Spring Luncheon Woodstock Club, 1301 W 38th St.—Indianapolis

Saturday, April 20, 2013 11:00 am The program for the Spring Luncheon will feature the showing of the short film “The Pilgrims” by Encyclopedia Britannica at Merton Park Studios of London, England. It was filmed through a collabora-tion with Clarence Ver Steeg, Assistant Professor of History at Northwestern University. This is a 1955, 22 minutes in length, black and white film produced by John Barnes.

Be sure to plan to see this engag-ing film on the lives of the Pil-grims and Strangers and how they were able to work together for the good of all. You will get ac-quainted with Elder William Brewster, Myles Standish, William Bradford and John Carver. A theme throughout is the Pilgrims’ unwav-ering faith in God’s providence.

Menu for the Spring luncheon will include house salad with tomato, olive & cucumber dressed with white balsamic vinaigrette, chicken en phyllo stuffed with cranberry and brie, baked in phyllo dough with grain mustard cream, whipped po-tatoes, asparagus and grape to-mato garnish, rolls & butter, pecan pie, coffee/tea/lemonade. Children’s menu will include fruit cup, chicken fingers with fries and an ice cream sundae for dessert. Cost of the luncheon will be $30 for adults or $15 for children (10 and under). I graduated from Ball State University with a degree in Elementary Education in 1966 and a Master’s Degree in Education in 1970. After teaching for ten years, I returned to Ball State to obtain a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology in 1979. I spent most of my career as a behavioral health administrator. My interest in my heritage began at an early age. In 1959, an article in my hometown newspaper about my Great-Grandmother Minnie Bosworth entitled, “The Last Surviv-ing Jay County Pioneer” sparked my interest in genealogy. I did not do anything serious about learning about my an-cestors until I retired in 2010 after learning I am descended from John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley, passengers on the Mayflower. Since retirement, I enjoy spending a great deal of time with my family and friends, reading and conducting genealogy research.

Governor’s Message By Graham Morey—Indiana Society Governor

Exciting news is that your ISMD Board of Assistants has voted to move forward on a bid to host the General Society Board of Assistants meeting in Indianapolis in September 2016. Hosting this event will be a part of our Centennial Celebration. This is a major undertaking for the Indiana Society and will require help from all of our members. With the help of an event planner, a proposal has been prepared to submit at the GBOA meeting in New Orleans this September. The year 2016 will not only mark the Centennial anniversary of the Indiana Society, but it will

also be the Bicentennial of the Hoosier state. Feel free to contact any of the Board members to offer your help. A special thanks to Deputy Governor Laura Stocker for her efforts in gathering the necessary information for our bid.

The Board welcomes a new member, Laura Smith, and a returning member, Pat Scahill, to our Board. Laura will be assisting our Historians Grant Doty and his nephew Chad Doty. Pat served in various positions in the 1980’s and 1990’s and has agreed to be a board member-at-large.

Our spring luncheon meeting will be on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at Woodstock Club. Past Governor Robert Marr has ar-ranged for another short film about the Mayflower, offering another perspective of Pilgrim life. A brief business meeting at 11 AM will precede the Members Luncheon.

Scholarships Awarded to Two Tremendous Students submitted by Marsha Reynolds

Two young men have been awarded the 2013 scholarships from the Indiana Society of Mayflower De-scendants. Both are Indiana residents and one is a life member of the Society. Both of these students are very strong in the academics, service, leadership, athletics, and other extra-curricular areas. The recipi-ents of the awards and information on each awardee includes: John P. Cagnassola, a student at North Central High School in MSD Washington Township, Indianapo-lis, IN, will be receiving a $2,000 scholarship. John is a life member, and is descended from Mayflower passenger William Bradford. John plans to enroll at Purdue University in the fall. He plans to major in business or economics and, eventually, to attend law school. He hopes to become a successful busi-nessman and to make a difference with the opportunities he has been given in his life. Kyle Stucker, a student at Whiteland Community High School in Indianapolis, IN, will also be receiv-ing a $2,000 scholarship. Kyle is still being recruited but some of his possible choices of college in-clude: Wabash, Depauw, Notre Dame, and Case Western Reserve. He intends to pursue a medical pro-fession, though he is not certain as to which specialty he may choose. We warmly congratulate these two tremendous awardees and wish them great success and joy in their future education and careers. The Scholarship Committee of the Indiana Society of Mayflower Descen-dants shares great pride in these two fine young men. Cape Cod Bay, 8 December 1620 aboard the “Mayflower”

Fellow Mayflower passenger James Chilton, having completed the arduous voyage, died yesterday aboard ship before being able to place his feet upon the soil of our new settlement. In his 65th year of his age, he was the son of Lionel Chilton of Canterbury, County Kent.

We remember well his great misfortune of the year last in Leiden, when returning with his daughter from our church on the Sabbath, the 28th of April, to his home on the Langebrug, just beyond the Diefsteeg, he was grievously assaulted by a bunch of young Leiden hooligans who mistook him for an anti-Calvinist. The stoning left him temporarily unconscious in the street and he never completely recovered. This out-rage was no doubt another indication of our becoming less welcome in Leiden. He is survived by his wife and minor daughter Mary who accompanied him. Of their nine other children, amongst them who did not come with them, is another daughter, Isabella. The wife of Roger Chandler, she remains in Leiden. But three weeks earlier, he had joined forty others aboard ship in affixing his name to the combination, the first foundation of our government. James Chilton was the oldest person on the Mayflower; he died only about a month after signing the Mayflower Compact. He was the only signer of the Compact who died while the Mayflower was anchored at Cape Cod. There are two Provincetown memorials to him and others who died shipboard in November and December 1620, with a small memorial plaque at Winthrop Street Cemetery and the larger Mayflower Passengers Who Died At Sea memorial plaque at Bas Relief Park. His wife died about a month after him, dying during the First Sickness at Plymouth sometime after Janu-ary 11 or 12, 1621. James was apparently buried ashore on Cape Cod, location now unknown, as with oth-ers buried then. His wife is commemorated in Coles Hill Burial Ground in an unmarked grave. Her name appears on the Pilgrim Memorial Tomb, Plymouth, Massachusetts as "James Chilton's wife."
