About the College

The college was started in the year 1993 with just

three Under Graduate (UG) programmes, namely, B.E.

Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE), B.E.

Electrical & Electronics (EEE) and B.E. Mechanical

Engineering (MECH). The very first batches of ECE and

MECH produced University Gold Medals. Since then, the

college has made several strides in achieving excellence

in promoting the technical education to the society in

the rural areas of Tamil Nadu. Today the college has

seven UG programmes and four Post Graduate (PG)

programmes in engineering and technology.

second volume of the newsletter! We invite the readers

to give their wealthier comments for the healthier

growth of the newsletter.

The Advisor’s Note

We, first, apologize to the readers for the delay in

the release of this issue. However, late is better than

never! The baby seems to have grown healthier than the

last year. Congrats! As a voracious reader myself, I

suggest, what about publishing the contributions from

About the Trust Board

Dr. V. Vasanthi Devi, the Chairperson of the board

was a two-time Vice-Chancellor of Manonmaniam

Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu and is a

well-known women activist of the century.

Thiru G. Ramakrishnan, I.A.S (Retired) was a

former State Information Commissioner of Tamil Nadu

(2006-2010).

Prof. Dr. R. B. Kumar is a former Director, School

of Management, Anna University, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Dr. A. Purushothaman is a former head of the

department of Marine Biology, Annamalai University,

Parangipettai, Tamil Nadu.

Smt. Kasturi Parthasarathy is the wife of the

founder Trustee, Late. Shri. Parthasarathy and has

been associated with the Trust since its inception.

Shri. M. D. Balaji, the Secretary-Trustee is the

illustrious son of the founder Chairman, Late

Shri. M. E. Devarajan and is a popular industrialist in

Chennai.

Commissioning of ON-GRID 100 kW Solar

Photovoltaic Power Plant

The SPV Power Plant Commissioning: The Chief Guest commissioning

the SPV power plant.

As an initiative towards “Green Campus Evolution”,

the ceremony of commissioning of two 50 kW Solar

Photovoltaic (SPV) systems in the campus was held on 22,

July 2014. Thiru. K. Veera Raghava Rao, I.A.S.,

District Collector, Tiruvallur presided over the function.

Women’s Day

The Women’s Day: Ms. B. S. Ajeetha, the Chief Guest of the

day, delivering the Women’s Day address. Along Side:

Dr. S. Deivanayaki, the Guest of Honour, Chairperson/SRET,

Principal/SREC, Principal/SRPT, Principal/SRCAS, Principal/

SRVMMHSS.

Women’s Day was celebrated in our College

auditorium. Ms. B. S. Ajeetha, M.L., Advocate, High

Court, Madras was the Chief Guest & given special address.

Dr. S. Deivanayaki, Joint director, Entrepreneurship

Development Institute, Govt. of Tamil Nadu was the Guest

of Honour. Dr. V. Vasanthi Devi, Chairperson of Sriram

Educational Trust presided over the function.

The 17th Graduation Day was celebrated on 22,

February 2014 at the college campus. Dr. V. Vasanthi

Devi, Chairperson, Sriram Educational Trust (SRET),

presided over the function and Dr. G. Nalankilli, Principal,

Sriram Engineering College, welcomed the gathering.

Dr. S. Sundaresh, M.Tech., D.Sc., Director

General, Defence Research & Development Organization

(DRDO), Ministry of Defence, Govt. of India, New Delhi,

was the Chief Guest. He delivered the Graduation Day

address and distributed the degree certificates and

medals to the Rank holders. Dr. C. Chandrasekar,

Additional Director, CVRDE, Avadi, was the guest of

honour.

21st College & Sports Day

The 21st College and Sports Day was celebrated on

29th March 2014. Shri. P. Ravichandran, Commandant,

Tamil Nadu Special Police-II Battalion, Avadi, Chennai

was the Chief Guest.

The 21st College & Sports Day: Chief Guest delivering the

College & Sports Day address. On the dais: Director, Physical

Education, Principal/SRPT, Principal/SREC, Professor/EEE,

Director (R & D)/SREC.

The first volume cum first issue of the college

newsletter, SREC NEWS was released by the Chief

Guest of the day. Dr. G. Nalankilli, Principal, SREC,

received the first copy.

Infrastructural Enhancements...

Internet Facility Upgrade

The internet facility was upgraded from 4 Mbps

(1:1) leased line wired connectivity to 10 Mbps (1:1)

leased line RF connectivity on 29, January 2014. The

Computer Center at the Hostels were also provided with

the 24-hr internet facility in order to help the students

to carry out their mini and major project works and to

learn beyond the curriculum.

Renewal of ISO Certification

The external ISO Certification Body, Integrated

Assessment Services (IAS) Pvt. Ltd. audited the

institution on 31, August 2014 to verify the conformity

of maintaining the ISO standards in the day-to-day

educational activities with the ISO 9001:2008 and

granted the Certification with renewal from the ISO

9001:2000 to the ISO 9001:2008 standards.

Developmental Activities...

Science & Technology Exhibition EXPO’14

Sriram Engineering College (SREC), Perumalpattu,

hosted a Two-day District-level Science & Technology

Exhibition EXPO’14 for the students of around 45

schools and polytechnic colleges in and around Chennai

on its campus recently.

Several innovative projects were exhibited at the

event by the students of various disciplines of SREC.

Around 4,500 students visited the exhibition. The event

was conducted with the aim of instilling scientific vigour

in the minds of the younger generation and nurturing an

aptitude for research, innovation and creativity.

ROTARACT Club Activities

PONGAL Celebration in Orphanage: On 11th

January, 2014, in Mother Theresa Orphanage, Avadi

I.A.F, Chennai, TN which has 30 boys and 6 girls, the

PONGAL festival was celebrated among the children of

age group 1-10. Gifts were distributed to the orphans.

The ROTARACT Club Activities: Blood Donation Camp:

Volunteers (students & staff) from SREC donating the blood

to save lives.

Three-day Camp: A three-day camp was organized

from 21st January, 2014 to 23rd January, 2014. On 21st

motivate the students.

Blood Donation Camp: Blood donation camp was

jointly organized with YRC in the College main Block on

22nd January, 2014. Dr. Tamil Mani and his team from

Royapet Govt. Hospital came over here to collect the

Blood. Two hundred and fifteen units of blood was

donated by the staff members and students of SREC.

Awareness Programme: School students’ Awareness

Programme was conducted at Dasars Higher Secondary

School on 23rd January, 2014. Mr. Sanjaya Kumar (member,

5th Pillar team) delivered the speech about Anti-corruption.

Youth Red Cross (YRC) Activities

The YRC Activities: Drug Awareness Programme: The Chief

Guest giving away the prizes to the winners of the Essay

Competition on ‘Drug Awareness’.

The Youth Red Cross (YRC) of SREC organized

various activities such as Tree Plantations, Blood Camps,

Orientation Programmes, AIDS Awareness Programmes

etc.

Mr. M. T. V. Prakash Reddy, Assistant Professor in

the Department of English, is the Programme Officer

and he has organized various Programmes as follows.

• YRC jointly with NIB CID (Narcotics Intelligence

Bureau), Tamil Nadu Police, Kancheepuram District,

organized ‘Drug Awareness Programme’ on 6th

March, 2014. The Chief Guest

Shri. K. Varatharajan (DSP) gave prizes to the

winners of Essay competition on ‘Drug Awareness’.

Apart from this, First Aid, Disaster Management

Awareness Programmes & Tree Plantation were

organized.

• YRC jointly with ROTARACT Club organized several

Blood Donation Camps in the college premises in the

month of January, 2014 in which 200 volunteers

donated blood to Tamil Nadu AIDS Control Society

and Blood Transfusion Council, Chennai.

Mr. M. T. V. Prakash Reddy, Programme Officer,

YRC, along with his volunteers participated in One-day

RRC Peer Educators Training Programme organized by

SKR Engineering College and co-sponsored by Anna

University, Chennai on 28th February, 2014.

National Service Scheme (NSS) Activities

The National Service Scheme (NSS) Club of SREC

also actively organized several events to instill the

social awareness in the young minds of the students as

listed below.

The NSS Activities: NSS Special Camp: Eye Screening Camp:

Students and staff members of SREC getting the screening

test.

• National Voters Day awareness pledge was taken by

staff members and students of SREC on 24th

January, 2014.

• Right to Information (RTI) Act Awareness

programme was conducted by the NSS Unit of SREC

on 25th February, 2014.

The NSS Activities: Sports Day for Mentally Challenged: Principal,

SREC inaugurating the Sports Day.

• NSS Special Camp programme was conducted from

17th February, 2014 to 25th February, 2014. During

this camp an Eye Screening Camp was organized on

17th & 18th February, 2014 by Vishnu Eye Hospital,

Chennai. In this camp, around 2000 students and 200

staff members got benefited.

• The premises of Lord Shiva Temple was cleaned by

the volunteers on 20th February, 2014.

• On 22nd February, 2014 the Sports Day was

conducted at District-level for the mentally

challenged students jointly with Anbalaya Self Help

Group.

The NSS Activities: The children being administered the Polio

drops by the volunteers at Veppampattu Railway Station during

the Polio Drops Programme.

Several value added courses on .NET, JAVA, and

PHOTOSHOP were conducted for the students by

NIIT and BIG AIMS.

Students Counselling

Two full-time counsellors, namely, Mrs. J. Rukmani

and Ms. J. M. Shalini are available round the clock to

provide guidance to the students to overcome their

mental stress or agony over any personal issues

prevailing in them preventing them from academically

excelling. They also provide guidance to the Faculty

members on the counselling aspects i.e., on how to

counsel a student whose personal issues affect his or

her academic performance. In this regard, they

recently conducted an Orientation Programme on

Mentoring and Counselling Skills.

The Guest Lectures: Resource Person, Dr. K. Annamalai, giving

lecture on the “Recent Trends in Automobile Engineering” to

the audience.

MoUs

Every department signs Memorandum of

Understandings (MoUs) with leading Industries and

Institutes for various interactions such as Guest

Compassion shown by a life with five senses worth emulation by

a human being with six senses: - A recent news in a Tamil Daily

states that a street dog tried hard to prevent the general

public from getting electrocuted from a rain water stagnation

which was being electrified from a broken live service wire near

the Central Railway Station, Chennai and sacrificed itself to

save a youngster who tried to step into the rain water

stagnation, ignoring the dog’s barking. The general public paid

an honourable funeral to the dog and the dog’s just-born cubs

were taken care of by the Blue Cross Society. God’s great!

Lectures, Seminars, In-Plant Trainings (IPTs),

Industrial Visits (IVs), Projects and Research in order

to provide opportunities to the students to obtain the

state-of-the-art knowledge in Engineering and

Technology. The Department of Chemical Engineering

signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Central

Leather Research Institute, Adyar, Chennai for

industrial visits and final year project assistances.

Every department takes immense effort to take

the students to the industries in order to provide them

an opportunity to understand the practical aspects of

the theoretical knowledge they acquire in the

In-Plant Trainings

At the end of every semester, during the semester

holidays, the students are encouraged to undergo in-

plant trainings in the leading industries nearby their

locality to yearn the practical knowledge in their

promotion ceremony to collect his promotion letter.

• ASHOK of first year of Automobile Engineering

secured gold medal and was selected in Anna

University Taekwando team to participate in All

India Inter University Taekwando Competition held

at Sathyabama University from 07th December, 2013

to 12th December, 2013.

• Ashok of first year of Automobile Engineering

secured Bronze medal in the 5th State Championship

held at Menon Indoor Stadium, Kozhikode from

06.01.2014 to 09.01.2014.

• Tamil Nadu Inter-Engineering College Sports 2014:

T. AUNACHALLAM of first year of Chemical

Engineering secured 4th place in high jump event

which was held at Kongunadu Engineering College,

Thottiam from 14th February, 2014 to 28th February,
