TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Today’s feast, extending a dimension of Easter joy into

Ordinary Time, reminds us that every aspect of worship centers on

the mystery of God in three persons. At baptism, we are

Initiated into Christ and the Spirit. The Creed we recite at Mass every Sunday has its roots in the ancient celebration of

baptism, when a new believer was questioned at the edge of the waters of the font with three questions: Do you believe in God, the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit? Three questions, three affirmations, three immersions into the saving waters.

Because every liturgy abounds with references to the Trinity, not only in words but in blessings by the sign of the cross, this

feast was not easily accepted into the calendar. Pope Alexander in the eleventh century remarked that the

liturgy is so laden with praise of the Trinity that there was no need for a special feast. Two hundred years later, while in exile in France, Pope John XXII proclaimed the feast, but it was not until 1911 that Pope St. Pius X gave it status as a solemnity. A favorite image in art for today is the Icon of the Trinity,

showing three glorious winged men seated at a table laden with bread and a cup of wine. It recalls Abraham’s hospitality to

angels and gives expression to the inner life of God, a life lived in relationship, a life poured out in abundance whenever

Christians gather at the table of the Eucharist to give praise to the Father, in Christ, in the embrace of the Spirit.

CONGRATULATONS DEACON PETER GENARES

We have another happy announcement!

Peter Genares was ordained a Deacon on June 15th at St. Patrick’s Cathedral!

Most of you know Peter as a lector at St.

Clare’s. Five years ago, Peter approached Fr. Aufieri and asked for permission to begin

studying at St. Joseph’s Seminary in their Permanent Diaconate Program. It is a grueling, demanding course of study that requires you to go to class after work

several nights a week. The men in this program, needless to say, are very dedicated to Christ. Fr. Aufieri thought very highly

of him, as I do and everyone who meets him does.

Peter is especially devoted to Our Lord. He has always help our parish in whatever way he could. He is a tireless and humble

servant of the church and a great credit to our parish.

Peter will be serving as deacon at BOTH churches, since it is one parish—St. Clare’s and St. Francis. Please congratulate

him when you see him and we wish him many years of happy service here.

God bless you, Deacon Peter!

OUR SCRIPTURE READING AT MASS THIS WEEKEND

The Book of Proverbs

Chap 8 , Verses 22-31 The wisdom of God played on the surface of

God’s earth, finding delight in the human race.

The Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans Chap 5, Verses 1-5

The love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy spirit.

The Gospel of John

Chap 16, Verses 12-15 The Spirit of truth will guide you to all truth.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Happy Father’s Day to all of our dads here at St. Clare’s. You deserve to be treated well today and everyday, but on this day you deserve recognition for the true men that you are. As Teddy Roosevelt once said, compared with fatherhood, “everything else was of very small importance from the standpoint of happiness.” I want to talk about another type of fatherhood as well today, the priest as father. More specifically, we are soon to say goodbye to Fr. Reiman, who has been a spiritual father at both our parishes. I came to know Fr. Reiman in 2017 when I was assigned as pastor at St. Francis. He has been a pillar of support to me and a steady hand on the wheel during some turbulent times here. He has been attentive to the young and the old, the sick and the dying, and to both our school kids and CCD kids. And when Fr. Aufieri, the pastor of St Clare’s died, Fr. Matt stepped up to the plate and doubled his work load, never complaining and always joyful to do God’s work. I can’t think of a finer example of a priest who is so inspiring to so many people. He will be greatly missed here. That said, our loss is Montgomery’s gain. Just as Jesus moved from town to town and village to village to spread the truth and his message of salvation, so too must his priest do the same. He will now be the spiritual father of two parishes, in Montgomery and in Maybrook. He will need your prayers and support to be successful in his mission and I know you will join me in praying for him. On June 23rd we will have his farewell Mass at 12 noon at Saint Francis Xavier Church followed by a wonderful reception in his honor. There will be music and food, as well as an opportunity to present Fr. Matt with gifts to show him our appreciation for his sacrifice. Please be generous, as young priests don’t exactly have a lot of resources. God bless you this Father’s Day and God bless Father Reiman!
