From the OLLI Governing Council Chair Michael J. GunnLift Off …six, five, four, we have ignition, three, two, one…

Do you remember those incredibly exciting early days of space exploration? Our space and knowledge journey isn’t over. What else will be discovered in our lifetime? Where else will we go? The future is unknown, but we know human nature is always reaching, always searching, always eager to learn more today.

Your OLLI is a lot like that as well. You have people searching, reaching, striving to do more today than we did yesterday. Of course, our facilitators come to mind, but the OLLI committees work tirelessly behind the course scenes. The committees are the folks constantly working to make your OLLI experience meaningful and, in every way possible – excellent.

Your committee chairpersons are:• Michael Gunn and Linda Neville – finance committee• Becky Gunn – curriculum committee• Jeanne Velling – social committee• Kelly Boryca – publicity committee• Linda Neville – policies and procedures committee• John Carter – technology committee• Barbara Leonard – volunteer committee• Joe Schaffer – planning• Barbara Brown – special programs (SIGs, interludes, and field trips)

OLLI could not function without these selfless people and their committee members. One thing is for sure – after our long months in pandemic lock-down, this team is ready to go and deliver the OLLI you want. If you are interested in learning more about any of these committees and how you may help – contact Tricia at the OLLI office.

…three, two, one…and we have lift off!

Sedona/Verde Valley OLLI Class Exchange! The Prescott and Sedona/Verde Valley OLLI have collaborated to offer each respective group access to the other’s online classes. 1) HOW TO PUT THE WOW IN YOURPHOTOGRAPHSWednesday, 9/8-10/13, 2-4pmLocation: 31-102 Limit: 15Facilitator: Larry PadgettWe all cherish family photographs, yet the ones we hang on our walls reflect experiences and memories, of stellar landscapes, wild animals, beautiful plants, and spectacular architecture, because they tell the stories we want to share with our friends. So, naturally, we want them to brilliantly convey the moment that thrilled us when we snapped the shutter. Participants will learn the elements of putting the WOW in their photos and make them sing, with a focus on how to creatively critique their future work. Using a wide variety of images, including those from homework assignments, this course will demonstrate how to easily turn good photo opportunities into captivating images. An important prerequisite: This is not a basic course, so participants must be comfortable with using the interrelationship between aperture, shutter speed, and ISO to obtain proper exposure, and be able to share photographs electronically, such as on a thumb drive.

2) HOW COLORS AFFECT YOUTuesday, 9/7-10/12, 2-4pmLocation: 19-225 Limit: 30Facilitator: Barbara Mace*Scientific research done on colors? Yes, and during the first 30 minutes of our class Prof. William Lidwell will highlight different colors each week and explain what scientists have discovered about them. For the rest of the time, I will be sharing psychological, cultural and other world-wide interpretations with stories, activities, and even superstitions that further illuminate the world of color. Week 1: Meaning of Color; Week 2: Black and White; Week 3: Red; Week 4: Yellow; Week 5: Green; & Week 6: Blue.

3) BEGINNING GUITAR PT 2Monday, 9/13-10/18, 2-4pmLocation: 31-101 Limit: 8Facilitators: Mark C. Dillon, Jim TrappThis is a continuation of “Beginner and Almost Guitar.” If you’ve played “just a little” or if it’s been a while since you’ve played, this class will provide a refresher and re-charge. Focus is on fun, learning more chords and strums, and playing songs. All who have taken the “absolute beginner” course are encouraged to sign on for something just a little more advanced.

4) INTRODUCTION TO ART JOURNALINGFriday, 10/1-10/15, 2-4pmLocation: 31-101 Limit: 12Facilitator: Linda K. NevilleArt Journals are a great way to get creative without worrying about perfection! We’ll start with a blank notebook and a few art supplies. Together we’ll fill our pages with inspiration, doodles, text, or whatever else happens spontaneously. Your facilitator will have each next step ready for you to take in your own style. This class is an opportunity to defy your inner critic and see what happens when you focus on the joy of creating something interesting. Please bring $5 to cover cost of supplies, and bring a blank notebook. A 7 x 10 spiral bound, mixed media paper pad is recommended, but anything will work as long as the pages aren’t too thin and flimsy.

5) WOOL APPLIQUE - HALLOWEENWednesday, 9/22-9/29, 2-4:30pmLocation: 31-101 Limit: 14Facilitator: Jill NorcrossStudents will purchase a Halloween themed wool appliqué kit and learn the basic step by step method of how to put it together to complete a holiday project. 7) MEMOIR WRITING WITH JOANN ASHLOCKWednesday, 9/8-10/6, 2-4pmLocation: 19-225 Limit: 12Facilitator: Joann AshlockLet’s write. We will explore ideas and writing tips that can help to improve your memoir writing including the use of senses, concrete detail and the development of scene and dialogue. Your memoirs may be for family or for yourself in understanding your own history. We will share our writing with class members, and members will be invited to give their positive, friendly and constructive feedback. Priority enrollment will be given to returning students; new students are welcome.

8) JANE AUSTEN & HER HEROINESFriday, 9/10-10/15, 2-4:30pmLocation: 4-102 Limit: 45Facilitator: Barbara Mace*The first four weeks we will be viewing three main Jane Austin characters who are decidedly different and uncharacteristic for “normal heroines.” Our own Devoney Looser (ASU professor) will guide us through the times and normalcies of the Austen era including the mores, values, and traditions. Emma, Northanger Abbey, and Persuasion are the films we’ll view to observe the following heroines: (1) Emma – handsome, clever, and rich; (2) Fannie – plain, thin, and awkward; and (3) Anne – aged, socially precarious, and ignored. The last two weeks we will be viewing everyone’s favorite sisters Elinor and Marianne in Sense and Sensibility and Jane and Elizabeth in Pride and Prejudice.

9) WRITE LIKE RAYMOND CHANDLEROR DASHIELL HAMMETT OR ERNESTHEMINGWAY...Tuesday, 9/7-10/12, 9:30-10:45amLocation: 30-126/Zoom Limit: 10Facilitator: Jim Veney*Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, and Ernest Hemingway had similar spare, pared-down styles of writing. Though Chandler and Hammett wrote hard-boiled pulp fiction and Hemingway won a Nobel for literature, their styles, apart from Chandler’s rich use of simile, seem close enough to serve as models for a writing class. So, this class will look at examples of each man’s writing styles and will provide participants the opportunity to write like one, or all, of them and read the work to other members of the class.

10) FOREIGN FILMSFriday, 9/10-10/15, 2-4pmLocation: 4-118 Limit: 40Facilitator: Bill HaasAs we return to the classroom, the Foreign Films learning group will show mostly award winning and fairly recent films. All films are generally thought provoking and serious, balanced with more lighthearted selections. The class objective is to discuss what we saw, find out about different views and insights into the subject matter, and other aspects of the films. So, come and enjoy good acting, cinematography, and life situations, and also share your questions and interpretations with the group.

11) MOVIES OF WARREN OATESMonday, 9/13-10/18, 2-4pmLocation: 3-203 Limit: 30Facilitator: Jim Veney*Warren Oates (1928–1982) played mostly supporting roles in more than fifty films. But he was best known for several films directed by Sam Peckinpah, including The Wild Bunch (1969) and Bring me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974). He played officer Sam Wood in In the Heat of the Night (1967). He starred in films during the 1970s that have since achieved cult status, such as Two Lane Black Top (1971), and the biopic Dillinger (1973). One of his last roles was as U.S. Army Sergeant Hulka in the military comedy Stripes (1981). This class will watch six films in which Oates appeared: In the Heat of the Night,The Wild Bunch, Two Lane Blacktop, Dillinger, Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia, and Stripes. We will also reserve some time to talk about the movies and the craft of Warren Oates.

12) A LIVING ROOM CONVERSATIONTuesday; Wednesday, 10/19&10/20, 2-4:30pmLocation: 31-101 Limit: 8Facilitator: Nancy Van der VoortThese “Living Room Conversations” attract people who are interested in moving through our seemingly intractable differences in the hope of depolarizing ourselves and our interactions with others, be they family, friends, acquaintances, or strangers. During the first session, we’ll focus on our ability to listen attentively, respectfully, and courageously to people with whom we may differ. In the second session, we’ll have a conversation about a typical common area of interest yet where we may have found challenges to a civil conversation. The facilitator will provide links to articles supporting the topic of each day once the roster for the class has been determined.

13) VIEWPOINTS WITH Y. “TURK” KANGALFriday, 9/10-10/15, 9:30-11:30amLocation: 31-101 Limit: 15Facilitators: Turk Kangal*, Jack WilsonAristotle says “it is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.” No idea, belief, or opinion is out of bounds in this class. However, not to allow one to express his or her thoughts is. Let us have a lively, entertaining and most of all, informative discussion.

14) FOREIGN AFFAIRSTuesday, 9/7-10/12, 12:30-2:15pmLocation: 19-224 Limit: 30Facilitator: John LoweThis learning group uses brief presentations to generate discussions about foreign affairs, and reviews current headlines and some lesser-reported events as well as updates on previous headlines. In addition, we discuss major global issues and international topics of interest. Interactive discussions led by the facilitator and volunteer guest speakers. Bring your own viewpoint and share your opinions. Join the conversation.

15) MEANING OF LIFE: PERSPECTIVESFROM THE WORLD’S GREAT INTELLECTUALTRADITIONSFriday, 9/10-10/15, 8:30-10:30amLocation: 3-271 Limit: 30Facilitator: Rand LaneGuided by a passionate and thorough professor, Jay L. Garfield Ph.D., this intellectually gripping Great Course offers a rigorous and wide-ranging exploration of various spiritual, religious, and philosophical traditions from both the East and the West that have contributed to this profound line of questioning.

16) A FIELD GUIDE TO THE PLANETSWednesday, 9/8-10/13, 2-4pmLocation: 4-102 Limit: 40Facilitators: Dave Hoffman*, Johanna Kangal*In this course you’ll discover the wonders of our solar system while learning about the planetary science (physical, chemical, and geologic) behind these wonders. Why do the planets have the surface features and the atmospheres they do? How did the solar system begin and evolve? We’ll also travel to the various moons, asteroid belt, Kuiper belt, and comets. From there we’ll travel to the so-called exoplanets that orbit other stars. Common themes include the presence of water, magnetic fields, giant storms, how major collisions have shaped the objects within our solar system, and some of the more bizarre features that are a result. Included will be the latest discoveries that have come from the Mars Curiosity rover, Cassini mission to Saturn, and Voyagers I and II that reached interstellar space. Finally, what does the future hold?

17) COMING OF AGE IN SOMALIAWednesday, 9/8-10/13, 12:30-1:45pmLocation: 4-118 Limit: 40Facilitator: Jerry ThurberThis class will use my experience growing up in Somalia to discuss the history, culture, politics, traditions, and life of the Somali people and the expats who live there. Because of its geographic location, Somali has long been a target of colonial powers, which has added to its rich, complicated backstory. I will use a combination of pictures, videos, story telling and artifacts to expose the class to three main topic areas. We will start with the history and geography of Somalia. Then discuss what it was like living there in the 1960’s and how the country has evolved since that time. And finally, we will cover the people of Somalia including their traditions, and their tribal and religious life. Classes will be a mix of lecture, storytelling, discussion and sharing. I intend this class to be highly informative, but also entertaining with many interesting stories as well.

18) WAKING THE SLEEPING GIANT: AMERICA’SWAR IN THE PACIFIC PT 1Monday, 9/13-10/18, 2-4pmLocation: 4-118 Limit: 30Facilitator: Claxton Lovin*World War II was a profound turning point in world history. It reshaped the nature of military strategy; it ushered in the nuclear age and established the United States as a global superpower. The course, produced in partnership with the History Channel, takes you into the sweeping story of the American fight against the Japanese. Taught by Professor Craig L. Symonds, a distinguished military historian at the US Naval War College, these lectures chronicle the global trajectory from the attack on Pearl Harbor to the birth of the Atomic Age.

19) RANDOM ACTS OF HISTORYWednesday, 9/1-9/15, 12:30-1:45pmLocation: 31-101 Limit: 35Facilitator: Bill WeissWe will take an in-depth look at events and people who helped shape postwar America, starting with Ronald Reagan and John Hinckley, including the assassination attempt and the response by the President. Then we move to the many faces of Fidel Castro, a many-sided man driven to impose his will and remake Communism in his country. Finally, we’ll meet Kemmons Wilson and Ray Kroc, two self-made visionaries who changed America by providing new mobility and food service, encouraging a surge of entrepreneurship. NOTE: this class starts on Sept 1, a week earlier than the rest of the classes.

20) THE BLACK DEATH: THE WORLD’S MOSTDEVASTATING PLAGUE PT 1 OF 2Monday, 9/13-10/18, 9:30-11:30amLocation: 31-101 Limit: 12Facilitator: Risë Johansen-Ryan

In the late 1340s, a cataclysmic plague shook medieval Europe. The bacterial disease known to us as the Black Death swept westward across the continent, leaving a path of destruction from Crimea and Constantinople to Italy, France, Spain, and ultimately most of Europe, traveling as far west as England and Iceland. Within these locations, the plague killed up to 50% of the population in less than 10 years with a staggering 75 million dead. This class will view video lectures, and have discussions.

21) GEORGE WASHINGTON’S SPIESMonday, 9/13-10/18, 2-4:30pmLocation: 4-102 Limit: 50Facilitator: Ed Wisneski*

Following the conclusion of the Revolutionary War, a British general observed, “Washington didn’t beat us. He out-spied us.” Washington placed an enormous amount of emphasis on his spies, especially his network on Long Island and New York City, known as the Culper Ring. This course will show all 10 episodes from the first of four seasons of the popular AMC television series, Turn, which aired from 2014-2017. The class will cover seasons 2-4 in subsequent OLLI sessions. The course will differentiate between the factual aspects of Turn and the licenses taken to meet demands of dramatic storytelling. The class will provide detailed descriptions of the characters, most of them actual historic figures from the highly successful Culper Ring and the British military which tried to expose them. Two books provide factual background for the course: Washington Spies by Alexander Rose, who served as the historical consultant for the series; and Valiant Ambition: George Washington, Benedict Arnold, and the Fate of the American Revolution by Nathaniel Philbrick.

45) THE AFTERLIFE OF BILLY FINGERS: HOWMY BAD-BOY BROTHER PROVED TO METHERE’S LIFE AFTER DEATHMonday; Wednesday, 9/8-10/18, 11am-12:15pm Location: Zoom Limit: 20Facilitator: John M Kohlenberger*This is a fun class for those who want to explore some of the many worlds yet to be discovered beyond the physical limitations of this world into some of the many worlds and venture of heart, soul, and mind. The fascinating events that we will discuss are based on this a by Dr. Annie Kegan. As we discuss her experiences with after death communications (ADC), many of which are in line with ancient Greek beliefs about the “walkers between worlds,” some may seem completely unbelievable and far beyond reality, but our discussions may bring some of her other worldly and heavenly experiences into modern perspective.

From the Curriculum Committee Chair, Becky GunnCurriculum Corner OLLI was a godsend to me during the pandemic. I was able to facilitate safely from home and was able to take other classes and see friends and family via Zoom. But, in many ways it felt that organizations and groups about which I cared were ‘not there.’ I now realize that OLLI was here…in a big way. We offered a wide range of classes with a great diversity of topics. We were able to invite people who were not in the Prescott area to participate, and they added a depth to the classes that we hope to continue. We were not closed…we were wide open. This perspective was amplified by the evaluations from the Spring Session.

Facilitators were described as: engaging, well organized, helpful, well prepared, “jewels”, “shining stars”, smiling, welcoming, and admirably thorough. That says that even via a new medium called Zoom, our excellence came through. Were there some tech glitches? Yes…but they were ameliorated.

The classes themselves were described as providing balanced discussions, challenging, thought provoking, enjoyable, opening up new horizons of discovery, “learning more about my beloved Prescott,” and like a group of friends getting together. One of the best comments was “the facilitator explained the subject so even novices could understand.”

In the Fall 1 offerings we have six new facilitators – all wonderfully qualified to elucidate their topical perspectives. The spectrum runs from Coming of Age in Somalia to Photography, to Food, to Art Journaling, to Twitch (what’s that? Find out…).

These new facilitators are evidence that OLLI is back. And we hope to encourage many more of you to think about subjects that you love and would like to share with other OLLI members. We want to continue to offer an even wider diversity of topics. Let us know if there are classes you wish to be presented and if you might be interested in facilitating classes about what you love. We are here to listen to and support your interests to the benefit of OLLI.

M) MUNCH & LEARN: BILL WEISS ON QUIZSHOWS OF THE 50SThursday, 9/30, 12:30-1:45pmLocation: Zoom Limit: 60Facilitator: Rudy Arena*Bill Weiss will tell us about the big-money quiz shows of the late ‘50’s that captivated tens of millions of TV viewers and brought fame and money to contestants who seemed to be unlikely matches for the subjects they chose: the humble shoemaker who was an opera expert; a Marine Corp Captain who knew gourmet French cuisine; a nerdy clerk who was a polymath scholar, and the scion of a prominent literary family seemingly struggling as a low paid instructor in an Ivy League college. Little did the public know that they were being duped by ambitious producers who rigged the quiz shows in league with network executives and corporate sponsors anxious to ring cash registers. When the deception was exposed by NY Grand Juries and Congressional hearings, Americans experienced shock and dismay that shook the nation.
