REMEMBER THAT NOVEMBER IS THE MONTH OF THE HOLY SOULS IN PURGATORY! ADVENT VESPERS Today being the feast of Christ the King, the last of the Sundays of the Year of Grace 2016 (i.e., the liturgical year 2016), next Sunday will be the First Sunday of Advent and the beginning of the Year of Grace 2017 (i.e., the liturgical year 2017). Last year, we re-instituted a beautiful and traditional prac-tice, namely, the solemn celebration of the Church’s official Evening Prayer (a.k.a., “Vespers”) on the evenings of its four Sundays. It is a practice we will continue until it becomes an anticipated tradition (a status that I believe it will achieve by next year!). It’s a marvelous way to keep Advent as the discrete and holy season that it is; holy-because it is the time for preparation and re-prioritization for Christ’s arrival, and discrete-because it is definitely not Christmas and has its own wonderful traditions that are not part of any other season. Attending Vespers as a family is also a magnificent way to keep the sea-son and provide the kids with another cherished memory of their childhood. They will be celebrated each Sunday night of Advent (Nov. 27 & Dec. 4, 11, & 18) at 7:00PM. Spread the word! LET US GIVE THANKS TO THE LORD OUR GOD! Our much-favored land has much for which to be grateful, and so our Novena of Thanksgiving continues every evening at 6:00 in church until Thanksgiving Day. Speaking of which, we will once again have our traditional pot-luck Thanksgiving Day brunch after the 9:00AM Mass (which will be the only Mass that day). At that Mass, we will distribute the blessed Thanksgiving Table Bread and there will be a special, retro-offertory procession, in which everybody comes forward at offertory time, toting their gifts of non-perishable food items and/or money for the poor (via the Holy Vincentians of our St. Vincent de Paul Society). (I call it “retro” because that’s how it was done at every Mass in the Church’s dawning days; the collection baskets were a later innovation.) Come join the rest of your par-ish family at the altar-table and the breakfast table in thanksgiving to the God who has blessed us so prodigiously! BEYOND SUNDAY The response of our parish has been overwhelming! As of right now, we have pledges and receipts for this mega-collection that amount to $333,000 (40% of which comes back to us and will be used to help finance our kids’ tuition at whatever Catholic schools they attend; I hope to be able to help our parishioners who attend Catholic high school as well, but I can’t commit to that until the school situa-tion here in North County is clarified). QUIZ-A-CATHOLIC Being as this is the end of the Year of Grace 2016 and the day (Christ the King) when we look forward to the end times, let’s see how much you know about the things that are to come: 1. What are the traditional “four last things”? 2. What is the theological term about the end of the world literally means “the end times”? 3. According to Revelation, Philippians & Daniel, where is found the names of the saved? 4. What fancy word for Jesus’ Second Coming is found in Revelation? 5. What are the two judgments that we face? 6. Revelation speaks of a “First Resurrection”; what is it? CONTINUED

The 2016 Free Thanksgiving Dinner
St. Ferdinand continues a tradition of over 17 years - free Thanksgiving dinner. Many area churches support the dinner. Food served is pur-chased through donations. It’s free! November 24th, from 11:30 am until 1:30 pm Questions?
7. It also speaks of a “Second Death”; what is that? 8. There are many terms for hell in Scripture; see how many you can name. 9. The righteous of the Old Testament could not go to heaven when they died; where did they go? 10. There will be a battle in which the forces of evil will be decisively trounced; where will that take place? ANSWERS: Death, judgment, heaven and hell 2. escha-ton (the study of which is called “eschatology”) 3. In the “Book of the Living” 4. Parousia 5. first, the particular judgments each one of us has to undergo individually im-mediately upon our death and, second, the general judg-ment of the entire universe at the end time 6. the risen-life experience of the saints after their particular judgment 7. when all the damned go there eternally after the general judgment 8. the abyss, hades, sheol, gehenna, “fiery pool of sulphur”, the pit (and there are others not so well known) 9. limbo (sometimes called the “Bosom of Abra-ham”) 10. in the valley of Megiddo, known in Hebrew as Armageddon
QUOTES OF THE WEEK
“Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that re-quires every citizen to prove they are (sic) in-sured…but not everyone must prove they are (sic) a citizen…And now, any of those who refuse or are unable to prove they are citizens will receive free insurance from those who are forced to buy insurance because they are citizens!” – Ben Stein

Many of you asked me last weekend if we heard anything about our school. The principals had a meeting on last Thursday and we were told that there is a new deadline. We should hear some-thing by the end of November or the beginning of December???
Our Speech Team came away with a great show-ing at their first Speech Meet. Jeremiah King earned a gold ribbon; Lauren Garrett, Halla Jones, Brianna DuMaine, all earned a Blue Rib-bon; Kylie Stewart, Nadia Allar and Kamryn Ure came away with Red Ribbons. We congrat-ulate our team and we thank Jessica Potter and Megan Behm for being great speech coaches.
We thank each of you for your prayers and fi-nancial support for our school. Thanks also for purchasing a candy bar from the students outside of Church. We have saints adoring our doors celebrating the month of November. Each room created their door with pictures and important facts about the life of a saint.
May we each continue to grow in the love of God and share this love with each other. God is Good!
St. Vincent de Paul Society
We hope everyone enjoyed the donut social after the Masses on St. Vincent de Paul Sunday last week. We enjoyed visiting with you and hope that some of you will join us. The collection at the Mass on Thanksgiving will be for the St. Vincent de Paul Society. As the weather gets colder we will have many calls regarding gas disconnection and we rely on your donations to give assistance. Next weekend we will put the Advent Giving Tree in the Church foyer. Please take an ornament from the tree to donate new and unwrapped toys, clothes (infant, children’s and adult), shoes plus bed and bath linens. Look for all the great holiday sales! We will be col-lecting until Dec. 18th. The SVDP Society at St. Angela Merici wishes everyone a Blessed Thanksgiving!

The Novena is being held at 6pm each evening in our church beginning from Wednesday, Nov. 16 and ending on Thanksgiving Day following the 9am Mass. Please join us!
The St. Patrick’s Center in St. Louis thanks St. Angela Merici Parish for its generous contribution of casseroles to feed the homeless. WE NEED YOU for 2017!!
For over 30 years a generous core of (mostly anonymous) St. Angela Merici parishioners have partici-pated in providing Casserole Dishes to homeless and hungry residents of St Louis City. At the St Pat-rick Center the need is great – and the gratitude sincere. We would love to increase the number of par-ticipants in this program and will be delighted to accept contributors at any level of commitment you can manage. If you can make both recipes for the scheduled dates or one or the other….WE APPRE-CIATE YOUR HELP!
The St. Patrick’s Center supplies the casserole pans to us. The calculated cost to you per Casserole is probably in the range of $12 - $15, shopping time and about 2 hours in the kitchen, is all it takes! Simple Recipes are provided in the Lunchroom, or call Paddy Vytlacil at 355-5897.
