Family Assistance Ministry (FAM): Assists those in need in southern Orange County with resources for food, shelter, and personalized supportive counsel and aid, helping clients bridge the gap from dependency to self-sufficiency. The Christian Service Office: is both a referral office for those who need basic life essentials, and is a food dis-tribution center. We coordinate with other ministries and South County agencies. Our goal is to encourage faith and hope in the love of God, and to further a sense of dignity and self-respect in all those we meet. We hope to achieve this by assisting with the material, emotional and spiritual needs of families and individuals. The Christian Service office will take donations and has varying occasions that require the assistance of volunteers. The Christian Service office serves the community of Dana Point and Capistrano Beach and is located in front of Knight Hall. Operational Hours: Monday and Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Detention Ministry: The detention ministry reaches out to incarcerated persons in Orange County. Members meet weekly and serve the incarcerated person who requests a visit. We assist with reconnecting a fellow brother and sister of Christ, to the Church and Faith though providing first communion preparation, bible studies, communion services and person-to-person visits. St. Vincent de Paul: Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering, in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and patron, St. Vincent de Paul. Organ-ized locally, Vincentians witness God’s love by embracing all works of charity and justice. The Society collaborates with other people of good will in relieving need and addressing its causes, making no distinction in those served because in them, Vincentians see the face of Christ. You can assist with this ministry and help reach out to the underprivileged in our community. The general time commitment is 1 to 10 hours per month. Tijuana Ministry: Every Thursday, after the 8:15 a.m. morning Mass, volunteers make approximately 400 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, which are taken to Tijuana on Friday and distributed to jail inmates, the homeless, and needy. iHOPE: Provides basic needs, shelter, tools, and training to the homeless, at-risk, and working poor to guide them in their return to self-sufficiency. iHOPE has established a twice-monthly distribution program providing basic essentials to more than 250 individuals monthly. Essentials distributed include clothing, blankets, shoes, and personal hygiene necessities. If you would like to assist in this ministry please contact iHOPE at [email protected]

Outreach Programs to the Poor

On Saturday, September 27, we celebrate the memorial of the "Great Apostle of Charity, St. Vincent de Paul. Although he died almost 400 years ago, the Vincen-tians and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul continue his work today by serving Christ in the poor. At the entrance of Knight Hall is located a very important parish office, the Office of Christian Services. Open three days a week, it is staffed by one part-time em-ployee and several volunteers including members of the St. Vincent de Paul Soci-ety. Each year, over 2,400 people come to our parish and receive a variety of ser-vices including food, help with rent, utilities, storage (for the homeless), gas money, bus passes, assistance with medical bills and prescriptions, and a motel for the night. Throughout the year, parishioners are encouraged to support Christians Services

through food drives, volunteering and financial assistance. Last fiscal year, parishioners contributed $56,000 to Christian Services However, Christian Services is but one of several dozen ways that the parish assists the local, national and international community. Over the last four years, St. Edward the Confessor Church has given over $900,000 in aid to various charitable organizations. As Catholic Christians we realize that loving God and neighbor form one inseparable commandment. St. Vincent de Paul addressed his fellow priests and brothers who were an-noyed by the poor who would approach them while they were attending Mass and praying: “when you are called from your prayers or the Eucharistic cele-bration to serve the poor, you lose nothing, since to serve the poor is to go to God. You must see God in the faces of the poor.” Our Church is both a house of prayer and a house of the poor. The poor in our area and beyond know that they are welcome here and can find in us the spiritual and physical support they need. They find Christ in us and by serving them we see the face of God. In today’s bulletin you will find a wide range of opportunities to serve others. Each and every Christian is called to be is a house of prayer and a house of the poor. Serving the poor should be a regular part of our lives for, as St. Vincent de Paul tell us: “the poor are your masters. You are the servant.” Pray to God in the very words of the Great Apostle of Charity: “Lord, help me to make time today to serve you in those who are most in need of encouragement or assistance.” And, make a commitment this week to serve.

El sábado, 27 de septiembre celebramos el memorial de la "Gran Apóstol de la Caridad, San Vicente de Paul. Aunque murió hace casi 400 años, los Vicentinos y la Sociedad de San Vicente de Paul continúan su trabajo hoy por servir a Cristo en los pobres. A la entrada de Knight Hall se encuentra una oficina de la parroquia muy importan-te, la Oficina de Servicios Cristianos. Abiertas tres días a la semana, que es atendido por un empleado a tiempo parcial y varios voluntarios entre ellos miembros de la Vicente de Paúl. Cada año, más de 2.400 personas vienen a nuestra parroquia y re-cibir una variedad de servicios, incluyendo los alimentos, ayuda con el alquiler, ser-vicios públicos, de almacenamiento (para personas sin hogar), dinero para la gasoli-na, pases de autobús, ayuda con las facturas y recetas médicas, y un hotel para la pasar la noche.

A lo largo del año, se le pide a los feligreses apoyar a los cristianos a través de Servicios de colectas de ali-mentos, el voluntariado y la asistencia financiera. El pasado año fiscal, los feligreses contribuyeron $56,000 dólares a Servicios Cristianos Sin embargo, la oficina de Servicios Cristianos no es sino una de varias docenas de formas en que la parro-quia ayuda a la comunidad local, nacional e internacional. Durante los últimos cuatro años, San Eduardo el Confesor ha dado más de $ 900,000 en ayuda a diversas organizaciones benéficas. Servir a los pobres debe ser una parte regular de nues-tras vidas para, como San Vicente de Paul nos dice: "los pobres son sus amos. Usted es el siervo ". On October 13th, Fr. Brendan and 19 Saint Edward parish-ioners will be traveling to the slums of Jamaica and volunteer with the Missionaries of the Poor to give hope to the for-gotten and those left on the streets to perish. We invite you to join us spiritually on

our pilgrimage. We will take your special prayer inten-tions with us. The Brothers and your fellow parishioners will pray over them daily while at the monastery. The missionary brothers are in constant need of medical supplies, diapers and food. Therefore, we are appealing to you for a love donation that will aid us in obtaining these desperately needed items. There will be a second collection for your prayer intentions and/or donations at all the Masses on October 4th & 5th. Or you can leave them at the church office. Please keep us in your prayers.
