NEW PROCEDURE FOR ISSUING REPORTSNEW PROCEDURE FOR ISSUING REPORTSNEW PROCEDURE FOR ISSUING REPORTSNEW PROCEDURE FOR ISSUING REPORTS
The new procedure for issuing reports requests that students share their results with their parents. Hence, report envelopes are to always be opened with parents present. Report envelopes will be issued to all students with the following message on the front and on the seal:
This report envelope is sealed and to be opened only by a Parent or Guardian.
In response to families not receiving reports and students opening the envelopes to find a slip stating the message below:
Your son / daughter has not received their report a s there is an outstanding balance on the School account.
It is my belief that students should not be opening Report envelopes and reading that accounts have not been paid. This is not fair to our students. This is a matter for the school and parents. If your child has received the above message, the College office is open on Friday 20th December til 10.30am and reopens on Tuesday, 28th January 2014 to finalise accounts.
COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S REPORT CHRISTMAS SPIRIT Christmas should be a lovely occasion for everyone. The Christmas spirit has inspired millions of people over the centuries from King Wenceslas giving alms in the 10th century to the spontaneous truce between the Germans and allied soldiers across Flanders trenches during World War 1. We believe as Christians that the Christ child is the son of God and our saviour. He came into our world over 2000 years ago, lived amongst us and brought a message of love for all, even our enemies. He also brought a message of forgiveness, kindness, hope, goodwill and peace. As Christians we are called to witness and proclaim Jesus Christ to the world in such a way that he is accepted and received. Pope Francis reminds us that this requires a new approach and attitude. We do not effectively preach the Gospel like soldiers conquering the enemy. Rather, we engage with others in a spirit of humility, of openness and respect. In the words of the Australian poet Kenneth Crotty: “Jesus has to be born afresh in every age”. It is our responsibility as Christians to make the spirit of God alive in our homes and families this Christmas. We can do this in a variety of ways. While giving gifts is an important expression of our love for others, it can be an empty, meaningless ritual done without a renewed commitment to witness the great values which Jesus taught us. Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Firstly, I would like to congratulate all the award recipients for 2013. It was wonderful to see so many families in attendance at our end-of-year ceremonies. In this period of Advent we should give thanks for the gifts that God has bestowed on all of our community. In this spirit I would like to offer some reflections on the year that was 2013.
This year when we were encouraged to “Love Tenderly, Act Justly, Walk Humbly with our God” (Micha 6:8), our community experienced another enriching year in the Mission of Catholic Education in our region. In 2013 we welcomed new College Chaplain, Fr James Foster to the College. I would like to acknowledge Fr James’s valuable contribution to the liturgical and pastoral life of both staff and students. We look forward to working with Fr James next year in effecting the construction of the College Chapel and exploring the tremendous evangelical potential associated with the introduction of Youth Ministry classes next year. In addition, I would like to thank Fr Donnelly, Parish Priest and our St Agnes Parishioners for their ongoing financial support, stewardship and prayers for our College. For a Catholic College to be truly effective, it must live out Christ’s message each day by nurturing relationships. At St Joseph’s Regional College, this message is conveyed through the dedication and passion of its teaching and support staff. I have never been more impressed by such a dedicated and generous group of people. I would especially like to acknowledge the effective work done by the College’s Leaders of Learning and Pastoral Care, which combined with the support of our Leadership Team this year, has been outstanding. To Assistant Principal, Mrs Cath Eichmann , Leader of Evangelisation and Catechesis, Ms Nora Swain , Leader of Curriculum, Mr Ian Lutton , Leader of Administration, Mr Chris Kalchbauer and Leader of Pedagogy, Mr Chris Delaney , thank you for your tremendous service to the College this year. Additionally, I must give a special note of thanks to Coordinating Principal, Mr Jim O’Brien , Office Manager, Mrs Michelle Reynolds and Principal’s Assistant, Mrs Wendy Welsh for their loyalty and generous service shown to me in my first year as Principal of St Joseph’s Regional College. This year, St Joseph’s Regional College has been most ably led by our Captains, Andrew Newbound and Ashleigh Hales . They, along with College House Prefects have proven to be a formidable team of effective leaders. To our College SRC and Community Service Representatives, you too have done a great job in leading your respective year groups. Congratulations to all of these students. As Principal of St Joseph’s Regional College I am continually reminded and impressed by students who are readying themselves for life as “fully human adults” who have been endowed with the gift of freely seeking an understanding of truth in their future world. Our College Motto; “The Truth Will Set You Free,” resonates strongly in this regard. I am convinced and “hope-filled” by their capacity to see the face of Jesus in the faces of all people they meet each day, without prejudice toward others. Surely this lies at the heart of Jesus’ message of building God’s Kingdom on earth, in the here-and-now. This year, I have continually witnessed the generous spirit of St Joseph’s Regional College students and asked myself the question; why are these young people so ‘switched on’ to the needs of others compared to generations who have preceded them? It is my belief that a significant part of this is attributable to the relationship these young people and their families have established with the community of St Joseph’s Regional College. In 2014 St Joseph’s Regional College will have a Year 7 intake of 225, with a total student enrolment of 1050 students. Our student population is tracking to 1200 students by 2016. This growth will necessitate the completion of the College Hall, for which work will commence next year. In this very fruitful time in St Joseph’s Regional College’s history, we will continue to adapt, be courageous and explore new ways of becoming the “best possible Catholic College we can be” in delivering a quality holistic Catholic education to all students we welcome into our community.

NEWSLETTER DISTRIBUTION 2014 As our student intake increases at St Joseph’s Regional College, it has become evident that there is a need for the College to be more cost and environmentally efficient in the distribution of the newsletter. Therefore, from 2014 the College newsletter will be emailed to all families. We understand that for some families this is not always the most convenient way of receiving the newsletter, as such, hardcopies will be available for students to collect on Friday’s from the College canteen; it will also be available for viewing on the College website.
UNIFORM 2014 REMINDERS As many students have outgrown their uniforms in 2013, I thought it an apt time to remind parents and students that our uniform requirements are clearly outlined on our College website. To avoid issues when school resumes in 2014 please note the following reminders:
School Shoes - Many parents will need to purchase new school shoes for their sons and daughters in January 2014. Please remember that the school requires these to be plain black, polishable lace-up ALL leather shoes. (No high tops, boots or ripple soles, skate type shoes or logos. No buckle shoes or open top shoes. Heels should not be more than 2.5cm.) Sport shoes must be proper sports shoes. School shoes are not to be worn as part of the sports uniform.
Girls Dress- The girls blue dress is no longer part of the College uniform and therefore all girls are to wear the skirt and blouse from Day 1 2014. Skirts MUST be KNEE-LENGTH.
Sports Shorts- Joprim has organised a new sport short which includes the letters SAPPS on the bottom of them. We are unsure of when these will be available but would ask that shorts ONLY be purchased from Joprim.
Piercing and Hair Styles and Colour- Some students choose to have piercings and variation to hair colour and styles in the holidays. A reminder that these must comply with school rules when students return in 2014. God Bless
Jim Dempsey Principal
Lions Youth of the Year Quest
Congratulations to Tayla Furey (Year 10), Eleanor Wright (Year 10), Le ilani Gobius (Year 11) and Sam Turner (Year 11) for their impressive participation in the Lions Youth of the Year Quest, held in Port Macquarie last Wednesday evening. With the judging panel consisting of Mr Patrick Lee (former school principal), Mrs Irene Brown (Manager, Country Energy) and Mrs Alison Massey (Regional Manager, ANZ ), each contestant was required to present a five minute speech on a topic of their choosing and then respond to two impromptu questions.
Whilst all four contestants performed admirably, Eleanor received the Lions Public Speaking Award, whilst Sam was pronounced the Port Macquarie Lions Youth of the Year. Sam will now proceed to the Regional Final, to be held in Taree in February.
A special thank you must be extended to Mr Robert Bruce (Lions Youth of the Year director) for his enthusiastic and generous mentoring of these four exceptional young people. Ms Brigitte Rieger Leader of English
FROM THE LEADER OF CATECHESIS AND SCHOOL EVANGELISA TION Community Service As this week comes to a close, students will receive their reports and attend their awards ceremonies. At these house assemblies, many of our students will receive Community Service Awards. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of our students and their families for supporting our various charities throughout the year and being so generous with our recent Christmas Hamper appeal. Congratulations to all of our students receiving community service awards. It is very inspiring to see so many students who are so willing to give their time to assist others in the local community. Thank you Christmas Lights Pope Francis said, “Christmas lights reflect truth that Christ is the light of world.” The lights glowing on the Christmas tree in St Peter's Square, like Christmas lights everywhere, are reminders that Jesus is the light of the world, Pope Francis said. The Gospel story of Jesus' birth tells how the shepherds tending their flocks nearby were surrounded by a 'great light,' the Pope said. 'Today, too, Jesus continues to dispel the darkness of error and sin and brings humanity the joy of blazing divine light.' 'We should let ourselves be enveloped by the light of his truth so that the joy of the Gospel would fill the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus, he said. The tree, in every culture, is a symbol of life". A Christmas tree is a reminder that "the Lord comes to give us his life. Let us welcome him in our hearts and, in the glow of its light, let us bring him to the world." Nora Swain Leader of Catechesis and School Evangelisation
