QUOTE OF THE

DAYThe Bollywood gender age gapLast month, Karan Johar announced that 22-year-old Alia Bhatt would play the romantic interest of 49-year-old Shah Rukh Khan in English Vinglish director Gauri Shinde’s second movie. The 27-year age gap seems large but is not all that sur-prising, nor is it the widest. Ever so often Bolly-wood draws inspiration from Hollywood, so does this study. GraphJoy, an American data visuali-sation web site, analysed the gender age gap in Hollywood here . Mint’s Bollywood study looks at 925 movies released (and yet to be released) between 1990 and 2015, and which featured 20 top male stars. The analysis shows the median age gap between male leads and their romantic inter-est keeps widening as the men grow older. Ami-tabh Bachchan and Sunny Deol are the actors who have the widest gaps with their female co-stars and not surprisingly are two of the oldest actors in this sample. Simply put, even as male actors grow older, the ages of their romantic interests remain practically unchanged. Due to this, the la-dies really start to fall behind the men in terms of age once the men cross 35. When male leads are under 35, the median age gap is a believable five years. However, this leaps up to nearly 13 years once the men cross 35. These ages are represented by the black line separating the blue and orange boxes in the accompanying chart. For ages under 35, Shahid Kapoor has the lowest median age gap of 1 year represented by the lower end of the box on the left. Govinda and Shahrukh Khan have the highest median gap of nine years, shown by the upper end of the box on the left. For this catego-ry, the age gap varies from 13 years (represented by the end of the lower bar stemming from the left box) when Saif Ali Khan tried to woo Dimple Kapadia in Being Cyrus to 15 years (represented by the end of the upper bar stemming from the left box) when Sanjay Dutt romanced Raveena Tandon in Zamane se kya darna. For older-than-35 cat-egory, the range varies from 13 to 30 years. The last number stems from three movies. I Love New Year pairs Sunny Deol with Kangana Ranaut . In Policegiri, Sanjay Dutt was paired with a 3-decade younger Prachi Desai and in Waqt, Shefali Shah plays the wife of Amitabh Bachchan. Note that this analysis excludes Nishabd and Cheeni Kum where the script calls for a huge age difference for the main roles. It also does not count Black where Am-itabh Bachchan is Rani Mukherjee’s teacher. For ages over 35, Hrithik Roshan and Abhishek Bach-chan have the lowest median age gap of nine years.

The buzz for the Farhan Akhtar starring film Rock On 2 is being realised in the media. The film has Shraddha Kapoor. Well Farhan Akhtar and Shrad-dha Kapoor are coming together opposite the first time so many people were seen wondering if Rock On 2 was a love story between the two. But the fact is, it is just the opposite. As per the sources, we have some gist of the story, which claims that the film is not a love story between the lead stars. In fact, you will find her as the new member in their band called magic with the demise of one of the members in the band.

This simply means that Prachi Desai would be seen again in the film playing the character of Farhan the lady who brought back the band together and old friends as well in the prequel. How-ever, the source claims that the character of Shraddha seems more promising and pivotal than Prachi Desai. The movie would revolve around the life surrounding the band and have feature a couple of other members who have joined the band. As per reports, the film is slated to go on floor this September and will be made in places like Shil-long and Mumbai, while the filmmakers are plan-ning to release the sequel next August.

Punjabi film ‘The Mas-termind Jinda Sukha’, which was set to be re-leased on September 11, has been banned in India. The film, which is based on lives of the assassins of former Army General Arun Kumar Vaidya, was previously granted clear-ance from the Censor Board on July 24, but has now been banned after the union home ministry and intelligence bureau

(IB) raised objections. While speaking to HT, director of the movie, Sukhjinder Singh, said, “The advisory commit-tee of the Censor Board called us on Tuesday for a meeting in Mumbai. They told us they had re-ceived a letter from the home ministry and IB raising objections to the release of the film. They felt the movie would hurt the religious sentiments of people leading to riot like situations. As a pre-

cautionary measure the board decided to ban our film,” added the director. The director made offers of cutting scenes there were objections against. “Although we offered to cut scenes which they had objections with but on Wednesday they denied this as well. There has been no objection raised by the board in releas-ing the film overseas - so we would be releasing it abroad on the scheduled date,” he asserts.

Director Nikhil Advani’s Hero revives the famous dialogue from Subhash Ghai’s Hero (1983) at a crucial juncture in the film and IG Shrikant Mathur (Tigmanshu Dhu-lia) responds to it in the next shot. The expression on Dhulia’s face imme-diately reminds us of his iconic Gangs Of Was-seypur dialogue, “Beta humko tumhare lachchan theek nahi lag rahe hain. Tum se na ho payega.” And, you, in all proba-bility, would agree with him. After a carefully

planned media campaign, Sooraj Pancholi (Sooraj Kaushik) and Athiya Shetty (Radha Mathur) are finally here, in a sto-ry that’s still stuck in the ‘90s. Radha is your reg-ular Hindi film heroine who doesn’t care for the repercussions of her ac-tions because her father is the Inspector General of Police in Mumbai. Such a heroine creates the scope for a ‘hero’ who will tame, test and love her, in that order. Isn’t this what Hindi film writers have been doing for years? So, the two meet, sparks fly,

songs happen and now the father of the girl is after the boy’s life. Of course, they have eloped by now. But, the poor guy’s problems just don’t end here. Sooraj’s godfa-ther and jailed politician Pasha (Aditya Pancholi) has sworn to track the lovebirds down without knowing that our man has already earned more ene-mies than the expressions on his face. It turns into a multi-cornered battle from here on and the au-dience soon stops caring for any of the involved parties.

German tennis legend Boris Becker has crit-icised Roger Federer for ‘disrespecting’ op-ponents with his new ‘sneak-attack’ strategy. The Swiss maestro used the tactic, which in-volves advancing right up to the service line on an opponent’s serve, predominantly at the US Open in a bid to end his three-year Grand Slam drought at Flushing Meadows. Dubbed as the SABR--Sneak Attack By Roger, the purpose of the move is to disrupt oppo-nent’s rhythm and force them into making an er-ror. Simona Halep will be the young gun in a U.S. Open semi-final lineup that fea-tures three 30-somethings after the Romanian beat Victoria Azarenka 6-3 4-6 6-4 on Wednesday as rain hit the grand slam for the first time. Despite the gloomy weather the Italian flag was flying

proudly over the U.S. Open after Flavia Pennet-ta toppled Czech fifth seed Petra Kvitova 4-6 6-4 6-2 to join compatriot Rober-ta Vinci in the last four. Defying the odds, rank-ings and age, 33-year-old Pennetta and 32-year-old Vinci put their name in the record books by becom-ing the first two Italian women in the Open Era

With 33-year-old Serena Wil-liams also in the last four, 23-year-old Halep will be giving up close to decade of experience to all her remaining challengers. “I mean, of course we are a little bit old for the age of tennis right now,” said Pennetta. “But we are here. India cricketing icons Sachin Tendulkar and Vi-rat Kohli were involved in a friendly Twitter banter on Friday. It can possibly related to the Indian ODI cricket team captain Kohli becoming the co-owner

of IPTL franchise UAE Royals for which Roger Federer will play along-side other stars in the coming edition. Tendulkar and Kohli, both are avid fans of Tennis and Fed-erer in particular, and the cricketing pair were seen at the Wimbledon 2015

New Zealand coach Mike Hesson has included recuperating all-round-ers James Neesham and Corey Anderson in his squad for the three-Test tour of Australia later this year. The duo, who have both been battling back problems, were named on Friday in a 15-man party to face Austra-lia in Brisbane and Perth, as well as the first ever day/night Test in Ade-

laide. Hesson is banking on the all-rounders being fit enough to supplement the bowling of the pace attack, allowing him to name only four seam-ers in Trent Boult, Tim Southee, Doug Brace-well and Matt Henry. “A lot of our recent success has been based on the value of our number six batsman bowling some overs and we’re com-fortable continuing in that vein,” Hesson said. “Rather than having an

extra fast bowler not playing in Australia, we thought it more prudent for those in contention to remain in New Zea-land and be playing do-mestic cricket.” Hesson said he was confident both Neesham, who was rested from the final two one-dayers on the recent tour of South Africa, and Anderson, who was diagnosed with a dou-ble stress fracture in his spine in June, would be available.

Dhoni moves SC against Karnataka HC order over portrayal as god

Agency | New Delhi

Cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni today moved the Supreme Court against Karnata-ka High Court order in a case filed against him for allegedly “denigrat-ing” a Hindu god by posing as Lord Vishnu on a magazine cover page. The Special Leave

Petition filed by Dhoni, challenging the Karna-taka HC order which had refused to quash the criminal proceed-ings pending against him before a trial court in Bengaluru, will come up for hearing on Sep-tember 14. The High Court had last month observed: “A celebri-

ty and a cricketer like Dhoni should know the consequences of hurting religious sentiments of people. He should have known the consequences of doing such ads.” The complaint, filed by so-cial activist Jayakumar Hiremath, had alleged that Dhoni was seen on the cover of a busi-ness magazine as Lord Vishnu, holding several things, including a shoe in his hands. The High Court had said, “These celebrities are only sign-ing ads without any re-sponsibility. Their aim is to earn easy money without considering the problems it may create.”

Nano’s drive to Sanand from jinxed Singur in 2008 marked the begin-ning of Narendra Mo-di’s image-makeover - a divisive figure to the `Good M’, as Ratan Tata described him. While a one-word (Welcome!) SMS to Tata swung the project to Gujarat, many consider Modi lucky that the small car failed to enthuse the market. Reason: Modi’s largesse to bring the beleaguered project to Gujarat would have cost the state ex-chequer a bomb had the car clicked. Estimates say that at full-steam production, the sops would cost Gujarat gov-ernment over Rs 30,000 crore over 20 years. That never happened be

It all began when Ravi Patel, a 30-year-old In-dian-American invest-ment banker turned Hol-lywood actor, pestered by his parents on a long flight to India to get mar-ried, agreed to search for his bride the “desi” way. And Ravi’s sister Geeta, just out of making a war zone documentary about Kashmir, now learning to handle the camera, started filming “half seriously” the “fami-ly affair” to find a desi partner for Ravi, who had just broken with his white girlfriend of two years. How what began as a family vacation video eventually turned into a hilarious roman-tic documentary about arranged marriages is an equally heartbreak-ing story as the sibling co-directors of “Meet the Patels” relate it. “When
