This weekend we celebrate the feast of Pentecost - the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles gathered in the upper room in Jerusalem; this event is often referred to as ‘the birth of the church’. The story of Pentecost is found in the Acts of the Apostles, the first reading this weekend. The account in today’s Gospel, John 20:19-23, also recounts how Jesus gave the gift of the Holy Spirit to his disciples. Jesus fulfilled his promise to send to his disciples a helper, an advocate, who would enable them to be his witnesses throughout the world. In the busy-ness of our world, perhaps this week we can take the time to reflect on the gifts of peace and joy that we need so badly – in our world and in our own lives. Try to find the balance between the ‘truly important’ and the ‘things that take up time’ …. As our Year 6 students begin their preparation for Confirmation, it is fitting that they make their ‘commitment’ to understanding more about this sacrament and are presented to the community this weekend. Please keep these students in your prayers over the next few months … Our year 4 students are getting closer to receiving the body and blood of Christ and we keep them in our prayers as well … At Assembly, last Monday, Millie and Chelsea spoke about, “our 2017 St Vincent De Paul Winter Appeal. This appeal is for the people in our local community who don’t have the money to buy the essential things we need to be healthy. We are going to start the winter appeal this week and will be coming round very soon to give your class a poster made by some of our year 6 leaders and a basket for your donations.” Here are the class allocations:

VISUAL ART NEWS ~ Mrs Lisa Poulter NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY DAY

All students and teachers are invited to be involved in a Nature Photography Day on Wednesday, June 14 (Week 9). Our theme will be Nature. Photos could include sunsets, cats, dogs, stones, the sea or close-ups of leaves and flowers.

In their own time students are asked to take an interesting photo and either bring in a copy, or email it their classroom teacher. The Visual Arts leaders will then display these for the school community to see.

The idea of this day is to appreciate nature, to see its beauty, and to think about how we can keep it that way by not littering and polluting.

IT NEWS ~ Miss Michelle Hill

Robotics and Coding

Year 1 had two special visitors Wednesday morning! A human visitor named Geoff (Miss Liels’ dad) and a robotic visitor named Nao. Geoff works at Mt Scopus College and he brought his singing/dancing/talking robot to meet the Year 1 students. A few Year 5 students joined the session because they have been discussing the ethical issue of robots taking over human jobs. It was interesting for the Year 5s to see how human like robots are becoming and therefore the potential for them to replace humans in certain jobs.

Thank you to Miss Liels for organising this visit and thank you to Geoff for bringing Nao to meet us. Scan the QR code to see Nao dancing to Gangnam Style.

SUSTAINABILITY NEWS ~ Miss Amanda McCurdy

Reusable Lunch Order Bags! Rubbish control is a big issue facing our world. To help reduce the amount of rubbish produced in our school, the year 6 ‘i Sea i Care’ Ambassadors have pledged to make a difference.

A survey of just 1 class showed on average each student has at least 1 lunch order a week. Over a term this equates to approximately 200 paper bags or 800 bags per class throughout the year. This means that across the school we go through approximately 11,200 paper bags a year!

To help reduce this number we are encouraging each student to purchase a reusable lunch bag. These will be available for pre-order through CareMonkey at a discounted rate of $9.

Orders close on Monday 19th of June and PAYMENT MUST BE RECEIVED AT THE TIME OF ORDER.

After this date, the lunch wallets will be available at the Uniform Shop for $12.

‘i Sea i Care’ Peer teaching

On the Tuesday 23rd of May, our ‘i Sea i Care’ ambassadors visited St. Joan of Arc Primary School. They were involved in a peer teaching workshop where they had the opportunity to present a lesson to a year 1 class.

This was a fantastic experience for our ambassadors who all stepped out of their comfort zone and into the shoes of a teacher.

Sunday 4th June Pentecost Pentecost celebrates the fullness of the Spirit and the great gathering of nations. It brings the Easter season to its conclusion. The Risen Lord has been exalted to his rightful place next to God and he has sent his Spirit to fill the earth with God's power. The world is charged with divine energy; it needs but a spark to ignite it with life and with excitement. This vitality explodes into the extraordinary. Tongues are loosed and speech overflows its linguistic constraints; charismatic gifts flood the valleys of human habitation; barred doors are burst open and frightened hearts are calmed. The Spirit of the Lord fills the whole world. Once again we gather together for one reason, only to discover that God has gathered us for another. Through the Spirit of God, we are reconciled to each other and then together we spend ourselves for the common good. Through the Spirit of God the world is renewed, the community is revitalised, and we come to know the mysterious yet all pervasive peace of Christ. The Spirit has been poured forth and works wonders wherever human hearts are open to its promptings. The earth is renewed each time rivalries are resolved, distinctions are recognised as merely expressions of diversity, peace is restored, comfort and solace are offered, and forgiveness is granted. We are immersed in the vigour of the Spirit of God. All we have to do is open ourselves to it and the reign of God will be born in our midst. © Dianne Bergant CSS

Marillac House As St Finbar’s has had a long and

supportive relationship with Marillac House, we wish to inform you that on 5th May, 2017 the Daughters of

Charity and the Board of Marillac Ltd handed over all services and

properties to St John of God Health. This difficult decision was taken in

order to secure sustainable long term

quality services to the 350 clients currently supported. We are

confident that St John of God Accord Disability Service is able to provide

the mission focus, resources and expertise to care for these most

vulnerable members of our

community.

Confirmation Commitment As we celebrate the feast of

Pentecost this weekend, we welcome

the 70 young people preparing for Confirmation, to be presented to the

parish, to show their commitment to the reception of this sacrament.

Our thanks to the school teachers

and staff, and the parish catechists for all they give to the program.

St Vincent de Paul Society Winter Appeal

The St Vincent de Paul Society Victoria supports people when they need help to overcome challenges and prevents them

becoming isolated, vulnerable and impoverished. Investing in prevention and

early intervention helps to address the cause

of people’s problems, and is far more effective and efficient than waiting for a crisis to occur. This year’s Winter Appeal will be held in late-

June (24th – 25th). In the meantime, we are appealing for donations of blankets, doonas,

sleeping bags, etc. These can be placed in the

box in the foyer. We are also seeking donations of non-perishable foods (e.g. rice,

pasta, soup, tinned fish, etc.).

Children’s Mass Children are welcome to attend

Children’s Mass this Sunday at 5pm. With songs they may know, as well as

the option of Children’s Liturgy during the readings, children are also invited to bring up the gifts and present the

results of their Children’s Liturgy activity to Father and the parish. Please

help us support your children’s faith journey by attending this special Mass. Thank you to the Smith family for their

ongoing commitment to providing Children’s Mass for our parish.

Entrance Antiphon The Love of God has been poured into

our hearts through the spirit of God dwelling within us, alleluia.

Communion Antiphon

On the last day of the festival, Jesus

stood and cried out: If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink,

alleluia.

CARING FOR THE SOUL: AN EVENING

REFLECTION Thursday 8 June, 4.30–6pm

Cathedral Room, Cardinal Knox Centre, 383

Albert Street, East Melbourne The language of the seasons lends itself fittingly

to our faith lives: often we find ourselves ‘cold’, ‘taking shelter’ and ‘seeking warmth’. With

Melbourne’s wintry season approaching, you are

invited to a conversation with author and teacher Mark Patrick Hederman OSB, as he reflects on the very important task of ‘caring for the soul’.

Mark Patrick Hederman OSB has been a monk of Glenstal Abbey in Limerick for over 40 years.

Formerly headmaster of the school, he has just

completed eight years as Abbot. He has a doctorate in the philosophy of education. He studied in Paris under Emmanual Levinas and

has lectured in philosophy and literature in America and Nigeria as well as Ireland, and was

a founding editor of the cultural journal The

Crane Bag. Cost: Free. Wine and cheese provided.
