    REMOVINGTHEBEAMS

In any failure, fault, or personal error, our ego instinctively tries to excuse itself. It is the tactic of pride — which is not willing to admit its mistakes and schemes — to hide them under more or less false pretexts, always finding some way to blame them on other people or on circumstances. Adam and Eve acted in this way after their sin; it is also the instinct of anyone who commits a fault. Herein lies great danger for the soul, because it is impossible for us to correct our faults if we are not willing to acknowledge them. It requires great courage to tear down these ingenious but inconsistent constructions of self-love, to expose our failings and look them squarely in the face, just as they are, without blaming them on anyone but ourselves. “When we commit a fault,” said Saint Therese of the Child Jesus, “we must not attribute it to a physical cause, such as illness or the weather, but we must attribute it to our own lack of perfection… Occasions do not make one weak, but they do show what he is.”

Excusing our faults may satisfy our pride, but in reality, it is voluntarily blinding oneself and making oneself incapable of seeing the true situation. Thus our poor soul is not only unable to advance, but is condemned to grope in the dark with no possibility of escape. On the other hand, if we sincerely recognize our faults, we have already taken the first step toward correcting them.

Father Gabriel of Saint Mary Magdalen, O.C.D. Fr. Gabriel of St. Mary Magdalen (+ 1952) was a Belgian Carmelite priest, teacher, and spiritual director.

    ASHWEDNESDAYMARCH6TH

    Mass Schedule 8:30 a.m. 12:00 noon 6:30 p.m.

FAST&ABSTINENCEAsh Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. — USCCB

    NEWMISSALSANDHYMNALS————————————————————————

As we continue to restore beauty to our liturgies, our old Celebremos / Let Us Celebrate missalettes, and We Celebrate hymnals, will be replaced with new pew resources.  Beginning Ash Wednesday, the Lumen Christi Hymnal will provide the most beautiful Catholic hymnody suitable for the Sacred Liturgy and the Liturgy of the Hours. The St. Isaac Jogues Illuminated Missal, Gradual and Lectionary (scheduled to arrive during the Easter season) will include the full 3-year cycle of readings (Years A,B,C), the propers for Sunday liturgies, responsorial psalms, and Mass settings, as well as devotional prayers. This will also prove more economical in the long term as our previous resources were provided on the basis of ongoing subscriptions. [Until our new missals arrive, the March issue of The Magnificat, placed in the pews, will provide the readings for Sunday Masses. Please do not remove these booklets.] The addition of our new, permanent missals and hymnals will further the mission of "bringing all that is beautiful and holy" to our worship of God.

SILENCEBEFOREMASS“Silence can foster reverence and reflection. Before Mass begins, a time of silence is commendable in the church, the sacristy, and in adjacent areas so that all may be disposed to carry out the sacred actions in a devout and fitting manner. Sacred silence, as a part of the celebration, is also to be observed at the designated times: for example, after each invitation to pray, at the conclusion of each reading, after the homily, and after Communion.
