Effective IT Service Management

To ITIL and Beyond!

IT service management (ITSM) is the group of pro-cesses and functions that oil the wheels of the IT ma-chine. Without ITSM, every IT project and systemwould deteriorate over time until failure. ITIL is therecognized best-practice standard for ITSM, and hasbeen around since the late 1980s, with ITIL version 3published just recently. However, many of today’s ITproblems have been around for just as long -so in order to manage IT effectively, organizationsmust go beyond the ITIL framework. Rob Addy pro-vides IT service managers and professionals withpractical guidance on delivering and managing ITservices in an effective and efficient manner by ex-tending the ITIL approach to deliver proactive andpragmatic IT service management. His book is a can-did look at the relative merits of currently acceptedwisdom regarding the provision of IT services, usingthe principles of the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL)guidance series. It describes IT service managementprocesses related to service [..]

Current Research Issues

Managing in the Information Economy: Current Re-search Issues presents the recent research directionsthat address the issue of management in this econ-omy. The contributors include leading researcherswith interests in a diverse set of topics. While thevolume cannot give a complete and comprehensivepicture, it can provide introductions to importantareas, and point to some important topics for fu-ture research. Therefore the book begins with per-spectives at the level of the economy as a whole andthen progressively addresses industrial structure, sectors, functions (e-commerce) and business prac-tices. Introductions to the main sections and the pa-pers in each section are provided. The volume is or-ganized around six sections: The Information Econ-omy; Structure and the Organization of the Informa-tion Economy; Marketing and Ecommerce; Emerg-ing Issues in the Information Economy; Operationsin the Information Economy; and Empirical Stud-ies of Business Practices. Risk-Averse Capacity Control in

Revenue Management

Traditionally, revenue management models aimat a maximization of expected revenue, i.e. a risk-neutral decision-maker is assumed. During the lastfew years, however, the consideration of revenuerisk has gained more and more attention. By fail-ing to suggest mechanisms for reducing unfavor-able revenue levels, traditional risk-neutral capaci-ty control models fall short of meeting the needs ofa risk-averse planner. This is why this book revisesthe well-known capacity control problem in revenuemanagement from the perspective of a risk-aversedecision-maker. Modelling an expected utility maxi-mizing decision maker, the problem is formulated asa risk-sensitive Markov decision process. Special em-phasis is put on the existence of structured optimalpolicies. Numerical examples illustrate the results.

Reference Modeling

Efficient Information Systems Design Through Reuse of Infor-

mation Models

Reusability of information models has been dis-cussed in science and practice for many years. Ref-erence models are information models that are de-veloped with the aim of being reused for differentbut similar application scenarios. They primarilypromise time and cost savings, since parts of the ref-erence models can be reused. The topic of referencemodeling is addressed in this book from differentperspectives: Besides reference modeling languagesthat provide special modeling language concepts forthe development and application of reference mod-els, reference modeling methodologies are discussed, which additionally provide procedure models for theconstruction and application of reference models. Moreover, particular reference models are discussedand evaluated.

Irreversible Decisions under

Uncertainty

Optimal Stopping Made Easy

In real life, as well as in economic models, individ-uals often make decisions in an uncertain environ-ment. In many cases, a problem which an optimiz-ing agent faces can be formulated or reformulat-ed as a problem of optimal timing of a certain irre-versible or partially reversible action or optimal stop-ping problem. In this book, the authors present analternative approach to optimal stopping problems. The basic ideas and techniques of the approach canbe explained much simpler than the standard meth-ods in the literature on optimal stopping problems. The monograph will teach the reader to apply thetechnique to many problems in economics and fi-nance, including new ones. From the technical pointof view, the method can be characterized as optionpricing via the Wiener-Hopf factorization.

Time-Varying Network

Optimization

The express purpose of Time-Varying Network Op-timization is to describe, in a unified and self-con-tained manner, a series of models, propositions, andalgorithms developed in recent years on time-vary-ing networks. References and discussions on rele-vant problems and studies that have appeared in theliterature are integrated in the book. The book con-sists of eight chapters, in which the following prob-lems are formulated and examined: (1) the short-est path problem, (2) minimum-spanning tree prob-lem, (3) maximum flow problem, (4) minimum costflow problem, (5) maximum capacity path problem,(6) quickest path problem, (7) multi-criteria prob-lem, and (8) the generalized flow problem. The time-varying traveling salesman problem and the Chinesepostman problem are presented in a chapter togeth-er with the time-varying generalized problem. Whilethese topics will be described all within the frame-work of time-varying networks, our plan is to makeeach chapter relatively self-contained so that eachcan be [..]

Features

The Market for Corporate Control in

Japan

M&As, Hostile Takeovers and Regulatory Framework

This book analyzes the modern trend in the JapaneseM and A market and reveal from different angles theprocess of convergence to a new monitoring mod-el of the corporation: "the market for corporate con-trol". A prima facie verification is based on the exam-ination of the evolution of the M and A environmentin the last twenty years including statistics, analy-sis of cultural and structural impediments, and eco-nomic-political reforms. Then, the analysis of sev-enteen cases of hostile takeover and of the processof transformation of the regulatory framework gov-erning takeovers related legal issues particularly fo-cused on the important METI-MOJ Guidelines of2005, will further corroborate the final argument. In-side the academic debate of theories of convergenceand path-dependence, the conclusions of the authorultimately support the hypothesis that the Japanesecorporate control has converged to a "hybrid Ameri-canized version of the model of market for corporatecontrol". Advanced Robust and

Nonparametric Methods in

Efficiency Analysis

Methodology and Applications

Providing a systematic and comprehensive treatmentof recent developments in efficiency analysis, thisreadable book makes available an intuitive yet rig-orous presentation of advanced nonparametric androbust methods. This flexible toolbox can be usedin theories based on the neoclassical theory of pro-duction and its alternatives, including evolutionarytheories. The methods are complemented by empiri-cal analysis of three different economic fields: scien-tific research, mutual funds industry and the insur-ance sector. The research demonstrates the utility ofthe toolbox for a wide range of economic issues, in-cluding the analysis of economies of scale and scope, dynamics of age and agglomeration effects, trade-offs in production and service activities, and expla-nations of efficiency differentials. Of interest to ap-plied economists broadly, this book will also be of in-terest to those focused on Operations Research and/or Management Science.

Logistics Outsourcing Relationships

Measurement, Antecedents, and Effects of Logistics Outsourc-

ing Performance

In recent years, logistics outsourcing has gained in-creasing importance and today is used by a largenumber of firms across virtually all industries world-wide. Logistics service providers have developed awide array of services that are utilized to improve lo-gistics processes - and mainly to cut costs. This bookuses state-of-the-art scientific methods to reveal thatmost firms currently do not realize the full potentialof logistics outsourcing. It shows the complexity ofoutsourcing performance and that its true driverslie in the relationship between service providers andtheir customers. Through the results of a large-scaleempirical survey, the book also emphasizes the im-portance of a firm's approach towards outsourcing:solely striving for cost reductions may be a dead end, while the often overlooked increased logistics ser-vice levels are equally important for boosting logis-tics performance. In the light of current outsourc-ing practices, this indicates substantial room for im-provement for most firms.

Emergence and Survival of New

Businesses

Econometric Analyses

Two very topical research questions are addressed inthis book: Which are the determinants of new busi-ness formation and their survival, and will businessstart-ups, especially in the service sector, create em-ployment and thereby generate growth? The analy-sis is based on a unique dataset consisting of the pop-ulation of all businesses with at least one employeeunder social security in Germany in all private in-dustries (manufacturing and services). State-of-the-art econometric techniques are used throughout thebook, taking into account the multi-dimensionalcharacter of the determinants. Using Germany as anexample, the book gives a comprehensive review onentrepreneurial activity, and draws the general con-clusion that new businesses should not be subsidizedwith a watering can.

Management by Measurement

Designing Key Indicators and Performance Measurement Sys-

tems

A world that is changing faster and faster forcescompanies to a continuous performance monitor-ing. Indicators give the impression to be the real en-gine of organizations or even the economy at large. But performance indicators are not simple observa-tion tools. They can have a deep “normative” effect, which can modify organizational behaviour and in-fluence key decisions. Companies are what they mea-sure! The selection of good performance indicatorsis not an easy process. This monograph focuses onthe designing of a Performance Measurement System(PMS), knowing that “magic rules” to identify themdo not exist. Some indicators seem right and easy tomeasure, but have subtle, counter-productive conse-quences. Other indicators are more difficult to mea-sure, but focus the enterprise on those decisions andactions that are critical to success. This book suggestshow to identify indicators that achieve a balance inthese effects and enhance long-term profitability.

Comprehensive monograph (in step with actualpractice) on the “art” of designing indicators neededfor performance management and quality control

Network Science, Nonlinear Science

and Infrastructure Systems

Network Science, Nonlinear Science and Infras-tructure Systems has been written by leading schol-ars in these areas. Its express purpose is to developcommon theoretical underpinnings to better solvemodern infrastructural problems. It is felt by manywho work in these fields that many modern com-munication problems, ranging from transportationnetworks to telecommunications, Internet, supplychains, etc., are fundamentally infrastructure prob-lems. Moreover, these infrastructure problems wouldbenefit greatly from a confluence of theoretical andmethodological work done with the areas of NetworkScience, Dynamical Systems and Nonlinear Science. This book is dedicated to the formulation of infras-tructural tools that will better solve these types of in-frastructural problems.

Features

There is much interest in infrastructural problemsthese days, including the complexities of transporta-tion, the Internet, supply chains, and many other in-frastructural networks. Preferences in Negotiations

The Attachment Effect

Negotiations are ubiquitous in business, politics, and private life. In many cases their outcome is ofgreat importance. Yet, negotiators frequently act ir-rationally and fail to reach mutually beneficial agree-ments. Cognitive biases like overconfidence, egocen-trism, and the mythical fixed pie illusion oftentimesforeclose profitable results. A further cognitive bias isthe attachment effect: Parties are influenced by theirsubjective expectations formed on account of theexchange of offers, they form reference points, andloss aversion potentially leads to a change of prefer-ences when expectations change. This book presentsa motivation, formalization, and substantiation ofthe attachment effect. Thereby, preferences and be-havior are approached from a microeconomic anda psychological perspective. Two experiments showclear evidence for a systematic bias. The results canbe used for prescriptive advice to negotiators: eitherfor debiasing or to systematically affect the counter-party.

Cooperative Systems

Control and Optimization

Cooperative systems are pervasive in a multitude ofenvironments and at all levels. We find them at themicroscopic biological level up to complex ecologicalstructures. They are found in single organisms andthey exist in large sociological organizations. Coop-erative systems can be found in machine applicationsand in situations involving man and machine work-ing together. They have some common elements: 1)more than one entity, 2) the entities have behaviorsthat influence the decision space, 3) entities share atleast one common objective, and 4) entities share in-formation whether actively or passively. Because ofthe clearly important role cooperative systems playin areas such as military sciences, biology, communi-cations, robotics, and economics, just to name a few,the study of cooperative systems has intensified. Thisbook provides an insight in the basic understandingof cooperative systems as well as in theory, modeling, and applications of cooperative control, optimizationand related problems.

Business Ethics of Innovation

Firms that operate in a market economy often de-pend upon innovations in order to achieve compet-itive advantages that sustainably secure their sur-vival. Business ethics is thus largely concerned withquestions about the decisional freedoms involvedin innovation processes. Innovations oftentimesraise novel questions about the role of the state orthe structure of society. Business ethics needs to pro-vide a framework for balancing the different perspec-tives, values, and interests at stake. This balance mustbe achieved at the level of the firm in order to facil-itate adequate long term decisions, but it should al-so be sought at higher, including regulatory, levels.Achieving this balance will require an ethical frame-work for entrepreneurial action. The particular disci-plines engaged in generating innovations as well asall relevant fields of applied ethics should be involvedin the balancing process. Business Ethics of Innova-tion is thus necessarily an interdisciplinary endeav-our. This volume [..]

Elements of Multinational Strategy

This textbook on international business integratesthe academic study of international trade and for-eign direct investment with the actual strategic andoperational decisions of exporters and multination-al enterprises. The book aims to merge managerialdecision making in the internationally oriented firmwith the conceptual tools provided by internation-al economics. The book proceeds as follows. Likemost firms, we begin with exportingand importing, and tackle issues raised by overseas investmentlater. We first analyze the gains from trade and then enu-merate themany costs of cross-border goods and ser-vice transactions. Next weapply the four elementsof multinational strategy - factor advantages, tradecosts, scale economies, and market sizes - to the deci-sion of whichmultinational form best suits each firm.We then take up issues of centralimportance to firmsthat invest overseas: exchange rate risk, politicalrisk, taxation, and expatriate assignments.

An Application to Specialty Chemicals Production Network

Design

More and more often practitioners in process indus-try have to adapt their global production networks tochanges in the competitive environment. A majori-ty of the supply network design models proposed byacademia does not sufficiently capture the econom-ic and technical questions that have to be resolved. This work seeks to provide the necessary operationsresearch decision support tools. It builds on the ex-ample of specialty chemicals industry, which faces astrong increase of competitive pressure and histori-cally grown production networks that typically lacka coherent design strategy. Decision makers have todefine a global production network re-design strat-egy. Therefore, the book proposes a planning pro-cess split into the two phases: global production net-work optimization and individual site selection. Tosupport the former a comprehensive Mixed-IntegerLinear Programming model is proposed while an ap-proach based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process issuggested for the latter. Understanding Autonomous

Logistics

The Impact of Autonomy on Management, Information, Com-

munication and Material Flow

One of the great challenges in flexible productionand supply chains is the availability of necessary in-formation at any time and any place. As a result ofincreasing dynamical and structural complexity ofstructures and processes in production it is oftenimpossible to make all necessary information avail-able to a central instance in real time and to performappropriate measures of control in terms of a de-fined target system. A fast and flexible adaptation tochanging basic conditions ought to be achieved byestablishing autonomous logistics processes. In thiscontext several fundamental questions concerningautonomous cooperating logistics processes were in-vestigated: The identification problem: What are au-tonomous logistics processes and how do they dif-fer from conventionally managed processes? The de-scription problem: Which changes will autonomycause in order processing? One of the first results is adefinition for the term autonomy for applications inengineering science. Just-in-Time Scheduling

Models and Algorithms for Computer and Manufacturing Sys-

tems

Just-in-Time Scheduling: Models and Algorithms forReal Time Operating Systems is the first exposito-ry treatment surveying the theoretical work on com-puter systems models and algorithms utilized in just-in-time scheduling. With the impact of globalizationand supply chains on manufacturing, there are im-mense amounts of material flowing through supplychains at any given time worldwide. Therefore thescheduling of all the stages of material arriving at dif-ferent geographical points at precise times is a highlysignificant problem. Moreover, the theoretical workin this area has larger ramifications for operationalscheduling in many application areas. The schedul-ing models and algorithms presented and illustratedin the book will be done so in the context of exten-sive use of computer systems in a "real time context."The book will survey and synthesize all the researchin this topical area.

Features

Had its beginnings with Japanese manufacturers es-tablishing the paradigm in the 1980’s and set intomotion the inventory systems research that led tothe field of Supply Chain Management As the fieldof Supply Chain Management matured, maintainingthe precise flow of goods to maintain inventories ona 'just-in-time' basis remains a major challenge Hasdeveloped operating solutions that have applicationsin [..]

Trends in Supply Chain Design and

Management

Technologies and Methodologies

New challenges in supply chain design and manage-ment emerged after the rapid development of infor-mation and network technologies and market re-quirements. Four of these new technologies are: Ra-dio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology;mobile transaction technology; information han-dling and storage technology; and multi-agent tech-nology. They can enable companies to change theirthinking about supply chain management to copewith these changes. New methodologies include: sus-tainable supply chain management, advanced supplychain planning, available-to-promise (ATP) systemsand lean supply chain design and management. Thisedited book describes new trends in supply chaindesign and management with an emphasis on tech-nologies and methodologies and contains guidelinesdetailing the real-world applications of these tech-nologies and methodologies. This book is of interestto researchers and practitioners and can also be usedas a reference handbook by lecturers and postgradu-ate students in this field.

A Risk-Benefit Perspective on Early

Customer Integration

Customer integration in the early innovation phasehas been considered the method of choice in theo-ry and practice. Growing experience with the con-cept has shown unexpected side effects that mayeven outweigh its recognized advantages. Therefore, management needs to be able to assess in advancewhether the involvement of customers will add over-all value to each particular innovationproject. To support but not to replace the finalmanagerial decision, a mathematical formula is de-veloped. It can be applied to all kinds of pro-cess structures, takes into account the risks and ben-efits contingent on a company's situation as well asrisk-reducing and benefit-increasing measures andtranslates them into numerical values. The resultingfigure indicates the prospective value of customer in-tegration in a specific project.

Introduction to Modern Time Series

Analysis

This book presents modern developments in timeseries econometrics that are applied to macroeco-nomic and financial time series. It attempts to bridgethe gap between methods and realistic applications. This book contains the most important approach-es to analyse time series which may be stationary ornonstationary. Modelling and forecasting univariatetime series is the starting point. For multiple station-ary time series Granger causality tests and vector au-toregressive models are presented. For real appliedwork the modelling of nonstationary uni- or multi-variate time series is most important. Therefore, unitroot and cointegration analysis as well as vector er-ror correction models play a central part. Modellingvolatilities of financial time series with autoregressiveconditional heteroskedastic models is also treated.

Guanxi and Business Strategy

Theory and Implications for Multinational Companies in China

"Guanxi and Business Strategy" elaborates upon atopic of paramount importance to both academ-ic scholars and managers doing business with Chi-na: the impact of personal relationships (guanxi)on business affairs. In the Chinese cultural and so-cio-economic environment, how are the ubiqui-tous practices of guanxi to be considered in en-trepreneurial strategies? Rather than explaining theemergence of guanxi and its persistence – in spiteof the existence of a market economy – with Confu-cianism, the author applies the phenomenon to themethodology of New Economic Sociology. By inte-grating guanxi into a business context, he shows thatthe commercial utilization of guanxi with suppliers, customers, competitors and authorities yields signif-icant sustainable competitive advantages. As guanxipractices, however, may pose risks to unsus-pecting managers, guanxi-based business strategiesare also assessed in terms of compliance with legaland ethical standards.

Hidden Markov Models in Finance

A number of methodologies have been employedto provide decision making solutions to a whole as-sortment of financial problems in today's globalizedmarkets. Hidden Markov Models in Finance by Ma-mon and Elliott will be the first systematic applica-tion of these methods to some special kinds of fi-nancial problems; namely, pricing options and vari-ance swaps, valuation of life insurance policies, in-terest rate theory, credit risk modeling, risk manage-ment, analysis of future demand and inventory level, testing foreign exchange rate hypothesis, and earlywarning systems for currency crises. Systemic Governance addresses accounting and ac-countability and develops conceptual tools to en-hance the capacity of policy makers and managers. The structures and processes of international rela-tions and governance need to be re-considered toallow diversity to the extent that is does not under-mine the freedoms of others. The book makes a pleafor systemic governance. Policy makers and man-agers need to work with rather than within theoreti-cal and methodological frameworks to achieve multi-dimensional and multilayered policy decisions. Con-ceptual tools can be used to enhance systemic gov-ernance. The closest we can get to truth is throughcompassionate dialogue that explores paradoxes andconsiders the rights and responsibilities of caretak-ers. Case studies and conceptual tools enliven thetext.

Follows a practical approach including case studiesand conceptual tools

Funds, Flows and Time

An Alternative Approach to the Microeconomic Analysis of

Productive Activities

This book deals with concepts of microeconomicproduction theory, using the fund-flow model ofNicholas Georgescu-Roegen as a basic reference. This long-neglected model allows for a representa-tion of productive operations that incorporates thetime dimension and can be easily accommodated toempirical application. Through a detailed analysis ofthe organization of productive processes, the authorsestablish a link between the practical tools of processtiming optimisation used in operational research, and the fund-flow model. In addition, they go be-yond the original model by extending the analysis toservice activities, making special reference to trans-port operations and the development of informationassets. The book sheds new light on long-establishedconcepts of microeconomic production theory andcombines general theoretical analysis with referencesto management tools.

Revenue Management with Flexible

Products

Models and Methods for the Broadcasting Industry

Remarkable features of revenue management (RM)problems in the cargo, manufacturing and broad-casting industries are so-called flexible products."Flexibility" means that the actual mode of produc-tion is not defined at the time of purchase, but canbe chosen later on by the service provider. This bookis among the first to analyze RM problems with flex-ible products and RM in broadcasting companies. The implications of flexibility are explicitly taken in-to account in the models and methods presented. As an aside, the book contains descriptions of algo-rithms to generate stochastic demand data streamsfor general RM problems. An implementation asa Microsoft Windows executable file is available, which can directly be used both by theoreticians andpractitioners in their own simulation studies. Thisbook will be of great value for researchers, managersand students interested in RM with flexible productsin general and broadcasting companies in particular.

Corporate Taxation in a Dynamic

World

This book analyzes the economic principles of mod-ern corporate taxation. With respect to the existingproducts it represents a novelty in at least two re-spects. First of all, it analyzes not only the effects oftaxation on firms' marginal choices, but also focuseson the impact of taxation on discrete choices, such asplant location, R and D investment, and new market-ing programs. The second novelty is represented bythe application of option pricing techniques to cor-porate taxation. To give an idea of the importance ofoptions it is sufficient to say that managers are awarethat new business programs are an opportunity andnot an obligation. This means that they behave asif they owned option-rights. Due to the partial irre-versibility of their choices, they know that the exer-cise of such options reduces their business flexibility.

Innovation, Market Archetypes and

Outcome

An Integrated Framework

Innovation is the key to firm competitiveness andgrowth yet studying innovation is much like the an-cient parable about a group of blind men each touch-ing a different part of an elephant. This book is afresh new approach to understanding innovation –market linkages using one unified framework. Thebook examines an integrated innovation environ-ment. Four market archetypes as well as the marketoutcome for each archetype are described. Innova-tion dynamics including commoditization, the con-stant innovation challenge and the sustainability ofinnovation are analyzed along with cases includingthe iPod, Lego, Barbie, the browser wars and Google.A diagnostic matrix is presented which enables oneto take a ´snapshot´ of a product in the innovationenvironment. This book is an invaluable tool for theacademic, the manager and the consultant to under-stand ‘where’ a firm is located in an innovation envi-ronment, `why’ it is so located and provides valuableclues as to ‘what’ to do when designing strategy.

Costs and Benefits of Collective

Pension Systems

The Dutch pension system is often praised as one ofthe best in the world: it is efficient, it provides cer-tainty to participants and it preserves cohesion andsolidarity among workers and pensioners. This bookpresents these benefits in detail, supported by quan-titative evidence. It also discusses the aspects of thesystem that are less favourable, however, such as im-plicit value transfers from younger to older genera-tions that limit mobility of labour. The analyses ofboth benefits and costs will help pension fund man-agers, boards of trustees, supervisors, and researchersto understand and to improve pension systems cur-rently in place around the world. Semantic Web Services

Concepts, Technologies, and Applications

In just a few years, service-oriented architectures(SOA) and Web services not only gained consider-able interest in computer science research, they werealso taken up with unanimity by all major interna-tional players in the IT industry. Outsourcing to India - A Legal

Handbook

For the benefits offered by outsourcing and off-shoring, organisations outsourcing to India musthowever recognise that there are real risks involved, and allocating such risk through a well constructedcontract is a crucial step in minimizing such risk. Asis the case with respect to any material agreement, the structure of an outsourcing agreement is impor-tant because it embodies the rights, remedies, du-ties and obligations of the parties and provides ablueprint for the parties' relationship. When con-tracts transcend national boundaries, the nationallegal regime of any single country becomes inade-quate. When the parties to the contract are locatedin different countries, at least two systems of law im-pinge upon the transaction and the rules of Inter-national Law come into play. Clauses however ad-dressing certain issues can only be governed by Indi-an Law. Specific legal factors around Data Process-ing, Intellectual Property and staffing implications(TUPE) must also be given careful consideration.

Business Process Management

Concepts, Languages, Architectures

Business process management is usually treated fromtwo different perspectives: business administrationand computer science. While business administra-tion professionals tend to consider information tech-nology as a subordinate aspect for experts to handle,by contrast computer scientists often consider busi-ness goals and organizational regulations as termsthat do not deserve much thought but require theappropriate level of abstraction. Mathias Weske ar-gues that the communities involved need to share acommon understanding of the principles underlyingbusiness process management. To this end, he devel-ops an overall picture that describes core BPM con-cepts and technologies and explains their relation-ships. This picture covers high-level business aspectslike business goals, strategies, and value chains, butit concentrates on process modeling techniques andprocess enactment platforms, taking into account thedifferent stakeholders involved. Foreign-Exchange-Rate Forecasting

with Artificial Neural Networks

The book focuses on forecasting foreign exchangerates via artificial neural networks. It creates and ap-plies the highly useful computational techniques ofArtificial Neural Networks (ANNs) to foreign-ex-change-rate forecasting. The result is an up-to-datereview of the most recent research developments inforecasting foreign exchange rates coupled with ahighly useful methodological approach to predict-ing rate changes in foreign currency exchanges. For-eign Exchange Rate Forecasting with Artificial Neu-ral Networks is targeted at both the academic andpractitioner audiences. Managers, analysts and tech-nical practitioners in financial institutions across theworld will have considerable interest in the book, and scholars and graduate students studying finan-cial markets and business forecast will also have con-siderable interest in the book.

Features

The book’s modeling framework is multi-level en-abling agent of an intelligent foreign-exchange-rate-forecasting methodology. Adding to the methodolo-gy is a decision-support system, which can be deliv-ered by both a client/server model and widely-usedweb technologies   Because of the highly usefulcomputational techniques of Artificial Neural Net-works (ANNs) to foreign-exchange-rate forecasting, managers, [..]

Strategic Retail Management

Text and International Cases

"Strategic Retail Management - Text and Interna-tional Cases" is devoted to the dynamic developmentof retailing. The various strategy concepts adoptedby retailing companies and their implementation inpractice are at the core of the book. This is not a tra-ditional textbook or collection of case studies, butis intended to demonstrate the complex and mani-fold questions of retail management in the form of15 lessons that provide a thematic overview of key is-sues and illustrate them with the help of comprehen-sive case studies. Internationally known retail com-panies are used as examples to facilitate an under-standing of what is involved in strategic retail man-agement and to present some best practices. Further-more, the book can be used in education as a basisfor working with case studies. For this purpose, thecase studies are integrated into the lessons in such away that they provide additional content and a spe-cific application of the individual lessons. That is,they form part of the main [..]

Modeling Data Irregularities and

Structural Complexities in Data

Envelopment Analysis

DEA is computational at its core and this book willbe one of several books that we will look to publishon the computational aspects of DEA. This book byZhu and Cook will deal with the micro aspects ofhandling and modeling data issues in modeling DEAproblems. DEA's use has grown with its capabilityof dealing with complex "service industry" and the"public service domain" types of problems that re-quire modeling both qualitative and quantitative da-ta. This will be a handbook treatment dealing withspecific data problems including the following: (1)imprecise data, (2) inaccurate data, (3) missing da-ta, (4) qualitative data, (5) outliers, (6) undesirableoutputs, (7) quality data, (8) statistical analysis, (9)software and other data aspects of modeling complexDEA problems. In addition, the book will demon-strate how to visualize DEA results when the data ismore than 3-dimensional, and how to identify effi-ciency units quickly and accurately.

Features

There certainly is a need for such a book. We havehad issues for a long time on how to deal with com-putation/data variety problems in the DEA litera-ture The authors are well recognized in the areas andhave done substantial research and consulting in thecomputational and data areas in DEA. I believe thebook will be of high quality based upon their author-ity and experience Wade Cook and Joe Zhu are well[..]
