Advent is the beginning of the church year, a time of re-newal on this journey of faith. These four weeks provide a spiritual reminder that God is with us in all places, all peoples, and all events. God is present even in writing cards, baking cookies, shopping for gifts, and the many customs that help us honor the day of Christ’s birth. Don’t fight the busyness; enter it. And in doing so, take

time, no matter what is on your mind or on your calendar, to see the presence of God in this day. This year, to help you with your journey through this Advent and Christmas season, on your way out of the church please pick up Daily Reflections for Advent and Christ-mas. This small book will help you to prepare spiritually during the especially busy Ad-vent and Christmas season. This book offers brief reflections that bring prayer and Scripture into every day life and thought-provoking and lasting way. This Advent, on Tuesday evenings starting at 7 p.m. in the church, there will priests vis-iting our church to give talks related to the seasons of Advent and Christmas. The first speaker is my friend Fr. Artur Sowa. Fr. Artur is the pastor of Saint Francis of Assisi in Orland Park. I wish you will find one hour this Tuesday, December 1st to come to the church for the 7 p.m. talk. One bright December morning in 1531 in what is now Mexico City, Juan Diego was on his way to daily Mass in honor of Our Lady when he encountered a vision of a woman dressed in regal robes who spoke his indigenous language, Nahuatl. Our Lady of Guada-lupe, as this vision of Mary is known, pledged to protect Diego, bringing forth roses in December as a sign of her love and fidelity. A healing presence, Guadalupe has become a symbol of the way Mary embraces all peoples, whomever and wherever they may be. May we always be so faithful and welcoming: Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas, pray for us! We will celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, on December 12th with 5 p.m. bilingual Mass followed by refreshments in our social hall. Finally, next weekend after all masses you are invited to the open house of the recto-ry. I'm happy that the renovation has been completed and I invite you to see the work that was done. I hope you will have a great advent season! Fr Karol

SICK OR HOMEBOUND

If you or anyone you know is sick or home-bound and would like to be anointed by Fr. Karol during the Advent Season in prepara-tion for Christmas, please call the parish office and we will make the arrangements for you.

We will celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Gua-dalupe with a bilingual Mass on Saturday, De-cember 12th at 5:00. A reception will follow in the Social Hall after Mass. All are welcome to attend.

WOMEN’S CLUB NEWS

Dona-tions of afghans, knitted or crocheted items or any new items are appreciated. Please drop off items in the Social Hall. The Women’s Club will attend 8:00 Mass in a group on Sunday, December 6th. All women are encouraged to attend. The Women’s Club Christmas Pot Luck meeting and dinner has be moved to December 14th. Please bring a dish to share and an inexpensive gift for the bingo game. All Women of the parish are welcome to attend.

LET’S LIGHT UP THE NIGHT

Friday, December 11th at 6 PM we will clean the inside of Church and decorate the outside of Church for Christmas. Goodies

and Christmas music will be provided—so a good time will be had by all who

are ready to help.

PRAY FOR GOOD WEATHER!!

Our Christmas Food Drive of non-perishable goods will take place for the next few weeks. We ask that you check the expirations dates on all cans and packages. You can place them on the tables in the Social. Some of you might prefer to offer cash donations instead of food items. Just place your donations in your pink parish envelopes that are for the Advent Food Collec-tion. The food will be distributed on Tuesday, December 22nd.

To help bring parishioners together in a spiritu-al activity and promote devotion to Mary, the Knights of Columbus Supreme council an-nounced a new church activity, the 5th Sunday Rosary Program. Knights, their families and all parishioners are encouraged to pray the rosary as a corporate body every time a 5th Sunday occurs during a month. Members of Our Mary Queen of Knights Coun-cil will lead us in the Rosary after 8 AM Mass this Sunday, November 29th in the church. All are invited to join us in this prayer.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Advent is a time rich in family traditions. Many of them have been so effectively absorbed into our culture that their religious origins are hidden. Some of us will set candles in our windows tonight. The custom began in Ireland during the so-called “penal” days, extending from 1691 to the “Catholic Emancipation” in 1829 and beyond. There were harsh penalties and fines for not attending the government church. Priests were forced in-to hiding, but people were resourceful and determined in guarding their faith. At Christmas, Irish families, par-ticularly in the countryside, placed a lighted candle in the cottage window and left the door unlatched, hoping that a priest might come by and celebrate the Christmas Mass for them. The possibility of the Mass coming into the family home gave rise to other Irish customs at the beginning of Advent. The cottage received a fresh coat of whitewash, the threshold was swept especially clean, and fresh cur-tains were hung in the windows. The house was scrubbed until it gleamed, including all the pots and pans, and all garments and table linens were laundered. The custom of the Irish window candle was so admired in Catholic Europe that it was widely copied there, and now finds a welcome in households that may not exactly expect a priest to wander in! —Rev. THE THREE COMINGS OF ADVENT

There are three distinct comings of the Lord of which I know, His comings to humankind, His coming into

humankind, and His coming against humankind. —St. Bernard: Third Sermon for Advent
