Year 6 Camp Last week the Year 6 camp was held at Forest Lodge in South Gippsland and from all accounts it was a huge success. It was wonderful to see the students challenge themselves in the activities provided by the camp as well as to see the interaction between staff and students. Whilst at camp, we received feedback from Coal Creek village, which was our activity on the way to camp about the exemplary behaviour of our students and the level of engagement they had in the activities provided. As a Principal, this type of feedback always validates the work we do as a school and as parents. Congratulations to all involved! Health and Harmony Day Friday 17th March has been set aside by our Year 6 Wellbeing Captains as our Health and Harmony day. The day will begin with a ‘Ride/walk to school’ focus and then special activities during the day to promote staff and student wellbeing. Thanks to our P & F who will be providing a fruit snack for the students who ride/walk to school. School Swimming Program Our school swimming program for all Year 3 & 4 Students and Year 2D will begin on Tuesday 18th April and will run for 2 weeks. This is the first 2 weeks of Term 2. We have changed venue for swimming lessons this year to Starfish Swim School in Bentleigh. The reasons for changing to this venue is that it is much closer to school so the interruptions to lessons will be decreased. The venue is also a private facility so we will have sole use of the pool and more importantly the change rooms. There will be no members of the general public at the pool or in the change rooms. The venue has also recently been renovated and provides a safe modern environment for swimming lessons. Principal’s Conference Next week from Tuesday – Friday I will be attending the Victorian Catholic Schools Principal’s Conference in Lorne. During my absence Mr Nigel Rodrigues will be Acting Principal and Miss Michelle Hill will be Acting Deputy Principal. I Sea I Care On Tuesday 14th March our I Sea i Care Ambassadors attended an excursion at Sorrento. Thank you to Marianne Tome for accompanying the students to this event. The children will provide a full report in next week’s newsletter. Walkathon On the last day of Term 1 – Friday 31st March - we will be holding our annual Walkathon at Dendy Park. Thanks to all of our hard working P & F who are coordinating this event. School will also conclude on this day at 1:50pm. School will resume for Term 2 on Tuesday 18th April at 8:50am. God Bless, Mr Pat Berlingeri Principal

As we enter into the third week of Lent, we pause for a moment to reflect on where we have been … our Lenten journey has taken us from the temptations in desert to the reverence at the top of the mountain …. This week as we come down from the mountain and go about our daily lives, our gospel writer, John, reminds us that Jesus is the ‘living water’, that will help us to open are eyes, minds and hearts to those around us…. see the good as well as the injustices and take positive action to ‘make it right’….. Take a moment each day this week to discover the Jesus who gave hope and life to a Samaritan woman, who felt isolated and alone … and ask that same Jesus to bless us with the waters of joy, love and peace. Our Project Compassion appeal continues this week and the story we can focus on hits close to home – the story of Uncle Richard, a survivor of the Stolen Generations, forcibly removed from his family as a child and taken to Kinchela Boys Home (KBH) in NSW. You can access his story at http://www.caritas.org.au/projectcompassion Last night, the parents and students of Year 1 attended a beautiful and reflective Prayer night in preparation for their Class Mass on Sunday. Thanks to Ms Adair and Miss Liels for their fantastic preparation and organisation and of course to all who were a part of the night – Mr Berlingeri and Mr Rodrigues… Please show your support for our lovely Year 1 students by attending their Class Mass this Sunday evening @ 5pm.

I invite you to join me for prayer and reflection at 3pm on Tuesday 21st March and Tuesday 28th March in the Marian room (back of the church).

Dear Families of St Finbar’s,

Update: As most of you are aware St Finbar’s is a Kidsmatter School and therefore works under the framework set out by the Australian Government for all Primary Schools.

‘Kidsmatter is not a program, but a framework that helps us take care of our student’s mental health needs by focusing on:

Creating a positive school community

teaching children skills for good social and emotional development

working together with families

Recognising and getting help for children with mental health problems.’

The framework is divided into four main components which are:

C1. Positive school community

C2: Social and emotional learning

C3. Working with parents and carers

C4: Helping children with mental health difficulties At St Finbar’s, over the past two years, we have completed the implementation of Components 1&2 and will begin the implementation of Component 3 next term. We believe this third component will be a significant one which will help us to further develop the great partnership which already exists between parents and teachers. Social Emotional Skills put to the test! We talk about teaching Social Emotional Skills to our children but how do we know if we are having any success? I know because I have just returned from camp with 49 of our Year 6 students. What we as teachers and the staff of Forest Lodge Camp saw was an excellent display of getting along, persistence, courage, resilience, confidence, responsible decision making and self-control displayed by each child from the moment they arrived to the moment they left. A huge congratulations to each parent and teacher who has helped shape these children into the amazing young people they are.

SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST IS NOW AVAILABLE: Stacey is available for children who are presenting with social, emotional or behavioural difficulties. This service is completely covered by Medicare. To access this service please speak to your child’s teacher or you can email or speak to Mr Nigel ~ Deputy Principal who will provide you with details on how to refer your child. [email protected]

BEBRAS Australia Computational Thinking Challenge

On Wednesday 15th March, many of our Years 3 to 6 students took part in the Bebras Australia Computational Thinking Challenge. This required the children to work alone or in pairs to solve a series of 15 challenges within a time limit. The challenges tested the students’ logic, problem solving and computational thinking. Results will be available by the end of March...hopefully some of our students will make it onto the Bebras Australia Honour Roll.

“It’s challenging but it’s fun at the same time. Sometimes we don’t understand the question but when we read the question a few times we started to understand. There were letters and a code and you had to figure out four names using the code.” By Alexia and Elise, year 3. “We had to use our coding skills. We had to read the question and understand the question. I liked trying to complete the challenges within a time limit.” by Charlie D and Jack M, year 5 “I literally think I know how to do this.” by Rhys, year 3

Year 1 Family Mass We welcome the students of Year 1 and their families to 5pm Mass this Sunday.

All Welcome!

First Reconciliation Please remember in your prayers the children of the Year 3 who are currently

preparing for their First Reconciliation. The St Finbar’s students will celebrate on the 28th March, and the children from other schools will begin their preparations next week

and celebrate in May. We aim for a deeper understanding of choices made, and the need for forgiveness in

our lives. The children are encouraged to reflect on times when less than good choices are made, and our need to make peace but also on discovering the goodness

in themselves, and we thank their teachers for supporting the children in this part of their faith journey.

School Principal Mr Patrick Berlingeri 9592 4479

Sunday 19th March Third Sunday of Lent The Jewish people worshipped at the Temple in Jerusalem. The Samaritans to the north worshipped on Mount Gerizem. But Jesus says to the woman of Samaria: ‘Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth.’ We do this by acknowledging Jesus Christ as our sacred site. Jesus is where God is to be found. In his earthly ministry this was around places like the well in Samaria. As Risen Lord, he is to be found in those in dire need, and in the Heavenly Bread. In both cases we need to incline the body as an act of worship: in the case of the needy, by doing something practical; in the case of the Heavenly Bread, by genuflecting, bowing, before the Blessed Sacrament. We could pause for a moment to reorientate ourselves to the Sacred Site who is the Risen Christ, acknowledging him as indeed the ‘Saviour of the World’. © Fr Michael Tate

Community News

Thank you

Kiwanis would like to thank parishioners who have very generously donated their used spectacles to help

others see, especially over the last few weeks when multiple boxes of glasses

have been donated. Pre-loved glasses are delivered to an

aid agency where they are sorted, graded, packaged and sent to developing countries. Eye care

professionals will then distribute them to children and adults with visual

impairment. Children and adult glasses, in good condition, of all shapes and

sizes are needed.
