    SRIVAISHNAVISM

    From the Desk of Dr.Sadagopan.

    || Sri KulasekarA's Birthday , Iswara Samvathsaram ||

It gives me great pleasure to join on this sacred day of Sri Kulasekara AzhwAr's birth ( Maasi Punarvasu ) to pay my tribute to the great Saint-King from KeralA-Paandya desam . This is also the day in which Sri RanganAtha Swamy Temple foundation stone is being laid at Pomona , NY following the divine blessings of Sri Maha Lakshmi and the 44th Jeeeyar , His Holiness Sri Vedantha Desika MahA Desikan, the builder of the Southern Gopuram of Sri Ranganathan . May this effort thrive and May the object of Sri Kukasekara AzhwAr's deep desire come to reside here on the Banks of Hudson river in New York and bless us all for times to come.

A Tribute to Sri Kulasekhara *************************** Srimans MadhavakkaNNan and MuraLi Rangaswamy have paid wonderful tributes already this morning. I will follow from there and focus on the deep and profound statements of MahA Viswasam ofKulasekharA enshrined in his salutations and prayer to Sri VitthuvakkOttu AmmAn of MalayALa divya desam ( PerumAL Thirumozhi : 5th decad )

The Divya Desam of VitthuvakkOdu ********************************** The name VitthuvakkOdu comes from the joining of two words : VidhwAns + Kodu or koodiya Idam ( the place of assembly ).

Vedic Scholars , Experts in Kaavyam , Naatakam , Alankaara Saasthram , Tarkam , MeemAmsam and Yogam used to assemble here as residents and gave the name of VitthuvakkOdu to this thiruppathi . They were very respectful of each other and developed deep friendship (Mithra BhAvam). Hence , this Thiruppathi is also known as MitthirakkOdu , the place of assembly of friends .

    Location of VitthuvakkOdu **************************

  • 8

This Kshethram is at a distance of 10 miles from ShoranUr on the GuruvAyUr-ShoranUr road. It is on the bank of BharathappuZhA river and can be reached from PattAmbhi train station. The garbha graham is semi-circular similar to the traditional ones of KeraLa divya desams.

The method of worship is neither VaikAnasam or Paancha Raathram , but Taantric . There is no chatAri usage . Only Sandal Paste and Tulasi leaves are given as PrasAdam . Potti ( pOtthi ) Brahmins perform Abhigamanam with wet cloth and continue with the daily aarAdhanams devoutly as in the case of GuruvAyUr . There is a temple for the grandson of the Lord ( Lord SivA ) infront of this temple .

The ArchA Moorthys of VitthubvakkOdu **************************************

The Lord's name at this Thiruppathi is Uyya Vantha PerumAl. ThAyAr's name is Thiru VitthuvakkOttu Valli. The name for the Lord is intriguing. Instead of Uyya Vaikka Vantha PerumAL , He is called Uyya Vantha PerumAL or the Lord , who came to be redeemed . Perhaps, he acknowledges the moving SaraNAgathi paasurams of His dear BhakthA , who deservedly earned the suffix of PerumAL after his name of KulasekharA . Our predecessors have rightfully stated: " PerumALai aRiyAthAr PerumALai aRiyAthArE ". The meaning of this statement is: "One who does not understand the Paasurams of KulasekHara PerumAL would not know about PerumAL ( Sri RamachandrA ) , who performed AarAdhanam to Periya PerumAL , Sri RanganaathA , during His avathAram as the son of DasarathA . Perhaps Sriman NaarAyaNa who is Bhaktha Paaratantryan felt that he should take this name as one who came to be redeemed in the spirit of VaishNava Nampi of Thirukkurungudi , who came to attend KalakshEpams of Sri RaamAnuja on the banks of TamraparaNee river .

The Greatness of KulasEkharA ***************************** Our AzhwAr is considered as the amsam of the Kausthubham gem adorning the chest of Sriman NaarAyaNan . KulasekhaRA was a king of Kolli Naadu in those days , when there was the joint kingdom of Keralaa and Paandya desam . He was born under the star of Punarvasu , the same one under which Sri RamachandrA was born as KausalyA suprajA . Like Chakravarthi Thirumahan , he gave up his kingdom too for dhArmic reasons .He wanted toemulate Ilaya PerumAl and wanted to serve always the Lord ( Bhagavad Seshathvam ). Like BharathA , he wanted to have Paarathanthryam and wanted to perform PaadhukhA PattAbhishEkam . Like SatrugnA, KulasekharA stood for Bhagaavtha Seshathvam celebrated in the Thiruvaimozhi Paasurams of decad 3.7 summarized recently by Sri MadhavakkaNNan. SatrugnA is known as Nithya Satrugnan : The Forever foe of anything that stood in his way to serve BhagavathAls like Bharathan , his brother . In a similar spirit , KulasEkarA defended BhagavathALs in his court , when they were falsely accused of stealing the AabharaNams of his AarAdhana Moorthy . KulasekharA put his hand into a pot containing Cobras to attest to the purity of BhagavathALs and won . Such is the greatness of KulasekharA , who dreamed and sung daily about his pilgrimage to Srirangam so that he can be near to Sri RanganAthA .

Our PurushArtham is Bhagavadh Kaimkaryam. That is Mudal kOdu (the first step). The kadaisi kOdu (the last step) is CharamAvathi Bhagavatha Kaimkaryam of the kind celebrated by NammAzhwAr in Thiruvaimozhi 3.7.10:

"--adiyAr adiyAr tammadiyAr tamakku adiyAr adiyAr tammadiyAr adiyOngaLE "

(Meaning): " Myself and mine are servants to the servants of the servants of the servants of the servants of the servants of the servants of this lovable Lord "

He declared: " Inbamarum selvamum ivvarasum yaan vEndEn " and spent his days in Bhagavadh/Bhagavadha KAIMKARYAM . He followed the traditional SaraNAgathi maargam established by the Divya Dampathis and spent his last days at Srirangam and ascended to Parama padam from there.

In his VitthuvakkOttu paasurams , he expressed his understanding and practise of the profound meaning of PraNavam with particular emphasis on the letter " U" in the combination of the triad , A,U and M . The Letter "U " stands for AnanyArha Seshathvam asserting that the Jeevan is Seshan to the Lord and the Lord alone . AzhwAr's MahA Visvaasam andaathma SamarpaNam in the true spirit of SaraNAgathi is etched in these verses .

The ten passurams of AzhwAr are moving statements about his Aakinchanyam and MahA VisvAsam . Swami DEsikan captured the mood of the mind of KulasEkharA in his SaranAgathi Granthams like Nyaasa Dasakam ,

  • 9

SaraNAgathi Deepikai as well as in Daya Sathakam slOkams . The whole decad is a " VisvAsa PrArthanA pUrvam Aathma RakshA bharam " in the spirit of Swami Desikan's second slokam of Nyaasa Dasakam :

nyasyAmi Akinchana: Sriman anukUlOnyavarjitha: I visvAsa PrArthanA pUrvam Aathma RakshAbharam tvayi II

First Paasuram : Mother and Crying Child **************************************

Here he described his helpless state to that of an infant , which has been discarded by its mother in anger and disgust because of the screams and tantrums of the wimpering infant . The infant is totally helpless to take care of itself and awaits the mercy of the mother to releive its misery .Azhwar states that his condition is exactly like that infant . He says , "Unn SaraNallAl SaraNillai " . He states further that all of his accumulated samsaaric ills are causing him indescribable pain and they can not be eliminated by anyone except the Lord. He is screaming in anguish to get the Lord's attention and that the Lord like the mother ignoring the infant does not pay attention to him and move in his direction to help him . AzhwAr declares with conviction that inspite of the Lord's lack of initiative to help him , he will not seek help from anyone else .He says : " I will stay forever in the belief that your Lotus feet are my sole refuge and will hold on to them , even if you kick me away .I will wait for your anger to subside and meanwhile hold on to your sacred feet firmly until the dawn of Your DayA ".

Oh DayA mUrhty ! Oh my Lord ! There are a lot of bad sons ( evil PuthrAs : Kuputhra :) , but nobody ever heard of evil mothers (KumAthA). Even with a bad son , a mother shows affection and comes to his rescue. If ordinary mothers behave in this predictable fashion and are compassionate towards their ill-behaving sons , I can not see how Yourself , the jaganmAthA can ignore me ( Your son ) and my sufferings? Hence I am convinced that you will not abandon me .

The description of the Lord of VitthuvakkOdu as the Mother of the Universe by KulasEkharA reminds one of Swami Desikan's prayer to the Lord of ThiruvEnkatam in Daya sathakam :Maatha: DayE ! mE mana : tvAm prasAdhayithum icchathi " . He says : " Oh DayA dEvi! my mind wants to gladden Your heart . You are afterall my Mother. As Your dear child , I want to make You happy by presenting You with nourishing victuals to please You . I look around to see what I have gotin my collection to give You .I see that I have only one item in plenty in my possession (i-e., ) the bundles of my accumulated sins . I conclude that they will serve as food for You and perform prapatthi at Your sacred feet and offer my paapa raasis as the naivEdhyam . With mahA visvAsam in You and your power to wipe out my sorrows ( taru thuyaram tadAyEl unn saraNallAl saraNillai ) , I offer these bundles of sins to You as food. What do You do ? In one second , you swallow them and stand there famished suggesting that what I offered is not enough for You to appease Your hunger . Oh DayA svarUpi ! please take the role of my Mother and do not be angry at me and enfold me in Your hands in affectionate embrace and feed me the milk of Jn~anam and thus protect me . There is no one else for me as refuge. I wish tosurrender my soul at Your sacred feet . Such thoughts are echoed by Swami Desikan in the following DayA Sathaka SlOkam:

Outhsukhya pUrvamupahruthya mahAparAdhAn maatha: prasAdhayithum icchathi mE manastvAm I aalihyathAn niravasEshamalabhdha trupthi: tAmyasyahO Vruhshagireesa dhruthA DhayE tvAm II

    Second Paasuram :Pathivrathi& ill-behaving Consort ************************************************

Here , AzhwAr compares himself to " KondAnai allAl aRiyA kula mahaL " and concludes that " un kurai kazhalE kURuvanE " .

Oh VitthuvakkOttammA ! I am Your bonded servant . If You do not come to my rescue , others will laugh at You as a negligent Master. They will laugh at me as well and point out that I am the foolish girl , who puts too much belief in Your action to protect me and I am going to be surely disappointed . Whatever these people of the village say , I will have enduring visvAsam in Your public statement , " MaamEkam SaraNam vraja" and will wait for you to take the first step towards me. My state is similar to a Chaste woman , whose husband engages in despicable acts . Even if the neighbors laugh at her for her "stupidity " to be faithful to him , she will continue to wish for his KshEmam and will perform without let kaimkaryam to him . My status is similar to that pathivrathai . Even if you declare that You will not

  • 10

protect me , I will hold onto Your lotus feet adorned with the silampu denoting You as a mahA Veeran ; I will not let go off your protective feet . I want to remind you that Our relationship is not dissolvable .

Third Paasuram : Aggreived Citizen& Irresponsible King ****************************************************

In this paasuram , AzhwAr compares his state of Ananya SaraNAgathithvam by invoking the example of a negligent and derelict king , who does not come to the rescue of the suffering citizens. That king wears the scepter and crown for the express purpose of protecting his subjects. That is his kshathriya dharmam . Even when he fails to discharge his avowed duties , the people have no other recourse except to expect him to protect them . My status is similar to that. Even if You wont cast Your benovolent glances in my direction and take note of my suffering , I will stay at Your feet reminding You of Your dharmam as SaraNAgatha Rakshakan and will wait in my helpless state without seeking relief from anyone else . Like the fish in the ocean , Who know that they have no other place to go even if the waters of the Ocean dry up , Oh Lord of VitthuvakkOdu surrounded by the rich and wet fields of paddy , I will stay with mahA visvAsam in You as my protector. I will not look to powerless demi-Gods , who pretend to offer protection and finally reveal their helplessness . I will firmly place my faith in You and You alone as my protector and rest my case for Aathma RakshaNam at your sacrd feet .AzhwAr states here: " unn paRRallAl PaRRilEn " .

Fourth Paasuram : The ill patient and the Surgeon **********************************************

Here AzhwAr compares his relationship with the Lord as one between a sick patient needing help and the Doctor, who could cure the illnes with surgery . The patient has cancer and the surgeon has to perform an operation to cut the flesh and remove the cancerous growth. The patient is going to suffer immensely from the pain of surgery. Once the operation takes place and the patient is cured of his long sickness, he is utterly grateful to the surgeon for saving his life. AzhwAr says that his status is like the trusting patient , who casts the burden of protection to the mAyAvi surgeon , the Lord ,and bears with all the intermediate sufferings during the period of surgery . He says that he will comprehend the pain as activities on the part of the Lord to save him and will wait to be cured and offer his thankfulness later to the Lord for His mahOpakAram .He says that he will wait for the dayA of the Lord to perform the surgery and cure him of the fearsome cancer of SamsAram .

Fifth Paasuram : The tired albatros bird and the Ship ************************************************

In this paasuram , he describes his helpness with a soul-stirring cry : Where will I go ? What will I do ? He compares himself to a sea bird , which was sitting on the mighty tall mast of a ship in the middle of the ocean . The big bird thought it was strong enough and decided to leave the safety of the towering mast and discover the land to rest. It flew for hours and hours away from the ship in search of comforting land to rest. The bird did not sight the land and was mighty tired . It recognized how foolish it was to abandon the safety of the ship's mast and to venture forth on its own to cross the ocean . It returns chastised and sits on the mast to complete safely its journey to the other side of the ocean. AzhwAr compares his status to this bird , which cast safety to winds and was going to endanger its life . He says in this context: " Oh Lord who destroyed the royal elephant of Kamsa that came rushing to you in anger with blood-shot eyes ! Where can I go for refuge forgetting your strong pair of feet ? Is it possible to forget them and look for safety anywhere else ? Please tell me ." Yengu POyhEn ? Unn iNai adiyE adayallAl , yengu pOyhEn ? " .

As a vivEki , I have evaluated Your power and that of other Gods and comprehend very well that You alone have the power to bless me with the fruits of Moksham . I used to be like the restless sea bird , which left the safety of the mast and wandered here and there . I have now fully understood that Your sakthi and grace have no match in all the worlds . I am therefore desirous of performing nithya Kaimkaryam to You. I wish to place my AathmA at Your sacred feet . Swami Desikan echoed the thoughts of AzhwAr in an AshtabhujAshtaka Slokam this way :

sakthim saraNyAnthara sabdha bhAjAm sAram cha samthOlya palAntharANAm I tvadh dAsya hEtho: tvayi nirvisangam nyasthAthmaNAm nAtha Bibharshi Bhaaram II

Sixth Paasuram:The Lotus Flower & the Sun *****************************************

In this paasuram , AzhwAr compares his relationship to the Lord as similar to the one between the red lotus and the Suryan that makes it blossom in the morning . The lotus flower can only react to the rays of the Sun to blossom . If one brings a red hot ember and brings it close to the closed lotus flower , it wont respond . When the mighty Sun is there , the lotus does not seek the help of the puny warmth of the tiny flame from the red hot ember . Azhwar states in the context that he will not seek the help of chillarai daivams , when the Lord of VitthuvakkOdu is standing there fully eager as Visva paripAlanan and Jagath Rakshakan to come to his rescue . Swami Desikan echos the sentiment of KulasekharA in his dilaog with Lord VaradarAjA of Kanchipuram :

kim vaa kareesa mayi rakshaNeeyE dharmAdhi bAhya sahakAri gavashaNEna I nanvasthi visvaparipAlana jAgarUka: sankalpa yeva bhavathO nipuNa:sahAya: II

Seventh Paasuram: The Crops and the rain clouds *********************************************

AzhwAr compares himself to the crops (paimkoozhkaL), that wait pateiently for the nourishing rain-bearing clouds (maitthezhundha Maamuhil) . He says that he will longingly wait for the shower of grace of the Lord and think of him with great affection ( chittam miha unn paal vaippEn adiyEnE ) .

In a Daya sathaka slOkam , Swami Desikan evokes the mood of the crops , which are waiting to be nourished by the life-giving down pour of Daya Devi , who incorporates the auspicious kalyANa guNAs--Vaatsalyam , Souseelyam , Soulabhyam and aasrtitha rakshaNam -- of ThiruvenkatamudayAn . Daya Devi soaks the suffering people with her cool and nourishing showers in a timely manner and protects the bhakthAs as visualized by Swami Desikan:

sAram labdhvA kamapi mahatha: SrinivAsAmbhurAsE : kAlE kAlE ghana rasavathee KaaLikEvAnukampE I vyakthOnmEshA mrugapathi girou visvamApyAyanthee seelOpagyam ksharathi bhavathee seethaLam sadhguNaougam II

SrinivAsa AmbhurAsi (the vast Ocean named SrinivAsA) is the source of the power of the life-giving down pour of rains originating from the dark Cloud of DayA Devi that cool the world (visvam aapyAyanthee) and creates the invigorating seasonal floods made up of the streams of the auspicious attributes of the Lord of seven hills (kaalE kaalE seela upagyam, seethaLam sadh guNa Ogam ksharathi). VitthuvakkOttu AmmAn is the same as " SrinivAsa dayAmbhOdhi pareevAha ParamparA ".

Eighth Paasuram : Flow of the river of Daya *****************************************

Fascinated by the thought of the cool rains joining together into small streams and then becoming a mighty river that vends its way to the vast ocean , AzhwAr revels over the thought of the auspicious guNAs of the Lord rescuing him from the heat of SamsAram . He says : "VitthuvakkOttammA ! unn pukkilangu seer allAl pukkhilan kANN" . The waters that descended from the rainy season clouds fall on the hill , form tributaries , blend together down stream and head towards the Ocean , the very source of that rain carried by the clouds . Whichever turn and twist the rivers take, they end up finally in the ocean and nowhere else . AzhwAr points out that a similar situation exists for him . Like the flowing rivers heading to the source , the Sea , Azhwar says that the KalyANa guNAs of the Lord flow in His mind and end up travelling to the Lord without any distraction or deviation .

The seventh and the eighth paasurams realte to the subject of the nourishing rain ( The Lord's DayA )that reaches us thru AchAryAs . AchAryAs in their infinite compassion for us absorb the essence of BhagavAn's dayA ( Saaram LabdhvA ). EmperumAn is the vast assembly of water (Ocean ) ; NammAzhwAr is the cloud , which drank deep and held the water of DayA from that ocean. He showered those waters on the mountain known as Naatha Muni and generated the bhakthi pareevAham (floods of Bhakthi). Those floods broke up into two streams named uyyakkondAr and MaNakkAl nampi. Those two streams merged with the river named ALavanthAr. That river entered the lotus pond known as RaamAnujA. The waters of that never-drying pond flow into the fields and nourish them to maintain life . Sri Rama DesikAchAr visualizes the tradition nurtured by NammAzhwAr , KulasEkharar and through them to the present

  • 12

day AchAryAs , when he comments on the meaning of " Saaram LabdhvA ". This is the same" SrinivAsa DayAmbhodhi pareevAha paramparA " that KulasEkharA invoked both at VitthuvakkOdu and on top of the seven hills.

Ninth Paasuram : Abject surrender at the Lord's sacred feet *******************************************************

Here AzhwAr declares that He will continue to think of the Lord ceaselessly , even if the Lord in His sport as MaayAvi discards him . He says : Oh Lord adorning the Sudarsanam shining like a bolt of lightning in Your hand! Through Your MayA , I will ask for the strength to discard the temptations of material wealth and seek You instead as my permanent wealth . Some times Your MayA will tempt me to think about perishable wealth . I am determined with Your grace to escape that temptation and seek You and You alone as the central goal and purpose of my life ".

In eight of his Paasurams on the Lord of this divya Desam , AzhwAr addresses the Lord as "AmmA , VitthuvakkOttu AmmA " . The reason perhaps is that he visualized the incomparable karuNA ( DayA ) of the Lord as a piraatti named DayA Devi . He stood at the feet of the Daya Devi of "Uyya Vantha PerumAL " of VitthuvakkOdu and inspired later Swami Desikan to invoke the blessings of the DayA Devi of the Lord of Seven Hills . One can hear the resounding echos of Swami Desikan's appeals to the Daya Devi of Lord SrinivAsA in the following passages of the magnificient prayers housed in DayA Sathakam :

    ** svayam na: nijAbhiprEtham pradhiSasi

** jagat dhrushtyA hithamithi klupthai: akluptha palAntharai: amathi vihithai: yadhrucchayA dharmAyithai: anyaisccha

** tvayA yeva tvayi nyastha svarakshaNa bharam maam tvAm nAthE nivEsaya

These statements of Swami Desikan tie in with the ananyArha SaraNAgathi ( NinnayE taan vEndi ) of KulasEkharA in his VithuvakkOdu Paasurams .

The essence of AzhwAr's upadEsam is that those who understand the linitless power of the DayA of the Lord and perform Prapatthi to Him with MahA VisvAsam in Him as the one and only protector will not fall into Narakam , but will end up in Sri Vaikuntam as a result of MokshAnugraham granted by the Lord .

    Tenth Pala Sruthi Paasuram **************************

Here , the AzhwAr reminds once again the Lord of VitthuvakkOdu that he will cling to His sacred feet even if He (the Lord) tries to extricate Himself from his hold (nee vEndAyEyAdinum maRRArum paRRilEn). He tells us that those , who recite these ten verses dealing with his SaraNAgathi to the Lord at this divya desam will never ever land in narakam ( NaRRamizh patthum vallAR naNNAr narakamE ) .

May we travel in the path laid out for us clearly by KulasEkhara AzhwAr and the AchAryAsthat followed him ! namO nArAyaNA !

    DHARMA STHOTHRAM

    Part 211.

Prithuh,Hiranyagarbhah During worshiping in temple sannadhis it is observed that many does Namasankeerthanam or meditation just by closing their eyes. It is desirable always if this practice is not followed, and to pray before Sriman Narayana with both eyes open and enjoy the sarva mangala swaroopis blessing nature. Sriman Narayana is having most beautiful lotus feet shining like a heap of sapphires looking as bright as an infinite number of suns kodi surya prakasar . His soft toes with glittering nails are adorned with gold ornaments studded with gems. His knee and thigh are shining like heaps of blue gems through His yellow robe. His four long arms chathur buja rupam is much graceful. His holding chanka and chakra in upper hands and lotus and gathai club in lower hands is much pleasing one. All the four arms are adorned with armlets and many beautiful ornaments. In the broad chest supremely beautiful Sri maha Lakshmi is seated and ever blesses all in Her karunya kripa. His neck possessed of the colour of blue lotus, with kausthabha diamond and many varieties of garlands and necklace studded with gems is much attractive one.The smell from flowers, Tulasi and vaijayanthi garlands is sure to make ones mind in peaceful atmosphere. His graceful chin, red lips sevvithazh, aquiline nose, with pearl hanging from it, crocodile shaped ear drops in ears, tilak or Thirunamam with Srichurnam in the forehead is ever enjoyable one. Above all, Kreetam crown studded with pearls and precious stones in head, enchanting face putting the full moon into shame and much more can be said. Hence devotees may chant divine namas with

open eyes and feel happy with darsan from pathathikesam. Now on Dharma Sthothram. In 410th nama Prithuh it is meant as The expanded and All pervasive. .Sriman Narayana has expanded Himself in the world. HE is said to be in great reputation and He is the centre of all auspicious fame in the universe. Andal in Thiruppavai 3rd pasuram starts as OOngi ulagalantha uthaman indicating the expansion of Him to measure 3 steps in vamana Avatharam. This is repeated in 24th pasuram Andru ivvulagam alanthaai adi potri. Periazhwar in his Thirumozhi, 1.2.7 vayul vaiyagam unda says Yasoda wondered on seeing the entire world ,when Sri Krishna opens His mouth. Everybody wondered such expansion is not possible to any person in this earth .Poigai Azhwar in Mudal Thiruvanthathi as pey alavu kanda peruman . Azhwar says in this as His one step is in full portion of the earth. Another step is is expanded in all sea areas around the world. As a small child Sri Krishna killed Boothanai when she was about to give poison from the breast milk. Nobody in the earth have such a capacity even to see the expansion of Him to measure the world. Sri Krishna gives Arjuna the power to see anything in the world, past, present and the future. No one can see the entire universe while sitting in one place ,but the devotee like Arjuna can see everything that exists in any part of the universe. In Gita 11.10, Aneka Atdpuda darsanam , Arjuna saw Him in the universal form with unlimited mouths ,unlimited eyes, unlimited wonderful visions. This form was decorated with many celestial ornaments and with upraised weapons. He wore celestial garlands and garments and many divine scents were smeared in HIs body . Anantha visvatomukhan Arjuna could see in the universal form of the lord ,in the unlimited expansion of the universe situated in one place ,although divided into many many thousands. He is one who is born as the king Prithuh, for bringing prosperity to the country, is Sriman Narayana. His viswaroopam is thus indicated in this nama prithu. iN 411th nama Hiranyagarbhah it is meant as He who is ever shined in the hearts of all treasured more than a gold, even those after time of manifestation. He is the expression of the creative urge . He is with the entire creative power. In the Upanishads it is said as Sriman Narayana or Brahman is the ground of all things. He is a conscious principle. He is one without a second. All the gods are subordinated to Him. He has transcendental nature which baffles all human thought. He has marvellous qualities which lie beyond human imagination. He is depicted as having human perfections which endear the suffering humanity to Him. He creates the world and remains as its inner controller . Hence He is called as Hiranyagarbha. Hiranyam is gold Garbah is one who possess with Him. The greatest of the Devas ,is Hiranya garbha who has infinite powers . He was the first being created by God. Even though a created being Hiranya garbha has almost God like powers. He is cosmic intelligence. By Sriman narayanas will Hiranyagarbha created this world. Hiranya garbha is the first manifestation of God. Therefore he deserves the adoration of all. All other Devas and Devis exist in Hiranyagarbha, because Hiranyagarbha is infinite and comprises the entire world. Adoration of any one of them is like adoring Hiranyagarbha himself. Thus this nama Hiranyagarbha is again shows the excellence of Sriman Narayana.

    Lord Ranganathar - Sri Rangam

  • 44

In this pasuram Piratti teaches us about the proper way to worship Perumal.

We have come to you after abandoning thoughts about I and mine. We have come to you like

Vibhishana who came to you after completely abandoning Lanka. Even if you hadnt accepted

Him, Vibhishana would have never returned to lanka. He never wanted the kingdow of Lanka

but you forced him to accept it.

Piratti says that the girls have gathered at Perumals door step like a king who has abandoned

his property. This is because it is very difficult for a rich man to give up on his property than it is

  • 45

for a poor man. Once, a man asked Parasara Bhattar why Lord Brahma who is always involved

in bakthi Yogam does not reach Sri Vaikuntham before a Sri Vaishnavite. Bhattar replied that

Lord Brahma being the foremost among all the jeevatmas is responsible for all the worlds.

Because of his elevated position it is difficult for him to give up on all of his privileges and

properties in order to approach the Lord whereas a Sri Vaishnavite has very little to give up

compared to Lord Brahma. Kings have proprietorship over beautiful lands and it is difficult for

them to lose ego that they own such beautiful lands. Hence it is very great if a king abandons

his ego completely. Therefore Piratti compares the girls to a king who has abandoned his ego.

Duryodana and Arjuna approached Lord Krishna to seek His help in the upcoming war. Lord

Krishna knew that they would be arriving. He removed every single chair from His bed chamber

all except one throne placed behind His head board and a small foot stool place near His foot

board. He instructed His guards to allow anyone inside His chamber while He was sleeping. He

then pretended to sleep and Duryodana arrived first. As Duryodana entered the chamber He

pitied himself for having to seek the help of a Yadava like Lord Krishna. Feeling arrogant that he

was superior to the Lord, Duryodana occupied the throne behind the Lords head board. Very

soon Arjuna entered. Arjuna did not notice Duryodana but as soon as he entered he saw the

Lords beautiful feet and therefore stood humbly near the Lords footboard. The Lord after

making sure that Arjuna has arrived opened His eyes and as His eyes first fell on Arjuna, He

welcomed him. Duryodana immediately objected stating that he had arrived before Arjuna. Lord

Krishna replied that as He had first seen Arjuna, He would first offer the choice to Arjuna. The

Lord asked Arjuna to choose between Lord Krishnas strong military consisting of 9 crore units

on one side and Lord Krishna Himself who will not fight in the war on the other side. To

Duryodanas delight, Arjuna chose the Lord over His military units.

Lord Krishna asked Arjuna why he had chosen the Lord knowing very well that He wouldnt

wield any weapons during the war. Arjuna stated that he wished to be praised as a great

  • 46

warrior. If Lord Krishna fought in the war, all the poets would only praise the Lord but if the Lord

stayed by Arjuna, Arjuna would be able to be victorious in the war due to the grace of Krishna

as well as gain praise for being a victorious warrior. Thus Arjuna asked Lord Krishna to be his

charioteer so that he can always be near Krishna. Lord Krishna accepted the position happily

and since Arjuna had sought the Lords help with humility after abandoning ego the Lord took

care of every single task including grooming the horses and feeding them which were not

usually performed by a charioteer. This incident is indicated by the Azhwar pasuram kuda disai

mudi vaithu. It is best to stand near the Lords feet (to the east) than to stand near the Lords

    thirumudi.

    Thondaradipodi Azhwar's Thirumaalai Pasuram

  • 47

Piratti then asked Perumal to open His eyes in gradual steps to look at the girls. Please look at

us with your eye lids lined with a beautiful red line which reflect your love for us.

Look at us like both the Sun and the Moon. Look at our sins with scorching heat of Sun to

destroy our sins while casting cool moon like glances on us

This is similar to a stain remover used to remove stains without harming the fabric.

Slowly open your eyes and look into our eyes!

A match between a groom & bride is approved only if there is a sparkle in their eyes when they

look at each other. This is indicated in this pasuram since the girls wish to marry Perumal.

After wedding the Sesha Homam is performed before sun Rise while manthram is chanted and

the bride and groom are asked to look into each others eyes while stating that, I saw you with

my minds eye and know that you are of good character. I will fulfill your wishes.

The Sesha Homam is performed in the early morning hours since at night when we sleep we

are united with Perumal as according to the Upanishads we sleep on the mattress called

Perumal. Since in the early morning we come from Him we tend to be of good character. This is

applicable only for the night time sleep as prescribed by shastras and not applicable for

afternoon naps. The ladies mentioned to Perumal, please free us from all sapam.

Sapam is the sin which must be experienced while papam is the sins which need not be

experienced. Perumal has only made a promise to destroy papams therefore the girls

intelligently ask Him to destroy their sapam as if sapam is destroyed papams are also destroyed

    automatically.

How should I destroy your sapam? Should I use my sweat, Pirattis kataksham, foot dust or by

making you take a dip in a sacred water body? Please use all the means listed by you on us!

  • 48

Perumal removed the sapam of Lord Siva with His sweat. Lord Siva was affected by

Brahmahathi dosham after cutting off the fifth head of Lord Brahma. Lord Siva was cursed by

Brahma to wander with the skull stuck to his palm seeking alms in the skull. Lord Brahma said

that the skull would fall off his palms only when the bikshai received overflows the skull. Lord

Siva asked his wife Annapoorani to fill the skull and even she wasnt able to overflow the skull

with her bikshai. After wandering here and there, Lord Siva went to Badrikashramam where

Perumal was meditating. As soon as he asked Perumal to help him, Perumal scratched His

chest with His nails and used His blood and sweat to fill the skull. As soon as Perumals blood

and sweat was offered in the skull the skull reduced in size and fell off of Lord Sivas hand.

Durvasar cursed Devendran that he would lose his wealth. To help Devendran, Perumal

churned the milky ocean and Piratti came out of it. As soon as she occupied Perumals

vakshasthalam she glanced at Devendran and he immediately regained his lost wealth.

Ahalya was cursed by Sage Gautamar because she wasnt loyal to her husband Sage

Gautamar. Her curse was relieved when Perumal touched her with His feet. We too like Ahalya

go against our husband. The husband of all is Perumal and we cheat Him when we use the

sense organs provided by Him to enjoy other things.

Daksha Prajapathi offered his 33 daughters in marriage to Moon. There are only 27 stars but

Kritikka is subdivided into 5 stars and Visaka into 2 thus getting 33 daughters. As Rohini was

the most beautiful amongst them, Moon spent all of his time in her company. The other

daughters complained to Daksha Prajapathi, Dakshan warned moon to treat everyone equally.

As Moon failed to treat hi wives equally Dakshan cursed Moon and Moon started to wane. Moon

then went to seek Lord Sivas help as lord Siva too had been mistreated by his father in law

Dakshan. Lord Siva placed moon in his locks near Ganges and thus saved one phase of the

moon. As moon wanted to regain his form completely, he was asked to go to Sri Rangam to ask

  • 49

the help of Ranganathan. As soon as Moon sought lord Ranganathans help, Perumal asked

moon to take a dip in the pushkarini. As soon as Moon took a dip, he regained his form. Thus

the pushkarini is named as Chandra Pushkarini. Perumal then created a duplicate moon that

had to wax and wane while the real Moon retained his form.

    Alternate Meaning:

Great Vidwans fall at the feet of sadacharyan when their ego is defeated by the knowledge of

sadacharyan. Even if sadacharyan looks at us with only half open eyes, it is enough to bless us.

Sadacharyan should instruct us in small steps so that we can assimilate the knowledge. They

look at us with moon like eyes during Bagawad Vishaya kalakshepam which is enjoyable and

with Sun like eyes during Sri Bashyam kalakshepam as reading even 1 pankthi of Sri Bashyam

    is guaranteed to destroy sapam.

    SRIVAISHNAVISM

Inspite of Narasimha Jayanthi , I am writing this article about Three Narasimhas of Srirangam .

Lord Narasimha and Narsimha Jayanthi : Narasimha Jayanti celebrates the incarnation of Lord Vishnu in the form of Narasimha (half man half lion) to save Prahlad from

demon Hiranyakasipu. Narasimha is the fourth of the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu. Narasimha avatar is the said to be the avatar

made by Lord Vishnu to answer the prayers of his staunch devotee prahalada .

According to Puranas, Lord Vishnu appeared as Narasimha on the Chaturdashi day in the month of Vaishakh to destroy the

Demon Hiranyakasipu who had obtained a boon from Brahma that he could not be killed by man or beast, by day or by night

and from inside or outside. And also he could not be killed by any weapon.

After receiving such a powerful boon, Hiranyakasipu conquered heaven and earth and declared himself as God and asked

people to worship him and not Vishnu.

But Hiranyakasipus son, Prahlda, was a staunch Vishnu devotee and disobeyed his father. The whole kingdom worshipped

Hiranyakasipu; but in his own house his son worshipped Vishnu. Father tried all means to change his son even he tried to kill

    him, but he failed miserably

Fed up with his son, one day Hiranyakasipu challenged Prahlada and, looking to a stone pillar, asked, If your god is

omnipresent, is he in this pillar also? Prahlad answered, HE is present in the pillar and even in the rust. Hearing this

Hiranyakasipu slashed hard on the pillar with a sword.

Suddenly, Lord Vishnu emerged from the pillar in the form of a Narasimha and slew the demon at dusk. Narasimha killed the

demon by keeping him in his lap and tearing his heart with bare hands thus overcoming all the boons the demon had attained

    from Brahma.

These stories are very well know to all, The below are the unique storeis and information about three Narasimhas in srirangam.

Kaatu Azhagiasingaar, Mettu Azhaghiasingar, Attru AzagiyaSingar Temples in Srirangam.

    1) Kaattu Azhagiya Singar Srirangam

    The Story

Located 200 yards east of the Srirangam Railway Station is the Kaattu Azhagiya Singa Perumal temple in Srirangam. This

temple dates back to a period prior to the Srirangam Ranganatha temple when this Kshetram was referred to as Velli

Thirumutham. Only much later, after the construction of the Ranganatha temple, this place came to be called Thiruvarangam.

Lord Narasimha is seen in a seated posture facing the West (towards Srirangam Ranganatha temple) with Lakshmi to his left.

This Kshetram was a forest thousands of years ago, surrounded by the two rivers- Cauvery in the South and Coloroon in the

North, and inhabited only by the rishis and their families. Time and again, wild animals would attack the families of the rishis and

    consume them for a meal.

  • 66

While the rishis had the power to burn the animals just by their looks, they would not forego the fruits of their penance by killing

these wild animals. Instead they undertook a more severe form of penance invoking the blessings of Lord Narasimha.

Pleased with their prayers, Lord Narasimha appeared here providing darshan to these rishis. As per their request, he stayed

here with Goddess Lakshmi protecting the lives of all those who offer their sincere prayers at this place.

The idol of Lakshmi Narasimha here is a Svayambu moorthy and the temple was built and renovated at later periods of time. No

inscriptions are found relating to the period of construction of the outer walls.

Old time residents say that this place was very much like a forest till the early 1970s. It is only in the last 3 decades that there

has been development around the Kaatazhagiya Singar temple.

    The Name

As the Lord appeared here in the middle of a forest and stayed back to protect the devotees, he came to be called Kaattu

    AzhagiyaSingar.

    SrirangamNamperumalsvisittoKaattazhagiyaSingartemple

Once a year, on the evening of Vijayadasami day, Namperumal, the Utsava deity of Lord Ranganatha of Srirangam, comes on a

street procession to this temple in a palanquin. Goddess is believed to have undertaken penance at this place and handed Nam

Perumal a bow and an arrow at the end of the 10th day of the Navarathri festival.

After Thirumanjam, the event of Lord Namperumal on a Horse Vaahanam, striking an arrow on the Vanni tree to signify the

destruction of evil forces and protection of the devotees, is enacted every year on the Vijayadasami evening at this temple.

    2) Mettu Azhaghiasingar :

The temple is located near to the Thayar Sanadhi of Srirangam Renganatha temple, just behind the Kambar mandapam. In this

mandapam, Kambar explained for the first time, his great work "Kamba Ramayanam" and in that "Iranya Vadhai Padalam" is

also included in that. (Iranyavadhan is the story about the killing of Iranyan by Lord Narasimha). But on hearing the inclusion of

it, all the people around the Mandapam protested against it. At that time, a voice that belong to Lord Narasimha arised and it

said there should be no Prostestation on that and he accepted the inclusion of it. It is also one of the said story here The Kamba

Ramayana was recited by Kambar for the first time in front of the thayar sannidhi. It contained refrences to Prahalda varada and

Slaying of Hiranyakashabu by Lord Nrishimha, Many learned scholars opposed to this as orignal Valmiki Ramayana did not

contain any references to this part. Then with the approval of Mettu Azhagiyasingar sannidhi situated on the 5th prakara kambar

    read the ramayana throught

One need to climb 10 to 15 steps to see this holy Mettu Azhaghiasingar, the exquisite eight armed deity with a smiling face

Hiranyakasipu on His lap and Bhakta Prahlada beneath.

    3) Attru Azhagiya Singar.

Sri Lakshmi Narasinga Perumal Thirukkoil, Odathurai, East Chinthamani,

Trichy.(Many people does not know much about this temple (I belive)).

Very near the abode of Kaattu Azhagiyasingar and Meetu Azaghiyasingar in

  • 67

Srirangam, Sri Nrisimhaswamy has chosen to reside on the southern banks of

    Cauvery as Athu Azagiyasingar.

The temple is situated on the road that leads to the Bye Pass Road from Chintamani,

    Trichy.

    The Story:

Supposed to be originally from a village named ChozhamAdevi near Thiruverambur,

Sri Lakshmi Narisingha Perumal decided to reside at the current place, through

dream to an ardent devotee. Situated at the Cauvery Odathurai, this was the

gateway to Srirangam hundreds of years ago, when the current road bridge was not

present. Sri Lakshmi Nrisingha Swamy decided to reside here and bless the

    devotees.

    Unique Narasimhar:

Sri Lakshmi Narasingha Perumal faces East, with Sri Lakshmi on his left lap. It`svery rare to

see Sri Lakshmi with Anjali Hastham facing Perumal in the South

    direction.

The Divine Couple are seated under the shade of a tall five hooded Adiseshan. Thayar is on

His lap. She is seated daintily and Her body and face are turned towards Him, partially. She

has Her hands together in the namaste posture. This not usual. Sri Lakshmi usually has one

hand in the abhaya and the other in the varada mudhra. In some places She has a lotus in

one of Her hands. Here She sits with Her head slightly bent, hands folded together in a pose

of supplication. That is why this is venduthal sthalam a wish granting place.

Stories of sages There was once a sage who had certain specifications in mind, when it came to who he would marry. As a result, he was unable to find a suitable spouse. But he did not give up, hoping that things would work out. Once, as he travelled through a forest, he saw many pious men, hanging upside down. He wondered why they were subject to such torture, and they replied that their descendant was not married. Unless he married and had progeny, the debt to his ancestors could not be fulfilled, and as long as that was not fulfilled, they would have to suffer such agony. The man they had in mind was none other than the sage who had laid down a stringent condition for his marriage. Realising his folly, the sage set out to fulfil his obligation to his ancestors, said M.V. Anantapadmanabhachariar.

There was another sage, whose story shows how easy it is to fall prey to one's senses. This sage married a woman and had his head on her lap. One day, he suddenly jumped up and said he had forgotten to observe his evening rituals. Thereupon his wife replied that he had not forgotten only that evening, but he had forgotten his evening rituals for the last several years. The two of them had been married for many years, and all those years, the sage had had no thought of anything else but his wife!

Another sage, who had done penance under water for many years, decided that he too should have a family of his own. He approached a king and asked him to give him one of his

daughters in marriage. The king said he would, if any of his daughters chose to marry the sage. The sage, using his powers, appeared as a young man before them, and all of them chose him as their husband! The king reluctantly agreed to give his daughters in marriage to the sage. The sage housed the fifty princesses in separate mansions and kept each of them happy. Thus even a sage who had subjected himself to severe hardships could not resist worldly temptations.

But sages would correct themselves and make amends for their conduct. The lesson for us is that since even sages can be tempted, and can fall prey to temptation, we should be very careful in controlling our senses.
