How to Receive the Eucharist In the United States, the proper way to receive the Eucharist at communion time is to approach the altar as is customary. The most common practice is to stand in cue. However, just west of us at the Poor Clare monastery, the practice is to kneel (or stand if unable to kneel) at the communion rail in front of the sanctuary. This practice is also found elsewhere in Arizona and throughout the United States. Prior to reception, the communicant makes a slight bow of the head. When the minister says “Body/Blood of Christ”, we reply “Amen”. If receiving the Body on the tongue, be sure to open the mouth and extend the tongue so that the host can be simply placed on the tongue. If receiving in the hand, place one hand atop the oth-er and then use the opposite hand to place the host in the mouth immediately. Do not walk away with the Body of Christ; for this is often a signal that the recipient is not Catholic and you may be stopped. When receiving the Blood, again bow the head, say “Amen”, and grasp firmly the communion cup, bring it to the mouth in a slow, even motion, and drink only a small amount of the Pre-cious Blood before safely handing the cup back to the minister. The communicant then returns to his seat and spends a time in prayer and communion with the Savior who said: “Whoever eats my body and drinks my blood truly has life within him.”

A few reminders: One should have no other food or gum in his mouth at communion time. One should also cease from eating/drinking an hour prior to communion time. If someone in the congre-gation returns to his seat with the Eucharist, please kindly ask the person to give you the Body and consume it yourself; in such cases, the person is usually not Catholic but stood in the communion line without knowing what to do with the host. Those holding small in-fants or using canes/walkers should only be given communion on the tongue since the communicant needs to use his hands to hold the child/walker. The common practice of approaching the minister and requesting a blessing is not part of communion during Mass and is in fact forbidden in the Diocese of Phoenix. This is not the proper time when, in fact, all congregants will receive a blessing at the end of Mass. This practice, which seems to have developed in the 1970s as a way of “welcoming” non-Catholics, unfortunately blurs our liturgical practice if not also our Eucharistic theology.

Cómo Recibir la Eucaristía En los Estados Unidos, la forma correcta de recibir la Eucaristía en el momento de la comunión es acercarse al altar como es costumbre. La práctica más común es permanecer en el lugar. Sin embargo, justo al oeste de nosotros en el monasterio de Poor Clare, la práctica es arrodi-llarse (o pararse si no puede arrodillarse) en el barandal de la cerca de la comunión frente al santuario. Esta práctica también se encuentra en otras partes de Arizona y en todo Estados Unidos. Antes de la recep-ción, el comulgante hace una leve inclinación de la cabeza. Cuando el ministro dice "Cuerpo / Sangre de Cristo", respondemos "Amén". Si reci-be el cuerpo en la lengua, asegúrese de abrir la boca y extender la len-gua para que el ministro pueda colocarla. Si recibe en la mano, coloque una mano sobre la otra y luego use la mano opuesta para colocar la hostia en la boca de inmediato. No te vayas con el Cuerpo de Cristo; ya que esto es a menudo una señal de que el destinatario no es católico y puede ser detenido. Cuando reciba la Sangre, vuelva a inclinar la cabe-za, diga “Amén”, tome firmemente la copa de la comunión, llévela a la boca con un movimiento lento y firme, y beba solo una pequeña canti-dad de la Sangre Preciosa antes de devolver la copa con seguridad al ministro Luego, el comulgante regresa a su asiento y pasa un tiempo en oración y comunión con el Salvador, quien dijo: "Quien come mi cuerpo y bebe mi sangre, realmente tiene vida dentro de él".

Aquellos que tienen bebés pequeños o que usan bordones / andadores solo deben recibir comu-nión en la lengua, ya que el comulgante debe usar sus manos para sos-tener al niño / andador. La práctica común de acercarse al ministro y solicitar una bendición no es parte de la comunión durante la misa y, de hecho, está prohibida en la Diócesis de Phoenix. Este no es el momento adecuado cuando, de hecho, todos los feligreses recibirán una bendi-ción al final de la misa. Esta práctica, que parece haberse desarrolla-do en la década de los 70s como una forma de "acoger" a los no ca-tólicos, desafortunadamente empaña nuestra práctica litúrgica, si no también nuestra teología eucarística.
