Advent is a season of yearning for God to come and set the world right with perfect justice, truth and peace. It is a season of hope. Human beings cannot live without hope, without something to live for, without something to look forward to. Hope is not wishful thinking—that is part of a child’s experience of this season. Instead, hope—in its truest sense—is a deep trust in a better future which is lived out and acted upon in the present. The people of the Old Testament had the courage to hope for big things: that the desert would be turned into fertile land; that the scattered and divided people would eventually be gathered again; that the blind would see, the deaf hear, the lame walk; that not only their own people, but all people of the Earth would be united in the blessings of everlasting peace. We hope for the same things as the Old Testament people, for their hopes are not yet realized. We do, however, differ from them in two ways. First, the coming of Jesus in history, as a partial fulfillment of God’s promises, immeasurably confirms and strengthens our hope. Secondly, we differ from the Old Testament people because Jesus has revealed to us that God is not far off, but is already in our midst. Hence, the importance in the Advent liturgy of John the Baptist and of Mary: Because they recognized the new situation, they serve as models for the Church in discerning the presence of our Savior in the world.

Pastor’s Note: The Advent Season

Announcements

M Pastor

Advent is a time of waiting and expectation; a season of quiet anticipation and preparation.

We are waiting for our Lord to come into the world as the baby Jesus, born of the Virgin Mary

in Bethlehem. We are also preparing for His return, His second coming as the shepherd-king,

to restore harmony and right relationship to all creation. Advent is a season of yearning for

God to come and set the world right with perfect justice, truth and peace. It is a season of

hope. Human beings cannot live without hope, without something to live for, without

something to look forward to. Hope is not wishful thinking—that is part of a child’s experience

of this season. Instead, hope—in its truest sense—is a deep trust in a better future which is

lived out and acted upon in the present.

The people of the Old Testament had the courage to hope for big things: that the desert

would be turned into fertile land; that the scattered and divided people would eventually be

gathered again; that the blind would see, the deaf hear, the lame walk; that not only their

own people, but all people of the Earth would be united in the blessings of everlasting peace.

We hope for the same things as the Old Testament people, for their hopes are not yet

realized. We do, however, differ from them in two ways. First, the coming of Jesus in history,

as a partial fulfillment of God’s promises, immeasurably confirms and strengthens our hope.

Secondly, we differ from the Old Testament people because Jesus has revealed to us that

God is not far off, but is already in our midst. Hence, the importance in the Advent liturgy of

John the Baptist and of Mary: Because they recognized the new situation, they serve as

models for the Church in discerning the presence of our Savior in the world.

Spotlight on Stewardship November 27, 2016 Stewardship Reflection “For you do not know on which day your Lord will

come.” Matthew 24:42

People who have had health issues or near-death

experiences generally have a greater appreciation for

each day being a gift from God. The rest of us usually

take for granted that we will be around tomorrow. But

when you start to look at each day as a gift, you

realize all the little miracles that happen daily and

grow in gratitude for all that we have been given.

St. Anne Community Outreach

St. Anne parishioners are encouraged to donate

toothpaste to St. Anne Community Outreach during

the month of November.
