    CHRISTMAS

A young mother, her eyes shining with fatigue, who is arranging her hair; a father who finds himself along with his pretty wife and baby, straightening the stable to make himself useful in some way; shepherds who bring cheese and perhaps also some curdled milk; sheep who look at their shepherds while bleating; a donkey who is eyeing his manger changed into a cradle; an adorable swaddled baby whom on calls Savior, Christ and Lord: This is the manifestation of the goodness and the tenderness of God. This is the most fantastic birth in the history of humanity, the one who changed the face of the world! This is how far God humbled and compromised himself with us! This is Emmanuel! --From God’s Word Is Our Joy, Vol. 1 by Lucien Deiss, CSSp, copyright 1998, World Library Publications, page 73.

A CHRISTMAS PRAYER FOR WORLD HEALTH

Come, Lord Jesus, Prince of Peace and Beloved Savior, come into our hearts this unique Christmas Season of 2020 and fill us with Your gifts of love and joy. With You, we seek refuge during this Coronavirus Pandemic. With Mary and Joseph, we rejoice and thank You. With the Angels and saints in heave we sing “Peace on Earth”. Continue to unite all people in peace and shed Your light of understanding and faith upon this World, as we cope with this pandemic. With the Magi and the Shepherds, we bow before You with hearts full of wonder. Help us to follow you faithfully and to share the Good News of your coming. With You, we ask Your protection of our families, our nation and the world against this virus, please restrain our fears and anxiety. Grant that health, the fruit of life, may reign throughout the world. —Amen

    THE ETERNAL GOD

King David wished that the ark of God might have a more permanent home. David may have envisioned something like the cedar palace where he resided. God had in mind something more: a throne where David’s descendants would rule for ever, a kingdom where Jews and Gentiles alike would be welcome. Mary’s prayerful nature led to an even more disturbing message. She would conceive and bear a Son though she was not yet married. “How can this come about?” Mary wondered. “The Holy Spirit will come upon you,” she was told (Luke 1:35). Mary’s acceptance of this difficult challenge ushered in this, the final age of God’s reign. What was once a secret known only by chosen people like King David and his descendants must now be made clear to all so that, as Saint Paul wrote to the Romans, we can be brought to the “obedience of faith” “according to the command of the eternal God” (Romans 16:26). Advent Prayer

    Lord Jesus,

Master of both the light and the darkness, send your Holy Spirit upon our preparation for Christmas.

We who have so much to do seek quiet spaces to hear

    your voice each day.

We who are anxious over many things look forward to your coming among us.

We who are blessed in so many ways long for the

    complete joy of your kingdom.

We whose hearts are heavy seek the joy of your presence.

We are your people, walking in darkness, yet seeking the light.

To you we say, “Come Lord Jesus!”

    Amen.

The Legend of the Christmas Candy Cane

To celebrate Christmas, a candy maker decided to make a candy that would include several symbols of the life of Jesus Christ, so he made the Christmas Candy Cane. He began with a stick of pure white, solid candy; white to symbolize the Virgin Birth and solid to symbolize the firm love Jesus has for all of us. The candy maker made the candy in the shape of a “J” to represent the precious name of Jesus. Thinking that the candy as somewhat plain, the candy maker added red stripes. He used three small stripes to rep-resent the nails that held Jesus on the cross and a large stripe to show the blood shed by Jesus, giving us the prom-ise of eternal life. Then he added the wonderful flavor of peppermint, which is a royal gift of spice. So perhaps the next time you look at this familiar Christmas decoration you will remember the candy maker and the real meaning behind the Christmas Candy Cane; The Wondrous

Birth of Jesus and His Great Love for all of us.

FEAST OF FAITH Gathering When Pope Benedict XVI visited the United States in 2008, tens of thousands gathered in Yankee Stadium to celebrate the Eucharist with him. What made them different from all the other excited crowds who have assembled there through the years? When they began to sing together, to listen together, to pray together, they ceased to be a crowd, and became a liturgical assembly. It was not where they were but what they did that set them apart. The Gospels speak of many instances when Jesus prayed alone to his Father. But Jesus also put a special value on communal prayer. “Where two or three are gathered together in my name,” he told his disciples, “there am I in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:20). Je-sus gave his own mission to his followers, sending them forth to do everything he did: to heal, to teach, to pro-claim the kingdom. Jesus wants us to meet God in and through each other. So the Christian community contin-ues to gather, Sunday after Sunday. When we get up on Sunday morning and come to Mass, we respond to Je-sus’ invitation, and we express our trust in his promise that whenever we come together, he comes, too. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J.
