Health experts have called for drastic changes to rules for club-operated gaming venues following revelations that Sunbury pokies operators are listing items such as replacement of grease traps as beneting the community.

Latest Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation reports show that Sunbury’s three club-operated venues also lodged claims for things such as administration fees and cleaning and security expenses.

Under current laws, clubs operating pokies pay a reduced rate of tax compared to hotels as long as they show 8.33 per cent of the venue’s poker machine revenue was spent on “approved community benets”.

Change pokie rules pleaApproved benets can include housing

assistance for the disadvantaged and poverty relief and services for the prevention and treatment of problem gambling and drug and alcohol addiction.

According to the commission, none of the Sunbury venues recorded any expenditure in those categories, although Sunbury Bowling Club listed $7166 for the provision of health care and $500 for ‘‘other philanthropic purposes’’.

Monash University public health professor Charles Livingstone said that while the commission’s reports showed signicant funds were directed to community sports facilities and activities, they remained deeply concerning.

‘‘e reason they have this whole procedure in place is to legitimise the amount of money the clubs, but also pokies generally, rip out of communities,’’ he said.

‘‘Time aer time, what we nd is that two- thirds, and in many cases more, of the claimed benets are actually the running costs of the clubs. It’s airconditioning or capital works … a new TV. e rules need to be tightened and these loopholes closed.’’

Dr Livingstone said typical arguments that club-run pokies created many jobs and generated signicant economic activity were ‘‘nonsense’’.

‘‘Poker machines are not a magic pudding,’’ he said. ‘‘What they do is take that money away from other businesses.’’

Sunbury Community Health’s general manager of child, youth and family services, Marcus Bosch, said calls for reform were justied, with studies consistently showing most of the money raked in by pokies came from problem gamblers.

‘‘e majority of the clients of our gambling counselling service have a problem with poker machines,’’ he said.

‘‘e initial, most evident issue is obviously nancial distress, but they oen are also experiencing extreme emotional distress.”

Managements of pokie venues Sunbury Football Social Club, Sunbury United Sporting Club and Sunbury Bowling Club did not respond to questions before deadline.

Kyneton CFA member Shani McCulloch thrills to a unique perspective of the Macedon Ranges during a loop with pilot and fellow CFA volunteer Matt Henderson in his CT/4 Airtrainer. ‘‘We’d just used them for a triathlon on January 10,’’ Mr Millett said.

‘‘ey were used in a six-week training block leading up to that. To steal them from these guys … it’s shocking.’’

Members of a Sunbury team that provides sports opportunities for disadvantaged people are reeling aer the the of four bicycles from a locked container in Gap Road.

Reclink co-ordinator Brian Millett said the team was desperately trying to arrange replacement bikes so members could train for a triathlon in April.

‘‘It’s so very disappointing,’’ he said. ‘‘ey were the perfect bikes for what we need. ey were dierent sizes and heights. We had a

hybrid for the guys who can’t ride very well and some racers for those who could. You don’t like losing anything, but this really hurts.’’

e donated bikes, with a combined value of about $3000, were taken from the container behind Sunbury Baptist Church between 9pm and 11pm on January 30.

Shovels, rakes and other items used by Reclink’s work-for-the-dole program were also stolen. e bikes included a white Scott hybrid, a grey Kona hybrid, a black Diamondback racer with Shimano 105 gearing, and an older white-and-blue racer.

events’’, they were a major milestone in the lives of team members.

‘‘We have guys who had never swum before,” he said.

“Even to turn up for it – it’s a signicant thing in their life.’’

Anyone who can help with providing replacement bikes for the Reclink group is being asked to phone Mr Millett on 0425 759 706.

A Sunbury police spokesman urged anyone with information about the the to phone 9744 8111.

A community wind farm project, rejected by the former Liberal state government, is a step closer to being realised.

Information about wind frequency and speeds will be collected over the next 12 months then used by the Woodend Integrated Sustainable Energy (WISE) group to prepare a business case for investment in three turbines about six kilometres south of the town.

Wiring and anemometers were installed aer a solid day spent digging through rock at the proposed site, deep within a pine forest managed by Hancock Victorian Plantations.

WISE hopes the turbines will be able to power as many as 4000 homes within three to ve years.

Group spokesman Barry Mann said members were excited the project was taking shape aer almost ve years of delays caused by the former Liberal state government’s controversial wind farm bans.

‘‘e equipment will monitor speeds there … that will be our bankable info, which we will take to potential investors and the community,’’ he said. ‘‘We’re condent it’s the right site.’’

Mr Mann said a range of private and community investment options would be explored. Talks with a number of nancial institutions and energy providers are ongoing.

‘‘Funding won’t be an issue,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s more a matter of how big we make it and what kind of partners and benets we can get for the community.’’

You don’t have to be Scottish to appreciate the drama and regal ceremony of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo this weekend.

And, increasingly, you don’t even have to claim ancestry to become a member of the many Scottish bands dotted around Victoria.

Sunbury’s Chris Bouwmeester, whose family is of Dutch extraction, is president of the 60-member Melbourne Highland Pipe Band. He’s one of four Sunbury musicians who will be in the Melbourne band when it takes part in the

tattoo at Etihad Stadium. Ian orn and Don MacLean are pipers, while Janet Bouwmeester plays the tenor drum and her husband plays the snare drum.

It’s just the fourth time the tattoo has been held outside the UK.

Chris said the Melbourne band was welcoming more and more members whose families hail from places such as Vietnam.

‘‘As Melbourne has changed, so has the band,’’ he said.

e band, which has members ranging in age from nine to 74, is one of two Australian groups invited to be part of the Scottish extravaganza at Etihad Stadium.

Chris Bouwmeester, who also played when the tattoo visited Sydney six years ago, says it’s a great honour.

‘‘ere’s nothing like it – it’s a very special thing to be a part of,’’ he said.

Hume council has slammed as ‘‘appalling’’ the the of large amounts of copper wire from ratepayer-funded venues at Sunbury.

Even as the council decried the the of three tonnes of wire installed as part of long-awaited upgrades at Sunbury Recreation Reserve, thieves struck again last ursday night, ripping a 30-metre electrical cable out of the ground at Learmonth Street Preschool.

‘‘I ask every resident of Hume to keep a close eye on anyone who loiters around our reserves in a suspicious manner.’’

Copper wire taken from Sunbury Recreation Reserve on January 11 was valued at $12,000 and cost the council $4000 to install.

Cr Patsikatheodorou said thieves had gone to enormous lengths, breaking into a switchboard before yanking cables from the ground. ‘‘ese individuals are lucky to be alive because they wouldn’t have known whether the electrical

A similar incident took place at Eric Boardman Reserve overnight on January 30 when thieves removed $20,000 of cables that powered oval lights.

Mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou said the thes had cost the community dearly.

e sprawling housing estates of Sunbury and Diggers Rest will tap into an extra four million litres of recycled water a day, once a $53 million wastewater plant upgrade is nished in early 2018.

Water Minister Lisa Neville, who was in Sunbury on Monday to announce the start of the biggest project in Western Water’s history, said farmers, sports clubs and the area’s growing businesses would also benet with extra water available during times of drought

increase the volume of wastewater the plant is able to treat from 5.9 to 9.2 million litres a day, will also create more than 50 full and part-time jobs during construction.

Western Water chairman Terry Larkins said the project would ensure the authority was ready for the challenges of massive population growth and climate change.

‘‘It’s impossible to go down the streets of Sunbury and Diggers Rest and not notice the changes that are ongoing,’’ he said.

‘‘New houses are going up, new businesses are opening, our schools and sporting clubs are

and low rainfall. ‘‘It’s not just about how you manage the sewage, but actually about how you can utilise that to create better immunity in our community,’’ she said.

‘‘If you think back to the last drought we had, you had sporting ovals that weren’t green, you had businesses that struggled because they weren’t able to access the water.

‘‘We know how absolutely critical security of water is to business and economic growth but also how important water is to the social fabric of communities.’’

Ms Neville said the upgrade, which will

Mr Larkins said the project would also ensure better protection for Jacksons Creek and its biodiversity, while the upgrade project would stay within the footprint of the existing plant at Sunbury.

Recycled water has been supplied to sports elds and producers, including grape and olive growers, since it was introduced in the 1980s.

A community reference group has been involved in planning the new plant.

There are black ones, green ones, red ones, even purple … some have pips, some are stuffed, some sweet, others sour. Yes, we’re talking olives.

With so many different types available, how do you know which are best when, and which are the freshest? And what do you serve them with to best suit their distinctive individual avours?

Sebastian Pitruzzello, of Sunbury’s Pitruzzello Estate Olive Grove & Vineyard, gives us his advice on what to look for in an olive, and what is best to pair them with.

“An olive’s colour indicates its ripeness; for example, green olives ripen and then become black olives. A general rule is, the darker the olive, the riper it was when it was harvested,” says Sebastian.

“When buying olives, pick rm ones with a nice colour and texture, and also take note of their overall quality and where they have come from.”

Don’t like green olives? Why not opt for a purple one? Sebastian says there are so many to choose from that everybody should be embracing olives.

“The black olives are the kalamata, mission, nyon and nicoise. There are lots of green ones, such as volos, sevillano, cerignola, castelvetrano, picholine and gordal. Then there’s the ligurias, which are olive-coloured and gaetas, which are a purple-brown.”

“Black kalamata olives are best in salads and hot dishes, such as chicken cacciatore. Green olives go well when served in a green or potato salad.

“And you can serve olives on pizzas, make them into a spread or add them to an antipasto platter,” says Sebastian.

To get the best out of your olives and preserve their avour, keep them in the fridge, soaking in the liquid they came in and loosely covered with plastic wrap, for up to 10 days. But never leave your olives in a sealed container.

9 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 9, 2016

“In fact, we’d go so far as to say that opening a bottle of our award-winning wine, which can be beautifully matched with a pizza, is like taking in Macedon Ranges’ sunshine from a bottle. But, even on a cloudy day, the views remain the same. The ambience of our place is always something special.”

The go-ahead winery, open to the public for the past 16 years, continues to expand its reach as a tourism hot-spot. Four eco-cottages provide accommodation with a difference, while teaching sessions about their wines have become drawcards for tourists and wine buffs alike.

“And we’re very proud to be able to provide employment for many locals, too,” says Barbara. “It’s really a two-way street: we support locals and they wonderfully support us by introducing friends and relatives to our unique winery.”

Wood-red pizzas are now served every day, as are light lunches and, of course, the unmissable estate-grown wines.

Gisborne Peak Winery, 69 Short Road, Gisborne. Opens 11am-4pm weekdays and 11am-5pm Saturday-Sunday. Inquiries: 5428 2228 or gisbornepeakwines.com.au

Wood-red pizzas are now served every day …

Mama Bear and Papa Bear are best known for serving just-right porridge, but at eclectic Gisborne Peak Winery, it’s the wood-red pizza ovens that bear these affectionate nicknames.

Cellar door manager Barbara Nixon says doubling their oven capacity means visitors get to tuck into their pizzas faster in the alfresco dining area, which has also been snazzed up.

“Food and wine just seem to taste better outdoors, and we wanted to enhance the whole experience for our visitors. We now have large shade sails, new decking and paving, and extra seating,” says Barbara.

“And, of course, the fabulous views across our vineyards and Macedon Ranges beyond add even more to the wining and dining experience.

Al fresco ‘just right’ for sunshine in a bottle

Why does food & wine taste better outdoors?Just because it does.

Which is why we have upgraded our al fresco area. Come and see for yourself.

Huntington has been a landmark since 1910 and has all the graciousness of its era, with contemporary twists added in all the right places. The English gardens on the block of about 2.31 hectares are a spectacular accompaniment to the house, and a machinery shed, stables and two paddocks establish the property as a place for horses and pasturage (red volcanic soil). Four elegant living rooms – one the “long room” (oorboards, replace and painted ceiling boards) spanning the rear – are entertainment and family-friendly, and the kitchen is equipped with a dishwasher. There’s a separate study. Two of the four bedrooms have an en suite, while the main also has a study area. Ornate cornices, rosettes, painted dado panels and replaces are heritage pointers. Within two minutes of town, the property has an integrated double garage with three abutting utility rooms, a detached one-bedroom cottage and outstanding outdoor entertainment spaces.

This log cabin on about 9.7 hectares, about 2.02 hectares of which is cleared, will tempt people who connect to nature and rural life. The house is rich with rustic warmth, and has a great terracotta-tiled lounge-dining room under a pitched timber ceiling, with a wood heater and connection to a north-facing, enclosed verandah. Three of the four bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and share a modern bathroom; the main has walk-in wardrobe and an en suite, plus direct access to a spa built into an enclosed deck overlooking gardens. Timber exposed beams and ceilings, along with big windows, feature in all bedrooms. A creek, fruit trees, a vegie patch and brick barbecue are found down garden pathways, and pretty plantings make outdoors a treat. A large dam, two 22,000-litre water tanks, a bore, four-bay shed with attached rumpus room, a woodshed and small paddocks complete a pretty picture here.

Within a few minutes’ drive of Gisborne township, this property of about 4.2 hectares is all about country style, with an enormous rear paddock ready for a crop or for grazing. It’s also a cracker of a place for tradies, who will value the 20x15-metre steel shed (with concrete oor, power connection and attached open bay), accessed via one of two gravel driveways and with abundant parking space in its precinct.

The house, with deep front and back verandahs, has been updated recently and

now sports purple (the colour of luxury and power) as a decor accent. This right-royal shade appears rstly as new carpet in the entry foyer, owing through timber double sliders into the lounge-dining room to the right.

Another set of sliders ushers in the living hub, laid with Tassy oak oorboards and warmed by a Clean Air wood heater. The kitchen in here is classic black and white, with the purple glass splashback a dramatic highlight. There are plenty of white cupboards and drawers topped

with granite-look laminate, a Bosch underbench oven, 900mm gas cooktop and a dishwasher; a big window overlooks the backyard.

The laundry, next to the kitchen, has enough space to serve as a hobby room, and comes tted with a wall of closets.

Two bedrooms off the entry foyer include the main with purple wall paint, quality tab curtains in white, a walk-in wardrobe and an en suite with a shower that has a sitting ledge. Two more bedrooms, at the opposite end of the house, have built-in wardrobes

and share a separate toilet and a fresh bathroom in aqua and white.

The huge, fenced backyard is dotted with eucalypts and has a garden bed along the verandah. The aforementioned paddock is rimmed with large trees and there’s a dam right in the middle.

Within cooee of the Calder Freeway, the property has evaporative cooling, ducted heating, a water tank and town water, and a double carport.

25 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 9, 2016

SPORT

It was grand nal heartache for Central Highlands at the Victorian Bushrangers under-18 state championships at the MCG on Sunday.

Looking for their rst state title since 2013, the Highlanders had their chances against Metropolitan South East Bayside but eventually fell 35 runs short.

Highlanders coach Paull Jerey said it was the little things that made the dierence.

Metropolitan South East Bayside batted rst and was bowled out for 232 in its nal allocated over.

“We’d like to have batted rst and put the pressure on them to chase but we lost the toss,” Jerey said.

“Two of their batsmen went on to make scores and we dropped both of them when they were on about 10. It could have been a dierent story.

“We could have done things a bit dierently.”

Bacchus Marsh’s Jack Lalor and East Ballarat’s Harli Givvens took three wickets each for the Highlanders.

At 1-91 in reply, the Highlanders appeared on track to chase down the runs with ease. But then it all went wrong and they lost 9-106 in being dismissed for 197.

“We lost wickets at crucial times,” Jerey said. “A few of our players were caught on the boundary, hitting the ball straight down elders’ throats.

“ey executed better in the eld than we did; they elded really well.”

With 61, Tom Rogers, originally from Gisborne, was the Highlanders’ standout batsman.

It took his total for the tournament to 338 at an average of 84.50.

“He had a fantastic week and he’s only 16,” Jerey said. “He’s playing Premier Cricket [for Melbourne Uni], which is amazing.

“I think he broke the record for the most runs scored by a Central Highlands batsman in an under-18 carnival.”

North Ballarat’s Jakob Tidyman made 34 in the nal.

Despite the loss, Jerey said the competition and the chance to play on the MCG had been an amazing experience for the boys.

Five of the squad are eligible to play in the tournament again next year.

“e boys got along really well and loved the experience,” Jerey said. “ey’ve learnt a lot and can take it back to their club cricket.”

Tara Murray

Youngstersfall at thenal hurdle

Deant Sunbury United shuns the dreaded R-wordDespite being on the bottom of the ladder and in danger of relegation, Sunbury United isn’t thinking the worst in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup.

With less than two points separating the bottom four sides and with only three weeks le in the season, United coach Jeremy Newman knows his side can control only the task at hand.

“We’re really not looking at relegation,” Newman said last week.

“e side is on the improve and we don’t want to put more pressure on the boys by talking about relegation. We have to concentrate on

ourselves and stick with it and keep improving.” Newman said that being in the relegation ght hadn’t even crossed the mind of the reigning premiers at the start of the season, though they weren’t necessarily expecting another premiership, either.

“ere are lots of positives from this year even if the results don’t look great,” the coach said. “We’ve had 10 players make their rst XI debut, which is really good.

“I had a fair idea there would be at least ve to six changes to the side.

“ree players had knee surgery in the o-season and others have stepped back to

spend more time with their families.” Knowing it would take time for players to settle into the lineup, Newman is pleased with those who have stepped up.

“Steve Fogarty is batting at number three and puts a lot of value on his wicket.

“Jesse James is a young fast bowler who listens and wants to learn, and we’ve seen massive improvement over the season.

“Harrison Knott, who’s been dropped back to the seconds, is scoring 50s and taking ve-wicket hauls in the same games at that level. He’s beneted from playing rsts.”

Meanwhile, United has a lot of work to do to

knock o Gisborne in the current round. Aer being bowled out for just 90, United needs to take early wickets on day two when Gisborne resumes at 3-39.

“If we can get one or two early wickets we’ll be in with a chance,” Newman said.

“We need to bowl tight, not leak too many runs.”

Elsewhere, Riddell is 2-18 chasing Sunbury’s 147; Romsey is 0-2 in pursuit of Bacchus Marsh’s 237; and Woodend is 4-28 chasing Diggers Rest Bulla’s 149.

Gisborne’s run in the Cricket Victoria regional T20 competition has come to an end in the conference nals, just one win short of an appearance at the MCG.

e Dragons’ hopes of making it to the nal match of the 16-team statewide competition were dashed by their loss on Sunday to Victorian Turf Cricket Association outt Doutta Stars.

Dragons president Andrew Headberry acknowledged the club didn’t even know of the competition’s existence 12 months ago, and the side had exceeded all expectations.

“Today was full of character,” Headberry said aer the loss to Doutta Stars. “We just said to the boys then that they’d had a real crack and done the town proud.

Dragons ‘do town proud’ “For a while there, we just kept turning up

and winning matches. We were thereabouts today but couldn’t quite get it done.”

Batting rst, Doutta Stars made 4-157 on the back of 80 from Lorenzo Ingram. Clinton Young looked the most dangerous of the Dragons’ bowlers, taking one wicket, while Jay King bowled tightly, conceding 22 runs o his four overs.

In reply, the Dragons could manage only 9-139, Young top-scoring with 43 while Eamon McKenna contributed 37 at the top of the order.

“We lost wickets of the wrong guys at key times. Our best T20 batsmen were out early,” Headberry said. “Simon Harman and Tahir Afridi were back in the shed when we had only 20-odd on the board, which was always going to make it hard. Jarryd [Vernon] hasn’t played much cricket for the past three or four weeks

… he tried hard but was underdone. In the end, we really needed Clint or Eamon to go on and make a big score.”

Headberry said the Stars were steadier at key moments and their experienced players had batted well.

An allround performance by former AFL player Clinton Young was the standout for the Dragons. “He just turned up one day and asked [to] play a game,” Headberry said. “He’s fantastic around the club and is obviously getting better and better.”

Headberry said the T20 campaign had le a big impact on the club. “We had a lot of our under-16 kids here watching this competition.e shorter form of the game is just going to keep getting bigger and bigger, and obviously the kids will be playing a lot of it. It’s good for the kids to see the club going so well.”

Eamon McKenna scored 37 in Gisborne’s loss. (Shawn Smits)

Only a massive loss can stop Gisborne from nishing top of the Central Highlands bowls division 1 ladder.

With one round remaining in the season, Gisborne is 15 points clear of Kyneton Golf Gold.

Two rink wins against Lanceeld in the nal round will be enough for Gisborne to nish rst.

On Saturday, Gisborne easily accounted for Kyneton, 122 (18)-84 (0), with Matthew Bacon’s rink winning 40-19.

Kyneton Golf Gold also had a massive win in knocking o Kyneton Golf Blue. Gold won 132 (16)-65 (2), with Colin Schmidt taking the rink win for the Blues.

Lanceeld kept the pressure on second-placed Gold and remains four points behind heading into the nal round.

On Saturday, it defeated Woodend 94 (15)-83 (3).

Bacchus Marsh defeated Romsey 109 (18)-85 (0) in the other match.

Meanwhile, Sunbury has all but cemented a top-two spot with three rounds remaining in Bowls Victoria’s division 2, section 2.

Facing third-placed West Coburg, Sunbury won 100 (18)-55 (0).

Brad Janner’s rink won 31-8, Mark Cowan won 19-17, Carla Krizanic (nee Odgers) won 23-22, and Brad Willoughby won 27-8.

Sunbury is atop the ladder, nine points clear of Fitzroy Victoria (2) and 45 clear of third-placed Glenroy (2).

It was a good week for Janner, who won a successive Sunbury male club champion trophy and the club’s male pairs with his father David.

Krizanic won the women’s singles club championship. Glenn Johnstone jnr and his Gisborne teammates are set to nish on top of the ladder. (Kristian Scott)
