Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul Reading for next Sun., June 29, 2014

Theme: You are Peter, and I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven Breaking Open the Word: Suggested text for faith sharing Gospel from Matthew: Mt 16:13-19

When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Phi-

lippi he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that

the Son of Man is?”They replied, “Some say John the

Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of

the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say

that I am?” Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the

Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus said to him

in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For

flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my

heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter,

and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the

gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I

will give you the keys to the Kingdom of heaven.

Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in

heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be

loosed in heaven.”

Step One: Listen to the Word: As you listen to this

Scripture story today, what is one word or thought

that really struck you? What image do you take away

from this reading?

Step Two: Look into Your Life

Question for Children: Who do you say that Jesus

is?

Question for Youth: How does the way you live

your life show that you are a follower of Christ?

Question for Adults: Before the Resurrection, Peter denied Jesus three times. But in today’s Gospel, we hear about a Peter who has unshakable faith. He clearly proclaims that Jesus is Christ, the Son of the living God. What can you do to strengthen your faith and draw nearer to Christ?

When: Sunday, July 13, 2014 Time: 8AM Where: St. Ignatius New School Basement Help save a life by giving blood. Please call Doug Quinn at (516) 647-9252 with any ques-tions. What a terrific way to start off the summer by helping someone in need!

This Sunday is another special day in our Church, the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, otherwise known as Corpus Christi. The full name of this feast is Corpus et Sanguis Christi or The Body and Blood of Christ. "The feast of the Blessed Sacrament was established in 1246 by Bishop Robert de Thorte of Liege at the suggestion of St. Juliana of Mont Carvillon. [It was] extended to the universal Church by Pope Urban in 1264. The office composed by St. Thomas Aquinas and customary procession was ap-proved by Popes Martin V and Eugene IV. Celebrated in June, the first Sunday after the feast of the Trin-ity." (Modern Catholic Dictionary, by John A. Hardon, S.J.) St. Juliana, a Belgian nun in Retinne, lived at the time of St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Louis. She re-ceived this inspiration from Our Lord for the following reasons: 1) that the Catholic doctrine receive aid from the institution of this festival at a time when the faith of the world was growing cold and heresies were increasingly present; 2) that the faithful who love and seek truth and piety may be enabled to draw from this source of life new strength and vigor to walk continually in the way of virtue; 3) that irreverence and sacrile-gious behavior towards the Divine Majesty in this adorable Sacrament may, by sincere and profound adora-tion, be extirpated and repaired; 4) to announce to the Christian world His will that the feast be observed. (Full Brief of Pope Urban IV in The Blessed Eucharist, Fr. Michael Muller, C.S.S.R., 1867; republished by TAN Publishers, Rockford, IL 1994. What are the appropriate signs of reverence with respect to the Body and Blood of Christ? According to our Catholic tradition, one should “genuflect in the presence of the tabernacle (Gold Box) con-taining the reserved sacrament. If you cannot genuflect because of age or a disability, a profound bow is ac-ceptable. It is also appropriate for the assembly to greet each other in the gathering space of the Church (vestibule) but it is inappropriate to speak in loud or boisterous tones in the body of the Church, because the Lord is present in the tabernacle. The Church requires everyone to fast at least 1 hr. before receiving the body and blood of Christ as a sign of reverence and recollection. There are exceptions however, due to illness, age or health. Reverence for the Eucharist also includes wearing appropriate attire. Most especially during the sum-mer, we need to remember that our clothes are to reflect our reverence for God, the liturgy and our respect for one another. When we process to the altar for Holy Communion, we are to do so with rever-ence, love and awe as part of the Eucharistic procession of the faithful. This means that we are to 1) make a reverent bow of the head (only) just before receiving holy communion 2) receive either on the tongue or in the hand, at our discretion. If we receive in the hand, “we are not to approach with hands extended and fin-gers open wide. Rather make of your left hand a throne for your right as it is about to receive your King, and receive the Body of Christ in the fold of your hand, responding ‘Amen.’.... (You may place your dominant hand on the bottom and the other on top.) Take care that you do not even lose one piece of that which is more precious than gold or precious stones.”-Theodore of Mopsuestia 350AD 3) say Amen and not thank you or I believe. The word Amen is sufficient enough. It means “I believe”; and 4)consume the host imme-diately and walk back to your seat. We are not permitted to take communion by ourselves nor hand it to another person. Holy Communion is meant to be received not snitched. JULY 8, 2014 WORLD YOUTH DAY MEETING 7:30PM Any teen, young adult or adult who is interested in joining me to see Pope Francis at the next World Youth Day event in Poland July, 2016 is invited to an info meeting on Tuesday, July 8th in rooms E& F. COMUNIDAD HISPANA 6/22/14 CUERPO Y SANGRE DE CRISTO Editado por Ytala y Gabriel

¿Cómo voy a hacerlo?

Family Life Committee

Have you noticed some of the "Family Friendly" activities and events at St. Ignatius Loyola Parish over these recent months? (Family Mass, Night with St. Nick, Easter Egg giveaway etc.) They are put on courtesy of the recently formed Family Life Committee. We have more things planned and we'd love to do bigger and better things for the parish, but our small committee could really use some help! We are looking for people who can help us plan, shop, decorate, and most im-portantly, help out the day of our events. Impor-tant: because we are working with children and families, volunteers must be VIRTUS trained and approved (diocese child safety program). You can check the Diocese of Rockville Centre website www.drvc.org for training dates. In the meantime, if you would like to help, please con-tact Sue at 433-2634/ [email protected] or Suzanne at 653-1634/[email protected]

Peter’s Pence Collection—June 28th-29th

Next week our diocese will take up the Peter’s Pence Collection, which provides the Holy Father with the funds he needs to carry out his most important charitable works. The proceeds benefit the most disadvan-taged: victims of war, oppression, and natural disasters. Through your generosity, we can cast the peace of Christ upon the world.
