From the Desk of Father Ed

4th

Sunday of Advent, December 20th

, 2020

Recent Spiritual Events: Last week we celebrated most beautiful events beginning with the Holy Day on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception and the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe: I am most thankful; to Bishop Henning for offering the Mass Saturday evening. Thanks to my brother priests. Thanks to the Spanish community for creation of a beautiful worship space for the celebration with flowers and their creativity! Thanks also for leading the Rosary in English and Spanish before Mass. We do appreciate Fr. Fidel Cruz’s talk on Our Lady during the Holy Hour following the Mass. Thanks to the Spanish Choir and Marco Hernandez for his coordination of the Spanish Masses each week and during the Feast of our Lady of Guadalupe. The Blessing of the Crèche and the Lighting of the Christmas tree was a nice moment for our parish, with a number of our choir members led by our music director, Bill Margiotta, leading us in Carols of the Christmas season. Let the light of Christ lead us out of this pandemic! Next week: Tuesday, December 22

nd and

Wednesday, December 23rd

we will not have Adoration because of the setting up the Church for Christmas, as well as a wedding celebration on Wednesday. Adoration will resume on Tuesday, Dec 29

th and Wednesday December 30

th from 1-2 PM.

Thanks for your understanding. Future Youth and Parish Planning: As I mentioned last week, in working through the pandemic we need to make some important decisions for our youth in the faith we all cherish. We would like to strengthen and grow our youth group with its great tradition here at St. Anthony’s parish. Over the years, the youth group has been active at the Sunday evening Mass. In discussing this with our priests and staff and also with our neighboring pastors, we are looking to develop a regional youth experience for our young people building on our youth group here at St Anthony’s. In order to support this new initiative, as of Sunday January 24

th, the evening Mass on Sunday will be

moved from 7 PM to 5 PM. This will also allow us to have the Youth involved in activities and meetings after the 5 PM Mass.

The 7 PM Mass has been sparsely attended over a long period of time, so we hope the move to 5 PM will also encourage more parishioners, and especially our youth, to attend the Mass at 5 PM. I ask your cooperation and your patience as we try to do what is best for our youth and our parish. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation. Christmas Mass Planning During the Pandemic: With our Bishop giving permission to celebrate Christmas Eve Masses at 2 PM, may I suggest that you consider attending the earlier Masses on Christmas Eve. There will be two Masses at 2 PM (In the Upper church and in the Lower church). With the pandemic, you may also consider attending either the 8 PM, 10 PM or Midnight Masses on Christmas Eve. Traditionally, as you know the two 4 PM Masses are very crowded. Although it is difficult to judge the crowds during this unprecedented time, we are trying to social distance effectively. So I ask you to consider attending either earlier (Masses at 2 PM) or later Masses (at 8 PM, and 10 PM and Midnight) on Christmas Eve, rather than everyone attending the two 4 PM Masses, if possible. Thanks for your flexibility and consideration in planning.

Preparing for Christmas!- As we now get closer to the celebration of Christmas, I offer you this prayer my mother known as Kolline (baptized as Pasqualine) taught my sister Eileen and me as children; Hail and Blessed be the hour and the moment in which the Son of God was born of the most pure Virgin Mary at Midnight in Bethlehem in piercing cold. In that hour vouchsafe oh my God to hear my prayer and grant my desire through the merits of our Savior Jesus Christ and his Blessed Mother Amen. (Prayer to Obtain Special Favor/Novena to St Andrew from Nov 30th till Christmas)

From all of us at St Anthony’s, Our Priests, and Staff: A Merry and Holy and Happy Christmas and a Healthy New Year,

Fr. Ed

Pastor

Isn't There Anyone Who Knows What Christmas is All About? -Charlie Brown

The best explanation I ever heard was the one Linus gave to Charlie Brown...

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were so afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior,

which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; You shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on Earth peace, good will toward men.'" Gospel of Luke, [King James Version]

We want to thank all of you who support us in everything we do. It is with your generous help that we can do God's work. We wish all our parishioners a very Blessed Christmas Season and a Spirit-filled New Year.

St. Anthony’s Peanut Butter & Jelly/Mission Gang Our next PBJ/Mission Gang will meet Saturday, January 2nd in the lower church. Everyone must e-mail RSVP if you would like to help us. Please arrive by 8:50am. We end by 10:30.

Join the dozens of wonderful people who attend each month to help feed the hungry. PBJ/Mission Sponsors: Fred Leonardo, Maryann Sacher, John & Susan Vizzi, Shane & Helena

4th Sunday of Advent 12-20-2020 Holy Gospel according to Luke 1:26-38

God sent the angel Gabriel to a town in Galilee

named Nazareth. He had a message for a young

woman promised in marriage to a man named

Joseph, who was a descendant of King David.

Her name was Mary. The angel came to her and said, “Peace be with you! The

Lord is with you and has greatly blessed you!”

Mary was deeply troubled by the angel’s message, and she

wondered what his words meant. The angel said to her,

“Don’t be afraid, Mary. God has been gracious to you. You

will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and you will

name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son

of the Most High God. The Lord God will make him a king, as

his ancestor David was, and he will be the king of the

descendants of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end!”

Mary said “How can this happen? I am not married.” The Angel said, “The Holy Spirit will

come on you, and God’s power will rest upon you. For this reason, the holy child will be

called the Son of God.” Mary said, “I am the Lord’s servant. May

it happen to me as you have said.”

Hello children of God! This is Mary’s Sunday. Today we heard

about how a special messenger came to visit Mary to tell her that

she was going to have a baby. Because Mary said Yes to God’s

plan, then Jesus was born.

God asks us to say yes to God like Mary to bring Jesus into us—

Emmanuel, God with us. God asks us to pray and be kind to

others. Jesus is the greatest gift and the reason for Christmas.

We have been greatly blessed. He is with us now.

Join us for Christmas Children Mass at 2 PM on

Christmas Eve. Let us celebrate! Jesus’ birthday.

Have a wonderful Merry and Happy Christmas.

Christmas Flower Envelopes: OOPS! - It appears the Christmas Flower offering envelopes were not in some of the mailings you received with the Christmas Schedule and Greetings! This is an important envelope for the parish. It also gives all an opportunity to memorialize loved ones. In January we will be listing all the contributions to the flowers which decorate St. Anthony’s church and a list

of those memorialized at Christmas. It is a beautiful way to bring our loved ones to mind during this season of Love at Christmas! Please consider using these Christmas flower envelopes. It will make a difference!

Christmas Novena- What is a Novena and what is the significance of a novena?

A novena is a nine-day period of private or public prayer to obtain special

graces, and to implore special favors, or make special petitions. A novena is

an ancient tradition of devotional praying in Christianity consisting of private

or public prayers repeated for nine successive days or weeks. Traditionally

here at St Anthony’s there have been these Christmas Novena of Masses of-

fered from Christmas Day through January 2nd

. There are Spiritual Bouquet

cards which can be used to remember our loved ones during the Christmas

season. You can find them throughout the Church. When you fill in your

loved ones names with a donation, please leave them in the collection or special box

provided in the church. They will be placed in the sanctuary as a sign of our prayers for those

who have gone before us!

Online Giving: Please consider making an automatic contribution each week to the parish. You can do so by going to the parish website: Saintanthonyofpadua.org. Click on parish and then go to Online giving to create an account. You will have the option to make a one time or recurring donation. Thanks so much for considering this important option.

Thanks for all you offer to Saint Anthony of Padua parish. It truly makes a difference! God Bless you!

St. Anthony’s Parish Outreach is one of them. Over the past years of the event, Subaru and their retailers have made a real impact, donating a total of $65 million to a wide range of both national and local charities. Subaru has generously donated to this program in the past as well as conducting coat drives for Parish Outreach clients. Please support those who help support our local Community!!
