The Extra Time @ SUFC Study Support Centre

is part of the Department for Children,Schools and Families (DCSF) Playing for

Success initiative and was formally opened in

2006 by Maurice Smith, Her Majestys Chief

Inspector of Schools.Playing for Success aims to establish education centres in

professional sports clubs to provide a motivating and engaging

environment in which pupils can improve their literacy, numeracy

and ICT skills as well as raise their self-esteem, confidence and

motivation. The Centre is staffed by experienced teachers and is situated in

the heart of Roots Hall, which is home to Southend United

Football Club. It boasts a classroom, ICT suite and a range of

new multimedia and portable IT equipment which can be used

    around the stadium.

The following pages are a guide to the programmes we are

offering throughout the academic year. All of the programmes

are designed to be accessible to all pupils regardless of gender,

football knowledge or level of interest in the game. None of the

programmes involves the playing of sport although mostactivities use it as a theme.

I hope the programmes are of interest to you and that we can

work together in the coming year.

I have seen quiet children emerge in a

way I would never have expected. They

have been willing to take risks that they

are not prepared to take at school. I am

    always professionally challenged by the

    outcomes the Centre produces

    Deputy Headteacher,

    Westborough Primary School

To see the children rising to all the

challenges has been inspirational. It has

been great fun for pupils and staff

Teacher, St Helens RC Primary School

I like it here and wont be happy to leave.

The teachers were very good. It wasnt

as boring as school lessons. We had so

much fun we didnt realise it was work.

    Alex, Year 7

Thank you again for a valuable

    opportunity. The children thoroughly

enjoy their time and are extremely

    enthusiastic when describing what they

have been up to. They have learned a lot

    about their own learning needs.
