ONE LORD, ONE FAITH Do you suppose the authors of the four Gospels were aware of today’s first reading from the second book of Kings? Of course they were. The prophet Elisha fed a hundred men with twenty barley loaves in order to prove God’s power. This same miracle, now multiplied by more people fed by fewer loaves, is attributed to Jesus in all four Gospels. In today’s passage from John we even have the detail that the loaves were barley, reminding every pious Jew of that miracle that Elisha worked. Yet Jesus went into hiding when they wanted to make him king. It is the passage from Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians that gives us the reason for this. The power of Jesus comes from God. It is not meant merely to feed us, or to provide one group with a king. There is one Lord, one faith, one God and Father of all who works through Jesus Christ and through us all.

UN SEÑOR, UNA FE ¿Crees que los cuatro evangelistas estaban conscientes de la primera lectura de hoy, tomada del Segundo Libro de los Reyes? Por supuesto que lo estaban. El profeta Eliseo alimentó a 100 hombres con veinte panes de cebada a fin de demostrar el poder de Dios. Este mismo milagro, ahora multiplicado por más personas alimentadas con menos panes, se le atribuye a Jesús en los cuatro Evangelios. En el pasaje de hoy, tomado de Juan, incluso tenemos el detalle de que los panes eran de cebada, recordando a cada judío devoto de aquel milagro que hizo Eliseo. Sin embargo, Jesús se escondió cuando querían hacerlo rey. Es el pasaje de la Carta de Pablo a los Efesios que nos explica por qué. El poder de Jesús viene de Dios. No es simplemente para darnos de comer, o para proporcionarle un rey a un grupo. Hay un solo Señor, una sola fe, un solo Dios y Padre de todos quien obra por medio de Jesucristo y por todos nosotros.

Saints Joachim and Anne, grandparents of Jesus and parents of Mary, we seek your intercession. We beg you to direct all our actions to the greater glory of God and the salvation of souls. Strengthen us when we are tempted, console us during our trials, help us when we are in need, be with us in life and in death.
O Divine Savior, we thank You for having chosen Saints Joachim and Anne to be the parents of our Blessed Mother Mary and so to be your beloved grandparents. We place ourselves under their patronage this day. We recommend to them our families, our children, and our grandchildren. Keep them from all spiritual and physical harm. Grant that they may ever grow in greater love of God and others.
Saints Joachim and Anne, we have many great needs. We beg you to intercede for us before the throne of your Divine Grandson. All of us here have our special intentions, our own special needs, and we pray that through your intercession our prayers may be granted. Amen.

Part 1 – Naming the Liturgy During the course of the pandemic, many people discovered a newfound appreciation for the Holy Mass. Others, broken out of their habits of practice, might find it harder to go to Church each Sunday. We have known for many years that there are a great number of people who consider themselves Catholic, but don’t walk through the doors of a church more than a couple times a year, if that. It is often said that if people truly knew what Mass was, they would be breaking down the doors to get in! Even among those who attend regularly, there are times that we are dragged down to earth rather than being lifted up to heaven; perhaps the preaching or the music aren’t the best they could be. Maybe the rite of the Mass isn’t followed as well as it should be. We all could use reflection on what we are doing and why we are doing it, because from the point of view of our Catholic faith, the Mass is objectively the most important thing we could be doing. To begin our journey through the Mass, it would be good to start by looking at what we call it. The Mass has many names, which is fitting for its divine reality, which cannot be sufficiently expressed by just a few human words. Some of the most common are: Holy Mass, the Eucharist, the Lord’s Supper, the Divine Liturgy, and the Holy Sacrifice or Offering. We’ll leave the name we use most often (Mass) for last, since it is rather interesting.
The Eucharist Eucharist comes from Greek, meaning “Thanksgiving”. As the Catechism puts it, “The Eucharist is a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the Father, a blessing by which the Church expresses her gratitude to God for all his benefits, for all that he has accomplished through creation, redemption, and sanctification.” (1360).
The Lord’s Supper The Church throughout the ages has never ceased to celebrate the Eucharist, because she must be faithful to the Lord’s
command- “Do this in memory of me.” We call it the Lord’s Supper “because of its connection with the supper which the Lord took with his disciples on the eve of his Passion and because it anticipates the wedding feast of the Lamb in the heavenly Jerusalem.” (CCC 1329). It is a sacred meal, where Jesus offers his very Body and Blood to us: “For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink (Jn 6:55).
The Divine Liturgy Liturgy comes from a Greek word which was often used to describe a public work, a work done on behalf of the people. The center of the Mass is Christ’s redeeming work as High Priest of the New Covenant (see the Letter to the Hebrews, chapters 4-10) reconciling humanity with God, which we are able to participate in on behalf of the world, because of our status as members of Christ’s Body.
The Holy Sacrifice While the Mass is a meal, it is not any ordinary meal; it is a sacrificial meal. In the Mass the once-for-all sacrifice of Christ is mysteriously made present to us through the power of the Holy Spirit. Through our incorporation into Christ, this sacrifice also includes the Church’s offering, our giving of ourselves, represented in the bread and wine which are given to become the Body and Blood of the Lord.
Holy Mass The word Mass comes from the last phrase of the liturgy in Latin: Ite, missa est, which means, literally, “Go, it’s the dismissal!” What an odd name for the whole thing! But it expresses an important truth: the mystery of salvation not only includes the sacrifice, but also the being sent. Jesus, before his ascension, sent the apostles into the world to announce the Good News. We are similarly sent to share what Christ has done that all may come to share in his redemption.

Otros, que han perdido sus prácticas de costumbres pueden tener más dificultades para ir a la Iglesia todos los domingos. Sabemos desde hace muchos años que hay una gran cantidad de personas que se consideran católicas, pero no atraviesan las puertas de una iglesia más de un par de veces al año, si es que eso. A menudo se dice que si la gente realmente supiera lo que es la Misa ¡rompieran las puertas para entrar! Incluso entre los que asisten con regularidad, hay ocasiones en las que somos arrastrados por tierra en lugar de ser elevados al cielo; quizás la predicación o la música no sean de lo mejor. Quizás el rito de la Misa no se sigue tan bien como se debería. A todos nos vendría bien el reflexionar sobre lo que estamos haciendo y el por qué lo hacemos, porque desde el punto de vista de nuestra fe católica, la Misa es objetivamente lo más importante que podríamos estar haciendo. Para comenzar nuestro viaje a través de la Misa, sería bueno comenzar mirando como la llamamos. La Misa tiene muchos nombres, lo que corresponde a su realidad divina, que no puede expresarse suficientemente con unas pocas palabras humanas. Algunos de los más comunes son: La Santa Misa, La Eucaristía, La Cena del Señor, La Liturgia Divina y el santo sacrificio u Ofrenda. Dejaremos el nombre que usamos con más frecuencia (Misa) para el final, ya que es bastante interesante.
La Eucaristía La palabra Eucaristía proviene del griego, que significa “Acción de Gracias”. Como dice el Catecismo, “La Eucaristía es un sacrificio de acción de gracias al Padre, una bendición por la cual la Iglesia expresa su reconocimiento a Dios por todos sus beneficios, por todo lo que ha realizado mediante la creación, la redención y la santificación.” (1360).
La Cena del Señor La Iglesia a lo largo de los siglos nunca ha dejado de celebrar la Eucaristía, porque tiene que ser fiel al mandato del Señor: "Haced esto en memoria mía”. La llamamos la Cena del señor
“porque se trata de la Cena que el Señor celebro con sus discípulos la víspera de su pasión y de la anticipación del banquete de bodas del Cordero (cf. Ap. 19,9) en la Jerusalén celestial”. (CCC 1329). Es una Comida sagrada, donde Jesús nos ofrece su mismo Cuerpo y Sangre: “Porque mi carne es verdadera comida y mi sangre es verdadera bebida (Jn 6:55).
La Liturgia Divina Liturgia proviene de una palabra griega que se usaba a menudo para describir una obra pública, una obra realizada en nombre del pueblo. El centro de la Misa es la obra redentora de Cristo como Sumo Sacerdote de la Nueva Alianza (ver la carta a los Hebreos, capítulos 4-10) reconciliando a la humanidad con Dios, en la cual podemos participar en nombre del mundo, debido a nuestro estado como miembros del Cuerpo de Cristo.
El Santo Sacrificio Si bien la Misa es una comida, no es una comida cualquiera; es una comida de sacrificio. En la Misa, el Sacrificio de una vez por todas de cristo se nos hace presente misteriosamente a través del poder del Espíritu Santo. A través de nuestra incorporación a Cristo, este sacrificio incluye también la ofrenda de la Iglesia, nuestra entrega de nosotros mismos, representados en el pan y el vino que se dan para convertirse en Cuerpo y Sangre del Señor.
Santa Misa La palabra Misa proviene de la última frase de la liturgia en latín: Ite, missa est, que significa literalmente, “¡Ve, es la despedida!” ¡Que nombre tan extraño para todo esto! Pero expresa una verdad importante: el misterio de la salvación no solo incluye el sacrificio, sino también el ser enviado. Jesús, antes de su ascensión, envío a los apóstoles al mundo para anunciar la Buena Nueva. De manera similar, somos enviados a compartir lo que cristo ha hecho para que todos puedan participar de su redención.
