Spring–Summer 2013
Middlethorpe Hall Hotel, Restaurant & SpaWHAT’S ON AT MIDDLETHORPE
www.middlethorpe.com
After all the partying of last summer with the Olympics and the Diamond Jubilee, you may well have expected a rather more sedate 2013 season. This will not
be the case, and please read through this latest newsletter, as we have organised another wealth of events, which we believe will appeal to all tastes. Some will focus on the culinary or gardening strengths we are renowned for, and others will coincide with the many Festivals taking place in our historic City of York.
Many guests have requested cookery demonstrations and I am delighted that Nick Evans our Head Chef has agreed to run two courses here, and he will also be involved with the York Food and Drink Festival in September. We are giving you additional opportunities to (re)discover his passion and skills during our exclusive ‘Grands Crûs’ evening and when he will work alongside other renowned Chefs for a very special dinner. Of course do not miss our very popular RHS tours with David Barker our long standing Head Gardener or the special Benjamin Britten recital with Tenor Andrew O’Brien and Treble Hugh Reid.
The team and I very much look forward to the pleasure of your visit and will work hard to provide a special experience.

The credit for the custom of this quintessential British ritual goes to Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, one of HM Queen Victoria’s ladies-in-waiting.
In the early 19th Century the well-to-do ate a huge breakfast, little lunch and a very late dinner, leaving the Duchess hungry and with a “sinking feeling” by late afternoon. One afternoon, she instructed her servants to serve tea, bread and butter and tiny cakes in her boudoir. The experience was so delightful that Anna repeated it every afternoon thereafter.
Soon others followed the Duchess’ lead and in just a few decades the custom of “taking tea” in the afternoon became well-established. At first the practice was limited to the upper class, but it became so popular that teashops and tearooms began opening for the enjoyment of the general public.
Afternoon Tea at Middlethorpe Hall
Afternoon Tea at Middlethorpe is a long-standing tradition enhanced by a local luxury connection with the old established family tea merchants “Taylors of Harrogate”. Each afternoon this English tradition takes place in the 18th Century Drawing Room, in front of the fire place or facing the south lawn, from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm (3:00 pm at weekends). Traditional Afternoon Tea is £18 per person and Champagne Afternoon Tea £27 per person.
