St George’s, Ascot offers a broad and stimulating all-

round education that is a modern, dynamic and exciting

experience where the pupils are supported and

encouraged within an environment of diverse academic

and cultural enrichment.

Whilst there is an academically challenging, balanced,

core syllabus for each Year Group, it is always tailored as

necessary to meet individual needs. Class sizes are small,

enabling the teachers to identify the academic needs of

each girl as an individual and adapt their lessons, so as to

achieve the optimum results. Expectations are high; the

girls are nurtured and encouraged to give of their best, no

matter what their ability level. Lessons are suitably

challenging without the pressure of an academic hot

house environment. The dedicated, inspiring and caring

staff are all specialists in their own academic fields. Staff

give willingly and generously of their free time to provide

an excellent system of additional out-of-lessons support.

First Year

In the First Year at St George’s, all girls study Art, Drama,

English, French, Geography, History, ICT, Mathematics,

Music, Religious Studies, Science and Study Skills. In

addition, they have designated weekly curriculum time

for PSHC and PE.

Second Year

In the Second Year the curriculum is extended to include

Latin in place of Study Skills.

Third Year

In the Third Year, Spanish is added to the curriculum and

some girls may choose a one-year course in Classical

Civilisation rather than Latin.

Additional

Girls may study an ‘exotic’ language as a paid extra.

Languages available include Chinese, German, Italian,

Japanese, Mandarin, Russian and Turkish. Girls may

also have paid extra support lessons in Study Skills.

There are also opportunities to have individual coaching

in squash and tennis, various dance disciplines, musical

instruments (including theory), and speech and drama.

Curriculum

GCSE

While most girls take ten GCSE subjects, each girl is

advised individually as to the appropriate number to take,

taking into consideration her strengths and weaknesses

and any regular commitments to extra-curricular activities,

such as sport, music or drama. We believe that it is better

to aim for quality rather than quantity, as good grades for

university applications are essential.

All girls take English, English Literature, Mathematics,

Science (either Core and Additional or three separate

sciences), a Modern Language and a Humanity (chosen

from Geography, History and Religious Studies). In

addition, girls choose up to two further subjects: courses

offered include a second Humanity, a second Modern

Language, Art, Business and Communication Systems,

Drama, Physical Education, Latin, Music and Textiles.

A Level

Girls study four or five AS level subjects in the Lower

Sixth, before going on to study three or four subjects at

A2 level in the Upper Sixth. A full A-level is AS plus A2.

In addition, girls are able to choose from a wide

programme of courses which enable them to develop

essential transferable skills in areas such as

communication and IT.

A-level subjects offered are: Art, Biology, Business

Studies, Chemistry, Classical Civilisation, Drama and

Theatre Studies, Economics, English Literature, Film

Studies, Further Mathematics, Geography, History,

History of Art, Modern Languages (French, Spanish and

other languages by arrangement), Music, Photography,

Physics, Politics, Psychology, Religious Studies, Textiles

and Critical Thinking (AS).

Each subject taken at AS level will be examined in

modular examinations during the Lower Sixth year. Each

A2 subject will also consist of modules, one of which will

be synoptic. Students will be awarded university entrance

points for any subject taken at A-level or taken as AS but

not carried through to A2. An AS is worth 50% of the

points awarded for the same grade at A-level.

Girls may also study for the AQA Baccalaureate, in

addition to A-levels. This involves the well-respected

Extended Project Qualification, as well as Critical Thinking

AS level and a programme of enrichment activities and

community service. Grades are awarded based on A-level

grades plus the Extended Project.

International Students

Depending on a girl’s level of English, she may be

required to have paid extra lessons in English as an

Additional Language (EAL).

University Destinations 2007 - 2012 EnrichmentWe believe that school does not end with the last lesson of

the day and that enrichment out of the classroom is a very

powerful complement to our curriculum. In addition to

the regular clubs, academic clinics and educational trips

on offer to the girls, St George’s offers a wealth of

opportunities to broaden the girls’ cultural horizons.

We endeavour to ensure that every girl experiences at

least one ballet, opera and classical concert during her

time here. Every girl will have performed in a House play,

taken part in declamation and public-speaking, raised

substantial amounts for charity and will also have

experienced formal dinners with staff, parents and

students from other schools. These are rites of passage

that young women cannot experience in a classroom, but

are so important to their development.

We recognise the importance of socialising with other

schools and regularly arrange socials and activities

with local schools such as Eton, Harrow, Radley

and Papplewick.

St George’s prides itself on the excellent range of activities

on offer to the boarders in the evening and at weekends.

We aim to make the activities challenging and fun and to

include important cultural experiences as well as informal

days out.

Evening and Weekend Activities include

Art Masterclasses with the Artist in Residence, Baking,

Board Games, Candle making, Cinema Club, Cookery,

Creative Bag making, Eco-fashion, Horse-Riding,

Needlework & Knitting, Prep clinic with the Resident

Tutors, Sports Fixtures, Sports Hall Games, Visiting the

Elderly and Zumba.

In addition, external trips and activities take place every

weekend. Each term your daughter may have the

opportunity to take part in activities such as an Army

Assault Course, a Ceilidh with Eton, a Duck Tour of

London, exploring Oxford, fireworks at Ascot Racecourse,

a ramble in Runnymede, a Shakespeare Play at the RSC,

Stratford, shopping in Marlow or Windsor, going to

Thorpe Park or a trip to Whipsnade Zoo.

School DayBoarders get up at 7.15am every weekday morning and

breakfast is at 7.30am. After breakfast girls have 20

minutes before they need to be in their Form Room for

registration – during which time they are expected to

make their bed and tidy their dorm, see the Housemistress

if they need to and get their books for the day. Day girls

should arrive in school in time for morning registration.

Supper is from 6.30pm and after supper there are

different activities on different days of the week: these

include Sport Clubs, Art Club, and Drama Club.

Bed times vary according to the year group, starting

at 9.00pm.

Tailored BoardingSt George’s has a unique boarding structure known as

Tailored Boarding, which allows you and your daughter to

find the best combination for her needs, which can adapt

to the demands of the school activities on a termly basis.

In addition to the traditional Full Boarding and Day

places, St George’s offers girls the option of boarding

four, five or six nights a week, choosing the nights

depending on her commitments in school. Tailored

Boarding encourages girls to get the best out of school

and home life.

A weekly bus service to and from Central London departs

from St George’s on Friday evening and returns to school

on Sunday evening, allowing London boarders the

opportunity to maximise time at home over the weekend.

Admissions ProcessApplying to St George’s

We try to make the procedure of applying for a place at

St George’s as straightforward as possible. Admissions

There are three key entry points to St George’s. We take

two forms in the First Year (age 11+), and an additional

form into the Third Year (age 13+). The next main intake

is at Sixth Form (age 16+). Girls may also join at other

times, but we are not able to accept students into the

Fifth Year or Upper Sixth.

Entrance to the First Year and Sixth Form is by our own

entrance examinations. Entrance in the Third Year is by

ISEB Common Entrance.

We have two Open Mornings each year, one in September

and one in April. From Year 4 upwards, girls also have the

opportunity to visit St George’s for our optional

Educational Days with Boarding Taster nights. These

take place on a Saturday, once per term. The Educational

Days are very informal occasions and are an excellent way

for your daughter to become familiar with the school,

staff and other girls applying for a place. Each Educational

Day has a different theme run by an academic department

in the school, enabling you to choose the subjects that will

most appeal to your daughter. Please check the events page

on the website for details of the next Educational Day.

The admissions process at St George’s is outlined below:

to spend a day with her prospective year group

on the last Saturday in January prior to entry. 13+

Entrance Examinations

The aim of the assessment process is to identify

potential. We are looking for well-rounded girls with

a genuine interest in education in the broadest sense of

the word, with interests that stretch beyond the confines

of the academic curriculum. The school has strong

traditions in music, drama, art, community activities and

sport. There are many extra-curricular activities, all of

which are important in developing a well-balanced,

confident individual.

Admission to St George’s is by selective examination,

interview and report from your daughter’s current school.

Entry into the First Year (11+)

Registration for entry at 11+ should ideally be received by

the end of October prior to the year of entry. Girls will

attend an Admissions Day in the November of Year 6 and

in the following January will be invited to sit the St

George's Entrance Examinations in Mathematics, English

and Verbal Reasoning. As part of the Entrance

Examinations girls will also have a short interview with

the Headmistress or a senior member of staff and will

be asked to prepare a short (three-minute) presentation

on a subject of their choice. Sample papers are available

upon request.

We take into account, too, the report from your daughter’s

current school and her additional interests and talents.

Girls for whom English is not the first language are

required to take a Language Proficiency Test.

Once an offer has been made and accepted, girls will

be invited to attend the Freshers’ Day in June to meet

their tutors and peers, prior to starting at St George’s

in September.

Entry into the Third Year (13+)

For 13+ entry, girls will sit the Common Entrance

Examination at their Preparatory School held in June for

entry in the following September. For girls seeking entry

at 13+ who are not being prepared for Common Entrance,

please contact the Registrar, Mrs Lloyd, on 01344 629920.

Girls will be invited to spend a day at St George’s and

also to stay overnight in the boarding house if they are

applying for a boarding place.

Scholarship examinations at 13+ are set by St George’s

and will take place in the May prior to entry, at

St George’s.

We take into account, too, the report from your

daughter’s previous school and her additional interests

and talents. Girls for whom English is not the first

language are required to take a Language Proficiency Test.

Entry into the Sixth Form (16+)

If you are considering applying for the Sixth Form at

St George’s we invite you to arrange a private appointment

to have a tour of the school and to meet with the Assistant

Head (Head of Sixth Form). A provisional offer may then

be made after an interview with the Head of Sixth Form

which will be dependent on your daughter’s GCSE results.

The requirement for entry is at least six A* - C grades at

GCSE or equivalent, with at least a B in any subject to be

taken at A Level.

Scholarship examinations for entry into the Sixth Form

are set by St George’s and will take place in October prior

to entry, at St George’s.

International Students

International students are invited to apply for entry to

St George’s. For details of the relevant assessment

process please contact the Registrar, Mrs Ros Lloyd,

on 01344 629920 or by email on admissions@stgeorges-

ascot.org.uk.

All international students are required to sit entrance

examinations at their current school, the local British

Council office or at St George’s. All international students

will be required to sit papers in English. A Level students

may also be required to sit papers in the subjects they

wish to study.

International Students who do not have the required

English Language qualifications for entry into a British

University will be required to study for the IELTS

examination in the Sixth Form.

It is a legal requirement that international students have a

local guardian who lives in England. The guardian should

be someone who speaks good English and who can host

your daughter during half terms, exeats, at the beginning

and end of terms or in the case of an emergency. This is a

standard requirement in UK independent schools.

Purpose of Scholarships

Scholarships are designed to reward excellence and to

celebrate exceptional talent. In recognition of this

achievement, the scholar is offered a reduction in the

tuition fees up to the end of GCSE or the Sixth Form,

whilst at St George’s. In addition, music scholars are

offered free tuition in musical instruments. Details of the

arrangements will be sent to all who express an interest.

Scholarships are conditional on a girl’s satisfactory

conduct and contribution to the school. Where

appropriate, an All-Round Scholarship may be awarded.

Scholarships are worth 10% of tuition fees. In addition,

in exceptional cases, an Exhibition, normally worth 5%

of tuition fees, may be awarded to girls with talent in

one or more of the areas outlined above.

We encourage parents of Scholars who anticipate that

they will experience difficulty in meeting the balance of

the tuition fees to apply at the same time for one of the

school’s means-tested bursaries described below, when

they register their child.

Scholarships at 11+

Academic Scholarships are awarded on the basis of performance in the School’s own 11+

Entrance Examinations.

Art Scholarships are awarded to girls with genuineinterest in and enthusiasm for the subject. Candidates

should submit a portfolio of no more than six sheets of

work, some of which should demonstrate independent

study. It is very important that the work is created from a

desire to make Art, rather than a need for a scholarship

portfolio. There should be evidence of work in a variety of

media, including three-dimensional pieces, which should

be photographed. Candidates should also submit an A4

sketchbook, demonstrating ability to record from

observation. There will be an informal interview with

members of the Art Department when candidates will be

expected to discuss their own work, as well as the work of

other artists. The Art scholar will be expected to make

a strong contribution to the artistic life of the school. A

scholar will be expected to take at least one Art subject

at GCSE; if she does not, she will forfeit the scholarship.

Music Scholarships are awarded after audition andinterview by the Director of Music. Candidates should

demonstrate potential to reach the highest grades on at

least one instrument. Music scholars are expected to take

a leading part in the musical life of the school. It is a

condition of the award that they continue to do so.

Music Awards are also available for girls who have not

reached Grade 2 but who show talent and a great

interest in music.

Sports Scholarships are awarded to a girl with exceptional ability and promise in at least one of the major

sports played at St George’s. Girls will be assessed for

their level of skill and fitness, as well as ability. They

should have achieved a high standard in school and club

teams. In addition to the normal references required,

supporting references from school, club and regional

coaches (if applicable) are recommended. The Sports

scholar will be expected to demonstrate a positive attitude

towards school sport and to maintain good conduct on

and off the pitch. Continued contribution to the sporting

life of the school is required for retention of this award.

Evaluation of a candidate for the award of an Art, Music or

Sport Scholarship will take place during the Autumn Term

before entry. In addition to the Head’s reference, specialist

references from the appropriate Heads of Department

are expected.

All scholarships are seen as prestigious awards and are

worth 10% of tuition fees. They may be further enhanced

by means-tested bursaries.

Scholarships at 11+ are awarded for the five-year course

leading up to GCSE. A scholar is expected to work to the

best of her ability and to be a good ambassador for the

school. In exceptional circumstances, and after a period

of warning, a scholarship may be revoked if a girl does

not maintain the standards expected by the school of a

scholar in her field.

Scholarships at 13+(available to Internal and External candidates)

Academic Scholarships are awarded on the basis ofperformance in the St George’s 13+ Scholarship

and theory test. Music scholars are expected to take a

major sports played at St George’s. Girls will be assessed

chosen subject papers. These scholarships will be

awarded only to candidates who achieve a suitably

academic standard in all papers. In addition, a

satisfactory performance in GCSE or equivalent

examinations is expected.

Additional scholarships may be awarded post GCSEs to

any outstanding internal candidates who have not already

received a Sixth Form Academic Scholarship.

Art Scholarships Candidates will be required to present a portfolio and attend an interview with the Head of Art.

Candidates will be expected to demonstrate enthusiasm

for and commitment to art, and will be expected to make

a contribution to the artistic life of the school throughout

their at time at the school. Art Scholars will be expected to

study at least one Art and Design A Level. Art scholarships

will be awarded only to pupils who have passed the

school’s entrance requirements for the Sixth Form.

Drama Scholarships Drama scholarships are awarded tooutstanding girls who act with exceptional ability or have

a proven talent for the technical side of the Theatre.

Candidates will be required to give a short performance

together with an interview with the Head of Drama. They

will be expected to demonstrate enthusiasm for and

commitment to drama, and will be expected to make a

contribution to school drama throughout their time at the

school. Candidates for the Sixth Form Drama scholarship

will also be required to sit a scholarship paper, details of

which can be obtained from the Head of Drama. Drama

scholarships will be awarded only to pupils who have

attained the school’s entrance requirements. They will be

expected to study Drama and Theatre Studies A Level.

Music Scholarships Music scholarships are awarded to

outstanding musicians who play any instrument or sing

with exceptional ability. Candidates will be required to

perform a short recital on their instrument(s) together

with possible practical tests. They will also be interviews

with the Director of Music. Candidates will be expected to

demonstrate enthusiasm for and commitment to music,

and will be expected to make a contribution to the musical

life of the school throughout their time at the school.

Music scholarships will be awarded only to pupils who

have attained the school’s entrance requirements.

Sports Scholarships Sports scholarships are awarded tooutstanding, all-round sportswomen who have achieved

a high level of competence in one or more sports.

Candidates will be assessed and interviewed by the

Director of Sport, and will be expected to demonstrate

qualities of leadership and team play of a very high order.

They will also be required to write a letter of application,

outlining their specialised talents. They will be expected to

make a contribution to the sporting life of the school

throughout their time at the school. Sports scholarships

will be awarded only to pupils who have attained the

school’s entrance requirements.

Scholarships at 16+ are awarded for the duration of the

Sixth Form, with the proviso that scholars are working at

the required standard. A scholar is expected to work to the

best of her ability and to be a good ambassador for

the school. In exceptional circumstances, and after a

period of warning, a scholarship may be revoked if a girl

does not maintain the standards expected by the school

of a scholar in her field.

Fees & Financial InformationA non-returnable fee of £100 is charged when a girl is

registered with the school. A deposit is payable when the

offer of a place at the school is accepted. This is currently

£1,000 for a day pupil and £1,800 for a boarding place.

Normally the balance of the deposit is returned after

deduction of extras following the girl’s final term. The

deposit will be retained, should the accepted place not

be taken up.

Extra Expenses

General text books and normal stationery requirements,

along with Personal Accident Insurance, are included in

the fees. Examination fees are charged at cost, and text

books, which are annotated by a pupil for her own use are

extra charges to the bill.

Other optional additional expenses will be at the

discretion of the parents. These include such items as

music lessons, specific learning tuition, trips to concerts or

the theatre, outdoor expeditions, and societies and clubs.

Occasional Boarding

Day girls may board on an occasional basis at a charge of

£55 per night, when there is spare accommodation

available in school.

Payment

School fees are payable in advance by the first day of each

term. A full term’s notice is required before the removal of

a pupil from the school; otherwise, a full term’s fees will

be payable in lieu of notice.

Advance payment of fees

The school operates a scheme which gives a tax-free

saving to those who pay in advance towards their

daughter’s fees. We can provide estimates of either the

sum required to cover a known amount of fees, or

calculate the amount of fees which would be provided by

depositing a given sum.

Payment by Direct Debit

Arrangements can also be made for payment of fees by

monthly Direct Debit. Please contact the Bursar for details.

Childcare Vouchers

Childcare vouchers can be used towards the boarding

component of a girl’s school fees until 1 September

following her 15th birthday. Please contact the Finance

Manager for further information.

Scholarships and Bursaries

Scholarships are awarded for academic merit. These

awards will be either for the period up to a pupil’s GCSE

examinations or for the Sixth Form. All scholarships

awards will be based on the day fee.

Academic, Art, Music and Sport Scholarships are available

in the First Year. Academic, Art, Drama, Music and Sport

are available at 13+. Academic Sixth Form Scholarships

are applied for in the Autumn Term of the Fifth Year. Art,

Drama, Music and Sport Scholarships are also available.

All-Rounder Scholarships may also be offered.

A limited number of means-tested bursaries are available

to support girls whose parents are not able to afford the

Location & TransportDirections

When using satellite navigation please ensure that

St George’s Lane is selected. There is limited access to

St George’s from Wells Lane.

By Road

From M3, junction 3, take the A322 towards Bracknell.

At the second roundabout take second exit A332 towards

Windsor. After approximately 2¾ miles, at the next

roundabout take third exit, A329 (High Street) and

continue straight over the next roundabout. Turn right

into St George’s Lane and then take the first left into

Wells Lane. St George’s School is on the right-hand side.

From M4, junction 6, take the A322 towards Windsor,

then the A308 (Goslar Way and Osborne Road), rejoining

the A332 towards Ascot. Continue on this road for

approximately 3½ miles through Windsor Great Park and

take the first exit at the twin miniroundabouts. Continue

on the A330 (Winkfield Road), passing Ascot Racecourse

on your right. At the crossroads continue straight across

into St George’s Lane and then take the first left into Wells

Lane. St George’s School is on the right-hand side.

By Rail

Ascot Railway Station is approximately five minutes by

taxi from St George’s, and is approximately 45 minutes

from Waterloo.

Transport

London Bus

St George’s operates a weekly transport service to and

from Central London, collecting from South Kensington

and Chiswick on a Sunday evening and dropping off in

the same locations on Friday evening. Further information

Local Transport

St George’s currently operates two local minibus routes,

one in conjunction with First Choice Bus and one with

Ascot Cars. The girls are collected from several different

locations as listed below. We are always happy to discuss

alternative or additional routes with new parents who

would like their daughter to travel to school by minibus.

The routes are reviewed annually to ensure that the

quickest routes are on offer. The current cost per return

journey is £9 per person per day.

considered for selection as a pupil at the School.

administering its list of prospective pupils and administering its selection procedures and we consent to the processing of our child’s

3 In the event that our child is offered a place at the School, such an offer will be subject to the School’s terms and conditions for the

provision of educational services, which will bind us in the event that we accept the place.
