, outdated house and en-visioning the potential beauty waiting to be realized.

This show celebrates that potential and possibility that lies in each of our homes. With hundreds of exhibitors featuring the latest trends, styles, sur-faces, products and services, this show continues to build off of that possibility we are all striving for in our homes, celebrating the spirit of home renovation and transformation.

Our homes are where families gather, friends stop by to catch up and have a cup of coffee, snowy boots collect in the hallway, college students come home to recharge, where we kick off our shoes after work and relax while watching our favorite shows. There is nothing like coming home. Thank you for visiting The Old House New House Home Show to spark ideas to make the place you live a place you love.

We are grateful for the collective expertise brought together here by the participating professionals whose unique skills, talents, trades and specialties add so much interest to this event.

A big thanks goes out to Clint Harp of Harp Design Co. We feel fortunate to welcome you, learn more about your adventures as an artisan and be part of the “Handcrafted” book tour.

Thanks to Lou Manfredini, HouseSmarts Radio and the talented team at WGN Radio. Our gratitude goes out to Perma-Seal Basement Systems and Lindemann Chimney and Fireplace for sponsoring the live broadcast. Our partner philanthropy, Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley and their ReStores in Chicago and Elgin, has added so much meaning to our work. Thank you Deanna Davies and team! We recognize the great work you are doing build-ing stability through affordable homeownership.

Thanks to media partners, Mark and Sharon Spero and the staff at Money Mailer. Your strong support and your outstanding exhibitor hospitality this year are graciously appreciated. We always enjoy working together with you.

Pheasant Run, OES Volunteers and Kennedy crew, your tireless efforts, creative ideas, friendly smiles and can-do attitudes are appreciated beyond words.

To our homeowner attendees, thank you for visiting this event and sharing your ideas, house goals and projects in mind. We wish you happy home improving as you update, renovate and elevate your home surroundings.

Kennedy Productions is especially thankful to this year’s Presenting Sponsor, Floor and Decor. We appreciate your support and involvement in the show.

Featured Recipe

making meatballs with event founder, Joanne Kennedy & Beth Kennedy wall

Ingredients: • 2 lbs. ground meat (your choice: lean ground beef, turkey, pork and/or veal)

• 1 small onion, minced

• 1/2 cup bread crumbs

• 1/4 cup fresh grated parmesan or Romano cheese

• 1 egg

• 1/8 – 1/4 cup of fresh chopped parsley

• 1 tsp dried oregano

• 1/2 Tbs of garlic powder

• Salt & pepper to taste

Directions: Preheat oven to 375. Place all ingredients in a large mixing bowl and mix by hand until everything is well combined. Soaking the bread crumbs in ¼ cup of milk before adding them to the mixture can supposedly make the meatballs moister but honestly we can’t tell the difference. Once everything is well mixed you can start rolling them up. Try to make them all the same size so that they cook evenly. You can use a medium cookie scoop to help ensure they are uniform. Place meatballs on a cookie sheet with a ridge and cook for 20-30 minutes or until they are no longer pink inside. Add them to your favorite sauce and enjoy!

Celebrity Spotlight

Well-known for his involvement in HGTV’s “Fixer Upper” with Chip and Joanna Gaines, Clint Harp has had a winding path to stardom. With a love of woodworking in his heart, instilled from grandfather Verner, along with tools of the trades he picked up along the way, Clint Harp is constructing an admirable adventure. With a new TV show, “Wood Work” on DIY Network, his book “Handcrafted” and his much loved Harp Design Co., Clint is busy creating… just what he loves to do. Kennedy Productions is thrilled to welcome Clint Harp to The Old House New House Home Show as part of the “Handcrafted” book tour. Clint took a minute out of his hectic schedule to share a behind-the-scenes look at some of the experiences that have shaped the life he’s crafting.

Is there a mentor that stands out in your life? What lessons did you learn from him? My mentor, Paul, in Houston is most definitely one of the most influential people in my life. I met him at a time when I felt 100% sure that I was totally miserable doing what I was doing every day. After meeting with him for 2 years, I quit my job and went for my dream.

But that wasn’t Paul’s goal. He didn’t care if I quit my job or not. What he cared about was seeing me be the most honest version of of myself that there is. There was a lot of work that went into that process and I am absolutely better for it.

You are well known for building beautiful, hand-crafted tables. Why tables? What does that symbolize to you? I have loved beautiful tables for quite a while. I’ve just loved tables in general really. I love that tables are there to bring us together. When you agree to sit down at a table with other people, you agree to a shared experience. It’s these shared experiences that bring us closer. In my book, “Handcrafted,” I wrote about how a table is built to stand up under the weight of family conflict and problems that need to be solved, and how a table will be there to support the work of a young student, or the creativity and love of a family sitting down together to make cookies. That’s why I make tables and my hope is that our tables will be the piece in a home that brings people closer.

What is your connection to Habitat for Humanity? Years ago, my grandmother worked for President Jimmy Carter. Because of that connection I’ve always looked fondly upon the Carters and have felt proud of the work they do. As I’ve grown up, I’ve learned how important their work is and I value it so much regardless of any personal connection. When Kelly and I had decided to move to Waco after I quit my job, I needed to do something until I found a shop. As if being told by my grandmother from the other side of the grave, I felt like I was supposed to go and volunteer with Habitat. So, I did! After volunteering with Habitat for four months, they ended up renting their abandoned 1600 square foot shop to me for $25/month. That shop was the launching place for our business here in Waco and I’ll be forever connected to Habitat for it! Clint will be speaking at The Old House New House Home Show on Saturday, February 9th at 3 pm and Sunday, February 10th at noon. Following his presentations, Clint will meet and greet fans. MAGNIFICATION

The magnifying lens remains one of the most common tools to help compensate for low vision. When your work demands close-up precision and masterful attention to every detail, the daylight magnifying range delivers high contrast, accurate color matching, low heat and the flexibility and ergonomic design that you demand, all while offering a modern and stylish look.

Daylight lamps create Less strain on the eyes! Did you know that as our eyes get older the pupils get smaller, and we naturally need more light to see clearly?

Everyone needs good levels of light and as we get older we need more. By the time you are age 60 you are likely to require three times more light than when you were 20! Our lamps are designed alongside the Royal National Institute of Blind People for those of us with ageing eyes or sight loss. Daylight lamps provide a color balanced, high output light source with a greater level of contrast. This creates an improved environment for reading, studying or detailed work. Daylight lamps are easy to adjust to exactly where the light is required and some incorporate magnifying lenses for those who require enlarged viewing. Daylight light creates less strain on the eyes and allows you to read and work for much longer periods and in optimal comfort.

Exhibitor Spotlight

What is the best time for pruning trees? The old saying is the best time to prune trees is when the saw is sharp. There are some limita-tions; oak and elm trees should only be pruned in winter due to disease problems transmitted by insects. Winter is a great time to see branch struc-ture that is hard to see with leaves on and a good time to work around sensitive areas like peren-nial gardens and ponds. Frozen ground makes it easier to protect lawns and gardens.

What is your favorite flowering tree for this zone? My favorite flowering woody plant is actually a large shrub, Witchhazel. Common Witchhazel is native and flowers late in the year, like October/November. Vernal Witchhazel flowers in February/March and has small, delicate yellow flowers. They frame the flowering woody plant season, being the first and last things to bloom. These can grow quite large, so they need plenty of space. I have cared for Witchhazels that are 15’ tall and 15’ across.

Which species offers the best fall color? Most people like the hybrid maples, such as Autumn Blaze, Autumn Fantasy and Armstrong. These have a leaf like a silver maple, upright branching structure and smooth gray bark. Many are being planted right now so please be careful. As a culture, we have not learned from losing American elms and ash trees, and now we are over planting with maples which could set us up for another problem in the future.

Which early blooming trees are your favorites to lead us out of winter and into spring? Redbuds and Cornelian cherry dogwoods both bloom early before their leaves come, so the flowers stand out even though they are small. Redbuds have pinky-purple flowers and are native to this area and grow well. Cornelian cherry dogwoods are a thickly branched small tree with peeling bark that looks great in winter. Yellow flowers in early spring and red fruits in the fall help round out year-long interest.

What are mulch volcanoes? When mulch gets piled up too high against the tree trunk, this can reduce tree vigor and health. This is usually the result of over- mulching, mulching too fre-quently or turning bed edgings up into the bed and then burying them in mulch. Trees should have roots that visibly flare out away from the trunk.

What signs should homeowners look for when inspecting trees on their property? Easy things to look for right now are branches losing bark, limbs that rub on each other and any kind of holes/swelling in branches, the trunk or base. In summer, examine leaves to be sure they are full size, correct color, show no sign of chew-ing damage from insects and that they are not falling off the tree when they should not be.

Why do some maple trees have black spots on their leaves? Black spots on the leaves of Norway and silver maples have shown up the last few years starting in midsummer. This is a disease called tar spot; it does not

cause leaves to fall from the tree and does not require treatment for the health of the tree. Other diseases, like apple scab and anthracnose, do cause leaves to fall, which inhibits the tree’s ability for photosynthesis, to make food for itself. These diseases should be treated.

Is the Emerald Ash Borer still a concern in our area? If you are a tree and plant person you are probably tired of hearing about Emerald Ash Borer (EAB.) In the Chicago area, it can be hard to find ash trees that are not already infested if they are not on a quality treatment program. I still find a couple each year, normally white ash, but it’s unusual. If you have trees in your yard and you’re not sure what species they are, it could be a good idea to have an arborist check them out. Occasionally, I find a black or blue ash that is still in good shape and worthy of treatment due to its rare nature in this area. Infested ash trees should be removed. EAB damage causes trees to quickly decay and become a hazard to people and property.

During winter, should we shake snowy and icy branches? If we have heavy snow, it can be useful to plants like arborvitaes and other evergreens to brush the snow off to prevent bent and broken branches. Watch out for getting snow down your collar! If we have ice like we had last Thanksgiving, then it’s best to leave it alone and allow it to melt. Trying to knock the ice off can cause branch breakage or tear off buds/leaves.

Regarding power lines, is there a standard guideline for clearance? Lines that run from pole to pole are cleared to 10’. If any part of a tree is touching a pole to pole electric line, contact the power provider right away. If the line runs from the pole to your house, this is the responsibility of the homeowner and should be handled by a trained arborist. This may require the electric provider to disconnect the power line before the work can be done if the line is touching the tree. We all dislike those trees that have been cut into weird shapes to clear the lines, so remember to avoid planting tall trees near or under power lines.

What are the most common mistakes made by homeowners regarding tree care? The most common mistake is simply not having the trees cared for. Many homes I visit have safety issues/tree health concerns that the

homeowner is not aware of because they have never had a certified arborist out to check their property. Even if you have not had problems before, it’s wise to have your trees checked every five years or so. A certified arborist will let you know if any of your trees are danger-ous or have poor structure. Disease or insect problems can also be identified for proactive, trouble-shooting. Schedule an appointment with a certified arborist, and then walk the yard together. You will learn a lot!

What is Tree Hab? Tree Hab is a program just starting in the Fox River Valley. It’s a new initiative to help people with physical and developmental difficulties interact with trees through assisted climbing programs. It’s been shown that connecting with nature can have a calming, joyful and empowering effect… and seeing things from a new perspective can be beneficial in many ways.

In your opinion, what are the best benefits of trees? There are many benefits, such as blocking unwanted views, providing privacy and reducing light, particulate and sound pollution. Trees help to feed the eco-system. Oak trees are particularly beneficial in feeding insects and mammals, in turn nourish-ing birds, other animals and even reptiles. Tree roots help stabilize soil to reduce erosion and help keep our streams and rivers cleaner. You can use a tool like the tree benefit calculator to look at the monetary contributions that trees provide by shading homes to minimize summer cooling bills, intercepting rain water from storm sewers and managing/sequestering carbon by taking it from the air and turning it into wood: http://www.treebenefits.com/calculator/

Do not underestimate what you enjoy every day from trees; the shade while sitting under a big leafy specimen on a hot summer day, the beauty of flowering trees in the spring and the rainbow of colors in the fall are all wonderful reasons to plant and maintain trees.
