Oscar is a 96 year old senior whohas lived a fun and full life. Widowed,he has two grown children and asenior caregiver that helps him stayindependent. Oscar and his caregiverJim like to drive around the outskirtsof San Antonio looking at the oil rigsand window shopping at antiquestores. They also enjoy eating at dif-ferent mom and pop restaurants whilethey are out. Recently they were at alocal eatery in Floresville when twoyoung ladies (Around 50 and 70) sat inthe booth next to them. Oscar could-n’t help but notice the two beauties.He kept looking at them and smiling,flirting with his eyes. After a few min-utes, he asked the older one “are you

married?” She smiled back and said“No, I am widowed”. After a moment,Oscar spoke up again, “You wannaget married” and he flashed a smile.The now blushing lady once againspoke, this time through a chuckleand said “no, not really, I am actuallywidowed twice ,but thank you any-way”. Oscar waited a few momentsthen jokingly said with a smile on hisface “I’d be honored if you let memake you a widow for the 3rd time!”The whole restaurant broke out in abig laugh…and Oscar being the won-derful gentleman that he is, giggled,smiled and went back to finishing hismeal. Needless to say, that afternoona good time was had by all!

I move my father about once a year, on average. I didn’t want to use the movers I used lasttime because, frankly, that move was a MESS. It took 2 full days to complete the move andmy poor dad was stressed for an entire week afterward. Based on a recommendation fromthe facility my dad was moving into, I called Generations. Look for these color-coded housing types on the map & pages of this magazine …

ACTIVE ADULT COMMUNITIES 55+ either age targeted or age restricted offer home ownership for adults 55+. These communities are maintenance free and offer a monthly associationfee. Many of these communities are single family homes, cottages, patio homes, condominiums andtownhomes. They offer a clubhouse with fitness center, pool, spa and other amenities.

SENIOR APARTMENTS offer all the amenities of regular apartment communities but have a min-imum age requirement, in some communities it is 55 years of age, in others it is 62. Many of theseapartments offer reduced rent for those that qualify, they are identified as “affordable” apartment communities. Both types of senior apartments offer many amenities such as pools, community rooms,and lots of activities. They do not offer meals.

INDEPENDENT LIVING WITH SERVICE COMMUNITIES offer older adult congregatehousing that is generally replete with many amenities and social activities and services. Someindependent living communities offer health care services, and can accommodate older residents withchronic health problems. Most communities offer restaurant-style meals, frequent events and countryclub style furnishings. They offer exercise rooms and planned activities, as well as resident clubs andinterest groups.

ASSISTED LIVING & RESIDENTIAL LIVING What are types and sizes?Type A: Resident must be physically and mentally capable of evacuating the facility unassisted. This may

include the mobile non-ambulatory persons such as those who are in wheelchairs or electriccarts and can transfer and evacuate themselves in an emergency. Does not require routineattendance during nighttime sleeping hours.

Type B: Resident may require staff assistance to evacuate and may be incapable of following directions under emergency conditions. May require attendance during nighttime sleeping hours. Residents may

not be permanently bedfast.Type C: Four-Bed facility which meets the minimum standards and program rules for enrollment with

DADS as an adult foster care facility. (Requires a contract with DADS.)

All residential care homes and assisted living facilities that provide services of a personal nature to more than three (3) residents, unrelated to the owner, must be licensed under the DADS licensurerequirements.

RESIDENTIAL CARE HOMES offer a home like setting usually in a single family home. They typically provide meals, laundry, house keeping, medication supervision, assistance with activities of dailyliving. Transportation may also be offered at some homes.

PERSONAL CARE HOMES this is a home in a residential care setting equipped to give adequate care to three residents.
