Whether you teach in the classroom, as ahome-schooling parent, a scout leader, or at

an after-school program, making books is anactivity that kids of all ages enjoy. Itdevelops mechanical and practical skills likemeasuring, following directions, andsequencing; it challenges organizationalabilities; enables ownership and authorshipof a project; advances literacy and providesa crossover between right- and left-brainactivity. This workshop introduces threebasic book-binding formats with numerous

variations. Well make an accordion bookto use for a photo album, timeline, pop-up,

or a travelogue. With a pamphlet binding, well transform a narrative format into aconversation or debate and add simpleinclusions that help the artist interact withthe reader. A third binding, the stab-boundbook, introduces an Asian design thatadapts particularly well as an anthology, atlas, art gallery, or collaborative projectfor a group. At the end, youll have a varietyof models, instructions, and a head fullof ideas of why books are way cooler than

electronic readers!$87 M/$103 NM,$10 supply fee payable to instructor
