Sunshine after the rain…after the Cusco floods

In January, Cusco was hit by heavy flooding, the worst

seen in decades. 3,000 homes were destroyed,

thousands of residents had to evacuate - struggling to

meet their basic needs and in a constant battle to

prevent their homes being consumed by the rising flood

waters. Sadly, Azul Wasi was one of those homes.

LAFF worked hard to increase awareness and support

via the BBC. We also coordinated an emergency relief

effort to support Azul Wasi, who had to evacuate,

construct flood

barriers, and provide shelter, food, water, supervision

and care for the children. We’re grateful for all the

volunteer support and donations received at this crucial

time which ensured that the home now still stands and

the children remained safe throughout.

Thanks to your help Azul Wasi now has flood defences

protecting the home from potential future flooding and

we are working to repair any structural damage to the

home and its grounds as well as ensure its future

stability. Happily the boys have returned to the home

and have been able to return to school at the start of

the academic year in March.

LAFF Newsletter Spring/Summer 2010

This year we have been lucky enough to be selected

from thousands of charities to benefit from the

Vodafone World of Difference scheme - helping

people volunteer for the charity of their choice.

Sarah Oakes our founding Trustee will be spending

two months working full-time for LAFF on fundraising

and communicating with our projects in Peru to make

sure we can support them in the best possible way in

future. Find out more by clicking here.

Help them escape their fate.

Quick update following our Christmas fundraiser at The Bedford in Balham

back in December, we’re thrilled to tell you that over £1,000 was raised to

help Azul Wasi – top of their wish list was a minibus to transport the boys to

school during the rainy season and collect supplies from Cusco – which

we were able to buy in January, luckily just in time for the evacuation of

the home due to the floods…

Fancy putting on a fundraiser for LAFF? We’re looking for enthusiastic

volunteers to help us fundraise by putting on small events – Are you a

baking queen? Football king? Up-and-coming musician? Artist?

Photographer?

Why not consider a cake sale at work, an art or photo exhibition, a band

night, pub quiz, or football tournament? If you’d like to use your skills for

charity, let us know. We’d love to support you to raise money for LAFF.

Regular giving appeal

Regular donations for LAFF mean stability for Azul

Wasi, so that the home never has to worry about

paying the bills or where the food is coming from.

If we know that the basics are covered by regular

donations, we can help the home advance to

become self-sufficient in the long term, through

financing sustainability projects and building

projects to increase its capacity to provide for

more street children.

Please consider donating £5, £10, £20 a month or

whatever you are able to. It’s quick, it’s easy, and

it will really make a difference. Just click here now

Thank you for your ongoing support!
