ABOUT SRBLSA “The function of education, therefore, is to

teach one to think intensively, and to

think critically. . . Intelligence plus

character--that is the goal of true

education.” ~Martin Luther King, Jr.

Greetings! In 1968, on the campus of New York University Law School, Algernon Johnson (“A.J.”) Cooper responded to the need for continued educational encouragement, professional development and community enrichment for Black law students. Mr. Cooper founded the National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA), a non-profit organization, which currently serves nearly 6,000 student members worldwide. For nearly 45 years, NBLSA has been a valuable resource in addressing the educational needs and goals of minority law students, while encouraging their professional advancement and fostering meaningful relationships with Black attorneys, and other legal professionals. With 46 chapters and more than 1,700 students, the Southern Region of the Black Law Students Association (SRBLSA) has been a leader in equipping students for a rewarding career as attorneys. This year, SRBLSA has used the theme "Pushing Progress Through The Pipeline." Under that theme, SRBLSA has been active in career preparedness and community outreach. We have committed to improving the well-being of those in our region by educating citizens of all ages and empowering them with the tools to play an active role in shaping their communities. We will end the year in Jacksonville, FL as we host our Annual Regional Convention February 12 - February 16, 2014 at the Hyatt Regency on the Jacksonville waterfront.

The convention will feature the Thurgood Marshall Mock Trial competition and the Frederick Douglass Moot Court competition as well as several panels and luncheons. More than 500 students will join us at the convention and we invite you to partner with us as we continue to Push Progress. Serving as a corporate sponsor is a great opportunity for you to become an active participant with SRBLSA. You will gain access to high caliber minority law students which will have a meaningful impact on your recruiting efforts. Moreover, sponsorship will highlight your commitment to diversity in the legal profession and encourage our members to pursue opportunities with your organization throughout their future legal careers. Our ultimate goal is to foster a long-lasting, mutually-beneficial relationship with you and your organization. Our Sponsor Guide includes some but not all of the benefits of becoming a featured SRBLSA Sponsor. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. We look forward to your sponsorship and support. Best regards,

Ruth L. Tisdale Wake Forest School of Law J.D., Class of 2014 Regional Chair

PROGRAMMING, ADVOCACY, AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT

The Southern Region of the National Black Law Students Association (SRBLSA) is the largest of NBLSA's six regions with 46 chapters in the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Throughout the year we have instituted many programs that our beneficial to our student’s development as future attorneys as well as to the broader community. Below are the

details of our regional programs.

Regional Convention | February 12 - February 16, 2014: Join us in Jacksonville, FL for SRBLSA’s Annual Regional Convention. Our convention is the most anticipated regional event of the year. A combination of discussion panels, workshops, and networking events ensure that law students, professionals and sponsors alike get the most out of the experience.

Regional Career Fair/Leadership Retreat | August 23-24, 2013 Our regional Career and Job Fair brought together more than 100 students across the region for a weekend of leadership and career development. Students enhanced their leadership skills and employers were able to interview some of the brightest legal minds in the South.

Academic Retreats: Targeted primarily at first year students, Academic Retreats are held in each of SRBLSA’s five sub-regions during the months of September and October. Members receive crucial academic support and tips on maximizing their law school experience.

Regional Law Journals: SRBLSA is one of the few regions that produces a Law Journal during the Spring. The Law Journal, titled “Southern Journal of Policy and Justice, is a student-run publication and an outlet for both talented law students and established professionals of all backgrounds to present their diverse perspectives on a range of relevant topics.

Community Service: SRBLSA understands the importance of giving back to the community. This

year, we have hosted a Community Service Weekend that motivated students to work within their

community. Additional community service projects this year include can food drives, Worlds AIDS

Day Commemoration, MLK Day of Service, and other empowerment activities.

Lobby Day: Each year, SRBLSA hosts its Lobby Day training workshop in conjunction with legislative career panel discussions. Throughout the day, distinguished guest speakers enlighten students about the importance of getting involved in the legislative process. This year, SRBLSA will host several Lobby Days during the month of January

Southeastern Minority Job Fair: This year, SRBLSA partnered with the Southeastern Minority Job Fair to provide programming for the more than 900 Job Fair participants. The programming for the job fair included mock interviews and resumes as well as panel discussions on succeeding in the legal field. SRBLSA also partnered with the National Black Prosecutor’s Job Fair to provide networking opportunities to the more than 50 Job Fair applicants.
