It’s the season for auction parties. I’ll write more about the auction later, but for now I would like to thank you! Thank you to all the families who have orga-nized these pre-auction parties to help underwrite the cost of the auc-tion. Thank you to all of you who attend and give so generously to the school. As I attend each of them, I hear wonderful feedback about our teachers and our school. At one party, a parent called out to me, “Is that our proud princi-pal?!” Although I think it was said jokingly, I wanted to respond, “Yes!” My wife Ellen and I have worked in many different schools over our almost twenty years in education. When it came time to choose a school for our children, it was done thoughtfully and intentionally. St. Ann has met and exceeded our ex-pectations and I consider it an honor and a blessing to be able to now lead this school. Here are just three facts about our school that make me so proud to be the prin-cipal of St. Ann Catholic School:

Feedback from both new teachers and new families to the community is resoundingly that although there were many great school options both for employment and for education, St. Ann stood out as the best fit. Our continued commitment to staying up to date with best educational practice and to preparing students for their future, has inspired the one to one laptop initiative for the 7th and 8th graders; expanded access in the classroom to iPads for all grades; the use of Google Classroom all the way through third grade; and the development of our computer and technology program. Our enrollment has stayed relatively steady over the last three years despite the fact that many of our surrounding Catholic Schools have strug-gled with enrollment. Look for more reasons I am proud of St. Ann in my upcoming newsletters, but feel free to send me an email telling me about some of the reasons you are proud to be a member of the St. Ann Community.

Grades K-2: Please help your children access websites using a mouse. The skills of moving the cursor to the correct spot on the screen and clicking the left mouse button are new in Kindergarten and take time to develop.

Grades 3-8: Your students all have a Typing.com login (a paper was sent home with the login details this week). We will be working on this site in class each week for the first 10-15 minutes. Each grade level has lessons assigned each quarter and each lesson is worth 10 points. We will be taking one-minute timed tests at Typing.com peri-odically and watching their progress throughout the year. If they're bored, this is a great site to spend time on.

Mrs. Kropf's homeroom has chosen Grace Meyer as our Christian Leader of the Week. Grace is a joy to have around each and every day. Her smile lights up the halls and room each morning. She is a hard worker who is always willing to help others. She perseveres through difficult times with a positive attitude and approaches every-thing she does with energy and a willing spirit. She listens to others and is a great role model for those around her. Grace lives Jesus' message of love and kindness and models how to behave in a Christ-like way. We are so blessed to have Grace as a friend and fellow student.

WELCOME NATALIE DALPE

Hello! I am Natalie Dalpe, the new Middle School Social Studies teacher. This is my fourth full year of teaching, but my first at St. Ann Catholic School. I originally grew up in the Lenexa area, and attended Holy Trinity Catholic School, and then St. Thomas Aquinas High School. I moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma to attend the University of Tulsa. After graduating in 2013 with my BA in History Education, I began working at Union High School, one of the largest public high schools in Tulsa, Oklahoma as a United States History teacher. I taught all levels of US History there, including English Language Learner US History and Advanced Placement US History. I am AP-certified, as well as Pre-AP certified. In my spare time, I love cook-ing, traveling, and spending time with my family. In December 2016, my husband, two cats, and I moved to Overland Park. We are pa-rishioners at Church of the Ascension. I’m excited to get back to the Kansas City area, to get started at St. Ann, and I hope to have an amazing school year!

Hi Everyone! This is my first year at St. Ann and I've so enjoyed getting to know everyone thus far. When I started my career, I was in self-contained elementary classrooms for six years in both Catholic and public schools. I stayed home for the past eight years to raise my daughters while operating my own website development business and my husband's wealth management firm. We are parishioners at Cure' of Ars, where my girls attend school. It has been great to be back in the classroom. Thank you all for the warm welcome!

What are itch mites? Itch mites are microscopic insect-like creatures that cannot be seen by the naked eye. One type, the oak leaf gall mite, is believed to be responsible for outbreaks of human bites in Kansas, Missouri, Ne-braska and Texas. Can people be bitten by itch mites? Yes. Mites usually need about four hours on your body before they bite. Oak leaf gall mites are so small that they can float on the wind, and pass through window or door screens and loosely-woven clothing. How will I know if I have been bitten? You may develop red welts that look like chigger bites on your neck, face, arms and upper body. These bites are not usually on legs where chigger bites may be found. The itch mite welts form into a pimple-like lesion after about 12 hours. The bites are very itchy and can be present for up to two weeks. What should I do if I think I’ve been bitten? Try over-the-counter topical anti-itch creams and oral anti-histamines to control itching.. What can I do to prevent being bitten? When weather permits, keep windows shut from August through October when “mite-showers” can occur. Remove clothing items each day and launder them. Take a warm, soapy shower after coming indoors, especially after gardening, raking leaves or performing other outdoor activities. Can I use DEET or other insect repellent? Since the mites only bite people when they accidentally fall on them, DEET and other insect repel-lents may not work. However, to prevent being bitten by mosquitoes, which can carry West Nile virus, you should use insect repellents with DEET. Can itch mites live in my home? No, in order to survive, itch mites need to feed on insect larvae, which are usually found on the inside of tree leaves. If the mites come from oak trees, should the trees be sprayed or removed? No. Since mites feed on insect larvae that are inside the edge of leaves, chemical sprays are not ef-fective. Removal of trees is not necessary because these mites are not likely to be a problem every year.
