Eucharistic Adoration & Exposition St. Mary’s by the Sea opens the Church for

Eucharistic Adoration every Monday through Friday from 1:00 to 4:30 pm. On Thursdays, the Divine Mercy Chaplet will be recited at 3 pm and we will have Eucharistic Exposition (where the Blessed Sacrament is displayed outside the tabernacle in the monstrance for adoration by the faithful) from 3:00 to 7:30 pm, closing with Benediction (praying the rosary and receiving a blessing with the Host) at 7:30 pm.

In addition, we always have 24-Hour Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament every First Friday of the month beginning after the 8am Mass and ending before the 8am Mass begins on Saturday.

Reflections of the Week Transfiguration Manifestation

It may seem odd to hear the Gospel of the Transfiguration of Jesus during Lent. Wouldn't it fit better after Easter? After all, the disciples who witnessed it did not tell anyone else about it until after the Resurrection (Matthew 17:9). An answer is found a few verses after our Gospel selection. Jesus tells the disciples that he will suffer (Matthew 17:12). The vision of Jesus' glory shared by Peter, James, and John was meant to help them not to become discouraged by Jesus' death on the cross.

The story encourages us during the long season of Lent to be faithful to our prayers, our Lenten sacrifices, and our charity because we have seen a glimpse of the glory that is coming. Some of the details in the Gospel can help us understand.

First, we hear about Jesus' appearance, that "his face shone like the sun" (Matthew 17:2). Just as we can't look directly at the sun, so people thought that if they looked at the face of God they would die. If the disciples didn't believe that Jesus was the Son of God before, they surely did now. For us this can be a reminder that God is with us during this season of Lent, helping our faith to grow.

Next, the three disciples see Moses and Elijah, who were signs that Jesus fulfills the law and the prophets. But when Peter tries to keep them around by offering to set up tents for them, the voice of God interrupts. God tells them that now they should listen to Jesus. The Gospel tells us to keep our eyes on Jesus throughout Lent. Do I grumble about Lent, seeing it is as another set of laws to be obeyed? Perhaps I'm forgetting that Lent is not about how much I do for God, but a time to reflect on what God has done for me.

The last line of the Gospel has Jesus admonishing the three not to tell anyone about their vision until after his resurrection. Maybe the disciples were tempted to brag that they were better than the other followers of Jesus. This reminds us that the sacrifices of Lent don't just make us look holy; they lead us to the new life of Easter. (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Catholic Apps for Your Phone Many of us have the intention to increase our prayers

and spiritual life this Lenten season. One way is to pray the prayers and readings on free Catholic apps. There are hundreds of Catholic apps available. Today, we will list a few that will help you grow in, live out, and share your faith, and they are all FREE!

iBREVIARY TS PLUS: This is one of the most handy apps to have on your phone. It has an electronic breviary, the book used to pray the Liturgy of the Hours. No need to carry a book everywhere. It also cues up the prayers for the day, and provides daily Mass readings, as well. A short saint biography is listed on the feast days along with many prayers and blessings. A big plus is that it works on every device and has a web interface that can be accessed from anything with a browser.

DIVINE MERCY offers the complete Divine mercy message and devotion in an easy to navigate format including Stations of the Cross with images and the text of St. Faustina’s Way of the Cross, and an interactive Chaplet of Divine Mercy with an audio option.

THE POPE APP is all about the Pope. You can watch video clips of the Pope’s addresses, read transcripts of his speeches with links to other sources, and even watch live streaming videos. You can also look at the Vatican live from the web cam.

Next week, we will feature more apps to help you during your Lenten season.
