At this event we will together agree and develop 5-8 new prototype services that address

some or all of the four big workforce challenges that we identified in the explore phase

20 ideas for the prototypes have been sourced through 100open.ideascale.com.

Page 4: SSSC Prototyping Workshop

April 10, 2023 4© 100%Open 2012Four interesting questions

1. How can we demonstrate the difference that social services make?

2. What can social service workers do to better involve communities to prevent problems and find solutions?

3. How do we equip social service workers to provide truly person-centred services?

4. What can be done to work collaboratively with other professions without losing the unique contribution that social services bring?

Practical Pioneering Productive

as the care inspectors don’t

concentrate on the practical assistance

it would seem only the paper work in

offices which isn’t what the individual

needs in their home or organisation.

then in the true meaning of center

planning the most important people

would be involved.

then care would meet todays changing

needs .

Dementia Diary

Dementia.

Michael Grant (n/a)

Insert cropped logo white/grey logo

Page 16: SSSC Prototyping Workshop

April 10, 2023 16© 100%Open 2012Dementia diary

Practical Pioneering Productive

This can be carried out easily by family

members or a video booth could be set

up either connected with the health

centre or Social Services.

The recordings would greatly improve

dementia training as the effects of the

illness would be seen by staff before

the individual progesses to the later

stages of Dementia.

Providing training on the person and

their life/family history promotes truly

person centred care as it allows carers

to become more empathetic.

Supervision Matters

Making supervision outcome-focused and person-centred

Joyce Lorimer

Insert cropped logo white/grey logo

Page 18: SSSC Prototyping Workshop

April 10, 2023 18© 100%Open 2012Supervision matters

Practical Pioneering Productive

Supervision must move away from

being an administrative function, this

move should generate new solutions to

problems. No additional time

requirements just a change in focus.

Reinforces the relationship between

practitioners and their line managers

as a learning and development tool

It would encourage and support new

ways of thinking and working. Being

outcome-focused and person-centred

must be at the heart of practice. What

better way to start than in the worker's

supervision?

Communicate using Skype

Skype would be a good communication tool. Links me to other agencies

within communities

Janis Johnson

Insert cropped logo white/grey logo

Page 20: SSSC Prototyping Workshop

April 10, 2023 20© 100%Open 2012Communicate using Skype

Practical Pioneering Productive

This would be practical because it

would be less time consuming and

would provide a direct link to other

social service workers who link with

nurseries.

This is not a new idea Skype keeps

people in touch on a daily basis but it

would be pioneering to link agencies

together who work in the heart of the

community.

It is fast and would be more effective if

it links me to a childs health visitor or a

family social worker.

Insert cropped logo white/grey logo

Page 22: SSSC Prototyping Workshop

April 10, 2023 22© 100%Open 2012Link Inductions to the National Occupational Standards

Practical Pioneering Productive

To know what’s required from the

onset, be more aware of holistic

approach. See the person and not just

the 'task', to have more knowledge and

more responsibility therefore will feel

more valued.

Create a direct link to the NOS, and

VQ's.It will increase the standard of

care, workers be more reflective. when

they come to do their VQ they will

already practicing to the required

standard.

To give staff clear guidelines on health

and social care values right from the

start of their careers. It will give them a

good knowledge base of the

requirements of the NCS and SSSC

Codes of practice.

Develop Skills and Tools to Share Existing

Knowledge Effectively.

information and learning materials.

Lara Burton

Page 25: SSSC Prototyping Workshop

April 10, 2023 25© 100%Open 2012Develop Skills and Tools to Share Existing Knowledge Effectively

Practical Pioneering Productive

Develop the skills and understanding of

what resources are available to share

knowledge. Use what we have more

effectively. A pilot project would help

achieve this.

Social service workers also become

knowledge workers.

Join up existing knowledge and

resources more effectively. Sharing

knowledge means we can avoid

duplication and learn from others about

what works.

Practical Pioneering Productive

It would embed key learning with

degree programmes and would support

the integration agenda.

It would be endorsed by regulatory

bodies for different professions and be

a statement of commitment to joint

working.

It would break down perceived barriers

and contribute to a shared

understanding of the role of different

professionals.

Collaborating with Service Users

collaboratively with service users.

Calum Strathie/ Surinder Kaur

Page 29: SSSC Prototyping Workshop

April 10, 2023 29© 100%Open 2012Collaborating with Service Users

Practical Pioneering Productive

This would not require additional

training or support, but would adapt

what is in place already. It is the

approach that can be changed - learn

from self, each other and the service

user.

This would revise and equalise the

nature of the practitioner/service user

relationship. Places the service user

more centrally and actively in the

change process as partners in change.

If change is the name of the game, and

resistance to change is commonly

experienced by practitioners, we need

to need to consider a truly strengths-

based approach.

Practical Pioneering Productive

It builds on existing skill, fosters co-

operation and shares and exchanges

learning.

Not common across the sector, can be

applied in local communities.

It harnesses and shares existing skills

in the sector -every hour given can be

exchanged and it builds on co-

operation.

pioneering as it would fully

Practical Pioneering Productive

This problem is endemic within

education, social and health care. It

would free up wasted staff hours to be

used in face to face practical caring.

There are no specific rota systems that

have been recognised as a standard

barer throughout the education and

care sector and could be quality

measured against a national standard.

This will save staff spending hours

compiling and altering rotas using

present, unstandardised rota systems.

Practical Pioneering Productive

May allow better preventative work,

more contact with hard to reach

groups.

Better networking and improved

relationships within communities.

Moving away from large offices that are

removed in every sense from the people

we support.

Puts social workers into places where

people gather and raises the public

profile of an underacknowledged

profession.

Isobel McCarthy

Insert cropped logo white/grey logo

Page 42: SSSC Prototyping Workshop

April 10, 2023 42© 100%Open 2012Ask people who use services

Practical Pioneering Productive

It can be applied to every service. it is really basic but for some reason

people have stopped doing this. It also

allows front line workforce to recognise

how they can directly influence the

strategic direction.

People's needs and expectations

change. The more we seek and use

feedback to inform developments the

better our services will be.

Practical Pioneering Productive

It could be part of their PSE sessions

which I understand are part of

curriculum already.

If research informs policy and from this

comes implemented strategies this

could be the key to breaking the cycle

of abuse.

If the knowledge was shared in our

secondary schools young people would

become aware of their responsibilities

in terms of the brain development and

subsequent life chances of their

children.

claire (n/a)

Page 47: SSSC Prototyping Workshop

April 10, 2023 47© 100%Open 2012Measurable outcomes

Practical Pioneering Productive

It is simple, easy to train for staff, easy

for Service Users to access and use and

is demonstrably measurable

Because different teams are trying to

achieve different aspects of change for

the same Service User, this would join

them up!

Everyone would be singing from the

same songsheet, for possibly the first

time, ever! It promotes

multidisciplinary work, is measurable

and owned by the Service Users

Social Pedagogy - recapture the joy of what

and make life rewarding.

Malcolm Christie

Page 49: SSSC Prototyping Workshop

April 10, 2023 49© 100%Open 2012Social Pedagogy-recapture the joy of what we do?

Practical Pioneering Productive

It is a hands on approach which shows

and demonstrates that we do not turn

up with a set of keys to work we arrive

to share the young persons 'life space'

giving them the importance they

deserve

It promotes risk, instead of risk

averseness! Questioning modern health

and safety e.g the risks of letting a

child climb a tree are less than the

risks to their development if they don't.

Pedagogy complements other theories,

styles and methods but focuses on

holistic learning, with 'head, heart and

hands'.

Yvette Burgess

Page 53: SSSC Prototyping Workshop

April 10, 2023 53© 100%Open 2012Planning support and charting progress in housing support

Practical Pioneering Productive

Better Futures has already shown itself

to be of practical assistance to services

and those using them.

The range of aspects of life the system

deals with is broad so it can be used

across a wide variety of services and

situations.

The system provides a way for

individuals to set measurable targets

and a straight forward way of charting

change or stability.

Marie Ross

Page 55: SSSC Prototyping Workshop

Practical Pioneering Productive

This would be practical because it

would be easy to set up.

All staff within each social service

sector have in service days/or they

should have. But not all social service

workers have certain dates that they all

come together.

An opportunity for all social service

works to work in conjunction with each
