|| Homam, Havis, Yajna and Yaga ||

Sri Rangaswamy posted a very informative article on Sudarsana Homam. Homam,Havis, Yajana and Yaga are closely related terms dealing with a Sacrificial /sacred act with offering to Gods through the medium of Fire(Agni). I will comment for the record on their individual connatations and provide additional details on these terms and their Vedic Significance.

YAJNA in the broadest sense has been defined as a sacrificial rite or spiritual offering made generally in fire.

Grahasthas are expected to observe the following daily Yajnas:

1.Bhootha Yajna, an oblation or offering to all of the created beings with whom we share this earth.

2. Pitru Yajna: Obesquial offerings in the form of libations of water to the decesed ancestors.

3.Deva Yajna: Sacrifice to Sudarsana , Lakshmi Narasimha, and others through oblations offered in fire with Veda Mantras or Bijaksharams. This is commonly called HOMA.

4.Manushya Yajna: Athiti Satkaaram or hospitality to guests or strangers , who visit one.

5.Brahma Yajna: Teaching and recitation of the Vedas

In Bhagavd Gita, Bhagavan declares that He is of the Japa Yajna among the various Yajnas. Here reference is to the Mantra Japam of one's Ishta Daiwatam or Upasana Murthy or the Sacred Ashtaakshara Maha mantram.

YAGA is generally associated with elaborate performance of fire sacrifices on a large scale ( Vaajabheyam, Poundarikam, Aswamedham et al ) >Special priests with expertise in Vedic Injunctions(Vidhis) such as Advharyu (officiating priest), Hotr(for Rg Vedic Recitation), Udgaata(Sama Vedic passage reciter ) and Brahman (Presiding priest , often employed at a Soma Yaga) are involved in the successful conductance of these Yagas. The Number of priests can go as high as 16 in complicated sacrifices(Yagas).

HOMAM is generally a small scale "Yaga" and is performed at home as opposed to Yagas , which take place in a public place with attendance of a large group of people. Some times the scriptural passages are recited in the format of a Homam .Examples of such Homams are the Purusha Sukta Homam and Bhagavat Gita Homam. Agni is involved and sacrificial offerings are made to propitiate Gods or the Sacred passages associated with the Vedas or Bhagavan.

HAVIS is the term used for the oblations offeed to the God, which are tossed with reverence into the Fire. Havis generally is an oblation of burnt offering. It can be clarified butter also. Agni is the medium , which carries the Havis to the different Gods. Havyapaaka: is the oblation coked with butter and milk.

Purvamimamsa Sutras of Jaimini go into great detail about the various aspects(the vessels to be used, the different priests, et al ) of the Yagas .

The Vishnu Sahasra Namas (971-982) deal with the Yajna swaroopam of Sriman Narayana.The Naamas and the meanings as intrepreted by Parasara Bhattar and translated by Professor Srinivasaraghavan are as follows:

971: Om Yajnaaya Nama: He is Himself the sacrifice (Japa-Yajna) for those who wish to attain Him , But who do not have the where with all to acquire the Dharma to worship Him.

972: Yajna Pathi: He gives the fruit of the sacrifice done to please Him.

973: Yajvaa-- He who performs the sacrifice for those , who are unable to do a Yajna.In the Vaishnava Dharma in the Aswamedha parva , Lord Krishna says: " o Yudishtra, for the purification of those ( who are unable to observe the daily rites ), I am myself doing the Yajna at both dawn and dusk every day. I never fail in carrying out this vow of Mine."

974: Yajnaangah: He who has the sacrifices of others as an accessory to what He is doing.

975: Yajna-Vahana : He helps those ,who perform the sacrifices by investing them with the necessary power , faith and equipment to perform them.

976: Yajna Bhrt : He, who brings about the completion of the sacrifice.

977: Yajna krit: He,who created the sacrifice.

978: Yajnee: He for whose sake the sacrifices are done.

979: Yajna bhuk: The enjoyer or the protector of the sacrifice.

980: Yajna saadhana: He who is an accessory to the sacrifice.

981 : Yajnaanta krt : He who produces the fruits of the sacrifice.

982: Yajna guhyam: He, who is the secret of the sacrifice.

The Namaa "Yajna Guhyam" is very elaborately commented upon by Parasara Bhattar this way: " Though Bhagavan is not in wants, He accepts the offerings made in a sacrifice as though He has been long expecting them and enjoys them. Thus, He feels satisfied and also satisfies those,who do sacrifices. This is understood only by the wise , who know the injunctions ,the means and the fruit of sacrifices ,but not by those who have only a superficial knowledge. Hence the name of HIM as the Secret of the Sacrifice."

"All the Vedas and all that has to be learnt , all the Sastras and all sacrifices ,and all worship--All are Sri Krishna. O Kings! Those, who know Krishna correctly in this way ,may be considered to have completed successfully all sacrifices."

"All the shining luminaries in the world ,the three worlds and three guardians of the Worlds ,the three fires and the five offerings in them and all the Gods--All are Sri Krishna ,the son of Devaki."

Yajna Varaha Murthy and Srimad Bhagavatham *******************************************The relation between Bhagavan and the Yajnas is described by Srimad Bhagavatham.

The third Canto of Bhagavatham in the verses 13 to 35 describe the body of the Lord as made up of the various utensils used in the Yajnas, the ceremonies and all the Havis . In this description, the Havis known as Purodasam is seen as the stomach of the Lord , Praachityam(Brahma's havis) as the mouth of Yajna Varaha Murthy. Bhagavatham also describes the 7 Soma Yajnas(Agnishtomam,Atyagnishtomam, Ukthyam, Shodasi, Vaajabehyam, Atiraathram, Abthoryaamam) as taking the parts of Skin, Flesh, Metas,Bones,Majjai, Blood and Suklam . The total view of the Yajna Varaha Murthy is that of a Yajna without the affiliation of the Soma Creeper (Latha) .

Blessed indeed are those, who can do Homam in one form or other , while understanding the significance of them and their intimate relationship to the Lord .

Srirangam Srimad Andavan Swamigal.I have observed

that moment in this way. As a Great Visishtadwaita

authority HIS HOLINESS felt much happiness on seeing the

book released by our Sri Vaishnavism. As a pious

natured Acharya sarvabowmar, HIS HOLINESS had kind look at the

contents in the book with much interest. As a Poorvasramam Tamil

scholar, HIS HOLINESS suggested some grammatical errors in the

book. As a savior of parampara HIS HOLINESS blessed with Manthra

akshadai. When I told HIS HOLINESS in my humble prayers to guide us,

in all our endeavors HIS HOLINESS wore a smiling face immediately.

6. What exactly is the Essential Message of the Sermon? 1. Let us first of all state that to consider the first chapter extending up to ten verses of the Second chapter as a mere context to the Sermon is to miss the true understanding of the deeper significance of the great teaching. The important points that the first chapter styled as “Arjuna Vishaada Yoga”, brings out are: [The need for Divine Grace arises because of the limitations of our egoistic minds and the ceaseless assertions of our ego which mislead us. (2). The only answer is prayer to God with an attitude of humility and surrender. (3). There is no doubt the Deity indwelling our hearts will guide us and light our path, if only we surrender to Him in earnest prayer and become worthy instruments of His will.]: It has also to be pointed out that the Gita is not a mere dialogue to inspire Arjuna to action. It has practical guidance to our everyday life and various life situations we are confronted with. 2. There are two aspects in the Gita Sermon which are in response to the problem faced by Arjuna on the battle field. The first is philosophical in Arjuna taking it for granted that the human can be annihilated. The second is an ethical, religious and philosophical problem and concerned with Arjuna‟s confusion in regard to righteous and unrighteous action. Responding to the first aspect, which is metaphysical, Krishna enunciates in decisive terms the immortal nature of the soul and its fundamental transcendence of the body- mind- intellect - complex. In the course of elucidation of the doctrine spread over a few early chapters of the Sermon, it is made clear that the finite soul is a knower, and that it, mainly attached to and influenced by the non-self – the body-complex, becomes a free moral agent and it undergoes experiences, good or bad, according to the nature of its deeds. Its salvation and blessedness lie in its realization of its true immortal nature as spirit divine and ultimately in its attainment of God. The supreme Deity is the only Reality in whom both the goal and the way all rolled into one. The second aspect of the problem of Arjuna pertaining to righteousness (dharma) and unrighteousness (adharma) of action has been tackled by Krishna, rather, exhaustively, covering many chapters. 3. Krishna responded to Arjuna‟s prayer with the immortal Gita Sermon, which, by providing a valid law of action at once non-binding and liberating, enabled Arjuna to cross over the crisis into which he has slipped and spiritually rehabilitating him by completely transforming his personality. This brings out the eternal truth that a feeling of despair and

dejection helps one‟s spiritual progress by inducing aversion to material enjoyments if one comes in contact with an advanced and self –realised soul (guru), whose advice if followed in all sincerity. 4. The second chapter, which is Krishna‟s first response to Arjuna‟s prayer, firstly deals with the saamkhya philosophy (intellectual way), emphasizes the essential distinction between the deha (body) and dehi (the indwelling immortal spirit divine) followed by Karma yoga application of the intellectual way. “Those who understand only the saankhyan view of life – the vertical and pure aspect of the spirit soul, miss the horizontal world of actuality with its inevitable duality – joys and sorrows”. 5. One of the important contribution and, perhaps, original contribution of the Gita Sermon is development of the doctrine of karma yoga step by step. Krishna stresses the imperative of action without attachment to fruits of action in (2.47) and extends the idea by bringing in the concept of equanimity of mind, which leads to skill in action (2.48 – 50). Observing that not even for a single instant can one ever remain without acting, because of modalities born of nature all are made to act helplessly (3.5), Krishna significantly makes a general observation that activity is indeed better than non-activity (karma jyaayah hi akarman’ah) and states that any activity without the spirit of sacrifice (selflessness or the sense of devotion and dedication), this world is bound by karma bondage - (3.9). The yajna spirit emphasizes the social good and harmony (lokasamgraha) aspect in all our activities. 6. Explaining the jnaana aspect of karma yoga Krishna goes on to say all actions, universally, are being done by the gun’as of primordial Nature (prakriti) but the ignorant whose mind is deluded by egoism thinks that he is the doer and the really wise who know the truth about the divisions of the gun’as and their actions realise that it is the prakriti with its gun’as as the real doer of actions (3.27, 28). It is in the context of jnaana element in karma yoga that Krishna makes a significant observation that “He who sees inaction (Knowledge)‟ in „action (Work)‟ and also ‘action (work)‟ in „inaction (wisdom‟ is a wise yogi (discriminative) among men. He has accomplished all actions and is free”. – 4.18: 7. Krishna, emphasizing the bhakti aspect of karma yoga exhorts the dedication of all actions to the Deity and seek Him without expectations or possessiveness and with no anxiety whatsoever and with full awareness of the Self (3.30). Krishna takes the above stated ideas to the natural conclusion when He observes that the Yogi, who worships the Deity abiding in all beings (humanity – vis’vam), ever established in unity (steadfastness), whatever may be his personal way of living, abides in God - (6.31) and the exhortation to be ever in God – consciousness and carry on one‟s duties, with mind and reason surrendered to God, assuring that by this way one will surely attain God. – 8.7: This idea flowers into the crowning glory of karma yoga in the profound and most inspiring and almost revolutionary observation, an original contribution of the Gita Sermon, which emphasises “work as true worship of God in the most religious sense”, in the final Chapter (18.45, 46), considered as Krishna‟s own summing up of His Sermon.`

Pradhaana-purusha-eesvarah ,

Naarasimhavaphu In every poem or any namavali we can see repetition of main

theme of praise in the end of every para or stanza. Similar to it

SriVishnu Sahasranamam also has the main aspect of glory of

Sriman Narayana being used in different ways . Pradhaana-

purusha-eesvarah is the lord of both pradhana and purusha. He

is the total cause for the entire universe of forms. Purusha is

individuality in every one of us as jivatma. Master is termed

here as Easwara . Sriman Narayana is one and all as Maaya,

Jeeva, and Easwara. So all these are the very first nama of

Viswam. Viswam is He whose manifestation is the whole

universe of forms viraat purusha. He who has created and

entered into the entire universe as all pervading reality. In Gita

7..7, Krishna tells as There is nothing else besides Him. Like

clusters of yarn beads formed by knots on a thread , all this is

threaded on Him. He is the root cause of all things, persons,

happenings, circumstances, time,place in this world. He is the

cause of all causes. God realisation is thus stressed I this

Nama.Sriman Narayana manifests Himself as Vasudevam

sarvam , paratara (uniqueness ) and in Gita 11.43, it is said as

“Sriman narayana is the father of moving and unmoving

creation, the greatest teacher worthy of adoration,In all three

worlds there is none else even equal to Him or superior to Him.

Thus Viswam is repeated often with different phrases.

Sriman Narayana is verily the soul of all and all the things

sentient or non sentient constitute in their totality the divine

body. He is the creator, preserver and destroyer of all and hence

He is described as the beginning, middle and the end.Among the

glories of Sriman narayana, the most glorious in every kind has

been selected by Sri Krishna as HIS own and HE is that only

the best among even bests.

The next 21 st nama ' Naarasimha-vapuh in which vappuh is

form, nara is human in half and simha is half lion. The famous

Narasimha Awataram , the fourth incarnation of Sri Maha

Vishnu . In Dasavatharam HE first prefered to have

incarnations as matsya (fish), koorma(Tortoise), Varaha

(pig),living beings in water, animals, and gradually to half man

and half animal. Then HE continues as human form such as

Rama, Krishna etc.In Narasimha Avataram He destroyed the

atheistic tyrant Hiranyakasipu and blessed Prahlada his

devotee in his tender young age. Through this incarnation, HE

shows the removal all difficult situations to devotion to one. He

has a huge form of lion and man which was assumed to save

and remove the fears of a devotee once the request was made.

Swami Desikan in KamaasikaAshtakam narrates this Avataram

as Nrisimha, Adbutha Kesari, (wonderful lion),kaamaasikaa

kesari ( who became a lion of His own choice), Kapata Kesari,

(deceitful lion) ,kelee narasimham (Playful),Vishama vilochana?

( One who displays at the same time opposite emotions of anger

at Hrianyakasipu and compassion at Prahlada) like a lion which

even while pouncing ferociously on its prey continues to breast-

feed her cub).In every incarnations of Sri maha Vishnu, a

separate identity, uniqueness is seen.

SriVishnu Sahasranamam also helps as a guide to name new

born child. Periazhwar in his 6th

Thirumozhi, he fully dedicates

as his advice to the present generation in Naming the newborn

children nowadays as it became a great concern. He suggests

names such as Kesava, Sridara, Govinda, Damodara, instead of

naming them without any meaning. Kesavan perittu neengal

theni thirumino nayakan naranan thammannai narakam pughal

in 4th

pathu, sixth Thiriumozhi first pasuram conveys this

message sharply. Also shortening the names as Nanu, Madhu,

Damu, may also avoided, as the meaning may change.

IMMEDIATELY TWO FIGHTS WERE STARTED. KRISHNMA FOUGHT WITH SANOORAN AND BALARAMA WITH

MUSHTIKAN. THEY WERE FIGHTING POWERFULLYT. NO ONE CAN SAY WHO WILL WIN THE OTHER. BUT THE YOUNG GIRLS DID NOT LIKE THIS FIGHT BECAUSE THEY

DID NOT LIKE KRISHNA TO BE BEATED. PEOPLE STARTED SHOUTING “ WHAT IS THIS ? HOW CAN TWO

STRONG PEOPLE CAN FIGHT WITH THOSE BOYS “. IN BETWEEN THE FIGHT WAS GOING VERY STRONG. SUDDELNY KRISHNA LIFTED SANOORAN ABOVE HIS HEAD AND

THREW HIM ON THE GROUND. SANOORAN WAS DEAD. WHERE AS BALARAMA ATTACKED MUSHTIKAN WITH HIS

ELBOW. HE FELL DOWN AND DIED. AFTERWARDS SOME MORE WRESTLERS CALLED SALAN,

KOODAN, DOSALAN WERE CAME TO FIGHT WITH THEM. BUT THEY ALSO FINALLY FELL DEAD. PEOPLE STARTED SHOUTING WITH HAPPY. KRISHNA AND BALARAMA ENTERED THE WRESTLING PLACE. WHAT HAPPENED AFTERWARDS… WE WILL SEE NEXT WEEK.

In the sloka describing the bird chirping as though comforting Seetha , the word pakshee has been interpreted as denoting the

acharyalakshanam, A pakshee, bird has two wings which implies the

acharya who is endowed with jnana and karmanushtana, which serve as the two wings to reach the Lord. The knowledge gained from the Vedas is indicated by the word Saakhaanilayah, seated on the

branch, which qualifies the bird, Saakhaa meaning the vedaSaakhaas.

The reference to the acharya here denotes Hanuman who acts as an acharya to the lost soul in order to unite it with the Lord as explained

at the outset of the kanda. Hanuman was listening to all that was going on and thought that if he

delayed longer Seetha might give up her life. Then he pondered how to draw her attention. If he suddenly appeared she might get frightened and the rakshsas would be alerted and a fight may ensue so

that he would not get a chance to speak to her at all. He felt that it was imperative that he should speak to her because he could not tell

Rama that he saw Seetha but did not speak to her and hence had no message from her. Being budDhimaathaam varishtaH, first among the astute, to

borrow the words of Rajaji, Hanuman thought about the proper manner of speaking to her so that she would trust him and not

suspect that it was Ravana, which would be the case if he talked in chaste Sanskrit. Therefore he decided to speak in the common

language of the people of Ayodhya. Here Hanuman gives the qualifications of an ideal messenger. He

should decide upon his action depending on the time, place and the nature of the work. Those messengers who think that they know

everything spoil the work by their impetuous actions. Then Hanuman decided to sing the glory of Rama, without appearing

in front of Seetha to create confidence. Thus thinking, he started to related the story of Rama from his birth

ending with his own arrival in Lanka and seeing Seetha. Thus Hanuman was the first who narrated Ramayana because Valmiki

related only the actual happenings which is what he visualized. Seetha hearing the words of Hanuman was surprised and looked up

the tree under which she was standing with the intention of hanging herself. She saw Hanuman there, wearing white garment, and yellow in colour like a lightning. At first Seetha thought that it was a dream

and she was hearing the glory of Rama since she was thinking of him all the time. Then she got worried because it is a bad omen to see a

monkey in the dream which signifies something bad happening to one’s relatives. She feared for the safety of Rama and Lakshmana or

her father. Then she reassured herself that it was not a dream since she never slept since she parted from Rama. She prayed to the devas

that it should be real and not a dream. Hanuman jumped from the branch of the tree and started to speak to

Seetha with his hands folded on his head. He asked about her identity wondering whether she was Arndhathi separated from Vasishta or

Sacheedevi parted from Indra but then said that she looked like a human being and also a princess and hence she must be Seetha whom

Ravana abducted from Jansthana. Seetha replied that she was indeed the wife of Rama and told Hanuman about the incidents that led to her coming to the forest and the reason of her imprisonment in Lanka.

Hanuman told her that he was the messenger of Rama and that Rama and Lakshmana were keeping well but sorrowful due to her absence.

Seetha was glad to know about the welfare of Rama and Lakshmana and said that it is indeed true that if one lives long enough he will get

happiness even after hundred years. KalyaNee batha gaTheyam loukikee prathibhaathi me Ethi jeevantham aanandho naram varsha sathaadhapi

Then Hanuman advanced towards her which made her suspicious that it was Ravana in disguise and she sat down on the floor and stopped

speaking. But then she saw Hanuman standing with folded hands and was a little encouraged. Then she spoke to him asking whether he

was Ravana indeed as he was known to take any form he liked, but at the same time feeling happy on seeing him decided that he was really

the messenger of Rama and asked him about the qualities of Rama but again had doubts considering the impossibility of Rama sending a monkey as the messenger and became silent. Hanuman guessed her

thoughts and started praising Rama. He said, aadhithya iva thejasvee lokakaanthaH SaSee yaThaa raajaa sarvasya lokasya dhevo vaiSravaNo yaThaa

Rama was lustrous like the Sun and pleasant looking to the people like the moon and king of kings like Kubera. vikrameNa upapannaScha yaThaa vishnuH mahaayaSaaH sathyavaadhee maDhuravaakdhevo vaachaspathiryaThaa

Rama was valourous like Mahavishnu and true and sweet in speech

like Brhaspathi. roopavaan subhagaH Sreemaan manmaTha iva moorthimaan

He was handsome and glorious resembling Manmatha, his anger and

punishment was just and he was the best in the world. Hanuman then told Seetha that Rama has sent him as a messenger

and soon Ravana would be destroyed. Hanuman said that Lakshmana and Sugriva have sent her their salutations and reassured her about

his identity. Seetha felt glad to know that he was indeed the messenger of Rama and asked him how did he meet Rama and how did the friendship

between vanaras and men came about and also asked him to describe the characteristics of Rama and Lakshmana which Hanuman did with

glee. Hanuman related the incidents which were the cause of the friendship

of Rama and Sugriva, describing the episode of Vali and also about his own birth and how he became the minister of Sugriva, in fact

repeating the whole of Kishkindhakanda. He described how Rama lived in sorrow on being separated from her and Seetha hearing that had

mixed feelings, happy that Rama was keeping well and sad to know that he was suffering due to her separation. She said that the words of Hanuman were like nectar mixed with poison, amrtham visha samsprshtam.

Then Hanuman gave her the signet ring of Rama. Seetha seeing it felt happy as though Rama himself had come to her and praised Hanuman thus. Vikraanthasthvam samarThasthvam praajnasthvam vaanarotthama Yenedham raakshasapadham thvayaa ekena praDharshitham

“You are valiant. Competent and intelligent and the best of monkeys. You have overpowered this place surrounded by rakshasas by entering

in and searching everywhere.” sathayojanavistheerNaH saagaro makaraalayaH vikramaSlaaghaneeyena kramathaa goshpatheekrthaH

“This sea 100 yojanas wide and the abode of crocodiles was crossed by

you with praiseworthy valour and became a puddle made by the hoof of a cow.” The title goshpadheekrthvaaraasiH was first given to

Hanuman by Seetha. She said that Hanuman was no ordinary monkey as he was not at all

afraid of Ravana and moreover Rama would not have sent any one to her without ascertaining their worth.

Here there may arise a doubt why Hanuman did not give her the ring at first in which case she would not have suspected him at all. But He

wanted to dispel her possible doubt that perhaps Ravana himself had created a similar ring by his maya. Hence he talked about Rama and

described him in detail to instill confidence and then gave the ring.

10. Choodaamani pradhaanam

Seetha then expressed her anxiety whether Rama would come and rescue her as Ravana had given a time limit of which only two more

months were remaining . She said that if Rama did not come by that time She would give up her life. Hanuman comforted her saying that

Rama would surely come as soon as he returned and conveyed the news about her and the reason he did not come so far was not

because he had forgotten her or discarded her but only because he did not know her whereabouts. Rama was equally grief-stricken and suffering and spent his days thinking of her only.

Hanuman then suggested that he could end the suffering of both of them that very moment and asked Seetha to allow him to carry her on

his back so that he could take her to Rama immediately. Seetha at first pointed out the impossibility of a monkey to carry her on his back

to which Hanuman reacted by increasing his size and showing her his form by which he crossed the ocean. Then Seetha smiled and said she

knew fully well his might but it was too risky as the rakshasas may attack him and or she might fall into the ocean out of fright and if

rakshasas caught her they may take her to a place where no one can find. But finally she said that the main reason was she would not touch

the body of a male willingly and the fact that she was touchéd by Ravana while he carried her off was unavoidable as she was not in

control then. Then Hanuman accepted her arguments and said that it was true that the operation would be too risky and as a woman she

might not have the strength or courage to go through with it and the last reason she gave was entirely in accordance with her character and

he praised her saying that no one else except her would have said that.

Hanuman then asked her for some sign to prove to Rama that he had actually seen her. Seetha told him about the episode of Kakasura which was known only to Seetha and Rama and gave him her crest

jewel on seeing which Rama would feel happy and remember her as well as his father.

She said that once when she and Rama were alone, Jayantha, the son of Indra, came as a crow and pecked her at her chest and Rama who

was sleeping on her lap got up by the drops of blood that fell on him and saw the crow still turned towards her with bloody beak and Rama

got furious and took a dharba grass and sent it as the Brahmasthra which pursued Jayantha in all the worlds. Dismissed by his father, Siva

and Brahma as they did not want to help him against his offence to Rama and Seetha, he came and fell at the feet of Rama who forgave

him but the brahmasthra took the left eye of the crow saving his life. Hanuman taking the crest jewel of Seetha with devotion and respect,

took leave of her assuring her that she had to wait only till he goes back to Rama and soon she would see Rama, Lakshmana and Sugreeva arriving in Lanka with the multitudes of Vanaras to destroy

the rakshasas and rescue her. But Seetha expressed her concern that how could Rama and others cross the ocean. She said that only

Garuda, Vayu and Hanuman himself could do that. Hanuman assured her that there were only vanaras equal and mightier than him in

Sugriva’s army and if he could cross the ocean they would do it easily. He told her that only people of mediocre ability are sent as

messengers and not those of great power. Then taking leave of her Hanuman thought about the next course of action.

Hanuman a messenger of Rama, a Ramadhootha till he saw Seetha became a Ramadasa after meeting Seetha, through the purushakara

of the divine mother.

srimath periandavan moolavar was worshiped in that village

over 100 years. but as almost all the families migrated from

the village, poojas were discontinued and the moolavar was

neglected. it got buried in a paddy field over 50 or so

years. in 1996 he appeared in the dreams of a lady baktha

and revealed her where he could be found.

sri srinivasa iyengar who then lived in kovanur took the

pains to rediscover the mahan and installed it in sri

vardaraj perumal mandapam. sri srinivasa iyengar is now 93

and lives in bangalore. I spoke to him a few times from

chicago over the phone.

for the last 3 years we have started thirunakshtra and

kaingraya sevas of the mahan.

MELPATHUR NARAYANA BHATTATHIRI

(AD 1559-1632)

1.INTRODUCTON

The most famous among the Guruvayur saints was

Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri. He was born in

Melpathur illam near Tirunavaya, famed as the theatre of

the Mamankam festival in the preset Malappuram

District.

Bhattathiri's father Mathrudattar was a pandit himself.

Bhattathiri studied from his father as a child. Learning

Rig Veda (adhyayanam) from Madhava, Tharka sastra

(science of arguments in Sanskrit) from Damodara,

Vyakarana (Sanskrit grammar) from Achyuta Pisharati,

he became a pandit by the age of 16. Later Bhattathiri

married Pisharadi's niece and settled in Thrikandiyur.

2. BHATTATHIRI TRANSFER RHEUMATIC PAIN

OF HIS GURU TO HIMSELF.

Bhattathiri's Vyakarana (Sanskrit grammar) Guru,

Achyuta Pisharati, was affected with rheumatism Unable

to see his pain, by yogic strength and by way of Gurdakshina, Bhattathri is said to have

taken the disease upon himself and relieved his guru of the problem.

3. MEEN THOTTU KOOTTUKA

Bhattathiri so got affected with rheumatism and searched for a remedy. No medicine could

cure Narayana. Ezhuthachan, a well-known Malayalam poet and Sanskrit scholar told him

- "meen thottu koottuka" (use fish as side dish. Also meaning begin writing with

Matsyavathra).

4. GURUVAYUR BHAJANAM

On the face of it, the suggestion would seem offensive to an orthodox Brahmin, who are

strict vegetarians. However, Bhattathiri, understanding the hidden meaning, decided to

present the various incarnations of Lord Vishnu starting with the fish, as narrated in the

Bhagavata Purana in a series of Dasakas (Groups of ten slokas).

5. WRITING NARAYANEEYAM

Upon reaching Guruvayur, he started composing one dasaka a day in the presence of the

Lord. The refrain in last sloka of every dasaka is a prayer to him to remove his ailments

and sufferings. Every day, he sang 10 shlokas on Sri Guruvayoorappan. Each set of 10

poems ends with a prayer for early cure. The last sloka of every dasaka is a prayer to him

to remove the ailments and sufferings. He composed his work in one hundred dasakas on

the Kali day. In 100 days Melpathur finished his compositions. This work is known as

Narayaneeyam after which he recovered fully and regained happiness.

6. VISION OF LORD GURUVAYOORAPPA

On 27 November 1587 when he finished the last dashakam ("Ayuraarogya Sowkhyam")

he was cured. The 100th canto composed on that day gives a graphic description of this

form of the Lord from the head to the foot. On that day he had a vision of the Lord in the

form of Venugopalan. Melpathur was 27 years old at that time then.

7. MORE ABOUT NARAYANEEYAM

The Narayaneeyam is a devotional Sanskrit work, in the form of a

poetical hymn, consisting of 1036 verses (called 'slokas' in

Sanskrit). It gives a summary of 18,000 verses of the Bhagavata

Purana. Narayaneeyam was written during the year AD 1586.

Narayaneeyam is in praise of Lord Narayana (Vishnu) on the

equation between NARA and NARAYANA. Narayaneeyam is a

summary of the Bhagavatha and its parayana (reading) confers

great benefits; it is an effective faith therapy. It makes one God-

conscious, it concerns mainly about our present life - Aarogyam

(health and freedom from diseases) and saukhyam (happiness).

To Guruvayur also, Narayaneeyam is of utmost importance. No

work of this magnitude has ever been dedicated and addressed to the deity of any other

temple in India. It offers to the devout devotee an opportunity to visualise and worship

Mahavishnu by reading it or listening to its rendition. It will shine and conjure up at

Guruvayur in the heart of posterity.

8. NARAYANEEYAM DAY

The day on which Narayana dedicated his Narayaneeyam to Sri Guruvayurappan is

celebrated as "Narayaneeyam Dinam" every year at Guruvayur

The Devaswom celebrates the Narayaneeyam Day every year with great enthusiasm and

splendour.

9. VYAKARANAM AND MELAPATHUR

Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri, third student of Achyuta Pisharati, was also student of

Kerala School of astronomy and mathematics. He was a mathematical linguist

(vyakarana). His most important scholarly work, Prkriya-sarvawom, sets forth an

axiomatic system elaborating on the classical system of Panini.

However, he is most famous for his masterpiece, Narayaneeyam, a devotional composition

in praise of Guruvayoorappan (Sri Krishna) that is still sung at the temple of Guruvayoor.

10 LIFE TIME

Bhattathiri lived 106 years and was a profounder of purva mimamsa, uttara mimamsa and

vyakarana. He composed the Narayaniyam at the age of 27 and got cured of rheumatic

pain. Melpathur is very often called as Guruvayur saint.

No details are available about his children or other details of his wife.

24 forms of vishnu at puri temple‏

Jagannath Temple is the representation of twenty four forms of Vishnu in the outer wall on both sides of each parsva devata shrines. These twenty four manifestations are alike in their iconographic features.

They are all standing images with noband in the body possessing four arms and adorns with Kirita crown and other usual ornaments, each one of them stands upon a padmasana. The difference between any two of these images has to be made out of the way in which the Sankha (Conch),

the Chakra (Wheel), the Gada (Mace) and the Padma (Lotus) are found distributed among their four hands. The 'Rupamananda' furnishes the twenty four - names of Vishnu which and the corresponding arrangements of the four ayudhas in the four hands in each case. It is worthy to note that the number of possible permutations of four things taken four at a time is exactly twenty-four. These twenty four forms of Vishnu which have been listed in 'Rupamananda' and Padmapurana are found nowhere in any temple sculpture except in this Jagannath temple otherwise signifies the visnavite origin of the temple. The next important depiction is the ten avatars of Vishnu in the upper jangha of the Jagannath Temple. They are of course not found in order, but clear and good shape is marked in South-East corner, Varaha and Narasimha, in the South-West corner, Balarama and North- West corner found Buddha and Kalki. The avatara representation is another iconographic feature of Vishnavite temple. MEANING:

I have taken refuge (performed SaraNAgathi) to that Narasimhan, whose

lotus feet are constantly saluted indeed by all the DEvAs, Parama Yogis,

GandharvAs and KinnarAs.

The use of the word “Kalu” in this slokam by Sri RamabhadhrA is very

meaningful. The word “Kalu “is used in poetry to lay stress on the word by

which it is preceded. Here the preceding word is “SamasthA:” Sri Rama uses

“Kalu” here to assert that all --DevAs, Parama Yogis, GandharvAs, KinnarAs

and all who are not even listed -- are assembled at the lotus feet (Paadha

moolam) and are offering their salutations. “Kalu” is used as a particle in

syllogistic speech and means, “indeed, verily, certainly”.

Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple – Anthili

Anthili is 35kms West of Villupuram, is a non-descript village about 2

kms south of Arakanda Nallur Police Station on the banks of River

South Pennai. Arakanda Nallur is a Railway Station close to

Tirukkoviloor on the Villupuram- Tirukkoviloor route. Arakanda Nallur is

also connected by road. The temple at Anthili is open from 7 a.m. to 1

p.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. If prior intimation is given to the Baktha

Jana Sabha at Ph no. 04153-254098, special poojas can be arranged.

Coming to the stahala puranam, Lord Maha Vishnu in the form of

Narasimha came out of a granite pillar to kill Hiranyakasibu, the father

& tormentor of Prahlad. In this avtar, the Lord rushed to help Prahlad

without calling his vahanam, Garuda. So also in Gajendra Moksha.

These caused much anxiety to Garuda who felt extremely depressed on

being left out. He left Vaikuntam and started doing penance at Anthili.

The severe penance of Garuda pleased the Lord who appeared before

him and asked him the reasons for his penance. Having stated the

reasons, Garuda requested the Lord to relieve him of his anxiety &

depression somehow. Then and there the Lord gave him darshan as

Lord Narasimha with Mahalakshmi seated on his lap. Garuda pleaded

that this darshan should be to the people at large. Due to Garuda’s

penance, Anthili thus became a sacred spot for all pilgrims.

The Madhwa seer Sri Vyasarajar visited Anthili and had darshan of the

Lord on top of a small hillock that looked liked Garuda to him. The same

Vyasarajar became Sri Raghavendra in his next birth. Sri Vyasarajar

also consecrated a temple for Hanuman during the glorious reign of the

Vijayanagar Emperors.

Subsequently, due to continuous raids by infidels, the temple lost its

glory & importance. In its dilapidated state, the temple was well looked

after by Sri Anthili Achar and Paranur Sri Krishna Premi Swamigal

renovated the temple. Anthili Baktha Jana Sabha, the villagers and

devotees, are now looking after the temple. The kumbhabhishekam for

this temple took place on 07 June 2004.

At the temple, the Lord is with Mahalakshmi on his lap. The idol is small

but the Lord’s glory is great.

There are in all 11 important Narasimha kshetrams in Tamil

Nadu besides Anthili. They are:

1. Parikkal near Villupuram.

2. Singri near Pondicherry and Cuddalore.

3. Singaperumal Kovil near Chengalpet.

4. Poovarasan Kuppam near Panruti.

5. Sholingar near Walajapet.

6. Polur near Tiruvannamalai.

7. Sinthalavadi near Trichy.

8. Namakkal near Salem.

9. Singar Koil near Vellore.

10. Narasinghapuram near Tiruvallur.

11. Avaniyapuram near Kanchipuram.

Narasimha Kshetrams at places outside Tamil Nadu are:

1. Tirunarayanapuram at Melkote on the Bangalore-Mysore Highway.

2. Simhachalam near Visakapatnam, Andhra.

3. Katri near Kurnool, Andhra.

Who was Nammazhvar? Those who are in this world experience hunger and thirst. But the Vaishnavite saint Nammazhvar, although he had an earthly sojourn,

knew no hunger or thirst. Those in Sri Vaikuntha are the ones who do not experience the pangs of hunger or thirst. But those in Sri Vaikuntha

do not come down to Earth. Nammazhvar might have lived in this

world, but he had the experience of those in Sri Vaikuntha. All the Azhvars came for a purpose. They were sent by Lord Narayana, so that

we too may see that service to Lord Narayana is the only thing we should aspire for. The Azhvars were easily able to see His supremacy in

the idol forms too, said Adur Asuri Madhavachari. Our enjoyment of the idol form can never be on a par with theirs, because of our karmas.

What is most difficult for human beings to have? Bhakti is what is

beyond our reach. The reason lies in our ignorance. As long as we see the body and the soul as one and the same, we can never get anywhere

near the path of bhakti. Will flowers bloom in the heat of a blacksmith's

forge? Will water be available in a desert? As impossible as these is it to see bhakti in this world. It was in such a world that Nammazhvar lived,

but with no thoughts of anything but Lord Narayana.

The essence of the Sastras is that everything that is sentient and non-sentient constitutes the body of the Lord, and that Lord Narayana is the

Soul. The body exists only because of the Soul and is controlled by it. The body exists only for the pleasure of the Soul. In other words, Lord

Narayana is the Soul and everything else constitutes the body. Lord Narayana is the One for whose pleasure the jivatmas exist. The nature

of the jivatma is such that it must perform service to the Divine Couple.

And the only way to do that is to aspire for moksha. And the only way to get moksha is through bhakti or surrender. All other activities such

as bathing in sacred rivers etc., must lead to bhakti or surrender. They cannot by themselves give us moksha. Without bhakti or surrender,

there can be no moksha.

These truths are there in the Sastras. But Nammazhvar gave us these truths in Tamil.
