A Hume community lawyer has called for more funding for behavioural change programs and early intervention services to counter increasing rates of family violence.

Broadmeadows Community Legal Centres Anita Plesa said the centre, which has an outreach service in Sunbury, dealt with almost 700 family violence clients in 2013-14.

Victoria Police data shows there were 1134 reported cases of family violence from Sunbury in 2013-14, up from 1034 the previous year.

A total of 183 reports were received in Kyneton up from 165.

Ms Plesa said prevention through early intervention and education was vital.

There are long waiting lists for men to attend behaviour change programs, and increased funding in this area is essential, she said.

Funding should [also] be increased to bring awareness of illicit drug abuse, such as ice, alcoholism and their link with family violence.

A recent Senate hearing was told that a combination of cuts to programs, such as rental affordability schemes and community legal centres, had increased the strain on already stretched services for victims of domestic violence.

The federal government has allocated about $200 million to combat violence against women and children under a national plan that began in 2009 and was updated in June this year.

Minister Michaela Cash, who assists the Prime Minister with his womens portfolio, defended the governments domestic violence

planning as comprehensive, saying the plan would receive $100 million more than the forward estimates.

Hume and Macedon Ranges councils have urged residents to take a stand against family violence ahead of this months White Ribbon Day (November 25).

A 3000-square-metre sign saying Violence against women Hume says no is sited at Oaklands Junction and will be visible to planes landing at Melbourne Airport.

Hume mayor Adem Atmaca said present family violence figures were unacceptable.

Every woman and girl has the right to feel safe at all times especially in their own homes, he said.

Macedon Ranges White Ribbon ambassador Cr John Connor urged residents to swear an oath against family violence at a community event outside Riddells Creek Foodworks from 11am-2pm on November 25.

Domestic violence is more prevalent than many people may think, with one in three Australian women having experienced violence from someone known to them, he said. Animations projected on to buildings across Macedon Ranges are part of 16 days of action.

A residents group opposed to a Riddells Creek supermarket development hopes a fundraising art exhibition will be the perfect lead-in to an appeal against the proposal.

Local artists provided almost 100 works for Getting Riddell Rights show Tree, which was held at Dromkeen at the weekend.

The groups appeal against plans approved by Macedon Ranges council last year returned to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal yesterday and is expected to last five days.

Getting Riddell Right won back the right to object to the proposal earlier this year after a Supreme Court challenge. The group had lodged an appeal on the grounds that the development did not meet relevant planning guidelines. An appeal was heard at VCAT in

September last year but was struck out on a technicality.

Group president Jenny Grounds hoped to raise $10,000 with the art show, which would go towards legal costs. Dr Grounds said members knew it was difficult to win a case at VCAT.

But we are quietly confident this development shouldnt have been approved by council in the first place, she said.

The supermarket plans for 1-13 Station Street include retail shops and 179 parking spaces.

The group also has concerns that the development is within 30 metres of a place of learning, with the developments size, traffic issues and the possible loss of mature elm trees presenting problems.

A long-held vision for an avenue of honour between Sunbury and Diggers Rest is a step closer to reality.

The planned avenue of memorial trees along Vineyard Road could also include storyboards, water fountains, a statue and signs honouring residents who fought or died at war.

The idea was first proposed about 12 years ago and formally presented to Hume council eight years ago.

The Anzac Memorial Walk Committee last week met with Liberal candidate for Sunbury Jo Hagan, who promised $20,000 for a feasibility study.

Palmer United Partys upper house candidate Trevor Dance also supports the campaign and has vowed to advocate for funding.

Memorial walk committee president Bryce Letcher called on Labor to match the Liberal Partys commitment.

We want to create something which is not just a memorial but an educational feature that will also beautify the entrance into town, he said.

Were looking at a combination of medium-sized trees, shrubs and bushes and smaller plants, such as kangaroo paw, to provide real variety.

Ms Hagan said a re-elected Napthine government would help the committees dream come to fruition.

An Anzac memorial walk would pay tribute to the men and women who served our country, she said.

Families that have experienced the heartache of a childs death are being encouraged to take part in a memorial service on Sunday.

Sunbury mother Kellie Clohessy says its a great chance for parents and siblings to connect with people who truly understand their pain.

Ms Clohessys daughter, Molly, was a few weeks short of her 12th birthday when she died after a series of seizures in 2012.

Molly had Dravet syndrome, a rare form of epilepsy that affects about one in 40,000 people.

Most people with this type of catastrophic epilepsy typically dont have long lives.

But Ms Clohessy said Molly, who was known for her cheekiness, shone brightly during the time she was given.

Molly was abnormally good for a child with Dravet syndrome . . . theyre usually very disabled due to the prolonged seizures that occur, she said.

She said Mollys violent seizures could last anywhere between 40 minutes and three hours.

In 2010, she suffered a series of massive seizures and was in hospital for two months. She spent much of the next 18 months recovering.

We were fortunate to have that sort of time as a seizure-free period, Ms Clohessy said.

It was almost two years to the day that she had her last seizure. She spent a week in intensive care and we knew she wouldnt be coming back to us.

Ms Clohessy said it had been a long road for herself, husband Mick and sons Tom, 17, and Lachie, 15.

One of the hardest things to work out when youve lost a child is what to say when people ask how many kids youve got, she said.

Its been two years, but it really does feel like yesterday, and thered be people out there who

    Mollys memory lives on

lost a child 30 years ago who will say the same thing.

Ms Clohessy said her efforts to establish Mollys Fund for Dravet had been bittersweet.

When we have fundraisers, its quite emotional as were doing it because shes not here, she said.

Ms Clohessy urged people who had lost a child to attend Sundays service organised by

Greenhaven Funerals. Talking to each other is so beneficial you realise you arent alone, she said.

The service is at Overnewton Castle, 51 Overnewton Road, Keilor, from 11am and will include a video tribute.

A group of Macedon Ranges cyclists has come a long way, figuratively and literally, since first hitting the road about 18 months ago.

Carole Wood, of Team Escargot, said the squad had cycled many hundreds of kilometres since starting training for its first Great Victorian Bike Ride early last year.

The squad is among almost 4000 cyclists entered in this years ride from Albury to Bright and through Victorias high country.

Our first official training ride completed a round trip of about six kilometres, Ms Wood said.

Spurred on by our success, we regularly met on weekends and explored our local area, ensuring cafes were situated about halfway through our planned route.

    The cyclists gradually increased their

endurance and confidence before completing last years ride along the Great Ocean Road, from Mount Gambier to Geelong.

Ms Wood said the decision to tackle this years event was an easy one.

I think the sense of achievement at the end of the ride was a major factor, she said.

We felt we could get even more out of participating in 2014, having completed one ride and knowing what to do to make it easier.

The cyclists meet for training rides in the Macedon Ranges about four times a week.

This years ride is from November 29 until December 7.

Study pledge on intersection Improvements to a dangerous Romsey intersection will be investigated if Labor wins the November 29 election, Macedon candidate Mary-Anne Thomas says. Opposition roads spokesman Luke Donnellan visited the intersection of Barry Street and Melbourne-Lancefield Road last Wednesday to announce $200,000 for a VicRoads study to determine if traffic lights or a roundabout are the most appropriate solution.

Netball rooms to be upgradedKyneton netballers will benefit from a $23,400 grant to upgrade change- rooms at Kyneton showgrounds. The grant was announced by state Sports Minister Damian Drum during a visit to Kyneton.

Kinders on a promiseLabor has promised $240,000 for two Macedon Ranges kindergartens if it wins the state election. Opposition spokeswoman for children Jenny Mikakos said the ALP would invest $120,000 to rebuild outdoor play spaces at Romsey kindergarten and Swinburne Avenue kindergarten in Gisborne. Macedon candidate Mary-Anne Thomas said life was getting harder for young families and local kinders were falling apart.

Sunbury man stands for PUPSunbury resident Trevor Dance will stand for the Palmer United Party as its lead candidate for Western Metropolitan in the upper house at this months state election.

Macedon Ranges Residents Association is urging state election candidates to commit to state-level protection for the shire after claiming the government broke a promise to stop the area being suburbanised.

Group secretary Christine Pruneau said that when elected in 2010, the government promised to protect the shire by reconfirming a 40-year-old policy.

But in a recent radio interview, Planning Minister Matthew Guy said the policy needed to be contemporised.

He indicated the councils localised planning statement, adopted in September, fulfilled the governments pledge.

A council report said the statement clearly articulated the special rural nature of the shire, providing clear guidance for the protection of its character and environmental qualities.

Ms Pruneau said the Macedon Ranges were in deep, deep trouble, with the lack of state protection opening up the possibility of development that would destroy the shires character.

She said residents and visitors came to the area because it wasnt like Melbourne.

It wont stay that way without state policy protection, she said.

Labor candidate Mary-Anne Thomas said Mr Guys preference for localised planning statements had completely failed.

It has all the ingredients to create a relaxed warmth: floorboards, exposed brick and slate and quirky dormer angles upstairs. Two upstairs bedrooms (with robes) share a skylit bathroom and flank a rumpus room; another two are downstairs and share a bathroom with a tub designed for lay-back relaxation. An appealing lounge room has a wood heater, while a family-meals area abuts the kitchen which has a stack of timber cupboards including beneath an island bench. The back verandah combines with a covered deck to provide spots to soak up soothing garden views. A split-system, gas heating, ducted vacuum, chook house, a productive orchard, vegie garden (tank water keeps gardens flourishing), a shed and double garage are other perks.

On about 0.4 hectares of stunning botanical beauty in a blue-chip locale, this beautifully formed house built in the 90s oozes class and has been designed to a standard that puts it in the timeless bracket. Theres nothing flashy about this place, instead it has something finer: a quiet elegance that will see it outlast easy comeeasy go trendiness.

Several rooms are the beneficiary of some top-notch chippie work evidenced in customised cabinetry built from Tasmanian ash, a wood used for all window frames and architraves and it also appears in small snippets elsewhere to cleverly reinforce

the motif. Its this type of detail that cements the homes quality and allows it to live up to the astonishing surrounds on view from all angles.

Equally gracious living areas are a lounge-dining room bisected by a brick fireplace, and tiled meals and carpeted family rooms. Its in the latter that the cabinetry really struts its stuff; its wide expanse caters for concealed storage, open display shelves and a liquor cabinet coupled with a bar fridge. This room also has a Heat Charm wood heater tucked under a copper canopy,.

The kitchen has a two-door pantry, dishwasher, wall oven and an electric

cooktop under a concealed rangehood.Four bedrooms include the main just off

the entry foyer which has mirrored built-in and walk-in robes, and a two-way en suite.

Across the way is a study with, again, customised cabinetry. Other bedrooms (each with robe) down a tiled hallway at the back include one with a door to a large gabled, vine-adorned pergola just the start of backyard treats. It also has an en suite, making it perfect for guest or extended family member. These rooms are near the main bathroom and laundry which flank a two-way toilet; theres also a great little mud room here with storage galore.

AREYOU READYTO BUY?You can be certain youre properly prepared when youve covered these bases:-Youve saved your deposit, consulted a mortgage broker or financial planner and made sure you canafford the monthly repayments on your proposed property loan -Youve prepared yourself mentally, meaning youre prepared to move on from being a renter and sacrifice the flexibility, or youre ready toinvest in property and accept the responsibilities and concerns of becoming a landlord -Youve properlyconsidered where you can afford to buy and the standard of property your budget will stretch to -Youvedone the footwork in the suburbs you want to buy in and feel confident you understand fair propertyvalues - Youve considered whether it would be wise to obtain income protection insurance, in thecontext of your personal and family obligations -Youve considered renting versus buying and weighed thebenefits and downsides carefully -Youve received legal advice (or at least had a Conveyancer inspect thecontract of sale) and youve carried out a building and pest inspection that is to your satisfaction -Youreprepared to accept your obligations as a good neighbour i.e. contribute your share to maintenance in astrata plan or share costs of replacing fences and pruning gardens with houses.

FEATURES FOR FAMILIESBuying your first home as a young or soon-to-be family is an exciting prospect, but how do you knowwhats right for you? Double or single storey? A home thats got smaller rooms but is spread across twostoreys may prove to be a more desirable family home than a single-level property. The top floor ofdouble storey homes can be used as a space for childrens bedrooms and play areas, while living spaceis downstairs. By contrast, you might favour expansive open plan living, so a single level home could suit.In this case, its preferable to buy a property that has bedrooms and living space at opposite ends ofthe house. Know your areas amenities -Theres no point in buying a picture perfect family home if yourchildren will end up having to travel long distances to early childcare, primary or high school. Lookinginto the future at schooling options could save you heartache down the track. Run around space - Itsno secret that kids who have run around all day, whether at home or school, tend to settle better in theevening. While its important to have ample interior space, an outdoor area for a spot of backyard cricketor children to run around in can be incredibly valuable.A second bathroom -Avoid the stress of trying tocoordinate the familys ablutions with a single bathroom and buy a property that has two bathrooms, orat least separates the toilet and shower.

DESIGNA NURSERY ONA BUDGETOf all the home decorating and renovating you may undertake in your life, chances are designing a nurseryfor your little bundle of joy will take the cake when it comes to the love you put into it. Fortunately fornew parents working on a budget, there are plenty of ways to design a nursery without draining your bankaccount. Its not used, its vintage -Theres no reason why quality second-hand items cant be an integralpart of your nursery design.Whether you use furniture from your own childhood, toys given from friendsand family, or special finds bought at thrift shops, used items can provide nurseries with a charming, vintagefeel. Of course youll want to use brand new buys for bedding and other crucial items, but theres nothingstopping you from making that brightly coloured side table you spotted at your local second-hand store asunny part of your new babys room. Make it personal- Buying new paintings to hang in your babys roomisnt necessarily a bad idea, but why not make the space more personal? Family photographs can perfectdecorations, as can homemade arts and crafts. Keep the baby in mind - Its easy to get swept up in theexcitement of designing your babys nursery, but keep in mind what youre doing for our child and whatyoure doing for you. After all, will your baby really notice the difference between an expensive toy chestand a common box used for storage? At the end of the day, it should be the baby youre buying for, notyourself.

MeMoriesLast week we paused to remember those who made

the ultimate sacrifice in the First World War, the War

to End all Wars. I would like to share with you my

Mothers memories, not of the war, but of its end.

Written in her own words and taken from her memoirs

here are my Mothers memories of the end of World

    War 1, 1914 1918.

The news of peace must have reached Devonport on

a Monday because Mother was doing the washing.

She was doing the washing on this particular Monday

when some young people rushed up to the house to

say Mrs Lonie, you are wanted at West Devonport,

peace has been declared and there is to be a service

of Thanksgiving now, on the esplanade. You are

wanted to play the organ. For once the washing was

forsaken. We all rallied round helping to get Mother

and ourselves tidied, and then hurried down to the

ferry and across to the esplanade on the west bank

of the river. There, our Mother played for Devonports

    first Armistice Service.

My Mother was eight years old at the end of The War

to End all Wars, she then lived through World War

2, the Korean conflict, Vietnam and so many more

conflicts and we have to ask what have we learnt?

We must never forget those who fought for us and

    those who fight today.

    Lest We Forget
