Good News! Local Abortion Clinic Closes! Praise the Lord!

Twenty years ago, ACU Health Center, the Hinsdale abortion clinic, opened with no fanfare, no sign and no publicity. Inside this nondescript building, abortions were taking place four days a week hurting mothers by destroying babies and up to 17 ½ weeks old. On any given Saturday, as many as 18-20 women stood in line outside the building waiting for it to open. On May 27, 2015, a sign on the front door stated that the abortion clinic is now closed. Beginning in 1996, a small group of about five people would pray and counsel the mothers entering the abortion facility. But this changed in 2008 when the Adoration Chapel at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church in Hinsdale opened and the number of people praying started to double and triple, and then consistently there would be 25-30 people praying every Saturday at 5:30am saying the rosary. Then, two years ago, abortions were limited to Tuesdays only, and this past May they stopped all together. During this time, people also came from all over Chicagoland to pray and counsel at the Hinsdale abortion clinic. The answer to prayer during the last twenty years at the Hinsdale abortion clinic are a message of hope, perseverance, faithfulness, and love. Anything is possible with God! Please continue to pray for the other three clinics owned by this abortionist in our local area: in Glen Ellyn, Downers Grove, and Wood Dale. We rejoice today but also know that our work is not done.

My dear family of St. Andrew the Apostle! “Everything is connected. Concern for the environment thus needs to be joined to a sincere love for our fellow human beings and an unwavering commitment to resolving the problems of society,” wrote Pope Francis in his recent encyclical on Care for our Common Home (no. 91). He stresses that a true ecological approach always becomes a social approach; it must integrate questions of justice in debates on the environment, so as to hear both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor (cf. no. 49). This encyclical of Pope Francis speaks of the many concerns that affect this world we live in, which is our common home. The Eucharist, the Pope reflects, joins heaven and earth: “it embraces and penetrates all creation. The world which came forth from God’s hands returns to him in blessed and undivided adoration: in the bread of the Eucharist, ‘creation is projected towards divinization, towards the holy wedding feast, towards unification with the Creator himself’. Thus, the Eucharist is also a source of light and motivation for our concerns for the environment, directing us to be stewards of all creation” (no. 236). The Eucharist helps us recognize more easily Jesus in a poor person. As our Holy Father states, “When we fail to acknowledge as part of reality the worth of a poor person, a human embryo, a person with disabilities – to offer just a few examples – it becomes difficult to hear the cry of nature itself; everything is connected” (no. 117). Pope Francis’ encyclical letter Laudato Si’ was released last month, in June 2015. The title is taken from the first line of the encyclical, “Laudato Si’, mi Signore,” or “Praise be to you, my Lord.” In the words of this beautiful canticle, Saint Francis of Assisi reminds us that our common home is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us. This encyclical is the latest in a series of social encyclicals written by our popes over the last 125 years, as the Church sought to apply its moral principles and social teaching to emerging economic and social problems. An “encyclical” is a letter that is a teaching document by the Holy Father. A “social encyclical” applies the consistent, traditional moral teachings of the Church to the social and economic challenges of the current day. These social encyclicals shine the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the Church’s moral teaching on changing social circumstances, to provide guidance and support to Christians as we seek to live our faith in the world. In this way, the teaching is both very traditional and ever new. In this recent encyclical, our Holy Father looks at various issues in the light of spiritual and moral realities, including climate change, care for persons in poverty, creating a culture of Solidarity, Encounter and Relationship, protecting human life, to name a few. The universe as a whole shows forth the inexhaustible riches of God. So, whether we are believers or not, the Pope says, “we are agreed today that the earth is essentially a shared inheritance, whose fruits are meant to benefit everyone” (no. 93). “I urgently appeal . . . for a new dialogue about how we are shaping the future of our planet. We need a conversation which includes everyone, since the environmental challenge we are undergoing, and its human roots, concern and affect us all.” (no. 14) As a matter of fact, “Disregard for the duty to cultivate and maintain a proper relationship with my neighbor, for whose care and custody I am responsible, ruins my relationship with my own self, with others, with God and with the earth. When all these relationships are neglected, when justice no longer dwells in the land, the Bible tells us that life itself is endangered” (no. 70). My dear brothers and sisters, may we continue freely to bear witness to the truth of God’s love by our words and actions! In the loving Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Fr. Gregor

FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST

Mark’s Gospel account today is built on a double as-tonishment or amazement: the neighbors and family of Je-sus are astonished that he taught in the synagogue with wisdom and worked powerful signs. Jesus, in turn, is amazed that they have no faith in him because they know his origins, not because of any fault with his teaching or ministry. As with many of Mark’s passages, we get a rather intimate glimpse here of the human part of Jesus’ two‑fold nature. To reinforce his point, Mark tells of Jesus’ return to his native place, and further points out that he is in the midst of his own family members there. From the very people he expected the most, Jesus received the least. In the day of the Gospel’s writing, Mark was attempting to illustrate a lesson to the house of Israel: the God of the covenant expected the greatest faith from the house of Israel, but often received the least. This is a good source for reflection on our part, we who are Jesus’ followers today. For the wisdom of Christ to continue and for our lives to be seen as signs of his power, he must expect and be able to find great faith among us. Will he? Can he? Does he? Or is he, once again, amazed by its absence? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

GRANT ETERNAL REST, LIGHT AND PEACE TO ALL FAITHFUL DEPARTED: Ralph Schweihs

Please call the parish office by Monday at (815) 886-4165 for the name of your loved one to be placed for 3 weeks on our short term prayer list. Also, please call the parish office, if you are hospitalized and would like a visit from our hospital minis-try team or homebound and in need of communion.

Hospital Visitation of Parishioners

Please remember that if you or any family members find yourselves in a hospital, be sure to let them know you are a parishioner at St. Andrew’s — it doesn’t hurt to say it a few times, either! Whenever we priests, deacons or Eucharistic Ministers come to visit, we check the hospital list of parishioners printed under “St. Andrew.” But if you’re not listed as a parishioner of St. Andrew, we won’t know you’re even there! We do not want to miss you! You can always call us, too, at the office, ext. 301. Thank you. May the Lord Jesus be with you all your days, to love and be loved by Him, to honor and serve Him, as He honors and serves us!

A COMMUNITY OF WORD AND SACRAMENT

SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION

CATECHUMENATE The Catechumenate is a community which gathers those adults who have not been baptized, and seek deeper insight into the Christian faith.

BAPTISM OF CHILDREN We joyfully celebrate the baptism of children of Christian households which are joined to our weekly worship, and have active registration in our parish community for at least 3 months. After registration in the parish, please attend an Evening of Awareness, if you have not attended a class in the past two years, to register for Baptism and select a date. Classes are presented on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Baptism is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.

EUCHARIST AND CONFIRMATION Formation for those coming first to the table of the Lord as children is infused into the efforts of our school and Faith Formation Office. Confirmation formation is a two year process completed in eighth grade. Please call the Faith Formation Office for more information.

SACRAMENTS OF COMMITMENT MARRIAGE Marriage preparation is a six month process of prayer, reflection and study. Couples work with both the presider and a sponsor couple through this process. Please note that this six month period of preparation is essential.

ORDERS Those seeking assistance in discerning a call to ordained ministry are encouraged to call the parish offices.

SACRAMENTS OF HEALING RECONCILIATION Reconciliation is available each Saturday afternoon, Wednesday evening 5:30-7:00pm, through seasonal communal services, and by appointment.

ANOINTING Anointing of the Sick is offered through seasonal services, and always by request. If hospitalized, please immediately seek anointing from the Catholic chaplain.
