Dear Sisters and Brothers,

The experience of “King” is foreign to us Americans. We are familiar with “Burger King” and “King’s Jewelers”, but have little experience of “King” as a ruler of people or nations.

In our first reading from Daniel 7:13-14, the Prophet’s vision of kingship was clearly not of this world. He saw one like a son of man coming from heaven. He received dominion, glory and kingship over nations and peoples of every time and place. Unlike the kings and rulers of this world, his kingship

will never be destroyed.

We hear in our Gospel from John 18:33-37, that when confronted by Pilate, Jesus did not deny his kingship. But he refused to be identified with any human race, class, or creed. Jesus admitted that he was an alien king. His kingdom was not of this world. He came to this world, not as a king but as a servant, to proclaim the truth of the Kingdom of Heaven.

Christ the King reigns incognito in this world. He does not live in grand houses. He does not have great wealth. He does not rule with great power. He rules through the cry of the poor for justice, the cry of the oppressed for freedom, the cry of the despised for acceptance, the cry of the weak for strength. He fights on the side of those who struggle for dignity and opportunity. As followers of Christ the King, we too must do the same.

Blessings, Fr. Ray

Patience makes sense Don’t be tempted to compare yourself to others. God’s plan for you is unique. “Be still before the Lord, and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over him who prospers in his way” (Psalm 37:7).

November 25: Christ the King (Our Lord Jesus Christ) “Jesus answered, ‘My kingdom does not belong to this world.” (John 18:36)

How often do we put all our time and energy into building a kingdom here on earth, forgetting that life here is short? The real kingdom is in the next life. Yet, how much time and energy do we invest in working for that eternal kingdom? In the 11/4 and 11/11 bulletins, we have listed the various “jobs” for those who give of their time and talent by serving on the STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE. We have been asked to give a more in depth description of what the Committee is, and what its mission is.

STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE MISSION “TO BE CHRIST FOR OTHERS AS CHRIST IS FOR US”

(OUR PARISH MISSION AS WELL). The organizational description of the Stewardship Committee serves as a tangible description of the roles for the committee members. With natural attrition, we have found that the committee is in need of additional stewards to help us continue to assist in the creation of a faith-filled, life-giving atmosphere in the parish. Please refer to the Nov.4 & 11 bulletins. Stewardship nurtures engagement, resulting in revitalized and growing ministries, and increases the ability of our parish to engage in outreach. Good stewardship naturally fosters evangelization as more and more parishioners embrace the mission of the parish — and reach out to share the good news. A culture of stewardship can truly transform our parish, positioning it to move confidently into the future.

PEOPLE OF LIFE

We need to find God, and he cannot be found in restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature - tress, flowers, grass grows in silence. See the stars, the moon and the sun , how they move in silence...we need silence to be able to touch souls. -Mother Theresa

While traveling through Europe these past two weeks, I visited many beautiful churches and cathedrals. One church I visited in Slovenia was in a small village of about 200 people. The church was built in the 3rd century and had beautiful fresco’s depicting scenes from the Old and New Testaments. Art was used in those days to help the people understand stories from the scriptures, since most people did not know how to read. Today, religious art helps us enter into the mystery of the divine through our devotional practices.

Icons, a word which comes from the Greek meaning “image,” are religious works of art, usually paintings, from Eastern Christianity depicting holy beings or objects such as Jesus, Mary, Saints, Angels or the Cross, and are used for the purpose of devotion.

Color plays an important role in the icon. Gold represents the radiance of heaven; red, the divine life. Blue is the color of human life, white is the Light of God, only used for icons of the resurrection and transfiguration of Christ. Letters are symbols too. Most icons incorporate some calligraphic text naming the person or event depicted. Even this is often presented in a stylized manner.

The parish has commissioned a Russian artist, Tamara Rigishvili, to paint a large icon of our parish patroness, St. Joan of Arc, and a large icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. The icon of St. Joan of Arc is com-pleted and a picture of it is displayed above. The cost of this icon is $1,800.00, donated by a generous family in the parish. The icon is in the process of being shipped from Russia. Tamara will begin her work on the icon of Our Lady of Perpetual help within the next few months. These beautiful icons will eventually hang on the wood paneled walls near the images of Mary and Joseph.

CHRIST, THE KING The selection from the book of Daniel presented in today’s first reading was part of an attempt to weave a vision of ultimate success for the Jews under persecution. Exactly whom the author had in mind when he refers to “one like a Son of Man” is hotly disputed by scholars today. The fact is, we simply do not know if the author meant anyone in particular or if this is a collective, figurative image of Israel’s triumph. What we do know is that the early Christian community seized upon this passage and recognized it as a messianic prophecy, a foretelling of the ultimate triumph of Jesus as the Christ of God. The Lectionary’s juxtaposition of this text with today’s Gospel narrative of Jesus before Pilate is a wonderful example of how the liturgy “layers” passages with new meaning by inserting them in a particular context. The celebration of Christ the King allows us to hear these passages with a new depth of meaning in light of our contemporary understanding of how, in Jesus and his resurrection and ascension, we have seen the fulfillment of Daniel’s vision of ultimate deliverance. The veiled admission of Jesus before Pilate that he did indeed have a kingdom “not here” takes on new meaning against the cosmic vision of Daniel, who allows us to glimpse the “Ancient One” on his heavenly throne.
