Sunday, February 2, 2020, Presentation of the Lord
“For my eyes have seen your salvation”
"For my eyes have seen Your salvation." (Lk. 2:30) These are the words that echo the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord that we are celebrating today. The events surrounding this special Feast are found in Chapter 2, verses 22 to 40 of the Gospel of Luke. As some of you may be aware, the Feast of the "Presentation of the Lord" in the Temple, al-ways observed on February the second in the Roman Rite, is also known as "Candlemas Day" and the "Purification of the Blessed Virgin."
Today's Gospel Reading (Lk. 2:22-40) is summarized by the words of Simeon. "For my eyes have seen your salva-tion." [Lk. 2:30] When the time had come for the purification of the Virgin Mary in accordance to the Law, Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord God. For it was written, "Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord." As required by the Law, Mary and Joseph offered the sacrifice of a pair of turtle-doves or two young pigeons. (Lk. 2:22-4; Lev. 12:6- 8). At the Temple they met Simeon, a righteous and devout man who longed for the consolation of Israel. (Lk. 2:25) Filled with the Holy Spirit, it had been revealed to Simeon that he would not die until such time as he had seen the Lord's Messiah. (Lk. 2:26).
As we heard earlier, guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the Temple; and when Joseph and Mary brought in the Child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took Jesus in his arms and praised God, saying, Master, now You are dismissing Your servant in peace, according to Your word; for my eyes have seen Your salva-tion, which You have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a Light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to Your people Israel.'" (Lk. 2:27-32). These events confirm to us that Simeon and Anna, both being filled with the Ho-ly Spirit, were chosen by God to meet Jesus and to affirm that He was the promised Messiah. Now both, having met the Lord of their salvation, could go in peace.
Equally, we, as members of the Catholic Church that is led by the Spirit of Christ, have also met in our lives the Lord Jesus, our Redeemer. Therefore, when we depart after the celebration of the Holy Mass, it can be said that we too go in peace.

Another pot luck? Actually two...so read on.
First, to mark the success of the annual Saint Ann Craft Fair, parishioners who worked on the November 15-16 event brought homemade food and desserts to the parish hall on January 24 to eat, drink and celebrate the success of the 2019 fund-raiser.
Chair Vince White reported that more than $14,000 was raised – a 10 percent increase over the 2018 craft fair.
He attributed the success to eager vendors, generous parishioners and a committee of tireless workers, whom Vince said easily comprised the single largest group of volunteers at St. Ann. I was overwhelmed by the experience. Yes, I was impressed by the crowds but – in all my years in ministry – I never saw a more dedicated committee, one filled with such spirit and one that worked so cooperatively.

The spirit was so obvious when we also ate togeth-er before our Christmas concert - so mark your calendars for December 19 when we will have another pot luck on the night of this year's Christmas concert.

Each year during Catholic Schools Week, the New Jersey Conference of Catholic Schools sponsors a special, statewide event to recognize the meaningful accomplish-ments of our schools. This year's event centered on how our elementary schools educate and empower students to grow in awareness and action to demonstrate care for the planet, our resources and God's great creations. Each diocesan school was invited to submit a recent school initiative that embodies this sentiment. All Saints Academy was selected to be the Diocese of Pat-
erson representative at the state level! A team of middle school students, along with our Technology Coordinator, Miss Alpaugh, trav-eled to the New Jersey State House in Tren-ton to present the ASA project to members of our state government. They presented a film synopsis of the ASA recent, school wide
STEM challenge, Food: Let Nothing Be Wasted - John 6:12. Students stud- ied the worldwide dilemma of food waste and proposed options for food waste manage- ment. All grade levels were involved in this concentrated effort which also incorporated Catholic social justice themes. Ad-ditionally, our team had a tour of the State House and met representatives at a luncheon. They participated in a cere-mony recognizing Catholic schools and the positive contri-butions that they provide to our society. This is the second year that ASA has been noted for this special achievement. Congratulations to all of our students and teachers for this wonderful recognition! Celebrate! FEBRUARY
FEBRUARY 2. THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD. Luke 2:22-40. At the time Jesus was born there was a custom that after several weeks mothers and fathers would bring their babies to the Temple (their church) to be presented. Today’s Gospel tells that story. Mary and Joseph bring Jesus to the Temple; while there, they meet Simeon and Anna, who holds Jesus, giving Him a blessing and telling Mary and Joseph how special was. How do you think Mary and Joseph felt when they listened to Anna and Simeon’s words? FEBRUARY 3. Blaise. The physician St. Blaise helped a boy who had a fishbone stuck in his throat. Alt-hough Lent is three weeks away, eat fish for lunch or dinner to recall Blaise’s merciful act. There will be Blessing of throats after all Masses on February 1st, 2nd and 3rd. FEBRUARY 8. Josephine Bakhita. Josephine was a slave who later became a religious sister. Pray for those who are still oppressed and lack freedom.
