Hospice Patron, Lord Daventry said: “I cannot believe that this year we shall all be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Mary Ann Evans Hospice.

I have personally been involved as a Patron for the last 16 years and whenever I make a visit I am blown away by the continued kindness and dedication that the army of volunteers show towards the patients. It makes such a difference to so many people’s lives who come here. It is so important not to feel alone and in so many ways the Hospice is like having a second family. Of course, it relies primarily on the generosity of its local community to fund its free services and so every year we are very much indebted to the many people who either in groups, or individually, have supported the Mary Ann Evans Hospice by raising money doing events and challenges or requesting donations instead of birthday or anniversary gifts. The kindness of the local people never ceases to amaze me and as Mark Twain once famously remarked “kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see”.

I would like to once again thank everybody for their continued support.

Welcome

On the 16th March I was honoured to represent the Mary Ann Evans Hospice at the State Rooms, Speakers House at the House of Commons in London to celebrate the work of hospices across England.

The evening included speeches from Dr Sarah Wollaston (MP), Ben Gummer (Parliamentary Under Secretary of State) and Heidi Alexander (Shadow Health Secretary) who shared how important it was for them to be working together on an appropriate way forward. We listened to a very moving personal story from Sarah Ezekiel

who lives with Motor Neurone Disease, then Baroness Finlay closed the formal part of the evening. She thanked all the Hospices for the work in which they are involved. There was also an opportunity to meet up with our local MP so I had a little time with Marcus Jones who remains a firm supporter of the hospice.

Wednesday 23rd March saw Liz Hancock and me driving up the M6 to a conference being held at Keele University. The Bereavement Service had been nominated for an award for the innovative support strands it offers to people in our community. We were one of three hospices nominated out of fifty other hospices. St. Giles Hospice won the award, but it was still excellent publicity for the hospice, as we were able to showpiece our service verbally and through a poster, which was displayed in the conference information area of the university. Our huge thanks go to our amazing volunteers and staff who offer so much to a wide group of people – it is a fantastic service we are very proud of.

Two recent extraordinary events for the Hospice

Introducing Rachel our new Day Hospice Team Leader. Rachel joined the Mary Ann Evans Hospice in September 2015 and started in her new role as Team Leader at the beginning of April.

I have been a Registered Nurse for over 25 years now and lived in Nuneaton since 2001 with my family. Previously, I worked at the George Eliot Hospital and in Care Home Management for several years. I am delighted to be working at the Hospice; it is a special place, very supportive rather like a large family.

At the end of last year I visited various other Hospices to see how they worked and to plan our vision for the future. Over recent months we have implemented promising changes and developments that have revitalised the day hospice here at Mary Ann Evans Hospice.

We are excited to be working in partnership with the newly appointed Heart Failure Nurse at George Eliot Hospital, in establishing a new patient and carer support group for those with Heart Failure. We have also developed a strong relationship with the community Parkinson’s Nurse from whom we have seen increased referrals of patients with Parkinson’s disease and other neurological conditions.

The most significant change to the day hospice has been the new 12-week programme of care which we now offer patients. The aim of this new programme is to empower people with life limiting and terminal conditions to actively manage their conditions themselves, enabling them to live fully and enjoy the best quality of life possible, while also allowing for a substantial increase in the number of patients across the North Warwickshire area to whom we can offer our services to. This increased capacity has challenged us to seek new sources of referrals. We have strengthened our links with our local Hospitals, Community Nurse Specialists and District Nurses by attending team meetings and updating them on our new developments.

Moving forward we look forward to continued efforts to further increase the Mary Ann Evans Hospice profile in the community and so make the most out of these exciting new changes.

Nuneaton Support GroupWhen I heard about the Mayor’s Appeal for a Hospice back in 1987 I decided to organise a barn dance, which raised £450.00. I was invited by Bill Olner to visit the Town Hall to present him with the cheque. Little did I know that that was the beginning of my 28 years involvement with the Mary Ann Evans Hospice.

I have now been the chairman of the Nuneaton Support Group for 25 years and our small but very committed group have since been raising money year on year totalling £500,000.00.

We hold an annual Christmas Raffle and more recently have hosted the famous Merry Midwives shows at the Abbey Theatre in Nuneaton raising a magnificent total of £23,500 over the past 9 years.We are all 28 years older than when we started on our fundraising journey so please when we are standing on the streets or outside the shops of Nuneaton, Bedworth, Atherstone or Bulkington look upon us kindly and pop a contribution in our tins. We are grateful for any support we can get.

Young FriendsOur Young Friends Group is made up of students from King Edwards V1 College and is an invaluable group of supporters who work alongside the fundraising team to help achieve the charitable funds required to be raised each and every year. They hold their own cake sales and fundraisers at the college.

Our Support Groups

Exhall Support GroupWe have been involved with the Hospice from the very beginning when the first appeal took place to build a Hospice and have been raising funds for over 27 years. We have our regular coffee mornings at St Giles small hall on the third Wednesday of the month at 10.20am.

We are a small group of helpers who are dedicated to help raise funds for the work of the Hospice and we presented a cheque for £1,410.50 at the end of the year. We have regular customers who come to the coffee mornings and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee a piece of cake and a chat.

Coleshill Support GroupBack in 1983, Dad died of lung cancer and my sister and I raised some funds for St. Mary’s Hospice in Selly Oak.

From then on, bitten by the fundraising bug, we joined together with a few friends and began holding dances at our local social club, donating the proceeds to various charities. Reading local information in the library one day, we discovered that we had a local hospice in Nuneaton and invited them to come along and receive a cheque. Then along came fundraiser Janet Griffin!! (now Kavanagh). We underestimated Janet’s powers of persuasion (have you ever been ‘Janeted’?) So, in 1999, the Coleshill Support Group was born.

Since then we’ve trundled along having fun & raising some funds along the way. We are a

small but happy group and meetings are still very rare but we are very proud to be associated with the Mary Ann Evans Hospice and very much look forward to celebrating 25 years of fantastic work with them.

Now in its third year the Sunflower Memories Appeal is a beautiful way to celebrate the life of some you love. Each sunflower will be planted in the wildflower garden in the Hospice grounds for the month of June forming a lovely carpet of yellow blooms. Sunflower Memories Appeal

Regular giving plays a crucial part of Hospice fundraising. It is one of the most cost effective ways to raise vital funds to meet the day to day running of all charity organisations such as the Mary Ann Evans Hospice and it allows us to plan for the future.

May I please ask that you seriously consider becoming a hospice ‘Friend for the Future’ in this, our 25th Anniversary year? Our ‘Friends’ choose what amount to donate and how often and payments can be cancelled at any time. The easiest way to donate is by standing order as payments are automatic and therefore we can keep all administration costs to a minimum.

Some charities will use agencies to recruit donors and take a large commission in the process. You’ve probably been approached in the street by such organisations. This is usually followed by calls asking for an increase in your donation. All our regular donors deal directly with us, no middle men and no large commissions to pay. We do not ‘pester’ our donors for more money and please be assured that .90p of every £1 you donate goes on our patient services. Our most popular donation is £13.00 every 3 months, which equates to £1.00

per week. You have to ask, what does that pound buy you every week? When you add it to all our other ‘Friends’ pounds it buys Hospice at Home care, it buys Bereavement support, it buys Day Care for our patients and much more.

If you are interested, please feel free to call me and I can take you through the simple set up process. You may not need the services we offer but your pound each week will ensure that we are here for the people who do.
