XXXIV Sunday The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe
November 24, 2019 As Americans, we do not much think of Kings except in the headlines that contain news of monarchies
in Europe or the Middle or Far East. We look on monarchies, either Kings or Queens, with a slight smile; not laughing at, but not taking the institution as seriously as the subjects of the monarchy. So, it may appear to be a bit of stretch for us to engage this Feast of Christ the King. A brief look at the origins of the celebration may shed some light on it. It was in the early 20th century in the pontificate of Pius XI. Sadly, Achille Ratti is often overlooked in the history of the church in the 20th century. After his ordination in 1879, Ratti served as a teacher, a scholar with three doctoral degrees, librarian in Milan and finally as head of the Vatican Library in Rome. Do not mis-take him for an ordinary book worm. He was an excellent mountain climber and did so until he was 56. He mastered many peaks that were rarely attempted including one called Monte Rosa; a climb designated by the British Alpine Association as “dangerous and foolhardy.” There is a good biography of Pius XI in a book called The Pope’s Last Crusade by Peter Eisner. He was the only world leader to publicly denounce Hitler and Nazism prior to World War II. Pius looked around his contemporary culture, as all good prophets do, and saw the alarming rise of sec-ularism accompanied by a culture of violence and savagery. Throughout Europe and beyond, a cultural tecton-ic shift was taking place which would eventually shake the world. The rise of Nationalism, Secularism, Athe-ism all of which, Pius believed, had their origins in women and men being swayed by false leaders and false values. Pius XI essentially said, if you want a leader look to Jesus Christ. And what kind of leader do we find in the peripatetic preacher from Nazareth? He evidently owned nothing but the clothes he wore. He had no home. He preached a message of power based on service and love rather than dominance and control. Opposed by the religious authorities of his day, he died in ignominy calling out for forgiveness with his last breath. The gospel passage this weekend presents Jesus at what the world would claim is the nadir of His ministry, if not the lowest point of His life. But we know His story does not end there abandoned on that dreadful hill after suffering outrageous violence at the hands of cruel soldiers. This is the great reversal that is a central theme in Luke’s gospel account. Mary articulates it beautifully in the opening chapters of Luke’s account in the prayer of praise known as the Magnificat, in part:
He has scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart. He has put down the mighty from their thrones,
and has exalted the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich He has sent away empty. In Jesus, the dead are brought to life. This is the greatest reversal. Pius XI spoke out against the evil of his day, can we do any less? Two thousand years ago a poor preacher executed as a threat to the Emperor of Rome had tipped the world towards God in a way that no one else has ever done. As difficult as it is to get your minds to embrace all the issues of the world, the Church today, with a unique wisdom that subsists within our teaching and traditions, boldly claims that Jesus is King of the Universe. Now that is a very challenging thought to embrace. The point ultimately is not that we embrace it but that it embraces us. We are taken be-yond the physical into the domain of metaphysics, into things that are eternal. This is the kingdom that our King came to establish; an eternal Kingdom. And He did so in his preach-ing, His healing, his teaching, His suffering, His death and His resurrection. He calls on us to imitate Him and share in his work, now continuing only through us. We are to preach, to heal, to teach, to suffer, to die to self and live for the other and to rise again to be with Him forever. Faithfully,
Msgr. Diamond

Thanksgiving is a few days away and that means so is #GivingTuesday.
What is Giving Tuesday? Celebrated on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, December 3rd, #GivingTuesday is a movement to
inspire millions of people across the world to give back to causes and issues that matter to them. This international day of charity encourages everyone, everywhere to select a charity to support.
We are excited to announce that we have teamed up with The Catholic Foundation of Greater Philadelphia to expand our #GivingTuesday effort and raise as much as we can for this year’s beneficiary.
This year Catholic Charities has selected Mercy Hospice as the #GivingTuesday beneficiary!
Who is Mercy Hospice? Mercy Hospice is a CCA beneficiary of Catholic Social Services. They are a community grounded in faith and service where single women and
mothers with children, experiencing homelessness and in recovery can find opportunities for new beginnings.
Your gift gives opportunity, hope and life to so many deserving mothers and children right here in our communi-
ty. You will put shoes on their feet, food on their tables, coats on their backs and so much more. Your faith-filled
support truly saves lives. Everyone knows about Black Friday and Cyber Monday but this Thanksgiving season, consider giving a gift that goes far
beyond the holiday table. Please consider donating to Mercy Hospice for
#GivingTuesday.

The 2019 Saint Cornelius “Giving Tree" will extend its branches to
reach to those in need this holiday season. This year we ask for your generosity to assist the following outreach organizations: The Catholic Social Services of Delaware County in Chester, Mary, Mother of Hope House III in Wilming-ton, Mothers' Home in Darby and Saint Cornelius Minis-try of Caring, aiding those in our own community. Addi-tionally, the Giving Tree provides children’s winter coats to the outreach programs and schools at St. Ignati-us, St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Peter the Apostle in Philadelphia. The Giving Tree has been set up in the Narthex so you can stop by after Mass throughout November and early December to select a gift tag from the Giving Tree. Purchase the item indicated on the tag (new, please), attach the tag securely or identify the gift and destina-tion, and place your gift under the tree by December 15th. Visa or MasterCard or store gift card for Target or Walmart or grocery or pharmacy stores can be dropped into the snowman next to the tree by December 15th. All gifts and gift cards must be returned to the Giving Tree by Sunday, December 15th to allow time for deliv-ery to the recipients. The Ministry of Consolation A St. Cornelius community response to the needs of people grieving the death of a significant per-son/persons in their lives. The ministry honors the words and example of the Lord Jesus:
"Blessed are they who mourn; they shall be consoled" (Matthew 5:4).
A team of three trained St. Cornelius church members are the facilitators for the consolation ministry. The next session will be November 16, 2019. Open Consola-tion Sessions will be held in the Bethany Room of the Church the third Saturday of the month from 3:30 to 5:00pm. Please contact Joan Holliday at (610) 717-2180.
The Sunday collection is very important for us to maintain our fiscal responsibilities. So, if you are away on a Sunday, ENJOY; but remember YOUR church.

Eucharistic Adoration Wishing you a Blessed Thanksgiving with family and friends. Adoration will be closed Monday, November 25 and Friday, November 29 and will reopen on Monday, December 2. Please pray for the Poor Souls in Purgatory, healing of families, seminarians, vocations and pray for our country. Heaven needs our prayers. Serving the Homeless In Southern Chester County
“To change the world, we must be good to those who can-not repay us”—Pope Francis
St. Cornelius volunteers care for homeless families through the Family Promise inter-faith ministry in south-ern Chester County. Our forty-four registered volunteers spend time with the most vulnerable in our neighboring community. We need 27-30 volunteers each time we serve 4 times a year. Teams provide for set-up of beds, preparing and serving meals, socialization with the resi-dents, and sleeping overnight at the Host Church. We wel-come new volunteers and if you can’t volun-teer, we would appreci-ate donations to support the food purchases for the meals that we pre-pare when we have our time to volunteer. To sign-up to volunteer or contribute contact Kathy Silvon at [email protected] or call 484-720-8214

Service Club The students who are involved in the school’s service club received their pins and prayer cards from Mon-signor Diamond at Mass on November 1. Jesus was the ultimate servant during his life on earth because he willingly gave up his life for us. We honor his example of servanthood by humbly serving others in our daily lives. The children at St. Cornelius School do many service projects throughout the year to help those in need or to bring a smile to someone’s face.
