READINGS FOR THE WEEK
LIVING the
WORD
LIVING the
WORD
THIS WEEK’S FOCUS: BEHIND US ALL THE WAY
The Holy Trinity is bound together in a relationship of love, and that love also binds us to the Trinity. Our mission is to let that love be the bond of relationship we have with one another. FIRST READING Before anything was created, the wisdom of God was brought forth (Proverbs 8:22-31). In the earliest days of Israel, wisdom was a collection of simple folk sayings that taught one how to live the good life. This chapter was written later, after the Greeks had conquered the Middle East under Alexander the Great. The people began to think of God in Greek terms, that God was far removed from everyday events. When this happened, the religious leaders realized that the people needed some way to know that God cared for them. They spoke of intermediaries who brought us God’s revelation and carried our prayers to God, and included: God’s glory, God’s Spirit, and God’s holiness. The greatest of these was Wisdom. Next week we hear a hymn of how Wisdom accompanied God on the day of creation and served Him as an architect in His work. The idea of Wisdom gave the Israelites many of the concepts that would help them understand the Trinity when that idea was revealed. SECOND READING God's love has poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us (Romans 5:1-5). This reading speaks of our dignity. We have been justified through faith. Justification means that we are at peace
with God. Jesus gave us the opportunity to find that peace through His death on the Cross and Resurrection. We must trust in Him (this is the meaning of the phrase “to have faith”). Yet, there is still suffering in our lives. Normally, suffering makes one feel abandoned. This is not the case with us, for we have received the gift of the Holy Spirit and the Spirit fills us with joy when we suffer (for we realize that God’s love can be seen in us when we suffer with trust). GOSPEL Everything the Father has is Mine; the Spirit will take from what is Mine and declare it to you (John 16:12-15). This passage is taken from the Last Supper Discourse and speaks of the role of the Holy Spirit (here called the Spirit of Truth but in other passages called the Paraclete) who would reveal the truth to the disciples (for there are truths about God and life that we cannot know through our own efforts). Furthermore, the Spirit reveals these things because the Spirit is obedient to the Father, even as Jesus was obedient to the Father when He died on the Cross. There is no jealousy in the Trinity, but rather mutual and profound love. REFLECTION This week’s Solemnity of the Holy Trinity and its readings speak about relationship within God and between God and us. Wisdom, with God from the beginning, plays on the earth and delights in us. Wisdom, made known as the Holy Spirit, has been poured into our hearts. Wisdom-made-visible is another name for Jesus. Everything the Father has is Jesus’ and will be given us through the Spirit. Father, Son, and Spirit—one God yet three persons. Some name the Holy Spirit as the life force within the Trinity. These readings make clear that the Spirit is also the life force connecting the Trinity with us. We sing this belief at every Mass: “Through Him, and with Him, and in Him, O God, almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory… for ever and ever. Amen.” Created in the image and likeness of a God who is relationship, we are called to deepen our relationship with the God who delights in us, dwells in our hearts (even in the midst of affliction), and offers us peace. Give glory to God today. Pray and deepen your relationship with God, through Christ, in the Spirit. Invite others into this relationship by your words and witness. What relationships help you know the God who dwells in you? What real difference does belief in the Trinity make in your daily living?

The best legacy you can leave to future generations will be to pass on the higher values of the Spirit. It is not a matter of merely preserving some of these, but rather of promoting an ethical and civic training which will help people to accept new values and to reshape their own character and the heart of society on the basis of an education for freedom, social justice, and responsibility. — MESSAGE TO YOUNG PEOPLE, CAMAGUEY, CUBA, 1998 Social injustice and unjust social structures exist only because individuals and groups of individuals deliberately maintain or tolerate them. It is these personal choices, operating through structures, that breed and propagate situations of poverty, oppression, and misery. For this reason, overcoming “social” sin and reforming the social order itself must begin with the conversion of our hearts. — MEETING WITH CHARITIES, SAN ANTONIO, 1987 The purpose of a business firm is not simply to make a profit, but is to be found in its very existence as a community of persons who in various ways are endeavoring to satisfy their basic needs, and who form a particular group at the service of the whole of society. Profit is a regulator of the life of a business, but it is not the only one; other human and moral factors must also be considered which, in the long term, are at least equally important for the life of a business. — CENTESIMUS ANNUS

Jubilee Year of Mercy SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY TRINITY
The word mercy, Pope Francis declared in his announcement of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, “reveals the very mystery of the Most Holy Trinity” (Misericordiae Vultus, 2). For mercy is how God comes to meet us; mercy is the fundamental law helping us recognize everyone as brothers and sisters; mercy is the bridge connecting God and humanity, opening our hearts to the hope of being loved forever despite our sinfulness. God’s self-revelation as a life-giving, love-sharing Trinity of Persons draws us closer to God in friendship and communion. Both Judaism and Islam consider mercy one of God’s most important attributes. Israel unceasingly proclaims God boundless in mercy. Islam addresses the Creator as “Merciful and Kind,” believing Divine Mercy limitless, its doors always open. May this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis prays, open us to more fervent dialogue, deepen our mutual understanding, eliminate all closed-minded disrespect, and drive out every form of violence and discrimination. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. Mercy Moment "Without the Way, there is no going. Without the Truth, there is no knowing. Without the Life, there is no living.” — Thomas à Kempis
P arents are called upon to act selflessly
every day. Family life calls us to share selfless love with one another. God is the model for us of selfless love. There was no need for God to create our planet or the creatures that live on it; it was an act of selfless love. There was also no need for God to send His only Son to save us. That too, was an act of selfless love. As we draw closer to God and the mystery of the Trinity, we learn about God's love. God has given us love in the persons of the Son and the Spirit, who in turn nurture in us the desire to do the same. Whenever we share selfless love in the family, we are sharing in the life of the Trinity.
For Children: God fills us with love. How, this week, will you show your family - your mom, dad, brothers, sisters, grandparents, cousins - that you love them as God loves them?
For Adults: Today we celebrate the relationship of love among the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. In what similar community of love do you live?

CATECHIST CORNER
Do We Believe In One God Or In Three Gods?
We believe in one God in three persons (Trinity). "God is not solitude but perfect communion."
— POPE BENEDICT XVI, MAY 22, 2005 Christians do not worship three different Gods, but one single Being that is threefold and yet remains one. We know that God is triune from Jesus Christ: He, the Son, speaks about His Father in heaven ("I and the Father are One", Jn 10:30). He prays to Him and sends us the Holy Spirit, who is the love of the Father and the Son. That is why we are baptized "in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Mt 28:19).
