THE NATIVITY OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST JUNE 24, 2018

3

If you haven’t registered yet, you may still enroll on June 25th from 10:00 a.m. to

6:00 p.m.

Dear Parishioners of St. John the Baptist,

Did you know that June 21-the first day of summer-is National eGiving Day? St. John the Baptist can take

particular joy in this celebration, as the response to eGiving in our church has been wonderful.

To build on this success, I am challenging you to put envelopes on a permanent summer vacation and set up an

eGiving account with Faith Direct today. eGiving is especially important in the summer months, when many families

may be out of town some weekends and St. John the Baptist does not receive their envelopes. It’s easy for people to

forget to catch up once they’re back, and our weekly offertory can fluctuate as a result—making it harder to predict how

much we will have to sustain our year-round ministries.

The more families who welcome the beginning of summer by taking this National eGiving Day Challenge, the

more consistency and predictable our offertory will be month after month—and this will help us do even more to spread

Christ’s love throughout the community. Being part of this challenge is simple. Visit www.faithdirect.net and use our

church code: CO509. Thank you for your continued support of our parish family with your time and talents as well as

treasure!

God Bless You,

Fr. Humberto

Altar Flower Purchase Opportunity

We are offering a new opportunity for

parishioners to purchase the flowers that are placed on the altar each Sunday and on major feast days. These arrangements may be purchased in memory or in honor of loved ones whose names will

be published in our bulletin weekly.

The minimum donation is $100 per Sunday or feast day for up to 2 names. Or the donation may be divided between a maximum of two families, each offering one name. If you are interested, please see our parish receptionist. The dates are available on a first come, first served basis. The arrangements will be liturgically determined and handled by the

Church personnel.

CHURCH OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST LONGMONT, COLORADO

Gospel Meditation Tiny fingers and toes. A little yawn. A loud cry.

An infant wrapped in swaddling clothes. “What will this

child be?” It is a question every parent asks time and time

again. As first steps are taken, as personalities emerge, as a

child shows interest in reading or drawing or climbing, the

question is on our lips. “What will this child be?” This

question is asked as John the Baptist is born. Will he be a

priest like his father? Does his strange, unexpected name

signal a departure from that inheritance? Could Elizabeth

and Zechariah ever have predicted what would be Under the

tutelage of his priestly father, John “became strong in

spirit.” As an adult, John would retreat into the desert to

preach repentance. He would attract a large following and

eventually attract the attention of the rulers of the day. He

would point out the adulterous ways of King Herod and

would find himself in prison. Eventually, he would be

beheaded. But today, he is a child, an infant newly born.

On this special feast, we're reminded of the great

humility required of parents. The character formation, the

discipline and encouragement, the violin lessons and soccer

practices every parental effort is subjected to the decisions

of the child themself. Even children on a sure track by high

school graduation transform under life's circumstances.

Entrusting our children to God can be incredibly

intimidating. “What will this child be,” especially when

that transformation lies outside of my control? John the

Baptist's story might not have ended as his parents

imagined. But he is celebrated as the greatest of the

prophets, as the one who prepared the way for the Messiah.

Here is the hope of all Christian parents -- that our children

would be raised in such a way that when people meet them,

they meet Jesus Christ.

Vivir La Liturgia

Live the Liturgy

As we celebrate today’s feast, we are reminded that God

creates and fashions each one of us with intent and

purpose. We are not random accidents. We are special

creations and wonderfully made. Each of us brings a

unique twist to the one shot at life that we are given. As

people of faith and children of God, we are asked to use

our specialness to announce God’s kingdom. Each of us

reveals a unique part of God’s face. Each day presents

opportunities to communicate our faith to others and to

reveal God’s mercy. We have the means to point the way

to Christ. How can we show Jesus to others today?

In Our Gift Shop..Your Local Catholic Book Store

“The Catholic Church saved my marriage and, quite possibly, my life.”

So begins David Anders in this remarkably forthright book. In it, David reports that by the early 2000s, his marriage was so painful that he and his wife had just one thing in common: contempt

for each other.

Today, he and his wife are extremely happy together not because of marriage therapy, but

because they came to know and fully embraced the Catholic Church s teachings on marriage.”

The Gift Shop will be closed June 29th through July 6th for our annual inventory and the July

4th holiday.

Bulletin Submissions

There is a new editor in town! My name is Abby Cowley,

I will be taking over the bulletin for the summer. I went to

St. John’s from kindergarten to 8th grade and am so

excited to be able to have the opportunity to help and give

back to a school that has had such a huge impact on my

life. St. John’s gave me many opportunities that helped

me get ahead in schooling and during my time there I met

friends that I will have for a life time.

Because I will be taking the Bulletin over, please submit

all future bulletin requests

to [email protected].

Thank you!

Where There’s A Will

Creating a Will is an important way to record and remem-ber what matters most to you, including our parish and faith family.

The Catholic Foundation of Northern Colorado is here to help you understand the advantages of creating a Will— and how you can give it a way to do greater good through a bequest to the Foundation for the benefit of St. John the

Baptist Parish Fund—Longmont.

What better way to leave your legacy than in the love of Jesus Christ? For a free consultation, please call Jean Finegan at The Foundation at 303-867-0613.
