Under direct supervision of Fr. Mark Knestout, this is an ongoing pastoral care ministry. St. Stephen Ministers are members of the parish, intensely trained to care for people who are experiencing a loss, or going through difficult times or life transitions. As many of you are aware, Rev. Mr. Benjamin Garcia will be ordained to the priesthood at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in DC on Saturday, June 17 and his Mass of Thanksgiving at St. Bartholomew Church will be at 6.00 p.m. this Sunday, June 18. We will be holding a reception for Ben following this Mass and all are welcome. Similarly, Mr. John Class, long-time parishioner, will be ordained to the permanent diaconate next Saturday, June 24, and he will preach at both 7.00 a.m. and 10.00 a.m. at his Masses of Thanksgiving next Sunday, June 25 at St. Bart’s. We will be having a reception for John after the 10 am Mass on that day. Please join us!

SOCIAL CONCERNS

The Poor Box for the month of June is for Bethesda Cares, a non-profit which serves the county’s homeless and working poor. Our Lady of Lourdes on East West Highway has a homeless program providing meals on Sunday nights and a “clothes closet” where needy guests can obtain donated clothing. Men's Clothing is always needed. Currently, light weight clothes are requested. You can bring items to Our Lady of Lourdes school cafeteria from 4:30 to 5:30 PM on Sundays and ask for location of drop off. Alternatively, you can call Livia Gatti at 301-469-6552 , liviangatti@verizon.net; or Selma Deleon at 240-372-5915, selmadeleon@ymail.com for clean clothes pick up. Since the clothes closet is a bit hidden, we would be happy to assist. Gabriel Network is always looking for new Angel Friend Volunteers to serve women in crisis pregnancies around the county. If interested, please check their website for upcoming trainings, www.gabrielnetwork.org. Your prayers are also always requested. Shady Grove Pregnancy Center is in need of volunteers with a heart for women experiencing crisis pregnancies. Looking to train daytime volunteers who want to become pregnancy counselors. Training consists of 8 classes held Monday and Thursday, 6.30 - 9.30 p.m. on July 27 and 31, August 3, 7, 10, 14, 17 and 21. For details, call Jackie Stippich, Executive Director, 301-963-6223. Help ‘em Smile! Join the Mid-Maryland Dental Mission of Mercy and Health Equity Festival. Help 2,000 uninsured people experiencing dental calamity obtain $2M work of emergency treatments. Dental and medical professionals and general volunteers, at least 18 years old, are welcome and must register in advance. Shifts are half a day: serve one or more shifts. Volunteers get an amazing experience (and a T-shirt). Event is September 7, 8 & 10 @ University of Maryland Xfinity Center, College Park, MD. Gifts to this annual collection help the Holy Father support victims of war, oppression, natural disasters, and others most in need of assistance.

Please drop off your envelope in the collection basket, or call the parish office, 301-229-7933, and your request will be posted in the weekly bulletin. We can only honor one individual request per weekend, so please bear in mind that, sometimes, the date you require may already be taken. Also, for your information, we will not be able to accept requests for the sponsoring of flowers on specific liturgical dates.

St. Bart’s needs your help for Digital Arts Ministry during the Mass. Get more involved in our parish by assisting with the slides projected on the screens at each Mass. We need additional volunteers to help. It is not difficult and training is provided. We especially need assistance at the 5 PM Saturday and 12 noon Sunday masses. St. Bart’s Church Guild also needs your help - the Church Guild volunteers work in a very reserved and invisible way. However, the results are very visible! The volunteers replenish the holy water dishes, launder and mend altar server robes, arrange altar flowers, dust pews and sills, align missalettes, polish candle holders, vacuum floor and carpets, and clean and organize the vestibule and bulletin boards. These tasks are routinely performed by two or three adults but we would like to have more volunteers join the Guild in the hope that we can create teams of people so that the tasks can be shared by many instead of a few. 32nd Annual Marian Day of Prayer, June 25, 2017 - we are celebrating the anniversary of the first apparition at Medjugorje at the National Shrine Grotto in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The National Celebration will include the International Rosary, Holy Mass, Confessions, Divine Mercy Chaplet, Eucharistic Blessing and testimony from pilgrims recently returned from Medjugorje and a Deacon's recounting of his experience after pilgrimage to Medjugorje. Sacred Heart Church in Bushwood (23080 Maddox Road, Bushwood, MD) is hosting their annual June Dinner on Sunday, June 25, from 12 noon until the food is gone! Menu includes fried chicken, crab cakes, country ham, potato salad, coleslaw, green beans, beets, rolls, tea or coffee. All you can eat, served buffet style. Adults $26, children 12 and under $6.
