TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Vigésimo Tercer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

SEPTEMBER 8th 2019

POST-SUMMER CHALLENGES With any luck, summer delights will continue a while past last weekend’s Labor Day: refreshing recre-ation (with maybe an occasional swim) or enjoyable relaxation on the deck (with tasty outdoor grilling). Truth is, for some of us, this year’s Labor Day came way too early. With many schools back in session for a while already, mealtimes and driving schedules needed readjustment to coordinate youth sports with adult commitments. Some religious education and parish programs resumed, too. No surprise, then, that this weekend’s scriptures sound a little like post-summer challenges. For instance, Wisdom reminds us that be-lievers in God can never be content with “timid delib-erations” and “unsure plans.” Paul challenges longtime friend and follower Philemon to “let the good you do be voluntary.” Jesus instructs “great crowds” traveling with him—including us—on three things necessary for all true disciples to accomplish. On this early autumn weekend, our scriptures describe disciples’ lifelong labors. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

PASTOR’S MESSAGE —Matthew Cormier MENSAJE DEL PARROCO– Matthew Cormier

SOLEMNITY OF ST. PETER CLAVER, Patron of Diocese of Lake Charles

September 9 is the Memorial of St. Peter Claver. Since he is the principal patron of the Diocese of Lake Charles, his memorial is observed through-out the Diocese on Sunday as a Solemnity. St. Peter Claver was not able to change the world, but did what one man could—with God’s grace. Born in Spain in 1580, he later joined the Socie-ty of Jesus and traveled as a missionary to the “New World” where he spent the rest of his days as a “slave of slaves”. He devoted his ministry to saving the souls of African slaves. He worked for the abolition of the slave trade and although he was unsuccessful in that regard, this did not stop him from ministering to their physical and spiritual needs. He would board the slave ships as they entered the harbor at Cartagena (which is in modern day Columbia) and offer what re-freshments he could afford; he would care for the sick and dying, give religious instruction be-fore administering the Sacraments. It is estimated that he baptized approximately 300,000 souls. Even though much of the world considered these human beings to be only prop-erty, St. Peter Claver recognized the image of God in them. He was harassed and persecuted constantly because of his service. We have much to learn from his example. Even in our time, rac-ism and different forms of slavery exist. Many are not treated as worthy of life and salvation, from the poor immigrant to the unborn and un-wanted child. St. Peter Claver’s tireless efforts to bring souls to Christ through baptism is a re-minder of the necessity of this sacrament. That baptism is necessary is taught by Christ and the apostles and reaffirmed by the Church in para-graphs 1257-1261 of the Catechism of the Catho-lic Church. Nevertheless, we are seeing more and more parents delaying baptism for their children or not baptizing them at all. This is sad indeed.

We must pray for the powerful intercession of St. Peter Claver.
