Saints and Special Observances Sunday: Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time; Catechetical Sunday Monday: Ss. Cornelius and Cyprian Tuesday: St. Robert Bellarmine Thursday: St. Januarius Friday: Ss. Andrew Kim Tae-gŏn and Paul Chŏng Ha-sang and Companions Saturday: St. Matthew Scripture Reflection Welcome to “Lost and Found Sunday”! Just in case being in church makes us proudly consider ourselves especially religious, today’s Gospel suggests that we’d be wiser to admit that we’re sometimes lost. Then we’ll eventually be happily counted among Jesus’ “found,” because today Jesus focuses on a lost sheep, lost coin, lost son. Jesus does so because the Pharisees and scribes, proudly considering themselves especially religious, “began to complain” that Jesus “welcomes sinners and eats with them.” So Jesus warns them—and us—to stop judging others. Marvel instead that God’s amazing grace has found us! Indeed, we should become Jesus’ friends lovingly trying to find others. So Exodus asks, if God “relented in punishment” and pardoned us, shouldn’t we forgive fellow sinners graciously? Even Paul admits his “arrogance” as “foremost among sinners.” We too, happy at being “mercifully treated,” should share with everyone else Jesus’ unfailing patience.

Archdiocesan Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family. Amen. St. Catherine of Siena Parish Prayer God, Our Father, we thank you for our parish community of St. Catherine of Siena. Thank you for the many blessings that you have given us, but especially for calling us to serve as disciples of your son, Jesus Christ. As we gather today, we ask that you send your Holy Spirit to guide us in everything that we do. Transform our hearts and lead us closer to you. Help us always to seek to be a parish that is Centered on Christ and Ablaze with Love. We ask all of these things in the name of Jesus, and through the intercession of our Blessed Mother. St. Catherine of Siena, pray for us! St. Michael the Archangel Prayer St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Parish News

New Parishioners: Welcome! Please extend a warm welcome to St. Catherine of Siena’s newest parishioners. We look forward to their involvement in parish life!

• Frank, Sara, Ellie, and Mila de Boer • Chris, Annie, Christopher, Letty, and James Heard Baptisms: Congratulations! Congratulations to the following children who were baptized recently at St. Catherine:

• Graham Michael Gerhold, child of Elliot and Michelle Gerhold • William Michael Palestina, child of Joseph and Kori Palestina • Christopher Daniel Roser, child of Matthew and Amanda Roser Catholic Communications Campaign: September 14-15 This weekend, we are taking up the collection for the Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC). Your support helps the CCC connect people to Christ, in the United States and around the world, through the Internet, television, radio, and print media. Half the funds we collect remain here in the Archdiocese of New Orleans to support local efforts. Be a part of this campaign to spread the Gospel message. Support the collection today! To learn more, visit www.usccb.org/ccc.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults: September 15 If you’ve been coming to Mass for a while, but are not Catholic, we invite you to look deeper into the Catholic faith. Come meet some faithful Catholics who love the Lord and would consider it a privilege to get to know you. Our parish recently began a set of sessions to share with others the truths of the Catholic faith and the fellowship of our church family. We invite you to learn what Catholics believe, in an open and welcoming environment. These sessions also are opportunities for you to ask those perplexing and difficult questions you may have about the Church. Sessions are always held on Sunday, 9-11 am, in the parish office conference room. Feel free to come to any session. Please give us a call if you have questions or would like further information, at 957-7100 or email us at [email protected]. You also may wish to visit scschurch.com/rcia. In Sympathy Please pray for the repose of the soul of Laurie Pourciau “Cookie” Bartley and Patricia Ann Guinta. Eternal rest grant unto Laurie and unto Patricia, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace.

Safe Environment Training: September 19 The Archdiocese of New Orleans is committed to the safety and well-being of all children who participate in Church sponsored youth activities or attend Catholic schools. All new volunteers or employees must attend our Safe Environment Workshop on Thursday, September 19, at 6:30 pm in the Barrett Complex. This training course must be renewed every three years. Please contact Paula Atchley at 835-9343 with questions or concerns. Fr. Jacob DuMont on Forgiveness: September 21 Fr. Jacob DuMont, LC, will speak on “Forgiveness” at the annual morning

of reflection sponsored by the St. Catherine of Siena Rosary Altar Society, on Saturday, September 21, 8:30-noon, in the Melancon Center. Fr. Jacob is local superior for the Legionaries of Christ community, serves as chaplain for the Young Catholic Profession-als chapter of New Orleans, and also is serving at Notre Dame Seminary as a part-time spiritual director for the seminarians. Please respond to Miranda at the church office, 835-9343, if you plan to attend.

Prime Time Reminder: September 23 There is still time to participate in a “Come Paint Your Pumpkin”

evening. Do not be left out of this fun project benefiting St. Catherine of Siena and showing our parish unity! The class is on Monday, September 23, 6:30 pm, in the Melancon Center. Tickets are available in the parish office. "Over 50 tickets have been sold to date." What a splash the "unity pumpkin" will make in the parish. Thanks for your participation!

Grief Support Program to Begin: October 2 Are you struggling to cope with the loss of a loved one? To assist you in this difficult journey, St. Catherine is offering a Grief Support Group. This 10-week program is designed to guide participants through the four stages of grief using The New Day Journal by Sister Mauryeen O’Brien as well as a variety of activities including prayer, small group discussions, scripture, selected readings, and journaling. The group will meet beginning Wednesday, October 2, from 7-8:30 pm in the Parish Office Conference Room. If you are interested in partici-pating in this program or have any questions, please contact Patricia Lawson at 860-214-2681 or [email protected] or Becky Steppe, [email protected] or 289-6636. Study on The Holy Eucharist: October 16

Please join us beginning on Wednesday, October 16, for “Lectio: Eucharist—Unveiling Scripture and Tradition.” This study on of The Holy Eucharist will meet from 10 am-noon in the Melancon Center. Jesus said, “This is my Body” and, “This is my Blood.” Some say they’re merely symbols of remembrance. Others say they’re really the Body and Blood of Christ, but can’t

explain how that’s possible. The Eucharist is the center-point of the Mass—but why? Acclaimed author and teacher Dr. Brant Pitre rigorously digs down to the biblical roots of the Eucharist, through its foreshadowing in the miraculous events of the Old Testament, the Gospels, and Apostolic teaching. We'll discover firsthand how Christ's Body and Blood are an integral and wondrous part of God's plan for our salvation. Please contact Carol Rooney at [email protected] for more information. Consideration for Those Maintaining the Church lease help our Rosary Altar Society in their consistent and generous work of keeping our beautiful church clean. Kindly take Clarion Herald issues and bulletins home with you or return them to the tables in the narthex as you leave the church.

Parish News The Bible Timeline to Begin: November 4

The Bible Timeline study will begin on Monday, November 4. Meetings will take place from 10 am-noon in the Melancon Center. The Bible Timeline takes participants on a journey through the entire Bible. Participants will go deep into each period of salvation history and discover the amazing story woven throughout all of

Scripture. The Bible study offers insight on the major people, places, and events of the Bible and how they all come together to reveal the remarkable story of our faith. Please contact Carol Rooney at [email protected] for more information or to register. CYO March for Life Pilgrimage: January 21-26 The St. Catherine CYO is taking a life-changing pilgrimage to Washington, DC, for the 46th Rally and March for Life, Tuesday, January 21, through Sunday, January 26, 2020. The pilgrimage also includes a visit to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the Capitol, Holocaust Museum, Smithsonian Museums, Lincoln Memorial, Supreme Court, Geaux Forth Youth Rally, nightly prayer and youth ministry, and more! Trip departure will be in the evening of the 21st; return will be in the evening on the 26th. The $595 cost includes motor coach transportation and hotel accommodations based on four students or two adults. A deposit will be due on Friday, September 27. *Teens registering without a sponsoring parish/school group, add $100 to cost. SCS Vocation Cross Program On the second Sunday of each month at all Masses, a vocation cross is given to a family or individual who makes a commitment to pray for vocations for a month. Those making this commitment agree to attend the Mass for which they signed up to accept the cross after the homily (a booklet with suggested prayers is provided), and to return the vocation cross and booklet to the church office on the Wednesday before the second Sunday of the following month. A reminder email is sent the week before one’s selected date. If you have questions or want to sign up, please contact Rich and Leslie Baudry, 442-7013, or email [email protected] or [email protected]. Pray for our Parish! Bishop Robert Barron has noted that "prayer is not incidental to ministry. It is not decorative. It is the lifeblood of the Church's efforts. Without it, nothing will succeed; without it, no ministers will come forward. At all points, pray, pray, pray." Did you know that our parish has a group of people who have committed to praying for our parish? Each month, they receive an email with specific prayer requests for the needs and direction of our parish, and pray the SCS Parish Prayer daily for those intentions. Would you like to join in this important effort? Contact Joni Maurer, [email protected], to be placed on the list for monthly emails. Social Outreach Opportunity SCS Women's Club is forming teams to cook and deliver meals to Hotel Hope. Hotel Hope is a shelter for homeless women and their children that helps to move these families from homelessness to self-sufficiency. With no kitchen facilities, Hotel Hope depends on volunteers to deliver hot evening meals for the families. Our goal is to cover unmet needs for weekend meals. Please prayerfully consider participating in this social outreach partnership. For more information you may contact Janet Meyers at [email protected] or Carol Pfister at [email protected]. Support for Prison Ministry Initiatives This fall our Parish will again support the Kairos Retreat at Dixon Correctional Institute. The retreat begins on Thursday, October 24, and concludes with the closing ceremony on Sunday, October 27. We are asking that you help. Donations of cookies and also of cards and letters will be most gratefully accepted and will be delivered to the retreat directors by October 22. The St. Catherine prison ministry team prays that the current effort will demonstrate how the parish is “Centered on Christ, and Ablaze With Love!” and will surpass the extremely generous previous responses. For guidelines regarding cookie donations and any other questions, or to have donations picked up, please contact Jackie Appleton, [email protected] or 858-5192.

Prayer for Vocations O Jesus, sent by the Father to reveal His merciful love, give to your Church the gift of young people who are ready to follow you as priests and consecrated religious, to be among your people as a sign of your renewing and saving presence. Holy Virgin, Mother of the Redeemer, you who pondered his word in the depth of your heart, sustain with your motherly intercession our families and parish communities, so that they may help young people to answer generously the call of the Lord. Amen.

Lord, Teach Me to Pray is a three-part Ignatian prayer series. It was developed as an outreach program to bring the Holy Spirit into our daily lives in facilitated faith-sharing prayer communities, where the Lord, himself, teaches us to pray. Part 1: Praying Christian Virtues (12 weeks) focuses on the need to develop good religious habits based on the spiritual teachings on Christian virtues, introduces the prayer of meditation and contemplation, Consciousness Examen, what to do for dryness in prayer, and how to listen. Part 2: My 19th Annotation (27 weeks) is the experience of praying the full Ignatian Exercises written by St. Ignatius of Loyola. Part 1 is a prerequisite. Part 3: Discernment and Gifts of the Spirit (14 weeks) focuses on the gifts of the Holy Spirit and St. Ignatius’ Rules of Discernment. Parts 1 and 2 are prerequisites. There will be three groups offered at St. Catherine of Siena this fall. Men’s Part 3 will be offered on Monday evenings at 7 pm beginning on September 16, in the Melancon Center St. John Paul II room. Reservations are $22 (check) per person to Magnificat, 1005 Maryland Avenue, Kenner 70062, or $23 through the Magnificat site (google “Magnificat Metairie”). Dancing With the Stars: September 28

Two of our parishioners, Christian and Jennifer Collins, will be Dancing With the Stars to raise money for the Good Shepherd School. This amazing ministry of our Archdiocese provides a Catholic education to children who would otherwise be unable to afford this blessing. No child or family ever pays a bill. The school is completely funded by the generosity of donations. Please help the Collinses do their part to help this wonderful school

by voting for Team Two for $1 per vote, by being a sponsor for the event, or by cheering them on in person on September 28 at the Marriott Hotel downtown. Visit thegoodshepherdschool.org for information on all three ways to support our own SCS dancers! St. Pio of Pietrelcina Relics in NOLA: October 5 Relics of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina—better known as Padre Pio—will be visiting Notre Dame Seminary in the Archdiocese of New Orleans, on Saturday, October 5, 9 am-6 pm. The Most Reverend Gregory M. Aymond, Archbishop of New Orleans, will celebrate a Mass in honor of Saint Pio at 8 am in the Chapel at Notre Dame Seminary, 2901 South Carrollton Avenue, New Orleans. For more information, call 866-7426 or email [email protected].

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: Today, throughout the Catholic Church, we celebrate Catechetical Sunday with the theme of "Stay with Us." This is a special observance in each parish as we pray for and ask God's blessings upon all those who share in the important work of catechesis and Christian formation. Those who share in this ministry are our catechists in the Parish School of Religion, the administrators and teachers in our Catholic Schools, youth ministers and those who are involved in the ministry of RCIA. Please join me in thanking them for not only giving of themselves in a generous way to provide religious education and formation for our youth and adults, but also pray that God will continue to bless them and inspire them in their ministry. They give of themselves in a generous way to help others open their hearts to Christ. Furthermore, their example of faith is one that can be a source of inspiration to us. Join me in praying for students, parents and families on this Catechetical Sunday. We are reminded that parents are the primary teachers of their children in faith and we pray for them that they will joyfully fulfill this vocation. I invite parents involved to continue this involvement in the education and Christian formation of their children. Parents, they need you, your support, and they need your example of living out your faith. You are a powerful witness to your child. Please know of my deep appreciation and prayer of thanksgiving to all of you who share in this important ministry of catechesis and Christian formation. Wishing you God's blessings, and with the assurance of my prayers, I am Gratefully in Christ, Most Reverend Gregory M. Aymond Archbishop of New Orleans
