During the chaos and protests by women, the stage sud- denly collapsed, which injured several women, who came there with their daughters to take part in the ‘Selfie with Daughter’ programme, organised by Madadgar Pariwar, an NGO run by vice pres- ident of Gujarat BJP’s Yuva Morcha Prakash Gurjar. According to Mr Gurjar, he had been plan- ning to organise the event for the last one month and roped in several schools and local women resi- dents to set a world re- cord of maximum selfies of mothers and daughters taken at one place. “To set a Guinness World Record about Selfie with Daughteron Prime Min- ister’s birthday, we had distributed forms among local women and asked them to come here today. We had also roped in 30 schools and invited girl students with their moth- ers to take part in the event,” said Mr Gurjar. The event was organised at a hall in Bapunagar area of eastern part of city, where these partic- ipants were supposed to gather at 1 PM. “We did not expect that such a large number of par- ticipants would turn up, which has led to chaos. Thus, I have decided to cancel today’s program,” Mr Gurjar told report- ers after making an an- nouncement on the same from stage at around 1.30 pm, when the program was supposed to start with lighting of lamp. After learning about the cancel- lation of the event, angry women, mostly from low- er middle class, rushed near the stage and tried to talk to organisers, who then made a quick exit. According to the women, they were promised earli- er that a gift will be given to them along with a form to avail various govern- ment benefits, such as Jan Dhan Yojna and widow pension. When almost 100 such women were present on the stage, it could not bear the weight and suddenly collapsed. Though some women received minor injuries, the mishap left no one severely injured. The collapse further fuelled anger among women, who claimed that they were cheated by the or- ganisers. “We were told that our daughters will be given gifts at this event. We were also asked to collect forms from the entry gate to avail var- ious benefits. But, nei- ther we got forms nor our daughters were given any gifts. Af- ter the stage collapsed, many irked women ran- sacked the furniture and broke chairs kept for the dignitaries. They even shouted slogans against BJP for ‘duping’ them. Later, Bapunagar police took control of situation and dispersed the angry women. “The organisers promised to give forms of schemes and some kits to girl students. As many as 15,000 to 20,000 women participants and girls came here, which is double than what organ- isers expected. This led to chaos after many of them complained of not getting the forms and kits,” said Bapunagar Police In- spector RK Ladva.

QUOTE OF THE

DAYAfter 8.3 quate more than 1 million people evacuated in Chile

Thousands of residents of this small city in northern Chile were sleeping outside Thursday after a power-ful earthquake destroyed their homes, a tremor that forced more than 1 million to evacuate and killed eight people in the quake-prone South American na-tion. Several coastal towns were flooded from small tsunami waves set off by the late Wednesday quake, which shook the Earth so strongly that rumbles were felt across South America. A major earthquake just off the Chilean shore killed eight people, forced 1 million to evacuate and shook the Earth so strong-ly the tremor was felt across South America. Sev-eral coastal towns were flooded from small tsunami waves set off by the quake. The magnitude-8.3 quake that hit off northern Chile on Wednesday night last-ed for three minutes, causing buildings to sway in the capital of Santiago and prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning for the Andean nation’s en-tire Pacific coast. People sought safety in the streets of inland cities, while others along the shore took to their cars to race to higher ground. “I thought it was the end of the world and we were going to die,” said teary-eyed Manuel Moya, 38, sleeping with his wife on the ground outside their destroyed home in Illapel, 280 km. north of Santiago and 55 km. east of the quake’s epicentre. The town and surrounding areas have about 35,000 residents. Moya said he and his wife were in bed and watching television when the quake hit. Fearing they would be killed if they remained inside, they ran outside in their underwear. By the end of the shaking, their home, made of con-crete, had been reduced to rubble. “They said it was a magnitude 8, but it felt like a 10,” said Moya, adding that neighbours had brought them clothes. Speaking to the nation late Wednesday, President Michelle Bachelet urged people who had been evacuated to stay on high ground until authorities could evalu-ate the circumstances fully. Officials said schools would be closed in most of the country Thursday. In the past year, the nation of 17 million has endured devastating floods in the north, wildfires in the south and two volcano eruptions. In an address to the na-tion, President Michelle Bachelet said: “Once again, we must confront a powerful blow from nature.” Chile is one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries because the Nazca tectonic plate plunges beneath the South American platejust off the coast, pushing the towering Andes cordillera to ever-high-er altitudes. The strongest earthquake ever recorded on Earth happened in Chile, a magnitude-9.5 tremor in 1960 that killed more than 5,000 people.

Minister of state for finance Jayant Sinha said the goal of policymakers in India is to strengthen domestic economy to ensure that asset markets and financial markets move in an or-derly, smooth and predictable manner. “Whether it is the Fed raising rates or whether it is other macro events, the best way to deal with it is to build mul-tiple layers of defence, which we think we have now put in place,” Sinha told reporters on the side-lines of India economic convention in New Delhi. The US Federal Reserve will decide on its inter-est rates on Thursday, which has been practically zero since 2009. It is widely anticipated that the US would raise interest rates as employment data have improved.

Twitter said that it was launching a new feature called Highlights on the Android platform. The new feature, which supports over 35 languages, will enable users to see a summary of Twitter ac-tivities based on their earlier set preferences and relevance. This will, in turn, save time and effort that is taken to go through the whole timeline or jump from one page to the other. “While your home timeline is a great place to browse and en-gage with Tweets, we know it can be challenging to find the time to get through everything you’d like to see. No matter how much time you spend with Twitter, we want you to get the most out of using it,” Volodymyr Zhabiuk, senior software en-gineer at Twitter, wrote in a blog post. “To create your Highlights, we look at things like the accounts and conversations that are popular among people you follow, tweets from people you’re closely tied to, topics and events that are trending in your area or within your network, and people that are popu-lar or trending among people you follow,” he ex-plained. The users will get a notification as soon as the Highlights are ready via phone.

Gur-keerat was hero of India A’s 96-run win over Ban-gladesh A as he hit a flu-ent half-century and also got five wickets in the match. “Actually, I am trying to build my place in the batting order. I am

used to batting at No 5 or 6 for Punjab so I am en-joying it. I need to bat in pressure situations. I feel that I thrive in these sit-uations,” Gurkeerat told mediapersons at the post-match media conference. I had a split webbing playing district games (Katoch

Too many extras and boundary in latter part. This was a good bat-ting wicket. We knew that hard to go for less than 6 an over after 20 overs.

Dinamo Zagreb made a dream start to their Champions League cam-paign after a goal in each half gave them a 2-1 home win over 10-man Arsenal in their Group F match on Wednesday. An Alex Oxlade-Chamber-lain own goal followed by a Junior Fernandes header put Dinamo in the driving seat before Theo Walcott pulled one back for the Premier League side, who had striker Olivier Giroud sent off in the first half. Having failed to advance past the group stage of Europe’s elite club competition in their previous four attempts, Dinamo pro-duced a morale-boosting performance in the Mak-simir stadium. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger blamed the defeat on bad luck although he

might also question his side’s poor defending at set-pieces and a lack of creativity in midfield. “It is not the way we want-ed to begin the competi-tion but I think we were a bit unlucky as well today,” Wenger told BT Sport. “At 2-0 down...we gave it our all against a team that defends in

their own half but un-fortunately we couldn’t get back.” Organised defending aided by a packed midfield frustrat-ed a disjointed Arsenal and the home side al-ways looked dangerous on the break, with Alge-ria striker El Hilal Arabi Soudani at the heart of all their moves.

The Gujarat Agricultural Land Ceil-ing (Amendment) Bill proposes to enable the government to provide its surplus agricultural land for industrial purpose to industrial houses and for public use related to urbanisation to urban lo-cal bodies. Currently, the government could allot the surplus farm land only for agricultural use.

Ganesh Chaturthi gets eco-friendly

“Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the biggest festivals celebrated in our home and a lot of planning goes into it.We general-ly place the order at least two months in advance, with the same artisan that

we have been going to for years, near the Bhadra Kali temple. These days, more than tradition, it is also a question of being an environmentally re-sponsible citizen -these artisans use chemical

free dyes and clay to make the most beautiful idols ever.” If you think that getting a clay or mud idol custom made for you is heavier on your pocket that you would like to spend an easy al-
