Prize Giving 2013The end of term celebrations on Thursday 4 July marked the end of another extremely successful year for St George’s. The day began with a moving Valedictory Service for the Upper Sixth leavers, supported by staff and family. Then, for the fi rst time in 14 years, Prize Giving was held for the entire school in one location. The Sports Hall had been transformed into a wonderful venue to celebrate the successes of the girls. We were delighted to be joined by adventurer Debra Searle MBE as the Guest of Honour who spoke with great passion about the lessons learnt whilst rowing across the Atlantic Ocean. Congratulations to the prizewinners but also to each and every girl and member of staff who has made this year so special; we have achieved so much and look forward to the next year with great excitement.

Sports Award Evening We were delighted to welcome former Georgian and Sky Sports presenter Kirsty Gallacher as Guest of Honour at the inaugural Sports Award Evening on Friday 28 June 2013.

It was a superb evening that not only celebrated the individual achievements of the girls, but also highlighted how much the sport at St George’s has developed over the recent years.

Colours were awarded in addition to awards for Most Improved Player and Player of the Season for each sport. The evening ended with special awards for service to sport in the whole school.

Congratulations to all the teams represented.

The annual Music for a Summer Evening was, as ever, the perfect way to end the musical term and bid farewell to the Upper Sixth musicians who have supported the department so faithfully over the last years; our grateful thanks go to Alexandra Baker, Victoria Cooper, Sophie Pilley, Helen Sale, Nalin Tanchotikul and Sasha Tyan. It was lovely to see so many current and future parents, as well as many former Georgian musicians in the audience.

The Second Year ‘St George’s Players’ staged a flamboyant, funny and fabulous production of The Canterbury Tales on Tuesday 25 June. The Second Year have also been studying the text as part of their English curriculum. Congratulations to all the girls who took part and to Mrs Dorey for directing the play.

House General Knowledge

Congratulations to Becket House who romped to victory in the House General Knowledge Competition on the last day of term. The level of play was exceedingly high and everyone was impressed by the knowledge of the girls. Congratulations to Laura Beaumont, Celina Brar and Emily Dominey who made up the Becket Team. A special thank you also goes to Mr Naeem who composed the superb quiz.

National Chinese Calligraphy Competition

Antonina Kudryashova (3X) has been awarded 3rd place in a national calligraphy competition for non-native speakers of Chinese, organised by the UK Association for the Promotion of Chinese Education. She beat nearly 840 other entrants to gain the top 3 place. Mrs Baldwin, Chinese teacher at St George’s, entered Antoninia into the competition after her excellent progress. Our congratulations go to Antonina on her achievement.

Careers Talk

Our thanks go to current parent Mr Sedgwick, who gave an insightful and thought-provoking talk on careers in investment banking to girls in the Fourth Year and Lower Sixth on Monday 24 June. It highlighted the opportunities available and also the preparation required and qualifications needed to pursue careers in this competitive industry. The girls asked lots of questions and thoroughly benefited from the discussion.

Self Defence & First Aid

During the last week of term, the Lower Sixth had the opportunity to learn key skills in an afternoon of First Aid Skills. The Fifth Year also participated in an afternoon workshop, this time in self-defence. Both year groups appreciated the usefulness of the courses and came aways feeling confident that they could put into practice what they had learnt.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

The Silver and Bronze expeditions for Duke of Edinburgh took place from 28-30 June in the New Forest. The expeditions all went smoothly and the girls are congratulated on their positive attitude and commitment.

The Second Year Charity Quiz was a closely fought contest with very few marks separating the entries. Congratulations to the following winners: in first place, Celina Brar and Phoebe Solon who win £20 vouchers each. In second place, Lucy Sedgwick and Lavinia Jones who win £15 vouchers each and in third place, Stephanie Bankole and Tiggy Wainwright-Parker who win £5 voucher each. The top performers in the Second Year were Grace Wiszowaty and Jade Pusey who get a £5 voucher each. Staff winners were Mr Sharkey and Mrs Potter who were awarded bottle of wine each. Over £120 was raised.

Second Year Charity Quiz

We are delighted to confirm that nearly £2500 has been raised over the year by the girls in different charity ventures. Hardly a week goes by without a charity event at St George’s.

Nearly £700 has been raised for Cancer Research, nearly £900 for Water Aid. £190 for Red Nose Day, £235 for the Daffodil Appeal. Just under £100 for Serena Hall and £125 for the Alexander Devine Trust and Rosie’s Rainbow. Other charities have also benefited including Dundlod School in India and Youthline in Bracknell.

Charity Update

On the evening of Wednesday 26 June , 40 young ladies from the Third Year were whizzed off Don Beni’s in Winkfield Row, on a year group outing. This was organised to thank the girls for being such a incredibly responsive year group. The evening was much fun and I wish all the girls much success as they continue in their studies in the Fourth Year. I have every confidence that they will continue to excel in their studies. They are all indeed a credit to themselves and to our school. Mrs Dourountakis

Third Year Outing

On Tuesday 25 June the EAL teachers and their Sixth Form students celebrated Mrs Bruce’s retirement at her house in Woking. We had a fun evening of cooking, chatting and singing in a homely atmosphere. Under the careful watch of Mrs Bruce, everybody got involved in making the celebration dinner and we learned some very useful recipes. All of us particularly enjoyed making the Pimm’s drink and decorating cakes in the style of the British flag. At the end of the evening, we sang a surprise song to Mrs Bruce to tell her how much she will be missed here. In return, she served us with her well-known shortbread and even shared the secret recipe with us! We all wish to thank Mrs Bruce for the lovely evening and for being such a caring and committed teacher during her time at St George’s. Marija Djacic

New Sports Clothing

Direct Clothing are pleased to announce that from mid-September sports clothing, previously only available online, will be available to purchase direct through the school shop. These items include baselayers, base leggings and hoodies.

GCSE DRAMA MOCK

HOUSE TENNIS 2013 For the first time for a number of years we managed to get through Junior and Senior House tennis with only a couple of drops of rain towards the end of the second day. The Junior teams took to the courts on Monday morning with determination. There were many matches that went down to the wire and comments of ‘this is better than Wimbledon’ were heard around the courts. Due to the closeness of the matches, by the end of the day there was only 6 wins difference between the 1st and 4th teams respectively. The results were as follows:-

1st Darwin - 15 wins, 2nd Becket - 14 wins3rd Alexander - 10 wins, 4th Churchill - 9 wins

These results spurred on the Senior teams and the girls came out with all guns blazing on the second day. This time, however, it was Churchill House that started off with some outstanding play and moved quickly into a strong position. However, the other 3 houses ‘dug in’ and every point was played in a fierce but competitive fashion. The final match of the competition summed this up when having reached 3-3, the final game drew in the crowds and after many deuces finally came to a close with all 4 girls exhausted but knowing that they gave everything for their respective Houses. After the final scores were added up in the Senior competition the results were as follows:-

1st Churchill - 17 wins, 2nd Darwin - 13 wins3rd Becket - 11 wins, 4th Alexander - 7 wins

So after all of the wins were added together the final results were:

1st Darwin - 28 wins, 2nd Churchill - 27 wins3rd Becket - 25 wins, 4th Alexander - 17 wins
