St Agnes Village May 2021 Edition
Larry the Koala
Message from the Editor
Dear Residents,
Welcome to the May 2021 Village Newsletter. Meet Larry the
Koala on the front cover of this edition of the Village Newsletter.
Painted by Lourdes Village resident, Ann-Maree Duncan. What a
wonderful painting! Thank you to Ann-Maree for allowing us to
place this on the front cover.
We said goodbye to daylight saving in April. The daylight hours
are shorter and winter is fast approaching. The mornings and
evenings are starting to get a bit chilly and I am sure we will be
starting to ‘rug up more’ sooner than you know and put our
heating on to keep warm.
The devastating floods that occurred in March 2021 has impacted
the wider community of Port Macquarie and the surrounding
region. St Agnes’ Catholic Parish is assisting to support members
of our local community that have been affected by the flooding.
Further information is detailed in this edition on what St Agnes’
Catholic Parish has been doing to help those in need.
The Residents Committee Annual General Meeting (AGM) was
held on Thursday, 29th April 2021 with a very good attendance.
Thank you to those residents who attended. A new committee for
2021/2022 has now been elected. Details of the new committee
will be displayed on the noticeboard at the Tenison Woods
Centre in the coming week.
St Agnes’ Village has been home to some flood evacuees over the
past couple of weeks. I would like to thank residents for making
them feel welcome during their temporary short-term stay in the
village.
St Agnes’ Village has had ongoing issues with the Telstra coverage
for many months. The Village Management Office is currently
compiling a survey to be distributed to residents over the coming
week. The survey will capture coverage data and will be provided
to Telstra so they can resolve some of the connectivity challenges
that residents are currently having.
Sunday, 9th May 2021 is Mother’s Day. I would like to wish all the
mothers in the village a very Happy Mother’s Day. I hope you
have a lovely day.
Until next month, stay safe, healthy and happy.

Resident News
Other measures undertaken by St Agnes’ Catholic Parish include the following:-
⬧ The Francis Retreat at Bonny Hills has been re-purposed as an Evacuation Centre for approximately
70 residents from Laurieton and Dunbogan for temporary emergency accommodation.
⬧ The Parish has launched a Pop-Up-Pantry to provide those affected by floods with non-perishable
food, blankets, linen and towels which have been donated by the Parish community.
⬧ Members of our Parish community were involved in cleaning flood-affected residences particularly
at Riverside Residential Village on Hastings River Drive, and Brigadoon Caravan Park in North Haven,
where many residents were left homeless. The Parish is actively working with volunteers, and State
and Local Government agencies to help with the provision of furniture and whitegoods for these
residents.
⬧ The Parish is re-purposing some of its accommodation to help community members who have been
left homeless following the floods.
If you know someone who has been affected by the floods, please visit the Pop-Up Pantry to see how
they can help. Donation of non-perishable grocery items and new bed linen and towels to the Pop-Up
Pantry would be greatly appreciated. Not sure what to donate to the Pop-up Pantry? Here’s a list of
simple staples that are always in demand.

FLOOD RELIEF APPEAL
St Agnes’ Catholic Parish is currently running an appeal to raise funds to
help those affected by the March 2021 floods. By donating to this fund, you
enable our Parish to respond quickly to those in genuine and urgent need.
Any support you can give is deeply appreciated and will make a big
difference to those who are in genuine need. You can donate to our Parish
Appeal (St Agnes’ Catholic Parish Giving) by following the link below:
https://stagnesparish.org.au/giving/appeals/.
MEN’S BBQ - The combined villages men’s BBQ held on Wednesday 28 April 2021 at the Tenison Woods
Centre, St Agnes’ Village was a great success. It was attended by 17 St Agnes’ and Lourdes Village male
residents. Donations received raised $152.00 for the St Agnes’ Parish Pop-Up Pantry, and will be used to
purchase much needed supplies for flood victims.
Samaritan’s Purse – Operation Christmas Child
This organisation was founded by Franklin Graham and has been operating since 1993. Franklin Graham is
the son of Billy Graham the great and well know evangelist. This charity is involved in many ministries.
Samaritan’s Purse has changed the lives of children through Operation Christmas Child since 1993.
Every year, generous people across the world lovingly pack shoe boxes with gifts – simple, yet powerful
messages of God’s unconditional love. And when a child opens a shoe box, they are opening more than a
present lovingly prepared just for them. They are opening up their community to a world of life-changing
opportunities.
Opening up a whole new life is as easy as 1, 2, 3!
1. FIND A SHOEBOX
Find an empty medium-sized
shoe box (approximately
15x27x11cm). Wrap the lid and
box separately in colourful
wrapping paper.
2. BOY OR GIRL?
Determine if a boy or girl will
receive your gift. Select the age of
the child who will receive your box,
and stick a label on your box lid.
Include a special note for your child
in the box. Ages varying from 2-4,
5-9 and 10-14.
3. FILL WITH GIFTS
Fill the box with a variety of
simple gifts that will bring
delight to a child. Please make
sure the packaging from each
gift you give is removed.
Something to wear: T-shirt, shorts, underwear, cap, beanie, sandals, etc.
Some things for school: Exercise book, pencil case, pens, pencils, colouring pencils, sharpener, eraser,
chalk, etc.
Something to love: Teddy bear, doll, soft toy, etc.
Something to play with: Tennis ball, cars, skipping rope, marbles, musical instrument, yo-yo, slinky, finger
puppets, wind-up torch, etc.
Something special: Carry bag, sunglasses, bangles, stickers, necklaces, craft kits, a personal note, a photo
of yourself, etc.
Something for personal hygiene: Soap and face washer, toothbrush, hairbrush, comb, scrunchies, hair-
clips, etc.
MINI BLACKBOARDS – GOOD SAMARITAN’S PURSE
The mini blackboards which St Agnes’ Village resident, Barry Johnson has been making for the poor
children overseas, have been completed. Barry presented the mini blackboards to St Agnes’ Village
resident, Astrid Woodbine to provide to St Thomas’ Church for the Good Samaritan’s Purse charity who
send shoe boxes of gifts to poor children in places like Cambodia, Madagascar and other overseas
countries. Photos shown below.
Knitted beanies and teddy bears are popular items to be placed in the shoebox. If you are interested in
knitting one of these, a pattern for Little Teddy and a Lady’s Knitted Cap is available from the Village
Office.
NATIONAL SHOE BOX COLLECTON
OCTOBER 1ST – 25TH. Village residents are invited to participate in this fantastic ministry. We would like
residents to get together in the Tenison Woods Centre in the next few months, to put together the items
in shoe boxes, ready for donating. We would love for residents to take control of this good cause. If you
would be interested in volunteering your time to be responsible for this, please contact the Village Office
on 6584 3515 to express your interest. Further information on this ministry can also be obtained by
contacting the Village Office and will be included in future newsletters.
ST AGOSTINA CAFÉ
St Agostina Café will be closed until further notice to
enable modifications to be made to the café.
Construction works will be carried out by Paul Jones
Custom Homes & Renovations. The modifications to
weather-proof the café will ensure protection from
the elements for all patrons.
Improved Communication – The Whispir Platform
As noted in previous communication to village residents, the Village Management Office team have
been working with Telstra and St Agnes’ Catholic Parish IT Team on using a communication platform
called Whispir. Whispir is a communication tool that organisations use to improve their communications
and ensure people receive timely, useful, and actionable content. This can be delivered via email and
SMS messaging.
Whispir is now ready to use in the Village Management Office. On Friday 30 April 2021, a majority of
village residents received a ‘Welcome’ message, either via SMS (text messaging) and/or email. The
sender name of the message is St Agnes, therefore village residents can be assured this is not a scam
message. ** Please DO NOT REPLY to the SMS messages and emails received through the Whispir
platform**
Further correspondence will be forthcoming to residents on the Whispir platform. If you have any
questions, please phone the Village Management Office on telephone
6584 3515.
JUSTICE OF THE PEACE
Village residents were advised in the February 2021 village newsletter, that we were lucky enough to
have a Justice of the Peace living in St Agnes’ Village who was available to sign documents.
Unfortunately, the resident no longer holds a JP licence, and therefore, we do not have a Justice of
the Peace in either of our villages.
SOCIAL COMMITTEE ASSISTANCE
We are asking anyone in the village who
would assist the Social Committee setting
up trestle tables for Social Committee
functions. Please phone the Village Office
on 6584 3515 to put your name on the list.
Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
Reminder to Residents
REQUEST FOR ADDITIONS IN VILLAS
Any additions, which includes screen
doors, air conditioning units, ceiling
fans, grab rails, patios etc, must be
approved by Village Management
prior to work being undertaken. Please
provide a written request to the
Village Manager. A written response
will then be provided to you.
REPAIRS AND MAINTENANCE
For all general maintenance requests and after
hours’ emergency maintenance requests, village
residents can call the hotline on 1300 522 511 or
email the details to [email protected] (24 hours a day
7 days a week). When calling after hours or on a
weekend, please stay on the phone to listen to the
procedure. DO NOT HANG UP! If life or structure is
in danger, call triple zero (000).
concentration of food and birds in large numbers in one place. Bird seed left out
in damp conditions rots, grows mould and introduces disease to the birds and can attract rats and
mice as some village residents have found to their horror. Feeding encourages birds to become
dependent on humans for their survival. The Village has an abundance of native shrubs for wild
birds to feed.
HOSPITAL BAG
Residents are reminded that it is a good idea to have a hospital bag packed
should you ever need to go to hospital unexpectedly. In the event you are
transported to hospital, all the necessary items are already in the bag ready to
go. This bag would contain items such as:
❖ a photocopy of your Medicare and Pension Cards; ❖ your unit key; ❖ a list of medication;
❖ pyjamas; ❖ toiletries; and ❖ a photocopy of an Advanced Care Directive (if you have one).
An Advanced Care Directive is a document that sets out your directions including your wishes and
values that need to be considered before medical treatment decisions are made on your behalf.
At some point in your life, there may come a time when you are unable to make your own
decision. This form is available from the Village Office.

Residents are reminded to not feed wild birds, including crows. This creates
many unseen problems such as malnutrition and disease. They are also likely to
become pests. Feeding native birds in our garden can spread disease through a
Information Technology (Computer) Group: THURSDAY MORNING - CHANGE TO APPOINTMENT ONLY
Due to the recent lack of weekly attendance, the decision has been made by the facilitator David Burr,
to change to appointment only. Please phone the Village Office on 6584 3515 to make a booking.
VILLAGE TRANSPORT SERVICES
Residents are reminded that the Village Transport Service is available on Monday and Friday mornings
from 9:30am until 1:00pm. The transport vehicle is driven by volunteers from St Agnes’ Catholic Parish.
At least 24 hours’ notice must be given to book the transport vehicle and bookings can be made via the
Village Office on 6584 3515. To date, we have not had a large response with village residents utilising this
service. I believe this has been due to the Village Transport Service currently only available on two half
mornings.
Discussions are currently taking place to increase the Village Transport Service to 5 days per week. This
will give village residents more availability to utilise the Village Transport Service for their transport
requirements. I encourage village residents to utilise the Village Transport Service for this service to
continue into the future. This service is also available to residents who drive. Further information will be
forthcoming to village residents. If you require further information regarding Village Transport Services,
please phone the Village Office on 6584 3515.
Volunteers Needed Village Transport Services
St Agnes’ & Lourdes Villages
Our village transport program is expanding to five days a week (date yet to be determined), which means
we need more volunteers! In this flexible role, you will be assisting with the lifestyle and wellbeing of
residents by providing transport to and from Parish events and external appointments. The role will
require you to have a valid licence, be able to demonstrate the safe use of a motor vehicle and
occasionally assist with the manual handling of mobility devices.
How to Register Your Interest Please contact the Volunteer Coordinator on 02 6588 7444 or register your interest online https://stagnesparish.org.au/volunteers/
WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT
Residents are encouraged to report any odour from the Wastewater Treatment Plant on Ocean
Drive Port Macquarie, to the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) hotline number on telephone
131 555. Reporting any odours will enable the EPA and Port Macquarie Hastings Council to work
together to address these concerns.
Contributions to the ‘Village Newsletter’ are always welcome! Please deliver any
news, details of events and photos to the Village Management Office or email to

MACULA MONTH (1-31 MAY)
May is Macula Month, our annual awareness campaign to help Australians understand their risk of
macular diseases. When you understand your risk, and know what to do, you can take early action that
could save your sight. The 2021 Macula Month will be extra special. We are celebrating the 20th
anniversary of Macular Disease Foundation Australia (MDFA).
This May, we will focus on Check My Macula. Check My Macula is a short online quiz that reveals your
individual risk factors for macular disease in less than a minute and help you learn what to do. Doing
the quiz takes just 60 seconds – 60 seconds that could save your sight. With tens of thousands already
taking the quiz, Check My Macula is a hugely successful tool to educate people over 50 about their
risks of macular disease. And, of course, to encourage them to have regular eye exams. Please do the
quiz. If you are already living with macular disease, please share the link with your family and friends
this Macula Month.
How’s your macula?
Macular disease can affect anyone, at any age. The most common macular disease is age-related
macular degeneration (AMD). It is responsible for 50 per cent of blindness in Australia. Diabetic eye
disease, which can also affect the macula, is the number one cause of preventable blindness in
working-age Australians. You can have early signs of these or other macular diseases without knowing.
The only way to accurately diagnose macular disease is by visiting your eye health professional – an
optometrist or ophthalmologist. But you can learn about your risk. Early action saves sight, so start the
quiz!
While research to find a cure is continuing, we do know that a few simple changes in lifestyle and diet
can help support macular health. Don’t smoke; get regular exercise; eat a healthy, well-balanced diet;
simple steps that are good for general wellbeing as well as eye health. But many of us struggle for
ideas to incorporate enough eye-healthy foods into our everyday diet so MDFA have put together
some of their favourite recipes that are both delicious and will also help to keep your eyes healthy.
The MACULAR MENU E-COOKBOOK Recipes to help you eat for eye health (August 2020) is available to
download on the MDFA website. You can learn more about macular disease, prevention and early
detection on MDFA’s website: https://wwwmdfoundation.com.au or by calling MDFA’s National
Helpline on 1800 111 709.
POEM
This poem was inspired by the photo taken in the front garden of Barbara’s villa
The Web and the Rain
Woven from the spider’s own spiral silk to the intricate pattern - a gift from his ancestors - the web’s vertical lattice stretches over a metre between a lime tree and a Kumquat. Its creator the spider hides under a leaf he watches his trap waiting for the prey his venom ready to kill it but there is no food in his web only the droplets of rain caught by the sticky capturing silk hang in the diamond necklaces - Nature’s Art installation illuminated by the slanting sunlight
