    Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It was an honor to host Coadjutor Archbishop Bernard Hebda and U.S. Senator Cory Booker at our 10:30am Mass last Sunday. Their hastily arranged visit was to acknowledge our large Filipino presence in particular and the many immediate plans for outreach to the Typhoon Haiyan victims which our parishioners have undertaken. Today’s second collection supports this cause.

Generations of faith-filled Catholic people have passed on to us the most precious gift that we possess—the gift of faith. As this generation’s “good stewards,” we are obligated to pass on the gift of faith to our children.

Children primarily learn through the example of their parents. Today, many parents are volunteering their time and talents to their churches and community groups and bringing their children along with them. More and more churches are encouraging children to return a portion of their “treasure” - their allowance or other earnings—with special children’s offering envelopes. As we know from our own experience, it takes a lifetime to develop the habits of good stewardship. (If there is enough interest in this, we will be happy to order some children’s envelopes. Please let us know at the rectory.)

God has blessed us in so many marvelous ways. Stewardship is a way of life built around gratitude to God, lived out by returning a portion of the time, talent, and treasure allotted to us. There is no more precious inheritance we can pass on to our children than this lifestyle of gratitude.

“If you will give these instructions…,you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished on the words of the faith and of the sound teaching you have followed.” (I Timothy 4:6)

Our Stewardship Appeal is being very well received by so many of you. To date 321 households have increased their weekly contribution in response to our stewardship of treasure program, representing a combined weekly increase of $2,952.00. Please use the special Stewardship envelope to indicate your new level of giving, and then return to your regular envelope packet for succeeding weeks. For more information on our Electronic Giving Program, go to our parish website (www.sjrc.org) and click on the “Parish Giving” icon.

Below, please find the last of the series of articles which the Archdiocesan Communications Office has provided to present the facts of all that the Archdiocese has done and continues to do to protect youth and children.

    Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor

The Catholic Church is Battling Sexual Abuse

While most media focus over the past ten or more years has been on the incidents of sexual abuse within the Church, little has been said about the many positive steps that the Catholic Church has taken to address the issue. Dioceses across the country, and especially the Archdiocese of Newark, have instituted compassionate outreach to victims and support services, training and background checks for staff and volunteers, training for children and youth, codes of conduct, reporting requirements to civil authorities, indepdendent Review Boards to investigate allegations and recommend actions under Canon Law for offenders, as well as other initiatives.

To date, the Catholic Church is the only youth-serving organization in the country—private or public—to undertake such a comprehensive program to create and promulgate safe environments for children and young people. Independent auditors from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops have found the Archdiocese of Newark to be fully compliant with the requirements of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People in every year since audits began in 2003.

    Reflection on Today’s Gospel

As we approach the end of the year, we are reminded that our own end will come one day. Let us have the confidence of that criminal we commonly refer to as the “good thief” and make his request to the Lord our own. And whenever that day comes, we can learn from Jesus how to face it: by extending forgiveness to any who have hurt us, by being compassionate up to our final moment, and by handing over our spirit in trust to our Father in heaven. The king will then surely come, gather us up in his arms, and take us with great joy into the Kingdom.

“Lord Jesus, remember us. Give us a share in the spirit of forgiveness you so generously expressed from the cross, the spirit of generosity that enabled you to turn from your own sufferings to comfort another, and the spirit of trust in your Father expressed in your last words.”

The Word of Life “No accidents, these lives of ours, created by a loving God with magnificent precision. The care and intricacy with which human life is created - or as Isaiah and the psalmist tell it, knitted together in our mothers’ wombs - are God’s loving work. These basic spiritual truths - these basic human truths - bring the tragedy of abortion into sharp relief. To snuff out any life desired, created, loved and given a purpose by God is an unspeakable tragedy.” - Archbishop J. Peter Sartain, Archbishop of Seattle, “We are to be people of life, people for life.” The Catholic Northwest Progress, January 24, 2013.
